Biden: Hey, you know who might have been a better pick for VP than me?

Say it with me. Eagleton.
And so, with this, the number of Americans who don’t think Hillary would have been a smarter pick stands at one. Serious question: If Palin aces the Charlie Gibson interview and McCain bounces out to, say, an eight-point lead, does Obama decide that Biden needs to spend more time with his family, swap in Her Majesty, and launch the gender politics clusterfark to end all clusterfarks? It’d have to be done before the VP debate on October 2; they wouldn’t want to miss the chance to draw the contrast with Palin and cement the substitution in the public’s mind by not having her in place already for an event as high profile as that. Even more serious question: If Obama’s imploding, why would Hillary agree to come aboard? Better to let McCain finish him off and then skip to the nomination in 2012. Still more serious question: If McCain had chosen Palin before Obama picked his own VP, is there any doubt who the choice would have been? And the most serious question of all: What is this tool doing telling audiences Obama should have gone with Hillary? Is there any conceivable strategy behind that? A feeble ploy for the PUMAs, maybe, or just Biden being Biden?
Update: Biden said repeatedly during the primaries that Obama wasn’t qualified to be president. Turns out he was right:
Barack Obama’s judgment was that Joe Biden was the best possible vice presidential candidate.
Joe Biden says he’s wrong.
This was Obama’s first major decision as a would-be president.
He got it wrong.
Update: “I don’t think Palin would be seeing these kind of gains if Hillary was on the ticket… When Obama picked Biden, it gave Republicans an opening, and they are taking full advantage of it… The question is: How long will it last?”

That would make Obama the candidate that had to be saved by Hillary, that’s assuming she could even help at this point. I don’t think it will happen, but not for the reason above but because I don’t think Obama can stand Hillary. I think Obama would rather lose than spend four years in the White House with Hillary. I know I would.

He CAN’T do it! Shows desperation and poor judgement, which was the very thing he was supposed to have in spades (racist comment). Then again he actually picked Biden in the first place. To quote Rush “oh please oh please!!!!!”
Then again, we better be careful what we wish for as it might just come true. If Biden stays, Palin will make short work of him. Less than 8 weeks but it is still an eternity! Oh the humanity!

Mr_Magoo on September 10, 2008 at 5:55 PM
That is so true. At some point in Obama’s political career, some one told him to never, ever admit to being wrong…never even say it. I think he took it to heart. How else can you explain his waffling on the Iraq surge?? If that isn’t an example of being completly wrong, I don’t know what is. And yet he can just prattle ‘It worked better than anyone thought’ crap and not even blink.

If BHO did throw Joey under the bus, and try to pick another VP doen’t you think that people would realize that this man has absolutly no judgement?

This is going to be interesting.
I think Barack would have to publicly so that even though Hillary is technically the vice presidential candidate, he intends to govern with Hillary as an equal. The Co-Presidency. Even at that, I think Hillary would not want to do it, especially if she is uncertain that she and Barack would win.
Of course, at this point, putting Hillary back on the ticket would be an obvious pander.
JudetheFossil on September 10, 2008 at 5:58 PM
Yeah…offers you the second seat when it’s all beer and skittles, Joe, and you jump on it. Now, your potential boss appears to be stumbling, and it’s to the lifeboats, every man for himself?
Just an off-hand remark, surely. It’s all useless speculation…but it is fun….
Joe — who’s been strangely off camera ever since Denver — knows that he’s stuck with the Shyster from ChiTown around his neck….
Hillary wouldn’t touch this turkey with a ten-foot brickbat. Imagine her showing up to elbow Little Barry off the stage, the “savior of the party”, all raised eyebrows and pants-suits and sincerity faked to a “T”. That’d be a real contrast: the most ersatz woman in the world vs. a rather genuine woman who is as unlikely to knuckle under as anyone in the entire Clinton family.
Bring it on, DNC.

I’ve been trying to find out, and it looks like its up to STATES as to how late Bambi could change his VP pick… how late they will lock their ballot… I know that its happened in tha past where it was too late to change out Senator and such…
Its also really weird as to HOW they would do it… even if Biden bowed out, who gets to make the decision seeing as how the DNC were the ones, at the convention, who nominated Biden.
So, if Biden is on the Ballot, but not running, could Hillary even get the VP slot? or would that make PELOSI the VP?

Not true. Obama is cravenly egotistical enough to be the first presidential candidate in history to tell the nation his judgment is so pathetic that he needs to switch his VP out and pick another, after the Democratic National Convention that voted to approve it, and call that Hope, Change, Yes, We Can, or whatever.

lorien1973 on September 10, 2008 at 6:05 PM
There is a lesson in all of this I hope McCain learns. Obama ignored his base when he passed on Hillary and things are going badly for the Obama camp.
On the other hand, McCain listened to his base and things are going well for him. I hope McCain remembers that things go better when you listened to your base.

I noticed that but I can’t figure out why. the public polls still show a realitive tight race, there are 4 debates left to go. 8 weeks is a long time. BHO should not be in panic mode yet. Maybe it is money drying up or maybe internal polls show something the MSM is not telling us. I don’t know but I see no reason for BHO to panic yet. He took a knock he only needs to get back up and continue the fight yet he isn’t he is running and hiding and lashing out like a 5 yr old. It makes no sense.

You’re mixing party rules & procedures with the Constitution’s rules of succession in office. McGovern dumped Eagleton in 1972 after less than two weeks, with no real noise from the Dems
Up to a certain point, political parties are private organizations which can change their rules at will. Their problem here, as others have noted, is state laws and practices. With less than two months to go……
Janos Hunyadi on September 10, 2008 at 6:09 PM
Internal polls I think look very bad for Obama. The youth vote is collapsing and the women are going to McCain. As are indepedents. I haven’t seen a good Obama poll since the R convention.

Fletch54 on September 10, 2008 at 6:11 PM
Compared to Obama? That’s pretty much all he’s ever done.
What Bill Clinton was best at was using the liberal media. They may love Obama in the romantic sense, but they would LOVE to have Bill play them like a fiddle once again.
Obama is as clumsy as Hell. The lipstick on a pig line was a major screwup; it completely derailed his “I’m a good little boy; I keep telling those media types to quit being so gosh-darned mean, but they won’t listen to me!” strategy. Bill would never have screwed up like that. (At least not in his prime anyway. Since the stroke, he’s not the same.)
logis on September 10, 2008 at 6:11 PM
Biden has my sympathy now. There is no way he is less qualified than Clinton, but she has the name recognition and the correct genitals. He like everyone else sees what is going on. It is not him who should be dropped from the ballot.
Clinton would not accept the VP nomination because she knows Obama would lose McGovern style because Obama would be seen as unfit to lead the country.

You might be right. All I know is the reaction from the Obama camp is WAY over done based on public information. So something is either not being said or BHO is an idiot. I can see both being true. So just not sure what to say. If he is just an idiot then that would be a reason to not vote for him. If the polls are that bad then that will drive more people away. So it looks like he is in a no win sit at the moment. Best thing he could do right now is go quiet and go do some fundraising. Cite 9/11 and not campiagn for a couple of days and regroup.

No matter what, dem strategy is dem strategy. Hillary or not, they would have used the same (and maybe worse) tactics, and the outcome would be the same. Maybe even worse for the dems…the contrast between Hillary and Sarah may have been even more devastating to the dems.
Bill would have stuck his nose in the mess and Palin would have shot back with “if he was my husband, he would be nothing more then moose stew when I got through with him”…
right2bright on September 10, 2008 at 6:19 PM
You know what Obama needed before taking 9/11 off from campaigning?
Swinegate and Biden sticking his foot in it. 2 days of that. Sound like fun for Obama?
I didn’t think so.
lorien1973 on September 10, 2008 at 6:20 PM
Sorry if I wasn’t clear, it was two seperate points, on two seperate things…
One point is that Obama does NOT get to pick his VP in a vacuum. Even if they go along with his selection, I’m sure there are rules in place that must be followed to make Hill the new Democrat VP Nominee… I’ve been trying to find the DNC rules but I can’t seem to find them online… interestingly enough.
Key is that this would take time… even if Biden would bow out…
Then you would have to do all the state stuff to get her name on the ballot…
So, IF things get hosed up, we could potentialy have a situation where there WAS no real Democrat VP pick if this happens too late…
Romeo13 on September 10, 2008 at 6:20 PM

Just the thought of all the screeching and whining is the stuff of nightmares. lol
Cody1991 on September 10, 2008 at 6:21 PM
He won’t dump Biden, but they could manufacture a reason for Biden to resign: health, family crisis, or he goes into a coma for a few days. The situation is desperate no matter what and Republicans just need to take this time to hold to their guns and religion and watch the dems take another hit, hopefully in congress too.
Iceman on September 10, 2008 at 6:23 PM
Speaking of which….
Since Obama is now in full-meltdown-mode, McCain/Palin need to start working on the down-ticket elections–especially the Senate. Any Dems up for re-election need to be targeted (politically, of course), even if they are “long-shots.” Of course, any damage that can be done to the House would be great, as well.
It needs to be a real team effort. McCain is certainly loathe to be a team member, but since he is now the team-lead, he needs to bear a little responsibility.

Here’s a thought: most of us have been approaching this from the position that Obama would be trying to get rid of Biden — but what if this is less prepping for a new VP (for the sake of Obama) and more Biden positioning himself to abandon the sinking ship of the Obama campaign (for the sake of Biden)?
Biden’s also still running for his Senate seat; he may be starting to think that a continued, comfortable tenure in the House of Lords is preferable to being linked to a POTUS candidate that’s rapidly becoming a trainwreck.

I’m not so sure, the VP pick was Obama’s most important decision as a candidate, and if that pick is openly questioning his judgement, he’s gotta go…but then it destroys Obama’s only real issue: “judgement to lead”. This is a gaffe of epic proportions! It has to be covered!!!

If the internal polls start showing that congressional seats may be up for grabs, Pelosi and Reid step in.
They care more about their jobs then Baracks. They will sacrifice the Pres. position to hold onto control of congress.
In the next two weeks (and probable Monday after the Gibson interview), if the polls are even more weak for the Dems. The sacrifice begins…
The other major concern is the drilling for oil. If the dems pull some “fast ones”, and the Republicans can explain and call them out on it, the dems will be so busy back-tracking that Obama will not be that important.
