Biden: Hey, you know who might have been a better pick for VP than me?

posted at 5:33 pm on September 10, 2008 by Allahpundit

Say it with me. Eagleton.

And so, with this, the number of Americans who don’t think Hillary would have been a smarter pick stands at one. Serious question: If Palin aces the Charlie Gibson interview and McCain bounces out to, say, an eight-point lead, does Obama decide that Biden needs to spend more time with his family, swap in Her Majesty, and launch the gender politics clusterfark to end all clusterfarks? It’d have to be done before the VP debate on October 2; they wouldn’t want to miss the chance to draw the contrast with Palin and cement the substitution in the public’s mind by not having her in place already for an event as high profile as that. Even more serious question: If Obama’s imploding, why would Hillary agree to come aboard? Better to let McCain finish him off and then skip to the nomination in 2012. Still more serious question: If McCain had chosen Palin before Obama picked his own VP, is there any doubt who the choice would have been? And the most serious question of all: What is this tool doing telling audiences Obama should have gone with Hillary? Is there any conceivable strategy behind that? A feeble ploy for the PUMAs, maybe, or just Biden being Biden?

Update: Biden said repeatedly during the primaries that Obama wasn’t qualified to be president. Turns out he was right:

Barack Obama’s judgment was that Joe Biden was the best possible vice presidential candidate.

Joe Biden says he’s wrong.

This was Obama’s first major decision as a would-be president.

He got it wrong.

Update: “I don’t think Palin would be seeing these kind of gains if Hillary was on the ticket… When Obama picked Biden, it gave Republicans an opening, and they are taking full advantage of it… The question is: How long will it last?”

That is an excellent question.

PUMAS want Hillary on the top of the ticket. Why would Hillary be so stupid as to join Obama? Let him grovel and show the lib party what it is like to be in your pantsuit.

JP1986UM on September 10, 2008 at 5:38 PM

McGovern’s handling of the controversy was an opening for the Republican campaign to raise serious questions about his judgment. In the general election, the Democratic ticket won only Massachusetts and the District of Columbia.

Recreate ‘72!

lorien1973 on September 10, 2008 at 5:38 PM

Why would she join? She wants the top spot anyway – the best way to get that is to have Obama lose the “can’t lose” election for the Democrats and to try again in 4 years.

I suspect “Scranton” doesn’t really want to win. He just told America, “Barry and whomever are nuts for picking me”. He *may* have been trying to compare and contrast her majesty and the Arctic Fox but what he did was highlight Barry’s ego. Hillary! also has as little, and arguably less FP xp than Sarah.

sven10077 on September 10, 2008 at 5:39 PM

Here it comes…

Change hits the Dems’ VP pick.

But what does it show?

1. Inability for Obama to commit
2. Inability to make a concrete decision
3. Inability to make a qualified judgment
4. Inability for Obama to be loyal
5. Obama’s inability.

‘Nuff said.

madmonkphotog on September 10, 2008 at 5:39 PM

What happens if Obama offers it to her? She seems extremely cold to him right now. Do you think she would bail Obama out?

And if she did get on the ticket, how much would it change the dynamic?

And if Obama’s camp thought that they could get her on the ticket, why would they still be freaking out?

I’m not reading much into this. Biden is stupid and has a huge ego. When he said Hillary is more qualified then he is, he just wanted somone to scream “WHAT ARE YOU TALKING AOBUT JOE??? THAT’S JUST CRAZY”

BuckNutty on September 10, 2008 at 5:41 PM

This seems to be Biden pandering to Hill supporters more than anything, plus a little of his normal stupidity mixed in.

That said, I’d say Eagleton is unlikely. I don’t think Hillary ever wanted to be VP, she just wanted the courtesy of being vetted.

Why would she want to be VP when she can be Prez four years from now?

eski502 on September 10, 2008 at 5:43 PM

Now hold on here just a sec….Didn’t the Democrats come up with their Super Delegate plan to avoid another McGovern embarrassment? Well, that’s working out real well so far.

Do they now need to come up with a Super Uber Delegate system to pick their VP? I mean, they can’t let the lowly peons in their party decide on who their candidate will be…and now they apparently can’t let the candidate, chosen under threat of being SuperOverturned by Super Smart Party Honchos, choose his/her own running mate???

Well Done DemoTards!!!

lorien1973 on September 10, 2008 at 5:45 PM

I already posted last week and today. Last week, if McCain/Palin continue to garner large points in the polls, Obama will have to choose someone else.
This morning I stated, if Palin hits a home run with Gibson, they (Obama) has less then two weeks to make a change from Biden.
The press will not blame Obama, they have to find blame somewhere else, and it will be Biden.
But it won’t help…it will show Obama as not being clear headed, a good decision maker…and I doubt Hillary would take the slot. She is now (in her mind) set for 2012.
Right now, Pelosi and Reid are more worried about their jobs then the Presidential race. That may be lost, but now it looks like congressional seats are up for grabs.
If this trend continues, dems lose everything…everything…breaks my heart.

Wow, that is a truly bizarre clip. What was the context?

Still more serious question: If McCain had chosen Palin before Obama picked his own VP, is there any doubt who the choice would have been?

I’ll bite on this one. I think Obama would have picked a woman, but I don’t think it would have been Hillary. Watching Michelle O! during the convention, she radiated hatred for Hillary.

I think he probably would’ve picked someone like Sebelius, or if he was really intent on showing national politics credentials, why not a congresswoman? One thing that has puzzled me in all of this is why Pelosi or Feinstein have never been fielded as VP contenders. Is there some animosity there?

Y-not on September 10, 2008 at 5:45 PM

Joe “Dumb a Rock” Biden is talking himself out of a job.

Old Hippie Vet on September 10, 2008 at 5:46 PM

Hillary might just take the VP position. They will lose, but she will be able to make the point that it wasn’t her fault, it was Obama’s. And though she tried (right) to bring them from behind in the bottom of the 9th, even she will Bill at her side could not make up for the damage done by Obama.

That leaves her in prime position for 2012. No muss, no fuss.

Even more serious question: If Obama’s imploding, why would Hillary agree to come aboard? Better to let McCain finish him off and then skip to the nomination in 2012.

That’s exactly right. Hillary’s not stupid. If she’s asked to join the ticket, the smart move is to let Obama fail and run in 2012 with the campaign slogan, “See, I Told You So.” (with apologies to Rush)

Jim-Rose on September 10, 2008 at 5:47 PM

Conservative_SAHM on September 10, 2008 at 5:48 PM

Eagleton option is extremely unlikely. The last guy to do that lost 49 states.

If Biden leaves, when would he leave? Before the debates? No way, the self-proclaimed “super genius” ain’t gonna be pushed out before the debates. It’ll look like he’s running from the dumb broad from Alaska. His ego won’t allow that.

After the debates? Good luck with that. If he wins the debate, he won’t leave. If it’s lose or draw, it’ll reflect real bad on Obama if he leaves after that. Besides after there’s only a few weeks left after the VP debate. It’ll cause all sorts of problems for the BO campaign.

So Obama and Biden are joined at the hip for the next 2 months. The only way Joe leaves is in a pine box.

My inner Spock says this is not logical, for the reasons MadMonk enumerates above. Changing this kind of horse mid-stream makes Obama look like an absolute idiot.
