Video: House GOP hit Democrats on energy

posted at 1:00 pm on September 9, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

If the election has buried the story of the House Oil Party lately, especially with the emergence of Sarah Palin, then the GOP wants to remind people about Democratic obstructionism. This new video from their site reminds voters that Republican Representatives stayed in Washington, trying to cajole Nancy Pelosi to come back and get something done on energy — namely, a commitment to increase American domestic production of oil:

Republicans have to keep this issue front and center in this election. While the Senate Gang of 16 has reportedly expanded to 22, according to a speech given by Harry Reid yesterday, the House GOP caucus has held firm on real commitments to open the OCS and interior West shale formations for new drilling. This matches with the overwhelming will of the electorate, and Democratic fortunes have already begun to decline with their refusal to address the supply crisis in energy pricing.

I wonder how many tourists got a front-row seat to the House Oil Party this summer. Those that did will certainly talk about it in their home districts, and they will tell which party wanted a vacation, and which wanted to get something done in one of the most useless sessions of Congress in American history.

I’m sure the Democrats will try to change the subject by showing a McCain-Palin split on ANWR, though Maverick can solve that problem by saying that, after consulting with the governor of Alaska, he’s decided there should be oil drilling in that area on a limited basis. Any outrage by Obama, Biden or their supporters would just rebound to the fact that the Democratic leadership doesn’t want any new drilling anywhere, which is a far more dangerous position to be in right now.

Republicans have to keep this issue front and center in this election.

It would help if team McCain bubbled this up to the campaign.

Kini on September 9, 2008 at 1:06 PM

The Democrats have asked for a public flogging on this issue; give it to them.

backwoods conservative on September 9, 2008 at 1:10 PM

Hammer them on the lack of tax breaks to aid capitalization of new resource exploitation er uh “recovery”…..

we need an energy package that works, and it is better to give tax breaks than subsidies…tac breaks encourage more effort…subsidies minimize it….look at ethanol.

sven10077 on September 9, 2008 at 1:11 PM

The Democrats are going to try to compromise on some wishy-washy drilling proposal to make it a non-issue on election day. The Republicans need to stand firm and ensure that any compromise includes drilling on all of our offshore reserves, not just a small chunk of them.

BadgerHawk on September 9, 2008 at 1:11 PM

They deserve some credit for this, and some contributions. They now need to kill tha gang of 10, er 16, er 22.

The high gas prices might turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

The democrats’ no-drill policy is undefendable and irrational like so many others of their positions.

But this time it is obvious to everyone, not only those who care for politics. And the fact that it concerns everybody’s wallets makes everyone pay attention.

Oh wait, these wouldn’t be government jobs so they wouldn’t count.

But what do you think when you have Sarah whispering in McCain’s ear telling him about the “proposal” in which the Dems are trying to do.

I don’t see it flying!

CUT – KILL – DIG & DRILL

America can use our vast resources that Democrats have made out of reach for more jobs, more wealth, better security and more.

All we need is for voters to replace as many Democrats as possible in the House and Senate.

This theme is brought to you by environmentalists in Alaska, who call Sarah Palin the “Killa from Wasilla.”

Debate talking point to hammer both DFL goofs straight into the ground.

Bishop on September 9, 2008 at 1:26 PM

The market leader in central Ohio raised prices at every local filling station from as low as $3.43 per gallon yesterday to $3.79 across the board. While one local radio host expressed his own personal disgust that $3.50 seemed low, with this increase, I would think this battleground state would be receptive to serious approaches to lowering costs.

Drilling now is the best symbol that Congress is serious about solving it. As McCain/Palin have made clear, everything must be on the table going forward. So I’m glad to see the House GOPers making this kind of statement now.

EconomicNeocon on September 9, 2008 at 1:26 PM

I say we drag that ugly witch out of the house, and publicly excuse her from office, then move on to representative that took a vacation and excuse them from office under the grounds of refusing to work.

After we get done, we ban those people from holding public office, and deport them for crimes against the American people.

After this we can hold special elections.

See all these liberals want to impeach Bush so bad for what they THINK may be illegal. It is illegal for congress to accept a paycheck when they have failed to represent the American people.

Given that Palin has been requested to make appearances in almost every contested congressional district, this issue should be easy to make front and center.
But Johnny Mac better tell his friend Sen Grahmnesty to get with the program and stop with his damn gangs.

Just stand firm and we win. Bush should state NOW that anything with a blanket extension of the ban will be veto’d, no matter what it is.

Here is what I cannot figure out: How can this be a Republican issue if when the Republicans controlled the House, the Senate, and the WH, they did nothing? Why only now, during an election, are they making a fuss about the drilling? Don’t get me wrong, I want drilling here, there, everywhere, but I don’t see why anyone would trust the Republicans on this issue.

what the GOP and we are saying is it is time for America to rexert influence on the world oil market through domestic production.,..

We owe the House Republicans a debt of gratitude for keeping the energy issue alive this summer. I’m sure it helped influence McCain’s VP choice. Hallelujah!

The Senate Republicans who’ve joined the gang of whatever provide a perfect illustration of why McCain should not/could not/did not choose a senator as his running mate.

Let’s not fall into that trap so easily. Anytime the Republican Congress attempted anything that annoyed the Democratic base [i.e., "Soros"], the Dems pulled out the fillabuster in the Senate and shut it down. That tactic came out time and again. To get anything done, Republican leadership moved on to less controversial bills.

Well then, can you explain how in the world they can get it done now without a majority in the House or Senate? I realize that the price at the pump right now is painfully high, but at the time, the price of gas was also, what seemed painfully high. You cannot tell me that there weren’t many people in both House and Senate and within the entire Republican constituency who did not know that oil supplies vs. demands were going to be an issue in the near future. It wasn’t done then because it did not suit their collective political fortunes and if you don’t think that they will sell you right down the river again when it suits their collective political fortunes, then you don’t know politicians very well.

See what a lying, deceptive press can cause.
The republicans didn’t have the balls to call them on it.If it had been me in charge, I would have called there bluff. It would have only taken 2 or 3 times and then the would see that standing up for long hrs straight sucked and would have tried something else.
