Quote of the day

“Conservative though she may be, I felt that Palin represented an explosion of a brand new style of muscular American feminism. At her startling debut on that day, she was combining male and female qualities in ways that I have never seen before. And she was somehow able to seem simultaneously reassuringly traditional and gung-ho futurist. In terms of redefining the persona for female authority and leadership, Palin has made the biggest step forward in feminism since Madonna channeled the dominatrix persona of high-glam Marlene Dietrich and rammed pro-sex, pro-beauty feminism down the throats of the prissy, victim-mongering, philistine feminist establishment…
Over the Labor Day weekend, with most of the big enchiladas of the major media on vacation, the vacuum was filled with a hallucinatory hurricane in the leftist blogosphere, which unleashed a grotesquely lurid series of allegations, fantasies, half-truths and outright lies about Palin. What a tacky low in American politics — which has already caused a backlash that could damage Obama’s campaign. When liberals come off as childish, raving loonies, the right wing gains. I am still waiting for substantive evidence that Sarah Palin is a dangerous extremist. I am perfectly willing to be convinced, but right now, she seems to be merely an optimistic pragmatist like Ronald Reagan, someone who pays lip service to religious piety without being in the least wedded to it. I don’t see her arrival as portending the end of civil liberties or life as we know it…
The witch-trial hysteria of the past two incendiary weeks unfortunately reveals a disturbing trend in the Democratic Party, which has worsened over the past decade. Democrats are quick to attack the religiosity of Republicans, but Democratic ideology itself seems to have become a secular substitute religion. Since when did Democrats become so judgmental and intolerant? Conservatives are demonized, with the universe polarized into a Manichaean battle of us versus them, good versus evil. Democrats are clinging to pat group opinions as if they were inflexible moral absolutes. The party is in peril if it cannot observe and listen and adapt to changing social circumstances.”

I feel the same way.

I dunno. Among Palin’s leftist defenders, I think Gravel was a little better.

Everyone in America should read this article.
The Fallacy of ‘Green Jobs’
Damiano on September 10, 2008 at 12:40 AM
Although I might not agree with everything she writes, Paglia does seem to reach a logical, intelligent conclusion, for her point of view, in her essays. Always get the feeling that, with her, there is at least respect for other viewpoints, and a willingness to have an open mind towards other points of view.

You sound just like the hate-the-other-side left. Two sides of the same coin.

When Obama took MoveOn’s $$ during the Dem. primaries from Hillary (that funded Rezco’s “astro turfing” ). That party was sold to the highest bidder, and his name is Soros….

They won’t listen to the great Camille Paglia. Love to read her writings.

He disrespected her so badly…. If his mother were alive today she would have washed his potty mouth out with soap….it was beneath contempt …even for a politician ….not the lipstick remark….the fish remark…….That was disgusting and completely indefensible.

I think another civil war is on the horizon. The looney left vs everyone else. The war will has already been started in the courts, and it’s begun to spill out into the streets (MN). It’s just a matter of time before the spark ingnited into a brushfire.
E L Frederick (Sniper One) on September 10, 2008 at 1:11 AM
Rush greatly admires Camille Paglia and has referred to her as a friend – now I can see why. I don’t agree with her ideology, but she is not deranged.
HawaiiLwyr on September 10, 2008 at 1:18 AM
Exactly. It was really interesting to read her views on the subject. Even with how wordy it was it kept my total attention throughout the article.

Now I lay my down to sleep
I pray the Lord, my country to keep
Guide it safely through this name calling blight
And get the two sides of the same coin out of America’s sight

I completely agree. Along with the unabashed allegations of racism toward the McCain campaign (most recently MY Gov. David Paterson)and several articles from around the country that threaten race riots if Obama loses, we are in for an inevitably ugly all out race and party war. The events of this past 11 days related to Palin (especially CNN using unedited Daily Kos and HuffPo material as reliable news stories without even the slightest attempt at fact checking and the all out campaign by CNN to trash every aspect of Palin) underscore how terribly wrong things have gotten.
I am surprised that no one is talking about here. Tomorrow, Service Nation is hosting a Presidential Candidates Forum at Columbia in NYC. Hostle territory for a Republican candidate to say the least, but it get’s worse. The moderator for the forum is none other than Managing Editor of Time Magazine, Richard Stengel.
The illustrious Mr. Stengel has been quoted as saying:
No wonder Time has gone from a respectable magazine to the the sensationalist, left wing trash it is now.
This could get ugly.

This needs to be repeated across the net!! Great writing allah.

Fixed.
Freedom IS being challanged from within. Soros is getting old, his ego demands he see this through! He dumped Clinton for Obama, HE will HE must, make his move this election cycle! HE will do ANYTHING to win, ANYTHING. Those of you who have been watching have already seen and understand the desperation! It is just starting.
allrsn on September 10, 2008 at 2:13 AM
I said earlier:
So I couldn’t agree more. This campaign is like a football team that peaks at the beginning of the season. And that’s a hard hole to climb out of….50+ weeks to go must be a eternity to the already “anointed one”.
Ozprey on September 10, 2008 at 2:22 AM
Having read Paglia for years it is sometimes difficult to separate the political writer from the romantic. She loves strong beautiful people and Palin qualifies. Her reviews of movies and actors from the 30’s and 40’s are some of the best.
Putting aside her possible urges she nails the larger political stakes and social movements more often than not. This column, if it gets talked about by the general press, is capable of swinging a million votes should it be read by “left of center” women.
Camile is saying that it is ok to be, or vote for a woman that is, pro life and still be considered a staunch feminist. I can’t recall when I’ve read such a piece from a liberal woman, no less a lesbian.
As usual, Ms Paglia will be drawn and quartered by many for this piece–no worries, that’s another thing she likes.
patrick neid on September 10, 2008 at 2:35 AM
Good point, but this is a team with NO rules! Soros and the left have no concience to limit his or their actions.
allrsn on September 10, 2008 at 2:37 AM
I repeat Soros is getting old and desperate, his ego demands a win NOW!
allrsn on September 10, 2008 at 2:38 AM
OK at the risk of sounding dumb, I must ask: Who is this “Paglia’?
allrsn on September 10, 2008 at 2:39 AM
O crap, I did not click the link. OK I know now.

I don’t see Palin changing or adding to feminism in any way, for feminism has never truly been about women. Like global warming and other environmental issues, feminism has always been about liberal/Democrat/socialist politics–another vehicle of suppression of individual thought and opinion.
What I see Gov. Palin doing is enhancing the role of women in America without trying or intending it. Before her, too, is Condi Rice though Dr. Rice has been mostly behind the scenes.
In some measure, we can thank President Bush and the Republicans for this. What president before Bush 43 had a black woman as Secretary of State?
Now we have a strong woman as Republican VP candidate. Geraldine Ferraro was the first one, to be sure, but Mondale had no real hope of winning the White House. Ferraro counts in history but not in any substantive form in American politics. (no insult intended here)
On the opposite side, we also have a black man running for the White House.
I hear Europeans will hate us (more) if we don’t elect him. I’m trusting that doesn’t scare us.
We may be a bunch of cowboys, and I’m proud of that. But only in our United States of America could this kind of election happen.
It sure wouldn’t happen under Mugabe. Or Putin. Or whoever the hell is running North Korea at the moment.

Camille really gets some stuff, but Camille really doesn’t get some other stuff. It would be fascinating to listen in on her conversations with Rush.
Halley on September 10, 2008 at 3:51 AM
I first saw Camille Paglia on The Merv Griffin Show in the early ’80s. She said (from memory) “I come from an Italian family. Strong men and strong women.”
Her idea of “feminism” has always championed women being women and remaining women as women.
So, what is she, a lezbo or sumpthin’?

I know some people that are Pentecostal(not me..) but for the media to mock a Religion is the same as them mocking Catholicism, Mormon or Any other Religion..
Hey look at the Catholics.. what do they say in the confession booth? What are those beads for? Whats that smoking thing that that dude is swinging around do? hmmmm…
Whats up with the weird hats? ya see.. it can get silly.

Camile Paglia is the one feminist I would expect to support Palin. I’m glad she didn’t let me down.

After you clicked on the link, you hopefully realized that AP did not write what you thought he did.
Quotes around the excerpts is a good indicator that it wasn’t him.
You’re right to worry about Soros. Let’s teach him the ultimate lesson on who’s in charge of voting in this country.

Sarah Palin as a dangerous extremist; that facet of her personality may come to light before the election.
What we do know is; she’s a two faced, double talker and one helluva politician…!

as opposed to that earnest, naive, straight shooter Barack 2Koran’s for Sister Sarah O’bama…..

Has this alien to American culture ever visited earth?
Try spending a weekend in Maine, or any other State, where the weather is dangerous, the wages are not as high as everywhere else and husbands and wives cooperate to survive. My wife, and many women like her, have inherited the role that has been handed down to American women in terms of false equality, but she like others have actually made good at it. Honest women with honor that work hard, love their man and their children and don’t whine about it.
Comparing Madonna to that type of woman, with true grit and sense of justice and a true sense of equality is an insult to those women. Madonna has hurt the image of women and cheapened their role in modern society, which is just a part of her total failure as an American woman. She doesn’t deserve the title, and tarnishes the image of true female American heroes that make this the best country on the planet.

As a conservative Camille Paglia is one liberal I always read! She is smart and interesting and is never over-the-edge!

Good morning S_freude…
This is really getting to be some fun here.
I’m beginning to think many posters here, are actually demonstrating amazing psychic, insight…?
You all… are actually able to channel Barack’s subliminal, subconscious thoughts? All righty than…!
What’ll it be next, astral projection or out of body experiences…?

Rest in Peace, Thought Police.
Disturb the Universe on September 10, 2008 at 8:42 AM
OK, Mr. Fact-check.org. Go thou and read this and then get back to me with specific examples that demonstrate that she is an extremist. Oh, and by extremist, I don’t mean anything that you find offensive. Extremist means anything that is way outside mainstream points of view on both sides of the spectrum. So, for example, to believe in God, and to pray to God is not extreme, because huge swathes of the America public, and most presidents before, say, Kennedy invoked divine providence in public addresses. Being religious–not extreme. Believing that anyone of a different religion should be penalized in some way for it–extreme. Got it? Now get to work and back up your scurrilous charge, or go back to the DU and stay there.
smellthecoffee on September 10, 2008 at 9:06 AM
Ol’ Camille has one virtue if she has no other: she thinks for herself.
So, she probably thinks that her lesbianism is OK, but would talk your ear off if you had the opportunity to discuss it with her. She probably thinks that her support for Obama and her general social liberalism has rational underpinnings…and, once more, she’d bury you in verbiage if you gave her half a chance.
But, for as long as I’ve been reading her, these and the no doubt myriad other things which separate me from her pale when I take the time to actually give her an honest read. She is a modernist social critic, where fashion is reality, and yet she still manages to come to conclusions without letting fashion be the arbiter.
She thinks for herself. Let that be said of us and every one of us.
The fact, by the way, that she often puts into words ideas which were only shapeless, flabby notions in my head is another plus. I always tend to admire people who make ideas I claim as my own seem eloquent….

Being a pragmatic, understanding and some might say pandering politician; Sarah Palin addresses the Alaskan Independence Party convention.
J_Gocht on September 10, 2008 at 10:16 AM
Ok, and the extremism on her part is where? Sounds to me like she was gently reminding them that as governor her first priority is to the constitution of the State of Alaska, and suggesting that they not forget that either. “I share your party’s vision of upholding the constitution of our great state.” By implication, she doesn’t share their party’s vision of anything that is antithetical to that. Look, she obviously isn’t going straight at them, but her endorsement of them is clearly limited to those parts of what they are doing that forwards the causes of the mainstream–unless I’m mistaken and the constitution of the state of Alaska promotes secession from the state of Alaska. Still waiting for extremism on her part, not merely on the part of some of her constituents.
smellthecoffee on September 10, 2008 at 11:17 AM
Since Todd Palin is a constituent and was also a member of the AIP, we can’t count him, nevertheless…
Of course we know what some have said about Barack’s previous associations, don’t we…?
Now we are being apprised concerning one of Sarah’s continuing associates.
Could her husband possibably have any influence on her personal outlook, thought process or political inclinations…?
I say, zipp, zilch, nada, absolutely none!
J_Gocht on September 10, 2008 at 11:53 AM
Are you suggesting that Palin really wants Alaska to secede from the union and that her oath of office to become governor was a lie, that this religious fundmentalist put her hand on the bible and lied to her God in front of the whole state of Alaska? Even if she did, which is wildly farfetched, what would be the salience of this to her political situation here in the lower 48? As VP she would work through back channels to help Alaska secede? COME ON!!! Is that all you’ve got?
smellthecoffee on September 10, 2008 at 12:09 PM
Gosh I say again…!
J_Gocht on September 10, 2008 at 12:16 PM
You say nothing; you’re giving up on your claim that Palin is an extremist? Or do you reiterate sarcastically that the influence of Palin’s husband is zip, zero, etc., really meaning that it is significant to the point of being determinative?
What is your point, exactly? Zip, zero etc?

Don’t hold your breath waiting. J_Gocht’s typical modus operandi is that of a monkey, flinging poo.
