I’ve got an idea that could make it possible for you and your readers to have a direct impact on the drilling debate in Washington. Right now the Minerals Management Service (MMS) is collecting comments on its next five-year offshore leasing plan. The MMS – the federal agency responsible for administering the offshore oil and natural gas program – considers the size, timing, and location of the areas to be considered for federal leasing, and it bases its recommendations on the public’s comments. The plan is reviewed by Congress and approved by the Secretary of the Interior.
MMS is accepting public comments on its 2010-2015 plan until next Monday, September 15th. Apparently several anti-drilling groups have called on their members to flood MMS with comments. Therefore, the majority of comments oppose new leases. Considering that numerous national polls have shown Americans support increased drilling, their comments do not reflect the nation’s sentiments.
Showing support for drilling via MMS can have an immediate impact on the next leasing plan and can send a message to lawmakers. What are you talking about? McCain’s protege is heading up the gang of 22, Lindsey Grahamnesty. He’s not going to do anything to hurt McCain that McCain doesn’t want him too. Why is the Senate GOP ready to compromise on drilling? It’s a winning issue. Maybe, it’s because McCain doesn’t really want to drill, which would be consistent with his position since oh, 1997 or so. Graham is giving McCain cover. Kill drilling from the Senate and McCain doesn’t have to do anything. Everyone already hates the Senate GOP. Yes, McCain has ’said’ we should drill. But in the past he’s voted against drilling in ANWR. Actions speak louder than words. If McCain wasn’t the top of the ticket, he would be LEADING the gang of 22. Remember McCain has many areas of disagreement with Sarah Palin on policy. He picked her, yes, but that doesn’t mean he’s changed his mind on anything.

Given the cool summer we’ve had I’m predicting a bitter cold winter and no Dem wants to be held responsible for the high price of heating oil this year.

A cool summer after a very cool spring. Yeah, it really looks to be a long cold winter.

One of the fascinating developments of late is that nuclear energy has lost so much of its Fear Factor. It has been a third rail kind of thing for thirty years and now it has re-entered polite conversation. Of course I don’t think I’ll live long enough to see a new nuclear power plant get final, irrevocable approval.

You are correct, goat. Pelosi is on record recently being open to off-shore drilling, BUT her remarks also include provisions for punishing BIG OIL. She wants to tax the oil industry and take away its incentives while giving those same incentives to alternative fuel development.

Her shell game (ooh, bad pun) is to once again play on populist anger against BIG OIL, making it the boogyman for high prices YET create the impression that Republicans are in the pocket of BIG OIL if her plans are rejected.

Pelosi and Harry Reid may have finally figured out that they could lose this election on energy policy. Will this be enough to stanch the bleeding?

I wish they would just go away.
