Obama on McCain/Palin: “You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig”; Update: Video added; Update: “A pathetic attempt to play the gender card”

Perfectly innocent, I’m sure, just like Michelle’s bon mot last week about the importance of choosing a running mate who’s smart was perfectly innocent. Even though in that case, as in this one, reporters on the scene were so struck by the audience’s laughter they went out of their way to mention it.

Just your right-wing media exaggerating things as usual.

“That’s not change,” Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., said of what Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., is offering.

“You know, you can put lipstick on a pig,” Obama said, “but it’s still a pig.”

The crowd rose and applauded, some of them no doubt thinking he may have been alluding to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s ad lib during her vice presidential nomination acceptance speech last week, “What’s the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick.”

That’s Jake Tapper and a co-author, themselves “no doubt thinking” that Obama was kinda sorta calling Palin a pig. Otherwise they wouldn’t have wasted a post on what was otherwise a throwaway line at a random town hall.

And they’re not the only ones who took it that way.

Exit question: I defended him when he took heat from women for the “likeable enough” comment and his Annie Oakley goof on Hillary, but then came “sweetie” and now this. How come The One keeps running into these funny little misunderstandings with comments aimed at women politicians?

Update: Bear in mind as the inevitable nutroots naysaying about this gets going how insistent and ingenious they were in spinning secret offensive subtexts out of McCain’s ads. They’ll drill through six feet of bedrock to find “code” in something a conservative says, but they won’t dust off the topsoil of Obama’s comments.

Update:

Update: Here’s the video; the McCain camp is already coming after him for it. He doesn’t overemphasize the line, as you might think he would if he really wanted to hammer the point, but then if he hammered the point he wouldn’t have plausible deniability. Having watched it, I’m inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt — more so than Kaus is, apparently — just because I hate when the left pulls this with innocent statements made by conservatives. But again, the point isn’t what he actually meant, which we can’t know; the point is how different those secret liberal racial/gender decoder rings seem to work when it’s one of their guys in the hot seat. David Bellavia, a war hero, got smeared with accusations of unconscious racism on MSNBC for making an innocent remark about Tiger Woods. Fortunately, the Messiah is above such unconscious impulses.

Update: And right on cue, here’s the governor of New York drilling through six feet of bedrock.

Update: Here’s Gov. Jane Swift laying into Obama on Team Maverick’s conference call this afternoon.

Update: The campaign that played the race card so skillfully against the Clintons suddenly locates its scruples.

“Enough is enough,” Obama senior adviser Anita Dunn said in a statement e-mailed to reporters

“The McCain campaign’s attack tonight is a pathetic attempt to play the gender card about the use of a common analogy – the same analogy that Senator McCain himself used about Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s health care plan just last year,” she continued. “This phony lecture on gender sensitivity is the height of cynicism and lays bare the increasingly dishonorable campaign John McCain has chosen to run.”

Here’s a story of McCain using it last year. Hillary, of course, hadn’t made any lipstick references to herself before then so there was no context for McCain to play off of.

What swill.

Schweine are indignant, and they are so much cleaner, really.

McCain’s campaign immediately organized a telephone conference call in response and called on Obama to apologize for calling Palin a pig. Obama’s campaign said he wasn’t referring to Palin; he had been talking about McCain immediately before the lipstick comment.

Then he called McCain a pig. Either way, he called McCain or Palin a pig.

I’m so glad we live in the time of video. And those morons applauding. What fools.

Schadenfreude is becoming a weak word. ‘Pigs’ are squealing, and it ain’t pretty.

Nothing like self-destruction. No need for enemies. None.

That’s easy: two reasons. First, Obama is one of the dumbest smart people any of us will ever know. Second, deep down, in truth, he’s a f***ing a**hole.

BuckeyeSam on September 9, 2008 at 8:39 PM

Obama loving media goes to work defending their chosen one.

But Obama’s comments at a town-hall meeting in southwestern Virginia may have been misinterpreted by the audience.

“You can put lipstick on a pig. It’s still a pig,” he said as the crowd cheered and yelled and eventually got to their feet.

So now it’s Obama’s audience and supporters fault? Good God!

Ace:

Clever! In referencing Hillary on the trail, Obama coyly flipped her the middle finger in a way that I’m 100% sure was deliberate but was so casually done he couldn’t really get socked with it.

Why did he do it? Perhaps to provoke an overheated response from Hillary (which he didn’t get– but it was still clever to try).

Is that what Obama’s thinking here? Get McCain and Palin to overreact and make everyone think she’s just a silly girl who gets upset by stray references to pigs?

I don’t know. If that’s his aim, it is clever.

The McCain campaign has a press conference call in a few minutes to respond to Obama’s statement. I’m guessing there’s a pretty strong temptation to cry sexism. Hopefully everyone remembers that Palin’s RNC speech was so effective not because she was outraged but because she delivered a devastating attack on Obama with a smile on her face and a stiletto in her hand.

Folks, snark should have been used.. DON’T CRY SEXISM IF IT ENDS UP MAKING YOU BETA… right now Team Obama are waiting for an overreach so settle down with the Outrage! while not letting him off the hook.

Allahpundit,
How can you possibly have a doubt about what Obama meant? Are you that eager to appease the Left with such a weak rationalization? Did you hear the whole section of the speech where Obama talks then about an old fish that stinks … McCain. Give me a break. This guy is smart and vindictive and to even doubt what is so obvious is to have let one’s mental machinations overcome one’s gut instincts. Why do you think Obama paused after the word, “lipstick”? He was waiting for the crowd to get the connection — and then they applauded. If he said it quicker, I would even have a small doubt but no, he knew exactly what he was saying.

When you get right down to it, the internet left and the internet right are basically two sides of the very same coin. Neither will admit it though of course, which makes them even more the same.

Actually, the left and the right side of the blogosphere are remarkably different, and it is a reflection of the differences between the left and the right in general I believe.

The right side is individualistic, with individual sites and bloggers arguing different ideas within the greater rubric of conservative thought.

The left side tends to be focus on themes from above, even co-ordinating behind the scenes (ala “townhouse”) to make sure there is as little variation from the talking points of the day as possible. To the extent that there is discussion it is what are the best strategies to win…

El_Terrible on September 9, 2008 at 8:55 PM

Obama hasn’t gotten over Palin’s “community organizer” line yet. He probably never will. So far it’s the campaign’s equivalent of Bentsen’s 1988 line:

Bentsen: Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy: I knew Jack Kennedy; Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you’re no Jack Kennedy.

Palin: I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities.

Screw this “demand a apology” crap. You can be a leader when you play the victim. Instead attack him back. Say how sorry you are after all the sexist comments he made during the primaries against Hillary, he is now repeating this pattern against Palin. Openly speculate about how maybe he is threatened by the spectre of a powerful and accomplished woman. Say that woman have seen this all before and they’ll send their own message to Barack and his sexist friends in November.

But don’t ask for an apology.

If Obama had said pig-dog he might have been ok

Put lipstick on a pig-dog and it’s still a pig-dog

People would have been so confused it would have flopped, sunk and died a decent death but the Iranian leaders would still get the joke

But pig is common slang for ‘ugly woman’. (Who was that pig I saw you with last night?) Once BO said ‘lipstick’, the object was assumed to be female, a pig, and the rest will be in history books

Skank would also have been a bad choice.

HOWEVER, I suspect the Obama campaign had coined both those lines (pig/lipstick and fish/wrap) as a result of the “Pit Bull” Sarah “Barracuda”…. and he meant to slip them in where he could safely get away with it.

Wait, this whole campaign was centered around us as Americans forgetting his “funny name” and his race. We did that bigtime. He was a rockstar. The Islam thing was just a lingering concern on the right and for a sensible reason because he seems like he’s not quite truthful.

In return for that respect, we are allowed to demand that he not be a sexist and shove women out of his path to power. Blacks and women should have equal respect, but he’s not upholding that unwritten deal.

If he is a blatantly and repeatedly sexist, then it needs to be pointed out for him that he’s just as wrong as a racist dropping distasteful subtle hints about his blackness.

Why people are so sensitive to make this point is silly and shows just how PC thoughtcrime has burrowed into our brains. Someone like Krauthammer needs to lay down the rules of polite society for him. You can’t lead a nation with this language regarding your female opponents and also play the race card.

About that conference call – Jane Swift is not a very good advocate for the McCain campaign. She should have read this blog (and others) and watched the video several times before accepting calls from the LAT and the like saying Obambi wasn’t referring to Palin at all. Swift resorts to a Messiah-esque “Uh, uh, uh…” a little too much for her to be effective at beating down Dem/MSM attacks.

Also, I guess the libtards will be running often to Mav’s dig at Mitt during the primaries when he quoted Mark Twain about rolling in the mud with pigs. And if it wasn’t Mark Twain who said that, I’m sure someone will let me know.

Listening to the full quote from Obama, it sounds as if he was in ‘Teleprompter Off’ mode, and was just flailing around for an analogy when he dug the “Lipstick on a pig” analogy out of his brain.

The problem is once the Obama campaign came back with their “McCain did it to Hillary in 2007″ analogy, they pretty much locked the campaign into the idea that, even if it wasn’t meant as a direct slap at Palin, it was justified because Maverick did it first (even if he was talking specifically about Hillary’s health care plan. You can’t say “He wasn’t talking about Palin” at the same time they’re saying it was OK to attack her because McCain did it earlier.

I’m just very happy.

I just listened to Huckabee defend Obama over this statement. So why give this clown the benefit of the doubt? When do republicans get the benefit of the doubt? As far as I’m concerned, what goes around, comes around. These people make a living doing this same thing to Republicans. I tired of our side fighting with pillows and feathers. Screw’em

Keep moving – nothing to see here.

Fuquay Steve on September 9, 2008 at 9:12 PM

Is it possible that this was an off the cuff statement? Maybe. But combined with the dead fish part right after it it’s a lot more likely that it was scripted.

I agree with AP that one of the most annoying things about the left is how they blow stuff waaaay out of proportion with faux outrage, but I’m not inclined to let The One off the hook on this one.

Is this Obama’s “macaca” moment?

JustTruth101 on September 9, 2008 at 8:39 PM

No. It can’t be because a Macaca moment requires a media determined to latch onto any misstatement to bring down its victim. Sen. Santorum was a target due to his party affiliation and his politics.

Sen. Obama cannot have a Macaca moment because the media are there to support him and to suppress his mistakes, not to expose them.

Blaise on September 9, 2008 at 9:13 PM

This is his ’shuck and jive’ accent he likes to use when he’s not in front of a teleprompter. He seems to think it will help him connect with the little people.

It’s really a turn off. He should just take that nonsense and his sorry ass back to the Southside of Chicago.

Cody1991 on September 9, 2008 at 7:56 PM

Perhaps. However, my southside Chicago relatives also have that accent. I do think it’s annoying though.

About the pig thing: that it seemed to be a reference to McCain policy gave the statement plausible deniability, but it was a slur nonetheless.

Obama’s minions have been on the attack against Palin since the announcement and have used lower weapons and epithets than this. And didn’t Bob Beckel use a pig analogy with Palin as the target just yesterday?

The amazing thing isn’t the viciousness, but the stupidity.

JustTruth101 on September 9, 2008 at 8:39 PM

Macaca isn’t even a word … and yet the left was offended.

If Sarah Palin is a pig, what does that make Michelle Obama… Cheetah?

D2Boston on September 9, 2008 at 9:13 PM

I think I’m pretty objective, hell I even defend Obama on the Muslim stuff but Obama’s body language says it all. GUILTY!

This has to be handled without whining.

McCain should ask for an apology for being called a “stinking eight year old fish” which i overlooked until reading MM’s post.
