Obama on McCain/Palin: “You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig”; Update: Video added; Update: “A pathetic attempt to play the gender card”

Perfectly innocent, I’m sure, just like Michelle’s bon mot last week about the importance of choosing a running mate who’s smart was perfectly innocent. Even though in that case, as in this one, reporters on the scene were so struck by the audience’s laughter they went out of their way to mention it.
Just your right-wing media exaggerating things as usual.
“That’s not change,” Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., said of what Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., is offering.
“You know, you can put lipstick on a pig,” Obama said, “but it’s still a pig.”
The crowd rose and applauded, some of them no doubt thinking he may have been alluding to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s ad lib during her vice presidential nomination acceptance speech last week, “What’s the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick.”
That’s Jake Tapper and a co-author, themselves “no doubt thinking” that Obama was kinda sorta calling Palin a pig. Otherwise they wouldn’t have wasted a post on what was otherwise a throwaway line at a random town hall.
And they’re not the only ones who took it that way.
Exit question: I defended him when he took heat from women for the “likeable enough” comment and his Annie Oakley goof on Hillary, but then came “sweetie” and now this. How come The One keeps running into these funny little misunderstandings with comments aimed at women politicians?
Update: Bear in mind as the inevitable nutroots naysaying about this gets going how insistent and ingenious they were in spinning secret offensive subtexts out of McCain’s ads. They’ll drill through six feet of bedrock to find “code” in something a conservative says, but they won’t dust off the topsoil of Obama’s comments.
Update:

Update: Here’s the video; the McCain camp is already coming after him for it. He doesn’t overemphasize the line, as you might think he would if he really wanted to hammer the point, but then if he hammered the point he wouldn’t have plausible deniability. Having watched it, I’m inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt — more so than Kaus is, apparently — just because I hate when the left pulls this with innocent statements made by conservatives. But again, the point isn’t what he actually meant, which we can’t know; the point is how different those secret liberal racial/gender decoder rings seem to work when it’s one of their guys in the hot seat. David Bellavia, a war hero, got smeared with accusations of unconscious racism on MSNBC for making an innocent remark about Tiger Woods. Fortunately, the Messiah is above such unconscious impulses.
Update: And right on cue, here’s the governor of New York drilling through six feet of bedrock.
Update: Here’s Gov. Jane Swift laying into Obama on Team Maverick’s conference call this afternoon.
Update: The campaign that played the race card so skillfully against the Clintons suddenly locates its scruples.
“Enough is enough,” Obama senior adviser Anita Dunn said in a statement e-mailed to reporters
“The McCain campaign’s attack tonight is a pathetic attempt to play the gender card about the use of a common analogy – the same analogy that Senator McCain himself used about Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s health care plan just last year,” she continued. “This phony lecture on gender sensitivity is the height of cynicism and lays bare the increasingly dishonorable campaign John McCain has chosen to run.”
Here’s a story of McCain using it last year. Hillary, of course, hadn’t made any lipstick references to herself before then so there was no context for McCain to play off of.

Anybody watching Obama tap-dance on O’Reilly right now?

The Dailykos has been working on the “Lipstick on Pig” line towards Palin for a couple of days now.

You move Barry away from the teleprompter and he makes gaffe after gaffe after gaffe.
Now, the McCain/Palin team can defuse this by stating that “this was not a personal attack”.
But I would just let Barry and his runaway mouth twist in the wind for about 24 hours. That way it can be “seared into the memory” of the people.
Just keep talking Barry, you’re gonna lose this election all by yourself.

So anyone who votes for Obama come November is not a decent American? That could be as high as 50+ percent. Let’s be frank here – How can anyone ever claim to love America and be a patriot if they hold half their fellow countrymen in utter contempt? Ditto for those on the other side who would say – “Let’s be frank here–McCain really doesn’t rate in the hearts and minds of decent Americans. Two sides of the same coin.

I think it was intentional. He got the same smirk he had when he gave Hillary the finger. Or perhaps I should say when he cocked his head, smirked and then rubbed the side of his face with his middle finger.
Innocent gesture I am sure. you betcha.
Sarah Palin said, Do you know what the difference between a hockey Mom and a pit bull? Lipstick. Brought down the house.
And now in front of his adoring fans he smirks and makes some weird statement about pigs and lipstick?

You cut off the video clip too soon. The other half of the quote is even worse: “you can wrap a dead fish in paper marked “change”, and it’s still going to stink.”
We’re seeing a full meltdown here, I think, as “the One” sees his lead disappear, and he’s no longer center stage by himself – his ego can’t take it, which is why he keeps coming back to commenting on Palin, b/c it’s the only way he can get all the media attention back on him.

It’s great how liberals can call someone a pig, yet then later say they weren’t and this be acceptable.
Anyone who thinks the black guy wasn’t calling the white lady a pig is not only naive but also a democrat.

O’Reilly surprised me. He went after Obama pretty hard. McCain should be able to mine some gold from that…..
FiveWays on September 9, 2008 at 8:18 PM
I’ve found on the job sites I’ve been on over the years, “putting lipstick on a pig” is meant as a joke. For example to put a couple of fresh coats of paint on a beat up old shack would be considered “lipstick on a pig”. I heard Bob Beckel say this the other day and couldn’t believe it. With Obama using the line now, it only shows me how desperate they are to try to sound like the gun totin’ bible thumpers that they are pissing off every day. Sort of reminds me of when Kerry wanted to get “one of them thar fishin licenses”. Any one else noticing that O’s team is pulling out the “for before was against” strategy now? Using Republican point from 2004 against Kerry to use vs McCain/Palin?…..Priceless……

If he was talking about mccain policies, he would not have used the pig lipstick and old-fish line. It’s obvious what he was saying, and it shows how desperate the obama camp is. If a republican said that we wouldn’t hear the end of it.

Obama gets ovation with ‘lipstick on pig’
LEBANON, Va – Democrat Barack Obama enjoys poking fun at his Republican opponents and their claims to being “agents of change.”
“You can put lipstick on a pig. It’s still a pig,” he said as the crowd cheered and yelled and eventually got to their feet.
“You can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change. It’s still gonna stink.”
“We’ve had enough of the same old thing.”
The audience, which had a particularly strong reaction whenever Obama mentioned Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, appeared to enjoy the “lipstick” comment the most.
When Palin gave her acceptance speech at the Republican convention in St. Paul she joked about being a hockey mom, saying the only difference between a pitbull and a hockey mom was lipstick.

I dunno if it was innocent but I’d hardly call this sexist. The comment was squarely aimed at McCain, Palin wasn’t even mentioned in the video clip.
Typhonsentra on September 9, 2008 at 8:23 PM
Actually, it IS an old expression. But in a multi-cultural setting (better strap yourself in for this one), people can take it in different ways.
For example, I could use another equally time-honored expression: “A monkey in a silk suit is still a monkey.” And the only thing people would say is, hey, he called that black guy a monkey. We’d hear about it for weeks. Al Sharpton would be camped out on my lawn. David Letterman would invite me on his show to insult me in person. Bill Maher would say something really stupid. This would go on until they got bored with it.
The result would be 72 hours I’d never get back again. All because a comment took on a life of its own.
People should focus on the issues in this election. Usually that means they want to avoid character assaults. On the other hand, character is an issue. So let’s make it one. But when Sarah Palin made a lipstick joke, it was at her own expense. Let’s see Obama try that.
manwithblackhat on September 9, 2008 at 8:23 PM
What a great day for Obambi. He calls Sarah Palin a pig. Joe Biden tells a lame man to stand up so the crowd can get a look at him. A black guy claims to be the father of Bristol Palin’s baby. He’s down five points in Florida. He looks like a blithering idiot on O’Reilly. I’m sure there’s plenty more.

A year and a half.
Obama just said that he hadn’t seen Ayers in a year and a half.
Tonight’s interview on O’Reilly only underscored the fact that we don’t see friends and coworkers of Obama’s offering up testimonials. No college friends. No high school friends. No families he helped as a Community Organizer. No coworkers.
In contrast, just last night on Greta, she interviewed 6 friends/coworkers of Sarah Palin. Six. On the drop of a dime.
Obama is a Presidential candidate; and the one word that comes to mind to describe his unusual lack of friends – sinister

FiveWays on September 9, 2008 at 8:27 PM
Shephard Smith closed out his broadcast by saying the Obama campaign responded to the McCain campaign’s demand for an apology by saying McCain used the same phrasing last year:
The problem here is by coming back this way, the Obama campaign’s defense seems to be “You called Hillary a pig, so we can call Sarah Palin one, too.” But the McCain quote is about Hillary’s health care plans. Obama and his people can try to Clintonesqely parce today quip and say they were talking about policy and weren’t being personal, but coming less than a week after Palin’s lipstick line at the convention, there’s no way people are going to hear that and not think it was meant as a direct insult at her.
jon1979 on September 9, 2008 at 8:27 PM

Here’s the rough equivalent:
Obama gives a masterful speech in Denver. At the end he talks about how he used the same typewriter Martin Luther King did to type out the inspiring words for a new generation of change, and the entire nation cried when he said it and talked about typewriters all week.
McCain then says something like, “You could put a thousand monkeys in front of a thousand typewriters and it still wouldn’t improve his ideas for a ghetto America.”
Then in response to outraged criticism, “Oh, I was just talking about ideas that would make us very poor and also referring to the infinite monkey theorem”

Barry really thinks Americans are stupid,..Gov Palin says the pit bull/lipstick joke, then Barry says “You know, you can put lipstick on a pig,” Obama said, “but it’s still a pig.”
