Obama on McCain/Palin: “You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig”; Update: Video added; Update: “A pathetic attempt to play the gender card”

Perfectly innocent, I’m sure, just like Michelle’s bon mot last week about the importance of choosing a running mate who’s smart was perfectly innocent. Even though in that case, as in this one, reporters on the scene were so struck by the audience’s laughter they went out of their way to mention it.
Just your right-wing media exaggerating things as usual.
“That’s not change,” Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., said of what Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., is offering.
“You know, you can put lipstick on a pig,” Obama said, “but it’s still a pig.”
The crowd rose and applauded, some of them no doubt thinking he may have been alluding to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s ad lib during her vice presidential nomination acceptance speech last week, “What’s the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick.”
That’s Jake Tapper and a co-author, themselves “no doubt thinking” that Obama was kinda sorta calling Palin a pig. Otherwise they wouldn’t have wasted a post on what was otherwise a throwaway line at a random town hall.
And they’re not the only ones who took it that way.
Exit question: I defended him when he took heat from women for the “likeable enough” comment and his Annie Oakley goof on Hillary, but then came “sweetie” and now this. How come The One keeps running into these funny little misunderstandings with comments aimed at women politicians?
Update: Bear in mind as the inevitable nutroots naysaying about this gets going how insistent and ingenious they were in spinning secret offensive subtexts out of McCain’s ads. They’ll drill through six feet of bedrock to find “code” in something a conservative says, but they won’t dust off the topsoil of Obama’s comments.
Update:

Update: Here’s the video; the McCain camp is already coming after him for it. He doesn’t overemphasize the line, as you might think he would if he really wanted to hammer the point, but then if he hammered the point he wouldn’t have plausible deniability. Having watched it, I’m inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt — more so than Kaus is, apparently — just because I hate when the left pulls this with innocent statements made by conservatives. But again, the point isn’t what he actually meant, which we can’t know; the point is how different those secret liberal racial/gender decoder rings seem to work when it’s one of their guys in the hot seat. David Bellavia, a war hero, got smeared with accusations of unconscious racism on MSNBC for making an innocent remark about Tiger Woods. Fortunately, the Messiah is above such unconscious impulses.
Update: And right on cue, here’s the governor of New York drilling through six feet of bedrock.
Update: Here’s Gov. Jane Swift laying into Obama on Team Maverick’s conference call this afternoon.
Update: The campaign that played the race card so skillfully against the Clintons suddenly locates its scruples.
“Enough is enough,” Obama senior adviser Anita Dunn said in a statement e-mailed to reporters
“The McCain campaign’s attack tonight is a pathetic attempt to play the gender card about the use of a common analogy – the same analogy that Senator McCain himself used about Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton’s health care plan just last year,” she continued. “This phony lecture on gender sensitivity is the height of cynicism and lays bare the increasingly dishonorable campaign John McCain has chosen to run.”
Here’s a story of McCain using it last year. Hillary, of course, hadn’t made any lipstick references to herself before then so there was no context for McCain to play off of.

After watching the video… I agree with you, AP. I hate when libs do this to us.. and it seems to me that he’s using Palin’s line to refer to McCain’s policy.. obviously can be taken out of context, though with a simple quotation of the punch line.
henzou on September 9, 2008 at 7:45 PM
Interesting – ever notice when Obama thinks he’s landing a punchline he touches his face? Usually it’s that two-finger tip of the nose rub (which is a bit gross), this time he wiped his forehead.
Still, Obama looks pretty darned comfortable down there in the political slop – hope, change, new kind of politics?
Keep the insults coming, all it proves is that Palin’s got a bigger pair than this panty-waist Obama.

Palin had it exactly correct when she pegged him as someone who talks to the “little people” one way when in front of them and another when he’s in L.A.

Welcome to Presidential politics. It is all about identity. Do you identify with the guy? Do you like the guy. 90% of voters who are now undecided will vote for the person they like.
bnelson44 on September 9, 2008 at 7:46 PM
In a vacuum, I might be willing to give him more of the benefit of the doubt, as it didn’t seem so bad on the video. But in the less than 2 weeks that Palin has been on the national stage, the number and intensity of vicious, personal attacks made on her by Obama surrogates makes it much more difficult to extract it from that context. Couple that with the sense of panic in Obama’s campaign and it looks even worse.

Since we all know the Tolerant Left would carpet-bomb anyone left of Arlen Specter for saying something along these lines (about Hillary, say), we can start by saying they would have immediately gone for the throat of Dubya, Dan Quayle… heck, any nationally known conservative.
Remember the hand-wringing when Connie Chung convinced Newt’s mom (by saying it would never air, of course) to tell her that she had heard Newt call Hillary a “b***h?”
I hope this sticks to the Obama campaign like a rabid headcrab.

The dems internally polling must be far worse than what is being published. While the MSM is going to provide cover, it’s in the wind now and Americans will quietly determine what was intended by this statement. I’ve been to DU, its right in front of your eyes how they are internalizing BO’s statement.
swami on September 9, 2008 at 7:50 PM
Look this was a talking point for the Dems. Multiple people were saying the pig line to slam Palin back in her place. He can’t claim innocence.
And the old stinky fish line was directed at McCain/Palin too. That’s the “new narrative” they just tried to hang around their necks, trying to be too cute by half.
Had someone been standing in my house and said those “clever” pig and stinky fish comments in relation to a debate with my wife on an issue, they would have never left conscious. One punch would not have been enough punishment.
econavenger on September 9, 2008 at 7:50 PM
I don’t give a rat’s ass about what Barry thinks he meant. A conservative would have been tarred, feathered, drawn and quartered by now for a similarly careless remark. Words are all that Obama has to sell, and he can live and die by them. This guy dreams he’s got the chops to negotiate with our enemies, for cripes sake.
Screw trying to be “fair” about things.

ninjapirate on September 9, 2008 at 7:51 PM
~sighs~
Let’s be frank here–Obama really doesn’t rate in the hearts and minds of decent Americans. He’s a ‘contender’, but only of sorts. Maybe I’m wrong, but he’s in the race only because of his race. The Dems couldn’t sell Hillary so they went to second-choice. A ploy–if you don’t vote for the black candidate you’re a racist; his politics can’t be allowed as a factor.
Whatever he says about Gov. Palin is just a comedy, a stand-up routine. His attacks against her aren’t newsworthy unless we want it shown what kind of cad this does-nothing liberal can be.
Liam on September 9, 2008 at 7:51 PM
C’mon. He’s clearly winging his campaign now. He wants to recapture the magic from his audience. He no longer can worry what it looks like from afar. Did you think his flame-out was going to be pretty? Watch for greater arrogance, self-pity, blaming others, claims of persecution. Obama the creation is unraveling.

Only one of the four candidate’s wears lipstick. Only one of the candidate’s told a joke that included “lipstick” in the joke while giving her speech at the GOP convention.
Obama directed that stab at Palin, let’s not kid ourselves here. Obama is not afraid of McCain, as he held a lead over McCain until Palin was added to the ticket. Obama only knows one way of doing business; Chicago mob style thuggery old school politics. The man only knows one way forward, destroy your opponent by any and all means necessary. Sarah has become his opponent. Obama has sent his own personal team of lawyers (assorted thugs) to Alaska. The Liberal Media has sent a huge team of thugs to Alaska. These people only know one way forward.
Obama and his thugs are at war. This reminds me of the many times America was attacked by OBL prior to the events of 9/11, and America refused to call it war. Obama, the Democrat Party, the Liberal Media, and all other divisions that make up this army are taking it to the enemy. The war has already begun.
Keemo on September 9, 2008 at 7:52 PM
Osama Obama knew exactly what he was saying. There is no “interpretation” possible here.
If any other candidate said this, they would be pressured heavily to drop out of the race by the MSM and their own party organizations.

But the candidate of terrorists, convicted felons and race-haters can do no wrong.
He needs to be slammed over this. Relentlessly.

You’re right – it is a mistake. I don’t think Obama is relying on his political advisors as much as he should. I think he’s listening to Michelle (hence the Biden pick). He obviously should have picked Hillary. What a dOpe.
I think he’s playing to the base for the reason that Krauthammer or Spengler (?) or one of those political analysts said – Obama is fundamentally a coward. He has never been tested in any arena, as far as I can tell, so losing the spotlight to Palin is panicking him. Without constant positive reinforcement his natural instinct is to run back to his base to get the adulation of his loyal followers.
Plus, they want the money they can raise, so he needs the inflammatory rhetoric to open those wallets. Obama was criticized for shifting to the right on the war, so he’s shifting back to left to satisfy the leftist big money donors.
Personally, I don’t think advertising will help him (the lipstick has been wiped off the Dem’s candidate, to borrow his words) so in that sense I don’t think having the most money will matter. What gives me a sick feeling in my stomach is the thought that the money they raise will be used, not to advertise, but rather to mobilize an army of operatives in swing states to buy and steal votes. I was appalled to hear about Obama’s plan to provide street money to buy votes in Philadelphia. (When I get discouraged like that I listen to Rush and realize it is not a productive train of thought.)

While the phrase itself may be commonly used ..it isn’t a phrase one commonly thinks of off the top of their head especially in a setting such as this.
This was scripted… it had been planted into his head..

This goes to the larger point of why Obama is bringing back his John Stewart/Eddie Murphy comedy routine on the stump. He tried this earlier in the summer when the Republicans were mocking his tire inflation energy strategy. Obama doesn’t do comedy well, he comes off as arrogant and childish, especially with that annoying chuckle that he tries to pass off as genuine laughter.
This entire week Obama has been mired in attacking Palin, the other day he was laughing that Alaska was the only state he has not visited. Yesterday he said this:
Barack Obama: No, no it’s an interesting story (crowd laughs), no, no it is, I mean that sincerely. I mean I think you know, you know it’s uh, Mother, Governor, Moose Shooter. I mean uh, it’s cool. No that’s cool. (Crowd laughs)
So in Politics 101, what chapter is it that states you gain political points by making fun of hunters. Someone, anyone, Bueller, Axelrod, Axelrod. Perhaps after this campaign is over Axelrod and Obama will co-teach a class on how to lose an election when every single factor in the environment favors your party.

marklmail on September 9, 2008 at 7:58 PM
So, I calmed down and watched the YouTube video of the quote in context. Obama was talking about McCain policies. But, on the other hand, there is still the context of one of the most famous phrases that came out of the Republican convention, less than 1 week ago.
To me, the key determining factor here is: has Obama used that phrase before, more than once in his stump speeches. If so, then I agree, it has nothing to do with Governor Palin. Does anybody know?
However, if this is his first use of that phrase, then he was being stupid to use that particular phrase, not seeing the obvious connection to Governor Palin? Or, was he intentionally using it to give her a dig, and camouflaging it to give himself cover? In this case, it was either a major gaffe, or an intentional slur.

And this is proving to be the Achille’s heel of the Obama campaign…the best they’ve been able to come up with thus far is a string of smears, rumors, and pseudo-scandals. People have heard it all before – and worse – from right there in the heart of the Democrat party. Once you’ve heard about ol’ Billy Jeff’s sexual escapades – in glaring, technicolor detail – you become pretty jaded, scandal-wise.

Interesting. He keeps making these ‘mistakes.’
When you watch the video where he conveniently scratches his right cheek with his right middle finger, and the crow roars with approval – it really does look like he’s flipping her the finger. Watch the two women in the back left as the one has to explain it to the other and her reaction.
I agree. If the left want to use the ‘phallic’ complaint against the images of Obama in Germany, then these many examples, including the ‘oh, I didn’t say anything about Palin – lipstick! lipstick! lipstick!’
…. it’s pretty obvious. Because an honest mistake doesn’t happen this often.

We saw inklings of the inner thug behind Obama’s slick demeanor during the primaries. Now, the country is getting the opportunity to see it in its full glory. There are two things keeping Osama Obama afloat right now: one is the silence of the MSM about his reckless mouth, history, lies, distortions and associations — the usual race-hatred, traitor and felon crowd — and the desire of too many Republicans not to sink to his level.
It’s time we learn that giving is better than receiving. Call him on all the BS. Show him for the pathetic, cowardly little twerp he is.
Give him something to really cry about: tell the truth about him. Loudly and often.
Some may find it funny now, but I suspect it won’t seem so amusing if this creep wins the election.

I saw the clip.
I don’t know, that looked kind of normal.
Missing the point entirely, bumbling his lines like he always does off script, but I think you have to be reading things into it to get an insult of Palin out.

Remmber when Hillary tried the “Kentucky Fried Hillary” accent? Now that was authentic.
/sarc off.

In light of Gov. Palin’s hockey mom/lipstick ad-lib during her speech last week, I find it hard to believe this was a simple slip of The Messiah’s tongue. Her image is burned onto his brain like it’s a cheap plasma screen.

I agree. McCain should just release a statement (or better yet have Palin come out and say):
So I hear Obama said the lipstick on a pig comment yesterday. Guess he -did- learn something from sitting in Rev Wright’s church for 20 years.

Has he used this phrase before in the 19 months on the campaign trail, or is this the very first time?
