Hatred in Canada alive and well

posted at 8:20 am on September 9, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Remember when Mark Steyn and Ezra Levant had to spend a lot of money answering to Canada’s absurd Human Rights Commission over charges of “hatred” for their work in pointing out the demographics of Islam in the West?  I wonder what their HRC will make of Heather Mallick.  After all, if Canada wants to stamp out “hatred”, then her column last week on Sarah Palin seems like a fine place to start:

I assume John McCain chose Sarah Palin as his vice-presidential partner in a fit of pique because the Republican money men refused to let him have the stuffed male shirt he really wanted. She added nothing to the ticket that the Republicans didn’t already have sewn up, the white trash vote, the demographic that sullies America’s name inside and outside its borders yet has such a curious appeal for the right.

So why do it?

It’s possible that Republican men, sexual inadequates that they are, really believe that women will vote for a woman just because she’s a woman. They’re unfamiliar with our true natures. Do they think vaginas call out to each other in the jungle night? I mean, I know men have their secret meetings at which they pledge to do manly things, like being irresponsible with their semen and postponing household repairs with glue and used matches. Guys will be guys, obviously.

Surely, this must be satire, you ask yourself about now, just as I did.  A bit of journalistic irony in eventually complimenting Republicans for reaching past stereotypes and selecting the first Republican woman for a national ticket.  Surely Mallick can’t be serious, you state.

But she is … and don’t call me Shirley.

Palin was not a sure choice, not even for the stolidly Republican ladies branch of Citizens for a Tackier America. No, she isn’t even female really. She’s a type, and she comes in male form too. …

Palin has a toned-down version of the porn actress look favoured by this decade’s woman, the overtreated hair, puffy lips and permanently alarmed expression. Bristol has what is known in Britain as the look of the teen mum, the “pramface.”

It takes Mallick several paragraphs before she can tear herself away from attacking Palin’s family, but not before she calls on them to shoot their new son-in-law-to-be for impregnating their daughter.  Now, perhaps I’m just not recalling it properly, but I don’t believe that Steyn or Levant ever even suggested violence in their reports on Islam’s growth in the West.  Nor did either write anything so deranged as Mallick did for the CBC, Canada’s major broadcaster.

Canada’s HRC and its affiliates in the provinces are offenses against free speech.  I don’t think they should exist at all, as their very existence puts a strong chill on political speech.  However, no one in Canada seemed outraged enough to stop them from shuttering Levant’s magazine and attempting to bankrupt both Levant and Steyn for some imagined hatred.  Mallick has made it explicit.  Will the Human Rights Commission now bankrupt the CBC in a similar manner, or will they expose themselves as nothing more than a partisan attack dog for the Left?  (via The Anchoress)

I would never have guessed that Sarah Palin would been seen as such a threat to the worldwide left, but there it is. Amazing, really. God, I love seeing these losers become so flustered and angry. It just confirms that Mac made an excellent decision with Palin.
holygoat on September 9, 2008 at 9:32 AM

And after 8 years of teh hated boosh … what will these people do with another 4, or maybe a total of 16 years without their beloved democrats in power. How ever will they react? Flustered and angry can’t stay that way forever.

… Go off the deep end. Please. Maybe this will be a great opportunity for the mentally deficient to remove themselves from the gene pool, and do this country and the world a great service.

This woman clearly speaks for all Canadians, including Mark Steyn, David Frum, the editorial staff of the National Post, the governing Conservative Party of Canada, and the Canadians who voted for them.

She appeals only to the tiny, tiny minority of Canadians who live in cold climates and who take their kids to hockey practice.

Like I said, a microscopic minority.

There will be nonfactors in all socialist countries who will look at her success as a woman, as a maverick, and as a conservative, and respond with nothing but jealousy and bile. Well, bring it on. We have naught to fear from leeches of the print media.

There is a real dislike of the USA in Canada. As someone that loved Canada and lived there, it was the reaction of 9/11, a form of glee by Canadians that had me kick their dust from my sandals and never looked or went back. This is a country that lives in the shadow of the USA and resents the greatness of our people, yet has no problems benefiting financially from the association.

The French Canadians simply despise the USA, and are so liberal that they are out of touch with reality completely.

Anyway, in this case, as in many others, I think you’re wrong. Whether or not Bush’s record and Presidency deserves to be scorned on some type of objective measure, the truth is that I for one, and many people here and on the right, are generally very grateful to Pres. Bush, and consider him much more right than wrong. This may not be your opinion, or even a majority opinion, but it is very likely the opinion here. Nobody is running primarily from Bush or from the issues here. If McCain said he’d be sorta like Bush, I’d be happy to hear that.

If you read some of Mallick’s other pieces, you can get the gist of this woman. She is completely bigoted and hate filled along with the occasional hypocritical stance that she can’t stand bigotry. A swooning admirer of Obama, she writes as if her opinion matters in a nation in which she is not a citizen and that she constantly derides and claims is broken in every possible way due to the filthy rich Republicans and the imbecilic Americans that support them due to their inability to read or even comprehend any matters of importance. The number of perjoratives that she puts out per paragraph is really amazing. I’m so surprised that bigoted hatemongers of this caliber have escaped persecution this long. But of course, hatred of her nature (men, Republicans, Americans, religious, conservative women, etc.) is probably encouraged.

Its really quite enlightening to see how stupid some people (Heather Mallick) really are.

sven10077 on September 9, 2008 at 10:14 AM

I just heard that tired old line again, “Do you want Sarah Palin in your vagina?!?” from some far left wing nutjob. My response? Yes.

Do you want your government in your workplace telling you that you can’t shoot your boss because he is not letting you advance your career? Umm, yes, because the primary role of the government is to protect its citizens. Well, then the argument returns to when does the life begin that we need to protect? Many conservatives believe/think it begins at conception, while the left/liberals seem to think its at some nebulous period or trimester, or in the case of the Democratic nominee, when the mother decides she wants it (unsuccessful abortions = throw baby in the trash to die). Do people really believe that it should be up to a mother (reproductive rights, pro-choice, what have you) to decide if she can kill the child or not? Why does anyone get upset when the Susan Smith’s of the world kill their offspring then?

The idea of pro-choice is a fine stance as long as you can detach yourself from the notion that what is being aborted is a life.

There’s something so entertaining about watching the Left collapse into full-blown, babbling hysteria. The mask of compassion and erudition falls away, and you see the tantrum-throwing, ranting, hate-filled child beneath that is the true face of modern Leftism.

I can see that my popcorn supply is going to be dangerously challenged over the next eight weeks.

Drywall:

Bush approval rating: ~30%
McCain voted with Bush 90% – you still haven’t proven that.

Congress approval rating ~10-15%
Obama voted with Congress 99% of the time – easily proved.

fossten on September 9, 2008 at 10:48 AM

This editorial is rancid. Corrupt with hatred, misunderstanding, and ignorance. It is full of misogyny, discrimination, and prejudice. There is nothing humorous or mature about Mallick’s statements, nor anything insightful – except the unwanted insight into a shriveled, prejudicial, and moronic mind.

Heather Mallick is an embarrassment to women and even more so to Canadians.

Canada: please keep her to yourselves – she needs medication before she’s allowed in civil society again.

You’re so funny. You really can’t defend Bush, can you? You answer the question with a question. You’ve proved my point. Thanks.

Dave Rywall on September 9, 2008 at 10:09 AM

Hey sweetheart, why not have a go at it with me? I promise you that I won’t defend Bush because I don’t like him, I won’t defend McCain because I find him a tolerable hero at best.

So how about it, Molsen/Piss guzzler?

With each post, you make yourself more and more of a Canadian Russell Brand – just some worthless chump from a foreign country that doesn’t have any right to any opinion about American Politics, but doesn’t realize it yet.

And by the way, Your country is worthless, you freaks should sell us the land for a penny per acre and move to Europe.

the white trash vote — Heather Mallick

Wouldn’t that be the equivalent of the N-word? Actually I hate “hate speech” laws because it leads to no free speech at all.

Maxx on September 9, 2008 at 11:06 AM

McCain = Bush?

The answer can be found in Rasmussen and Gallup.

If Palin is such a poor choice by McCain then the left should be singing ‘Happy Days’. Instead the left sounds like 15 inch torn woofers.

Limerick on September 9, 2008 at 11:06 AM

CBC is the Canadian main stream media, and is not any more representative of Canada than CBS or NBC News is of the U.S. Yawn is right.

Canada is one of the few American allies that has taken real casualties in Afghanistan, and is poised to elect a Conservative government in a few weeks. Get some perspective.

Happily, Heather’s catching return fire pretty good in the comments.

Brian on September 9, 2008 at 11:11 AM

One thing the Palin candidacy has done is expose the hypocrisy of the so-called “feminist” movement. It does not represent “women.” It represents a slice of the women’s population- a narrow ideological band of extreme liberals.

It was and is a joke.

And the hatred is breathtaking.

drjohn on September 9, 2008 at 11:12 AM

Canada is a great country and a great ally.

Ms. Mallick (charming essay) sounds like she’s got some issues. I hope for her sake she’s able to keep that hatred from really damaging her psychologically, but one can only expect so much. Maybe she’s trying so hard just to get the attention of the European press. Possible sense of inferiority? Hard to speculate.

I have to say it’s hard to imagine she’s traveled much outside Toronto, since most of the Canadians I’ve met seem a lot more like the Palins than they do Ms. Mallick. And I mean that as a compliment to Canada.

DrSteve on September 9, 2008 at 11:16 AM

You still lack the ability to defend Bush’s record. That’s the funniest thing of all.

Dave Rywall on September 9, 2008 at 10:16 AM

OK, I’ll bite……………… what’s so wrong with Bush’s record?

Seven Percent Solution on September 9, 2008 at 11:21 AM

And a lot of us out in flyover country can say a lot more than “Merci, beaucoup.” We learned our foreign language defending other nations all across the globe as we defended Ours. And we’ve had regular folks on foreign streets say “thank you” in dozens and dozens of other languages along the way.

coldwarrior on September 9, 2008 at 9:30 AM

baldilocks on September 9, 2008 at 11:24 AM

Canada is a great country and a great ally.

About as great as Mexico.

If Canada was so great, it would offer a little more assistance in controlling the amount of drugs that it allows to freely flow into our country, and the money that those drugs produce into its country.

Tell you what, we’ll stop calling your country out if you take Michael Moore off our hands.

leetpriest on September 9, 2008 at 11:25 AM

Come on, our fellow Canuks. File that complaint. You know you want to.

I would, but I’m not a citizen of Canuckistan. I think they’d laugh at me if I did file a complaint.

I R A Darth Aggie on September 9, 2008 at 11:27 AM

As a “journalist” (and in her case the term must be used very loosely) she is of course free to write her opinions. The objection that a lot of us Canadians have is that the drivel she is writing is being done on the taxpayer’s dime, for a taxpayer funded media outlet.

And Drywall…not every article or thread has to turn into another lame debate about “Bush’s record.” Standard liberal tactic, try to deflect and change the subject…it’d old.

Paradox Drive on September 9, 2008 at 11:27 AM

S on September 9, 2008 at 11:34 AM

As usual, by the time I get into work in this time zone, I am somewhere around the 190th comment…oh well. Here goes.

I read the piece by Ms. Mallick, not expecting much different…though she ratcheted up the hate a few nothches, that’s for sure.

But when you take a look at the comments on the CBC site…and there are hundreds…the criticism is deep and profound. While 1-2% support Ms. Mallick’s commentary, the vast majority are scathing in their criticism. And, if you check the “recommendations”, you will see high numbers of recommendations for the most critical comments.

She’s an anomaly within the culture…though not within the Toronto media set…and perhaps, ultimately, the CBC will be shamed into a response.

Blaise on September 9, 2008 at 11:35 AM

About as great as Mexico.

No slight to Mexico, but not even close. Canadians have stood and fallen next to their American cousins for generations.

I take your point about drug interdiction, but I was talking a bit more broadly.

DrSteve on September 9, 2008 at 11:35 AM

Western Canadians are basically like middle America. They are for the most part, pro American. It’s those Eastern idiots like this one that we hear from every once in a while that really colors our negative perception down here. They are not all aboot hating Americans.

hot-heir on September 9, 2008 at 11:36 AM

Maxx on September 9, 2008 at 11:06 AM

Absolutely agree! That said, if you are going to have them, then apply them evenly. Of course, that isn’t the purpose of ‘hate speech’ laws. They are not to prevent ‘hate’ speech. They are to shut down the arguments/truth because the left can’t win the arguments in a real debate. But you all know this.

Seven Percent Solution on September 9, 2008 at 11:21 AM

Will the Human Rights Commission now bankrupt the CBC in a similar manner, or will they expose themselves as nothing more than a partisan attack dog for the Left?

We’ll never know until a canadian files a complaint against her with a HRC. Would a canuck please step up?

Blake on September 9, 2008 at 11:40 AM

Drywall thinks Republicans are as stupid as Democrats, but as you have pointed out in your post, the 90% figure is misleading: most of congress has “voted with Bush” (whatever that technically means,) 90% of the time – including Obama.

How does she know that Republican men are sexual inadequates?

Interesting, since when has the president written legislation? He may suggest it, but the House has to craft it. Are not the majority at present Dem’s? If you are going to make these rash statements, please study our system first.

It would be very interesting to see how many of her Canadian friends are former U.S. hippies who fled to Canada to avoid Vietnam-era military service (unlike a certain lying, pot smoking, draft dodging, womanizing, former Commander-in-Chief who fled to England.)

Sounds like she is getting an earful of poison from people who really hate the US… and Vietnam war heros like John McCain specifically.
