Great moments in media: Salon’s dominatrix/bestiality photoshop of Palin

For readers who want a one-stop, full-service descent into Palinphobia, Salon Magazine apparently has decided to address that market. Juan Cole compares Sarah Palin to Muslim terrorists for the audacity to be Christian — and that’s the rational argument coming from Salon’s pages today, comparatively speaking. Gary Kamiya provides the Chock Full o’ Nuts essay of the day, with a lovely photoshop showing the Governor of Alaska as a sexual deviant coming on to a moose.
You think I’m kidding? Here’s the pic:

What worries Kamiya so much? Her, ah, “doability”:
Republican strategists have made it clear that the GOP’s only chance to win is by reframing the election as a battle of images. And right now, Palin is the pinup queen in that war. She’s feisty, she’s a mom, she’s from a frontier state, she guns down wolves from the air, she’s a devout Evangelical, she poses as a reformer, and she insults the Washington elites.
And large numbers of Americans think she’s hot.
This latter point cannot be underestimated. Iraq may be a quagmire, a new cold war may be looming, the economy may be tanking and the world may be heading toward environmental doom, but the presidential race may be decided by the perceived doability of the governor of Alaska.
I’m tempted to ask Kamiya where he was when women were fainting at Barack Obama’s feet, but the mention of feet in the context in which Salon places Palin might generate another weird expression of fetishism.
I find this fortnight of reaction utterly fascinating. When challenged by a strong, self-made woman, what has the mainstream media done? They have painted her as:
- A hick
- A slut
- A bubble-headed beauty queen
- A bad mother
And when it became apparent that Palin had performed well and had positively impacted the race for Republicans, how did the little boys at Salon react? They photoshopped her as a dominatrix and pictured her toying with bestiality.
Paging Dr. Freud!
Some of us scoffed at the notion that Hillary Clinton got victimized by a sexist media. I’d say that the profession is doing its level best to cinch that reputation with its unhinged attacks on Palin. In the end, though, this is much more about them than it is about Palin, and it’s pretty disturbing.

I agree, this is highly disturbing. In one way I suppose its good though since it will help McCain/Palin to win and even if they lose it will be another serious blow to whatever credibility the media has left.

Let’s step back for a moment, forget the rest of the Palinphobia we’ve experienced that makes us near-immune to this, and analyze that sentence.
Someone took the time to Photoshop the Governor of Alaska. As a dominatrix. Coming onto a moose. This is a whole new level of crazy.
amerpundit on September 9, 2008 at 6:10 PM
I guess the Salon staff know all about S&M. My only encounter with it was a drill sgt in basic. I don’t suppose the Salon staff know about that. I do know something about whips. My momma used to whip me with a willow branch when I misbehaved. I even had to go get the branch. By the way, the thing in the photoshopped hand is a crop, not a whip. I do know that difference.

For the lawyers in the crowd: Are reporters now creating a sexually hostile environment in many of these news organizations? Everyone sees it’s blatant and aggressive sexism and misogyny now.
I think this needs to be the next level of debate. A few multi-million dollar discrimination lawsuits might answer the question.

Texas Rainmaker on September 9, 2008 at 6:13 PM
Photoshopped images of Sarah Palin are nowhere near as disturbing as unretouched photos of Obama with William Ayers… Jeremiah Wright… Tony Rezko… in Somali clothing, etc.
As Ronald Reagan once said, “If the Democrats would stop telling lies about me, I’d stop telling the truth about them.”
VastRightWingConspirator on September 9, 2008 at 6:13 PM
One has to wonder that all these slimeball attacks by the Democrats against Palin are aimed at keeping the Democratic base from wandering over to the McCain/Palin ticket.
These attacks cannot change Republicans votes and probably does not sit too well with Independents who are against negative campaigning. So the internal polling must show Democrats are thinking of not voting Obama/Biden and the Dems need to keep them from straying.

Palin doesn’t work for Slate therefore there’s no law suit for a hostile environment. If this was an employee then you’d have a claim but since its a conservative woman and and office filled with a bunch of liberal women I doubt they’d be willing to bring such a law suit.

Sigmund on September 9, 2008 at 6:17 PM
Supposedly Obama himself, today in Virginia (I guess – I don’t follow him around) used the line: “You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig!”
Not very subtle. The crowd didn’t think so either. They cheered wildly, I read.
I’m actually a little surprised he would go there. To my knowledge, no one in the McCain camp has said anything remotely approaching that level of gutter politics. I guess this is the “change” his followers can believe in.

The insanity that is so rampant in the media now must be addressed in some way. Failure to inhibit the irrationality will only get worse as attacks will evolve to inciting actions when the apex of the insanity is pushed past comprehension levels. We cannot let a pack of crazed dogs tear Sarah apart for no reason. The evil of the left is out of control. Basically we are in deep crap.

Are you serious? Don’t the DUmmies understand how incendiary that is, if it actually came from Obastard’s mouth? Calling a woman a pig? If I were a moonbat, I would be begging everyone to keep it under wraps. If I were Allah, I would find that audio or video and post it at the top of HotAir. Is it just me? Cap Pig,
Interesting. We’ll have to see or hear actual recordings to tell how oblique the remark was. If he made it juxtaposed to a comment about Palin, this could be a real problem for Obama, if publicized. Imagine women voters, hearing Barack “You’re nice enough, Hillary” Obama, say a pig with lipstick is still a pig, right in the middle of dissing Palin. We all remember Palin’s joke about hockey moms, pit bulls and lipstick. Hell hath no fury…
George Orwell on September 9, 2008 at 6:39 PM
It’ll be ignored by the media, and even if somebody does call him on it, he’ll say it was “misinterpreted” — the same way he did when he flipped Hillary the bird in that speech he gave during the primaries.

Yeah, Obama, you’re a real “change” agent. A machine politician from Chicago who votes the Democratic party line 97% of the time. A freshman Senator who has requested nearly a Billion dollars in earmarks to line the pockets of your corrupt supporters back in Chicago. That’s the kind of “reform” record we voters are looking for.
We know who the pig in this race is, Obama. We can smell you coming from a mile away.
AZCoyote on September 9, 2008 at 6:47 PM
The latest unsourced rumor is that Salon editors have an equal time photoshop for a different election piece on the way. Obama will be darkened up in blackface with a big afro, wearing a pink tutu and high heels. He’s depicted crying as Palin slams a 360 dunk in his face while dressed as a Nazi pig.
They feel this should assure readers that they are indeed being fair and balanced in their portrayals of the various candidates.

Yes, Obama was giving a speech and made a snide remark about Hillary, then raised his middle finger and slid it along the side of his face. The crowd, who knew exactly what he was doing, roared with laughter as Obama smirked. He later claimed that he was just scratching his face.

I never said that. But I would say
book burning = book burning = book burning
People may disagree with books about stem cell research, homosexuality, evolution, or abortion. But banning books is never the answer. Again, if ‘book banning’ is an unfounded rumor about Palin, then this is non-issue. I agree that not everything said about her has been fair and some of it has been sexist.
bayam on September 9, 2008 at 7:02 PM
Factcheck.org. Might just go ahead and make that your homepage.
They made a whole page to clean up the lies the libs are throwing.
Spirit of 1776 on September 9, 2008 at 7:02 PM
Okay. Well, this is just a twisted attack point. She didn’t burn books. She didn’t ban books. She did ask about taking some books of the shelf, which incidentally, I have no problem with. If a library keeps certain books of a more adult or violent nature, accessible, but not on the shelf, I’ve no problem with that.
Spirit of 1776 on September 9, 2008 at 7:04 PM
Interesting. So Palin floated the idea of banning books as a hypothetical. I can see why some people would interpret this to mean that she didn’t have a serious problem with such action herself. It suggests that Palin didn’t strongly disagree with the idea when presented in the town council. Otherwise, why would the topic have been raised with the library? Or does someone think that the librarian has completely fabricated the conversation?
bayam on September 9, 2008 at 7:07 PM
That Salon author probably once has fantasies of being dominated by fat moose Michael Moore. He made a political contribution to MoveOn.org during the 2004 election cycle.
Better luck next time, Gary.
Sergeant Tim on September 9, 2008 at 7:07 PM
Ha ha, yes I agree there’s a lot of nonsense out there being fanned by the left. Although I’m not quite ready to say that it’s all baseless, or in the same category as McCain’s illegitimate child rumors of the 2000 election.
Now that’s a very good point- moving books off the shelf is different than banning books. But I didn’t see the language ‘remove from the shelf’ in the transcript of Palin’s original conversation. And I don’t know if hiding books away, out of public eye, is anything more than a ruse that has nearly the same effect as banning. It would be interesting to know what a librarian thinks about the book removal tactic.
