Does anyone else think “sandbag”?

Critics of Sarah Palin have accused the John McCain campaign of keeping his running mate in a “cone of silence” for not having her hit the Sunday-morning talk shows immediately after the convention. The McCain campaign played coy, only stating that McCain and Palin would conduct interviews at the times and conditions of their choice. That set off howls of outrage, claiming it to be a verification that Palin couldn’t handle media scrutiny.
It seems that Team McCain may have been sandbagging:
But it turns out that she is spending much of Thursday and Friday with Gibson — at the ceremony in Fairbanks, Alaska, and at her home in Wasilla, Alaska.
Campaign aides said the anchorman will get extensive, repeated access to Palin throughout her first trip home since becoming the nominee.
“ABC News will have plenty of time to question her and examine her and spend time with her,” a campaign official said. “They’ll do multiple interviews over two days. No topics are off-limits – there are no ground rules. There’s tons of time to talk to her about every topic.”
The remarkable rollout reflects new confidence in Palin by her handlers, who initially had suggested it would be a while before she did interviews. Now, there will be several.
Sandbagging is a term used in bowling (and golf, I believe) where a participant deliberately underperforms at first to get a better handicap for the rest of the season. This seems applicable to the McCain approach to Palin, a strategy practically handed to them by the media and Democrats. They spent so much time and effort throwing mud at Palin in the first few days that they drastically lowered expectations for her acceptance speech — and she dazzled America with it.
The campaign did the same thing with press scrutiny in the general election. They waited for a few days, and then they arranged to put Palin in one of the most difficult positions for any candidate — two days in an uncontrolled environment with a network news agency. They get two days in the life of Sarah Palin to do with as they will.
That doesn’t sound like Team McCain has a confidence problem with their new running mate. It sounds like they think she’ll hit home runs, even in a difficult environment. If McCain and his team worried about Palin, they would have cocooned her in 15-minute interview slots in little conference rooms, with handlers at her side. Instead, they’ve allowed ABC and Charles Gibson unfettered access over two days, with no limitations on topics or venues.
Why ABC, and why such intimate access? The Republicans want to expand Palin’s appeal beyond the conservative base that has been energized with her selection. They think her intelligence, wit, and energy can attract voters in the center as well as with women who may still be skeptical of Palin. ABC has provided the most balanced coverage of the alphabet networks this cycle, and they can hope that Gibson won’t come in with an Olbermann-like agenda. (Brokaw wouldn’t have been a bad choice, but there was no way Team McCain was going to give NBC any scoops while they still employ Keith Olbermann.) It guarantees a wide dissemination of whatever results from the interview, and gives Palin a chance to make a pitch to a much wider swath of the electorate.
That doesn’t sound like a campaign afraid of its running mate. It sounds like a campaign that has a champion, and wants to force the media to lower expectations once again to gain maximum impact.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on September 9, 2008 at 10:06 AM
Absolutely.
Two weeks ago, I watched Meet The Press. They had a discussion on Palin in the second half, and one of the panelists–a CNBC reporter who’d been to Alaska and had spent time with Palin–had a pretty obvious woman-crush on her.
This is a complete setup. Two days with the ‘Cuda in her element and she’ll have Charlie Gibson eating right out of her hand.
Typhoon on September 9, 2008 at 10:06 AM
Of course they want her in five-minute segments. They want to move quickly, fish for botched lines they can pass off as gaffes, and move forward. Even if they’re disproved, it’s all about their initial reaction. One of my coworkers, an intelligent woman, just yesterday said she didn’t like Palin because she “actually asked what a VP does.” Of course, I asked her if she had seen her saying that or just read a quote. Of course, it was the latter.
AllahP was right. She can’t afford anything that even sounds like a gaffe, because the timeframe is now so short that there isn’t enough time to counter them with the truth.

She is going to do great, and McCain played this out in terrific style.
Even gaffes are not going to be a serious problem. She is reaching ‘immune from media criticism’ status.
Spirit of 1776 on September 9, 2008 at 10:07 AM
Having worked as a groom, the more fitting analogy is “holding back”. That’s when you have the jockey keep the horse back in each race to run up the odds, and then pick the time and place to let them really run their race.
I don’t know if that;s the case here, but she has done so well up to now it makes sense to let the sparkle shine until you need to let her run ‘her’ race again.
Hening on September 9, 2008 at 10:08 AM

Exciting stuff. I have immense confidence in Palin, and my comfort level with Gibson (or Brokaw) is about as good as it can get, given the intensity of media bias.
Kudos to Team McCain for giving her the exposure. Sure, there’s risk in it, but a risk well worth taking.

This is what I’ve been screaming for with regards to foreign aid. You talk/act ugly to the people giving the handouts, you don’t get squat–your competitors do. Seems like M/P are behaving like adults and the children are learning on which side their bread is buttered. Schweet. Schweeter: the recipient of the handout gets good ratings from grateful viewers. Everyone wins.

Look for Sarah Palin to become even more of a national phenomenon than she already is. ABC and Gibson will be left in shambles in her wake. This interview will cement her into the national consciousness and she and McCain will flip all the battleground states.

ABC has done a really good job in this campaign. Jake Tapper was the first major network reporter and blogger to start calling BS on Obama. It’s still a liberal network, but has been much nicer to Republicans than CBS or NBC.
Remember also that it was Stephanopolous who asked Obama about William Ayers in the Philadelphia debate, which caused a near meltdown on the Left and caused Obama to refuse any more debates with Hillary.

The Dems and the MSM (but I repeat myself) will keep hammering Sarah and will keep lowering expectations. It’s what they do. They can’t help themselves. It’s the only play in their playbook. “Bush is a dummy.” “Bush Sr. is a dummy.” “Reagan is a dummy.”
Meanwhile, they give Sarah another chance to do what she does best: stand tall at the plate and hit pitch after pitch out of the park.

The McCain campaign is doing exactly the right thing. That cesspool called the mainstream media should be shunned and only the most credible and fair professional journalists should be allowed exclusive access. I’m not the biggest fan of ABC but I must admit that Gibson is among the most credible in the field.

I seem to remember John Kerry went months without an interview or press conference during the ‘04 election – especially after the Swift Boat Vets finally broke through the media blackout.
And Kerry was, of course, the challenger in that race against an incumbent president. I don’t recall the MSM complaining much at the time, at least not publicly.

My Grandfather always taught me never play the other man’s game, and never play on his field.
How smart of the RNC, give access to ABC (after exposing all the worst that the MSM has to offer), and keeping the access in Alaska; where Palin is most comfortable.
I smell a home run…
Greta will be next or near next. She has done a good job chronicling Palin in Alaska.
right2bright on September 9, 2008 at 10:14 AM
This choice was a very interesting insight into how weak McCain’s camp now thinks the MSM is, and how much they chose to rely on the alternative right wing media to be able to get out an alternate message in a very short span of time. This is the first time in my life that I have seen this. In this 2008 Pres. election between Republican and the Media, the media may get mortally wounded.
JiangxiDad on September 9, 2008 at 10:14 AM
Well…if your coworker is so intelligent, perhaps you might ask her to answer the question.
Because other than preside over the Senate and vote in case of a tie, the Vice President has no constitutionally defined duties.
So what it boils down to is that all VP’s work whatever portfolio the President gives them to work. So, that was a perfectly legitimate question for her to ask McCain; and seems to me to display a lot better understanding of how our government works than that displayed by your intelligent coworker.
Typhoon on September 9, 2008 at 10:15 AM
I fully expect a “gotcha” hit on Palin.
There is no way in hell that Team ChicagObama is NOT in full blow conference mode with ABC.
This is surely a calculated risk By Team McPalin. I think the strategy here is to endear her to the American public to such a degree, that the “gotcha’s” will reveal the media for the Obama-lackey’s that they are.
It’s risky- BUT- given the current climate of public backlash towards the blatantly biased media- it could very well work.
We shall see……
FiveWays on September 9, 2008 at 10:15 AM
Palinmania is so intense right now. Where is Biden? Did Biden ever get even 1% of this attention, which so far is even more favorable than her 85% approval rating as gov of Alaska? Right now her image is sparkling, and every movement of hers, every phrase, every word, every letter will be parsed and judged. When you’re killing the other side, why NOT sit back for a few days. If she could appear on TV 1x a week for the next 2 months and maintain her present image, why not? If she could swing that (which she won’t try to do, but if she did) McCain would very likely win on Nov 4.

Absolutely. Both McCain and Palin must insist on being able to show when their words are taken out of context, or it’ll happen.
That quote about not knowing what a VP does is an excellent example. If you take just the right fragment, you make her look stupid. If you take it in context, it shows a keen awareness of the fact that 99.44% of what a VP does is determined by the President’s willingness to delegate responsibilities, and every President has a diffferent comfort level for doing so.

jocrazy0 on September 9, 2008 at 10:44 AM
Sure it can.
Let the themes play out. While I agree we don’t need any personality cults of our own, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with suckering Barry into running against Palin.
Nothing.
It gets him off his game, and makes McCain look above it all and presidential by comparison. And while Barry can waste his time flailing against sarah today and tomorrow and next week if he wants to, eventually he’s going to have to debate McCain.
There’s no question who’s at the top of the ticket, and to me it speaks volumes for Mccain that he has no qualms about and seems to revel in Sarah’s success.
If Barry were the confident in himself, we’d probably be looking at McCain/Pawlenty vs. Obama/Clinton.
