Biden: If “Republicans” care so much about kids with birth defects, why not support stem-cell research?

posted at 3:27 pm on September 9, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

No particular Republican is named but it’s no mystery whom this is aimed at.

Was Joe Biden referring to Sarah Palin, a mother of a child with Down syndrome, when he made this comment?

“I hear all this talk about how the Republicans are going to work in dealing with parents who have both the joy, because there’s joy to it as well, the joy and the difficulty of raising a child who has a developmental disability, who were born with a birth defect. Well guess what folks? If you care about it, why don’t you support stem cell research?”

Biden received a thunderous ovation when he made the remark at a town hall style meeting this morning in Columbia.

Team Maverick’s sending around a reminder of what The One said about the families of candidates being “off limits” and offers the obligatory outrage:

Barack Obama’s running mate sunk to a new low today launching an offensive debate over who cares more about special needs children. Playing politics with this issue is disturbing and indicative of a desperate campaign. — Ben Porritt, McCain-Palin Spokesman

Eh, he’s not going after Trig, he’s going after Palin for a position she’s taken on a specific policy issue. Compare and contrast with the media’s descent on Bristol Palin last week, which had nothing to do with policy — Palin’s stance on abstinence education was a fig leaf they reached for afterwards — and everything to do with proving that Palin’s a bad mom. I’m with Ambinder on this one, though: It’s worse than a crime, it’s a mistake. For one thing, in true Biden fashion, it’s clumsily phrased. Presumably he means embryonic stem-cell research, not stem-cell research generally; putting it the way he did leaves McCain open to remind centrists that he supports ESCR and Palin open to tout alternatives to the embryonic approach to take control of the issue. For another thing, even partisans as unhinged as Sullivan have felt obliged to praise her for her commitment to life in carrying Trig to term knowing his condition. It’s one of the strongest testaments to her character in her biography. All this does is push that fact back in front of voters. But beyond that, his question is simply stupid and easily answered: She doesn’t support ESCR because she believes in life at conception and isn’t willing to sacrifice it even to help her own son. Unlike Joe Biden, of course, who also claims to believe in life at conception and yet seems willing to sacrifice it at every opportunity.

Exit question: How happy do you think the infanticide candidate is to have this issue suddenly back on the table?

We do support stem cell research, Joe Gasbag. We just don’t support the type you prefer, which means a child dies by abortion to perpetuate research using embryonic stem cells that has had very little success at best. We support the use of other sources of stem cells that have proven to be successful.

But you’d prefer to set aside your Catholic beliefs for the convenience of voting for the deaths of unborn children. You f.,..ng moron.

Somebody check with the bookies, did Biden place a large wager on McCain winning when the Messiah was at his apex? I swear they’re trying to lose and I’m inclined to let them.

So many lies tucked into such a short statement.

1) Republicans do support stem cell research.
1a) Bush restricted federal money for fetal stem cells. There are no restrictions on state or private money.
1b) There are no restrictions on adult stem cells.
1c) The federal restrictions on fetal stem cells only applies to new lines, lines that existed prior to this decision are unlimited.

2) All, and I do mean all, of the progress that has been made with stem cells, have come from adult, not fetal stem cells.

Not at all. Especially given that non-embryonic stem cell research is showing promise.

And I don’t think stem cell research would help Trig and others like him, as their blueprints are different from the rest of us. I would seriously doubt that science could genetically engineer away the extra chromosome.

You can be pro-life and for stem cell research…..adult stem cell research, that is. Adult stem cell research is much more promising and doesn’t come with all the ethical stickiness of embryonic stem cells. Case in point from MediNews Direct.

September 9, 2008

Scientists at the Harvard University, Massachusetts, US, have achieved a revolutionary goal in regenerative medicine, by transforming pancreatic cells from adult mice into insulin-producing β-cells without reversion to the pluripotent stem cell phase. The technique, called “direct reprogramming‘, marks a significant step towards the development of novel treatment strategies for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Surely someone with Biden’s IQ can grasp the difference, especially when new technology means destroying an embryo is unnecessary.

When the left speaks of stem cell research, they speak only of EMBRYONIC stem cell research, as if it’s the only kind there is, despite the reality that it’s the ONLY kind that has never actually produced results.

Give it up, Biden. We do support stem cell research, just not that which requires experimentation on the remains of the innocent and helpless murdered to enable it ala infamous Nazi war criminal Joseph Mengele.

The Anti-Life left isn’t fooling anyone but themselves with their faux morality over embryonic stem cell research as a way to sanctify abortion.

wildcat84 on September 9, 2008 at 3:43 PM

I am really sick and tired of Democrats mis construing the position of Republicans. No one is against stem cell research. The Republicans aren’t even against embryonic stem cell research. In fact, Bush isn’t even always against federally funded embryonic stem cell research. He has no problem with federally funded embryonic stem cell research on embryos that were already going to be discarded. What Bush, and many Republicans, are against is federally funded embryonic stem cell research in which embryos are created specifically to be destroyed. Furthermore, Bush was proven right that if you demand that science look for alternatives to morally questionable practices, that you can innovate so that moral dilemmas relieved when alternatives were discovered to embryonic stem cell research.

I suppose that human cloning hold all sorts of scientific possibilities as well, but that doesn’t mean that we should allow federal funds for the practice.

mike volpe on September 9, 2008 at 3:43 PM

Eh, he’s not going after Trig, he’s going after Palin for a position she’s taken on a specific policy issue.

Of course he’s “going after” Palin, but he’s USING Trig to do it. That was the same with the Bristol thing. It wasn’t about attacking her, it was about attacking the Governor herself.

But here’s the bigger point. Obama said families are off limits, and on the Bristol rumors he said he’d fire anyone in his campaign if they were involved in spreading those rumors. Am I the only one who thinks he should apply that standard here and give Biden the boot? Attacking an opponent using her pregnant teen is obviously bad… but how much worse is it to use her special needs infant son?!

As always, I must note that embryonic stem cell research has shown no promise, while adult stem cell research has shown great promise, which leaves one wondering about the motives of hte leftists who push so hard for the embryonic variety.

wise_man on September 9, 2008 at 3:43 PM

In babies with Down syndrome, the individuals have an extra pair (whole or part) of chromosome 21. It’s a genetic defects in all the cells in the body. I don’t think simply using stem cells can provide the solution since it’s not something missing you can add back, rather it’s something extra in all cells. How can you eliminate an extra set of chromosome in all the cells in the body.

But only the kind that actually produces results, such as adult stem cells and umbilical cord blood, and not the kind that CREATES what you agree are living human beings just to destroy them in research, while we will allow in limited circumstances to use those existing embryos which are already destined for destruction.

But that’s too much nuance for Joe Genius to 1-understand, or 2-make into a soundbite.

Now what should we do with the stem cells that have developed into babies that are capable of living outside the mother, that are currently living outside the womb, that are so healthy they survived a botched abortion, yet mommy wants them dead? If you care so much about kids, what do you want to do with them? Do you agree with your boss that we should leave them in a utility closet to die? ANSWER THE QUESTION, JOE GENIUS.

Stem cell research is primarily directed at chronic diseases in older individuals.

Stem cell research has absolutely NOTHING to do with Down’s syndrome. I am a geneticist and there is no way any conceivable stem cell can replace all the trisomic cells in a Down’s individual.

Stem cell research is primarily directed at chronic diseases in older individuals.

Quiet, you Neocon Geneticist. Obama/Biden are both lawyers. Therefore they are smarterer than you and know all about how chromosomal defects can totes be fixed with a magic wand or with the mere touch of Obama’s hand.

Stop confusing them or distracting them with facts…
