Obama: You know, tax hikes in a recession may be a bad idea

Barack Obama retreated on another key policy yesterday, and this one has repercussions for his entire economic and spending plan. Obama acknowledged in an interview on ABC that rescinding the Bush tax cuts in a recession — as he has described the economy — would be destructive. If so, Obama just eliminated a significant amount of the funding for his hundreds of billions in new government spending:
Democrat Barack Obama says he would delay rescinding President Bush’s tax cuts on wealthy Americans if he becomes the next president and the economy is in a recession, suggesting such an increase would further hurt the economy.
Nevertheless, Obama has no plans to extend the Bush tax cuts beyond their expiration date, as Republican John McCain advocates. Instead, Obama wants to push for his promised tax cuts for the middle class, he said in a broadcast interview aired Sunday.
“Even if we’re still in a recession, I’m going to go through with my tax cuts,” Obama said. “That’s my priority.”
Obama has proposed almost $300 billion in new spending in his presidential campaign. If he can’t raise taxes, at least in his calculation, all of that becomes deficit spending. He wants to accuse McCain of fiscal irresponsibility for supporting the extension of the Bush tax cuts, but his spending plans now have no revenue. How exactly does that express responsibility?
Not only that, but Obama has essentially conceded the Republican argument on those extensions. Obama says he’ll use his middle-class tax cut as a balance, but overall Obama will raise taxes on corporations and employers, all of which will indirectly hit middle-class buying power. It will also result in lower revenues overall as the dynamic effect of these tax increases will curb economic growth, resulting in lower profits and less tax revenue — a point Obama makes himself in this statement.
Obama has campaigned successfully on economics mostly through populist rhetoric and class warfare. He has cast the Bush cuts as egregious without explaining the five years of solid growth they produced. Now that he has to start getting past the slogans and start producing specifics, he seems lost and self-contradictory. Small wonder that McCain has closed the gap on economic stewardship from 19 points to three in the latest polling. Voters have begun to realize that Obama is making it up as he goes along.

This is what happens when someone gets promoted too soon. He really appears to be out-of-his-league at this point; likely he wouldn’t have been in 2012. I’ll bet the Democratic leadership is really pissed at Hillary’s campaign planners.

In all seriousness though, the next administration is inheriting the mother of all ticking time bombs. But I believe someone like Palin as VP would have an obvious mandate and could then explain how the Maverick team was put in place for exactly that reason and it will be tough and messy for a time as they try to defuse it.
Say something like:
“Give the Dems 12 more years of tax insanity, corrupt Congressional pork and puffery, or give me 12 years of Palin Power and I will have America back on the path to genuine hard-earned wealth from the sweat of our brow and not fake inflated government-made paper wealth.”

Well, one things for sure…it’s pretty clear Obama has never been under serious pressure before, and no it’s abundantly evident that he has real trouble handling it.
We’re all jesting and having fun, but seriously, this guy looks like a bully/big-man-on-campus type in an Afterschool Special that just got owned at the school prom or something.
If I were the Dems, I wouldn’t even worry so much about Palin the Tiger or Hockey Moms, I’d be worried about how my candidate looks like he’s looking for the exit!

Let’s see, where are we on the Obama decision front, I am sure I haven’t covered all the bad ideas Obama has had. Limited time and space, you know.
OK, taking people’s guns after the SC rules the Second Amendment means what it says, may be a bad idea, not going to do it, unless he has the votes in Congress. There is always a ‘but’.
Then we have voting against the surge, bad idea. Hey who knew it was going to be so wildly successful, well, maybe John McCain did, maybe Bush did. Ouch!!
Against offshore drilling, bad idea. Now wants some offshore drilling, and huge windfall taxes on oil companies — a really bad idea.
Ethanol, voted for it, now it’s clear to all but Obama it was a really bad idea to burn food.
Saying you are against FISA update and then voting for it, bad idea, maybe good idea, err, uhh, ummm — oh well, let’s move on
Talking with dictators, without preconditions, bad idea, never said that. Hopes you forgot.
Partitioning Jerusalem, well let’s just skip that mess as well.
Cutting the US military, drastically, is a bad idea, Unilateral disarmament, oops Russia shows up, bad idea — Hey wait, I never said that, Obama wants drastic cuts, still.
…. and now raising taxes IN A RECESSION, bad idea.
Where does Obama get his ideas that turn out to be so screwy bad?
I come down to this, voting for Obama is a really bad idea.

While we’re off-topic with hurricanes, there was a report on Great Van Susteren’s show the other night that a few days before Hurricane Gustav hit Louisiana, Gov. Palin called Gov. Jindal and offered to send Alaska National Guard troops to Louisiana to help with rescue efforts, which Gov. Jindal accepted. This was confirmed by the commander of the Alaska National Guard.
Not stuck on stupid, but getting it done. I wouldn’t be surprised if Gov. Palin did the same thing again for Hurricane Ike.

Now Obama says we should cut taxes during a recession, the surge worked, we should not immediately withdrawal from Iraq, and we should add troops to Afghanistan. Plus, he voted for the FISA bill and Biden says life begins at conception.
If those two keep changing their minds, next thing we’ll hear is they are now planning to vote for McCain-Palin on Election Day.

OK, the two biggest problems our economy has is the House Loan problem, and the Energy economy.
Lets see… Fannie May and Freddie Mac were both set up and restructured by Dem controlled Congress. Oversite of these institutions is done by the Federal Reserve Bank, and they follow rules set up by the Fed Res Board. Oversite of the Fed is supposed to be done by Congress. Both Fannie and Freddie have now been taken over by the Fed Government, and the bail out “could” cost Hundreds of billions of dollars…
So, Congress created institutions, did not provide oversite, and they have now failed.
Energy Policy… We now produce only 40% as much oil in the US as we did in 1970… why? Congress passed environmental laws making it very tough to get anything done, and will not allow drilling on huge chunks of Federal Land.
Obama is already a member of the SENATE, and is in the position to lead on these issues… but has not done anything… so now he wants a Promotion?
Of course, in fairness, McCain has been in Congress for a LLONNNNGGGGG time… and has been part of the problem as well.

He’s lying. His base knows this as well as his backers.
Bill Clinton promised ‘middle-class’ tax cuts when he first ran for President. When they failed to materialize, he said that things had changed in the few months he’d been in office.
Obama will do what every mainstream Democrat has wanted or tried to do for decades. Increase federal spending, increase taxes on everyone to pay for it, and try to deconstruct traditional infrastructure and replace it with European style morality and governance.
The reason these campaigns tend to end up being personality contests is that the issues Democrats support are anathema to average Americans. And it’s why it’s ’swiftboating’ to point out associations, statements and positions when you talk about Democrats and ‘vetting’ when you go after the 17-year old daughter of the Republican candidate.

This is the telltale heart to me. If he actually believes what he said, then he is in full agreement with Bush/McCain on the tax cuts. But he is also hinting that he agrees with Clinton on his “economy is roaring – let’s raise taxes by $100 billion a year!” philosophy.
Liberals don’t get it. They still talking about Clinton’s “budget surplus” as if there was ever such a thing, not understanding that his tax increase torpedoed it. It was an illusion. I guess they’re stupid.

Here’s the real problem kids:
We live in a functional democracy. We were supposed to live in a constitutional republic. Basic economical principles are not taught except in home schools. Government education is a fraud and a national shame.
Any changes that would allow the American economy to steel itself against the consequences of 80-90 years of economic insanity could all go away with a 50%+ 1 vote in Congress and one Presidential signature or one Supreme Court justice getting up on the wrong side of the bed. And poof! Everything changes just like that!
Freddie and Fanny, Bear/Stearns, et al are the canaries in the coal mine.
Social Security and Medicare are unfunded by tens of trillions of dollars. Not underfunded, but unfunded.
We have Dems (and some Repubs, witness the “Gang of Now 16″) who are flaming idiots when it comes to oil and energy-again, bitter fruit from the tree of a functional democracy.
We have received many warnings. It appears that Congress, with permission of the people who elect them, are tossing a live grenade from one Congress to another hoping that it explodes on the others’ watch.
The harvest of what we’ve sown is nearly at hand. We have a few precious years to get this squared away. No more than a decade. After that the pin has been pulled and the spoon released on the grenade.
Again, we’ve been warned.

Moving to the center a little early, isn’t he?
How can he call the last eight years an economic disaster, as the Bush tax cuts work? He wouldn’t prevaricate simply to win an election, would he? Oh my!
A little history lesson would be helpful. The economic boom ‘overseen’ by President Clinton’s administration had nothing to do with Clinton. A little thing called the personal computer, in conjunction with the explosion of the Internet, transformed the Global economy. President Bush came into office when the dot com bubble burst-the highs of the 1990s went back down, way down, but now have found their right level.
If Obama had been President for the past four years, he would be shouting our present economic numbers from the rooftops, as the economy has been strong, and will continue to be strong, unless the Democrats get in and tax us back to the stone age.

Obama seems like a nice enough guy to me. He seems smart and thoughtful and reasonably hip. He just is not presidential material.
I think he is a closet Black Panther that wants to punish wite success and promote black victimhood.
If he would talk straight on the black culture train wreck and the catastrophy the welfare state is, he could get more white votes. The “Hip Hop” culture is at the bottom of every measure if human intellectual achievement, and at the top of every list of failure from education to unwed mothers to prison populations to violence to income.
There must be a legitimate reason for these realities, but the MSM always blames it on racial descrimination. That concept will only get you so far. History is replete with instances where people that are descriminated against step up and excell. Telling truth to power is one thing, telling truth to people is something different.
We must stop the welfare state and Obama should take the lead if he expects to get elected by whites.

Whether John McCain’s lead over Barack Obama is 10 points, or 3 points, or somewhere in between doesn’t matter. Those numbers will shift and shift again over the next eight weeks.
What matters is the great divide that has been revealed, and whether or not the MSM tries to repair it or simply deepens it in the weeks ahead.
Will the MSM actually start covering Obama with the same level of scrutiny as has been applied to Sarah Palin these past ten days? Chicago Thugs, northern division, are swarming Alaska to try and smear Palin, while Obama’s MSM allies are pressing for a series of gotcha interviews to help in the process, so the full court effort by Obama’s media allies to destroy the Alaska governor will continue.
But still missing is a serious attempt by anyone sitting across from Obama to ask about his real views of and deep connections to Bill Ayers and the details of his years in close association with Jeremiah Wright and Tony Rezko. Wholly unexamined are Obama’s long ties to the deeply corrupt Cook County machine.
Still missing is any sustained questioning about the huge gaps in his understanding of how the world works and his planned meetings with Ahmadinejad, Chavez and Kim. Has he yet been briefed about the Russian veto on the Security Council? If Sarah Palin responded to the Georgian crisis as Obama did, she’d have been flayed for her unpreparedness. Obama got a pass. Yet he’s the one running for president, not vice-president.
Still missing is even cursory questioning about his vote against the Born Alive Infant Protection Act, his deceptive answers about his bipartisan achievements –of which he truly has none– and the details of his legislative record in Illinois or D.C., which are laughable. Team Obama bristled at the derision directed at his “community organizer” experience, which reflects unease at the prospect of anyone actually pressing Obama on his life experiences.

Obama’s “net” tax cut for the middle class is a windfall profit tax on employers. When employers get their tax bill, they will fire employees. When US businesses can’t make a profit due to higher taxes, they will get taken over by their foreign competitors. It’s a no-win situation.

It was formerly the left who praised the Americans’ fighting wars in which American interests were not at stake, and as far as I know, it’s still the left who talk about freeing Tibet and saving Darfur. Farm subsidies seem to be unpopular with everyone except farmers now, but I remember when left journalists and candidates were all about saving farmers. And I’m sure you know it’s a Democrat Congress that must approve any appropriations to “bail out” “Fannie Mae” and “Freddie Mac,” those two crusty old fossils from the Americans’ early welfare state.
However, since it’s the right, not the left, who are having children, it does seem you’re talking to the right people. The left’s children will not be producing very much spit.

Your take is the logical direction for these Liberal nutters; however, they must be looking at the huge lay-offs taking place in their own industry, and at least be thinking about the continued consequences for their total failure to do the job our government designed for them (free press). I know what they are saying and all of that, but I wonder what they are thinking in the privacy of their own homes. I had a client in Palos Verdes, Ca., who wrote for the LAT back some years ago. Rick007 on September 8, 2008 at 5:08 PM
Where’s a link to that story I saw earlier today or yesterday that Oprama very recently went to visit Shrillary, hat in hand, asking for help?
After they originally appeared to agree that she’d back down and not challenge his right to the nomination in exchange for him throwing millions of $$ her way to help settle her campaign debts, only to totally STIFF her…now, and ONLY NOW, does he visit her, hat in hand…GROVELING for help fighting off MAC and the Huntress?
Shrillary must be relishing this moment.
And she has ZERO incentive to truly help, and PLENTY of incentive to screw his campaign behind the scenes, after he stiffed her and provided nowhere near the dollars he promised, what POSSIBLE incentive does she have to really marshall any forces to help?
More likely, she deploys as much leverage as possible to destroy the guy so she gets another run in 2012. MUCH more likely.
I guess Oprah should have been more willing to liquidate some of that billion-plus she owns to help Shrillary settle her campaign debts. By having not opened the pocketbook to help Barry Hussein earlier…MUCH earlier…her personal Messiah is doomed.

I dunno, where I live I see single unwed mothers who share the same ethnicity as Barry’s Old Man, lugging along 3 or more kids at a clip. I really don’t think they are voting to the Right on Nov 4th. Then again, I don’t think they can find Election Day on a calendar anyway.

Well, if she is, she’s not showing it around my way. She was on Staten Island rallying support for Michael McMahon (D) to take Vito Fossella’s (R) seat in Congress. This is not good for us SI’ers. We have the only Red Seat in the 5 boros.

Took the same strategy about troops in Iraq too. Went from get them out, to well we’ll see, talk to the generals….

Paisan, ya gotta remember…and take this from a guy born in NYC but who moved down South as a young boy:
ANYTHING in NYC is a LOST CAUSE. I’m surprised you HAVE EVEN ONE red seat in the 5 boroughs.
BTW, whatever happened to Congressman King? Is he not there anymore?
Don’t get mad, Paisan. New Yawkers have this tencdency think NYC = the world. Ain’t so, buddy row.

All bets are off – Obama just praised Communist China again in his interview with O’Reilly.
He also basically said, “what’s the big deal” if you have to pay more taxes.
This guy’s dangerous.
dugan on September 8, 2008 at 8:13 PM
O’Reilly joking with Obama about his tax plan said he “didn’t mind living in a hut.” Not so veiled reference to Obama’s poor half brother George?

And somebody needs to bang Pelosi over the head with this fact. She now is softening on offshore drilling BUT Big Oil is not to have any tax breaks, according to her demented reasoning.
Another canard of the Left is that our country can ill afford tax breaks during a time of war. This is their convoluted way of exiting us from Iraq.
However, as radio commenter Jim Quinn said this morning, John Kennedy’s economic plan to decrease taxes was instituted posthumously and economically successfully…during the escalation of the VietNam War.
These Lefties cannot get their talking points straight.

Remember the movie “Say Anything“? When are the Dhimmis gonna wake up to this guy?

You know what else is a great movie to re-visit these days? “Deep Impact.” I just caught it on cable. The president is black, the heroic spaceship sent to stop the world-smashing comet is called “The Messiah,” and one of the main characters is an MSNBC reporter who is chosen to survive the end of the world because “everyone knows you, and people trust you.” That, my friends, is science fiction right there.

Keemo: All of your points are valid, to which I would add the disappearing funds for the failures of the Woods Foundation monies and those of all of the other education boondoggles in Chicago.
Obama’s game has been to play with OPM (other people’s money) while he ensconces himself in the role of righteous determiner of what is fair and just. He has never been accountable in any role that he has played.

Never fear a Nada Obama tax hike.
You won’t have to pay it.
You just won’t get your pay check.
