Michelle Obama on VP: “What you learn about Barack from his choice is that he’s not afraid of smart people”

posted at 7:23 pm on September 8, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

I’m sure she didn’t mean what it sounds like she meant. The crowd was, um, laughing at something else.

Obama then moved on to politics, where she first brought up her husband’s vice-presidential choice. “I think it was a really good pick—Senator Joe Biden,” she said, and later added, “People say they have amazing chemistry, and it’s true.”

Obama continued with talk about Biden when she said, “What you learn about Barack from his choice is that he’s not afraid of smart people.” The crowd softly chuckled.

How smart is Biden? Smart enough that he’s now taking credit for anticipating the path to victory in Iraq despite being the only candidate on either ticket who voted on the wrong side of the current conventional wisdom about the war and the surge. Exit question: Isn’t it more likely the crowd was laughing at the idea that Biden’s smart?

Update: More thinly veiled sarcasm from an Obama. “Mother, governor, moose-shooter… no, that’s cool. I mean that’s cool stuff!”

Update: I’ll give her this — she’s got better moves than The One. Although still not as smooth as NBC’s new election anchor.

Update: Bill Kristol thinks The One’s laughing at Biden too. Sort of.

So now Michelle Obama has to interpret for us what her husband’s actions mean? So who else can she channel? Keep speaking for him it looks like he needs to be explained.

Dr Evil on September 8, 2008 at 7:26 PM

So can we see Obama’s college transcripts already?

Wethal on September 8, 2008 at 7:26 PM

If Biden is so smart why did he have to plagiarizing someone else speech? Smart people tend to be able to do their own work.

No, he is just afraid of girls! Especially ones that shoot mooses, or would the plural of moose be meese?

This is ridiculous.

I seriously hope that 1) Someone calls the Obama camp on this, even better if they call Michelle Obama on this specifically; and 2) that they keep doing crap like this.

nailinmyeye on September 8, 2008 at 7:28 PM

Simply knowing that he believes Biden to be “smart”, says much about his judgement.

No one messes with Barracuda. My disdain for the Obamas has grown immensely. Michelle is a coward like her husband. Speaking one way in California and another way somewhere else.

I get it. Nuance, right?

Damiano on September 8, 2008 at 7:38 PM

With the Palin picture I thought Michelle was talking about how the O isn’t afraid of Palin because she’s a dumb hick, a ‘yokel’.
Biden is about as smart as what he flushed down the toilet this morning and just as stinky. But, according to the woman who knows: Biden and Barry have ‘great chemistry’. Ka-boom!

Christine on September 8, 2008 at 7:38 PM

Michelle would be good in Dawn of The Dead. She wouldn’t need additional makeup.

I mean geez, enough about Joe & Barry’s chemistry already! Joe’s on the cover of all the magazines, white men are turning to Barry in droves since his VP pick, guys that don’t even need hair plugs want them.

Joe is such a cultural phenomenon that I actually copied and pasted this comment from FR.

Michelle Obama on VP: “What you learn about Barack from his choice is that he’s not afraid of smart people”

I’m sure she didn’t mean what it sounds like she meant.

The transcription reads like she was saying that BHO isn’t smart – since people are never scared of those they consider dumber than themselves. To say that he’s not afraid of smart people is to imply that he’s not smart.

Don’t you think this comment was already scripted before the announcement? Or something? No one’s this stupid.

Jaibones on September 8, 2008 at 7:47 PM

Michelle O. really shouldn’t oughta go there.

From the NYT, September 18, 1987

Biden Admits Plagiarism in School But Says It Was Not ‘Malevolent’:

Mr. Biden, who graduated from the law school in 1968, was 76th in a class of 85.

The file also included Mr. Biden’s transcript from his days as an undergraduate at the University of Delaware. In his first three semesters, his grades were C’s or D’s, with three exceptions: two A’s in physical education courses, a B in a course on ”Great English Writers” and an F in R.O.T.C. The grades improved somewhat later but were never exceptional.

I don’t mean to be an impolitic guest here, but are we ever going back to ISSUES? Like maybe what has just happened, the socialism/taxpayer bailout of crony capitalism with Fannie and Freddie? The fact that the U.S. economy has now become a jobs eating machine instead of a jobs creation machine? It’s not like there aren’t plenty of things of substance going on. Why compete so much with the mags at the super market check out?

How smart is Biden? Smart enough that he’s now taking credit for anticipating the path to victory in Iraq

BTW, there is no “path to victory in Iraq” even after a long five and a half years. As the New York cab driver said, “You can’t get there from here.” It’s Islam, baby! Maliki likes Mahmoud much better than he likes George or John.

Why do they have to haul out their wives to campaign for the husbands. To wit:

2. Tuh-ree-zah for Johnny boy in 2004
3. Michelle (not my belle) in 2008

Why do they have to hide behind women’s skirts? Or in Hillary’s case, pants suit.

This is right out of the playbook, the liberal codespeak. It’s an obvious slight, but it’s presented in such a way that it could be explained away later.

Of course I could say, “There is smart and then there is quota-adjusted smart”, but that would be rude.

reaganaut on September 8, 2008 at 8:00 PM

Recall that Margaret Thatcher once said, “Being powerful is a lot like being a woman: If you have to tell someone that you are, invariably, you are not.”

My collie says:

I guess that’s why we have video clips of Joe Biden telling others that his IQ is vastly superior.

Here’s the transcript:

On April 3, 1987, at a campaign stop in Claremont, N.H., a voter named Frank innocently asked Biden what law school he attended and how he performed there.

“I think I have a much higher IQ than you do,” replied Biden, who went to Syracuse University College of Law. “I went to law school on a full academic scholarship.”

He told the astonished man that while he admittedly did not do well his first year because he didn’t want to be in law school, he did much better his second and third years and ended up in the top half of his class. “I won the international moot court competition.”

Without being asked, Biden then boasted about his performance in college, at the University of Delaware, telling Frank that he had been named the “outstanding student in the political-science department. . . . I graduated with three degrees from college. . . . And I’d be delighted to sit back and compare my IQ to yours if you’d like, Frank.”
