Congressional candidates have a fee-vah and the only prescription is Palinmania

posted at 9:45 pm on September 8, 2008 by Allahpundit

This is what happened to Tom Eagleton shortly before he dropped out, right? Insatiable demand among his own party’s rank and file for stops in their districts to boost congressional turnout?

Ten days after the pick, she’s the most popular Republican in America. (Except, maybe, for errrr … Colin Powell.)

One Republican source called it a “huge and immediate” response and attributed it to Palin’s role in helping close the enthusiasm gap between the GOP and Democrats.

“There’s a lot of requests being made,” the source said. “But there’s only 58 days until the election, and they’ll be heavily campaigning. The details will have to be worked out…

Congressional campaigns contacted by The Hill were nearly unanimous in saying they would love for Palin to visit their districts. Many had already requested her presence, and most of the rest said they would do so soon…

[Rep. Tom] Feeney said the “last Republican to enter the national stage with such impressive force was Ronald Reagan in 1964, with his ‘A Time for Choosing’ speech on behalf of Barry Goldwater.”…

President Bush’s and Vice President Cheney’s low approval ratings make them risky campaign trail guests, and McCain hasn’t always motivated the base of the party, even if Republicans appear to be coming off a successful convention.

The current going rate for a seat at the head table and a photo with our heroine: $50,000. A spokesman for one congressional candidate in Maryland says he’ll settle for Todd Palin if they can’t net the ‘Cuda. Exit question: Let’s say, hypothetically, my crazy pessimism proves well founded and Maverick loses narrowly in November. What does Palin do in the aftermath? Barring any major screw-ups before the election, she’ll be the biggest star in the party — bright enough that it’s hard to imagine her going back to Alaska and lying low for three years until the 2012 primaries. It’s too late to run for Stevens’s Senate seat, though, and there’s no reason to think Lisa Murkowski will want to step aside when her term’s up in 2010. Palin’s profile will stay reasonably high thanks to energy issues, but aside from that she’ll be in media Siberia, with the DNC doing whatever it can to help Alaska Dems hassle her to derail her before she can run for president four years from now. Or am I missing something? They’re not going to take our ‘Cuda away from us, are they?

Can we take back the House this year?

Ummm… No, she’ll spend lots time in New Hampshire and Iowa ;)

Illinidiva on September 8, 2008 at 9:50 PM

Funny how the times have changed. This were the same people not too long ago were trying to pass themselves off as Obama suporters. These people couldn’t find enough excuses not to go to the GOP convention because they didn’t like funerals and now they have changed their tunes.

Somewhere John McCain is laughing and laughing hard.

We need coattails, but priority has to be to keep the White House. Congressional candidates should go to them for photo ops, and to outline shared goals (ie: Drill baby drill), but McCain/Palin should stay focused on the big prize.

Not with this conservative. He couldn’t stomach what victory looks like and talked the Elder Bush into stopping destroying saddams military. He was a wishy washy secretary of state who for nearly three years knew exactly who told robert novak about valerie plame(his lieutenant armitage) and allowed patrick fitzgerald to go on a fishing expedition that resulted in severely damaging a good mans life. Scooter Libby cooperated 150% with fitzgerald and was screwed because he mistakenly said he thought he learned who joe wilsons wife was from tim russert. powell has always tried to straddle the fence and get adulation from both sides. Not from me. To me he is a failed general and a man without honor.

peacenprosperity on September 8, 2008 at 10:02 PM

Big Mac and The ‘Cuda can’t do anything to endorse or help Stevens: it would genuinely undermine their reformist argument. Better just to count it as a lost seat, try to save the others, and be glad the old corruptionist will be out of the Senate. Politicians like Stevens were largely responsible for the debacle in 2006. We just don’t need people like him in the party.

irishspy on September 8, 2008 at 10:02 PM

It would be great if Palin could make it into the districts where the races were close, no doubt she would sway a lot of votes toward the Republican candidates. But there isn’t much time for that between now and November.

Red State Feminism admitting that Palin is likely to become the next VP, notes that she is destined only for oblivion.

AS IF! Eleanore Roosevelt wasn’t even VP, merely the unwanted wife of FDR, but is not forgotten as a significant role player in America.

Sarah Palin is no Eleanore Roosevelt, one of each is quite enough. Sarah Palin knows herself and loves our country, and rallies the public to share a sense of unity. Palin and Mrs. Roosevelt do share qualities in common.

Considering what a dynamo Palin is, for such people to presume that this first female VP will never be remembered reflects ONLY where those so presumptive see themselves in time. Forgotten.

She’ll then have to appoint his replacement. Kinda tough to appoint yourself, I think. Anything is possible with ‘Cuda though.

But enough of this negative talk. All the national polls at RCP are red or tied, Obama is tongue tied and grasping around like Bill Clinton at an intern convention, Biden is back to talking about how smart he thinks he is, Hillary ain’t no holla back girl and Air Force O has now twice failed to get off the ground because they spent all the money on paint, custom seats and spinners and forgot the sound system. On top of it, Obama now has to run around Hollywood like Oliver Twist and whining, “More please!” to keep up with McCain’s built in bank account while Republicans are tossing so many dollar bills at Sarah Palin, you’d think she was wearing pasties.

It ain’t anywhere near a knockout yet, be the are sure as on their heels and dazed. Now it’s time for McCain to carpet bomb him some more commies.

Or am I missing something?

What you’re missing with all due respect Allah, is that the average American is finally seeing though the total misrepresentation of the Democrats chosen Presidential candidate—-some one who is just now getting vetted and the glamor is falling off of the hope and change masquerade of unadulterated socialism. Even tonight’s portion of O’reilly’s interview with Obama has unvieled his curtain of admitted redistribution of wealth. Since Obama’s defeat of Clinton, the man has attempted to sprint to the middle without getting noticed that a majority of his flipflops are exactly what got him past a centrist Hillary. Compared to Kerry or Gore, this is by far the worst choice the Democratic Party has ever attempted to present to a nation hungry for change, and yet he competes daily against a VP nominee with more experience. The feeble attacks that only brings more attention to his own ineptness feeds the conservative movement far better than any could have wished.

Look at the title of your post Allah. Sarah Palin is the “real deal” when it comes to instant celebrity with in the political theater. The only thing that will be “missing” is the credit John McCain might not recieve for making the right choice.

Gov. Palin can easily stay active. It’s called a PAC. It’s what Huckabee is using to pay for travel and supporting candidates. Also, with satellite tv and the internet a popular political figure can remain active especially with passionate supporters.

Most importantly, Palin needs to be Palin. Forget wasting her time in the Senate. She should remain governor of Alaska, win re-election, and really think about where she wants to take the country. The GOP nomination will be her’s to lose.

I think the celebrity of Obama is wearing off. All McCain had to do was offer something different than Obama. Obama was a media driven fad that is wearing thin.

I look for the dems to do what Clinton did to keep from being impeached. They will read their landry list of social programs and try and graph them onto Obama as his teflon armor. The dems will play the “If Obama loses we lose these goodies) memo

The GOP has to make the American people understand that there is an alternative to the dirty laundry list of the dems.

Assuming McCain loses, I think the most likely outcome for Palin is that the media derides her as a failed choice, seeks to hang McCain’s loss on her, and declare that she is finished in national politics.

They will be satisfied to live in denial and have her disappear into Alaskan obscurity, until 3 years later she reappears and runs away with the Republican nomination.

Be prepared for a bunch of talking heads propounding on how the Republicans have chosen a “proven loser” for their candidate, and are doomed to failure.

Technically Nixon was a senator as well. As was Harry Truman but they both came via other routes to the Presidency (including LBJ)

Republicans need something like the Contract with America that all candidates for House and Senate sign up to. Start with:

Drill, Drill, Drill
No Earmarks
Cleanup Corruption – Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, etc

The current going rate for a seat at the head table and a photo with our heroine: $50,000.

I couldn’t ask for $50,000..

I’ll go for free..

a fee-vah and the only prescription is Palinmania

Don’t make me turn 3200 mils, redo, and expand, my “Obama the Piper” ditty for this Palinmania sheeple madness. You won’t like it. In fact I can almost feel a coming together of Piper, Emperor, McScorpian, Carbon Man and God only knows what else.

If she loses to Obama, she will make the speaking circuit, as a shadow president, correcting him, chastising him, sort of like Algor tried to do, except people actually respect ‘Cuda whereas Algor was a tragi-comic fat clown.

I had a dream the other night that they got elected and shortly into his term, Maverick resigned due to health concerns and Palin appointed Rudy as VP after she took the oath of office. Then I woke up … and needed a cigarette.

OT: McCain/Palin in No. VA (Fairfax High School) this Wednesday morning: virginia.johnmccain.com

Look at the title of your post Allah. Sarah Palin is the “real deal” when it comes to instant celebrity with in the political theater. The only thing that will be “missing” is the credit John McCain might not recieve for making the right choice.

Rovin on September 8, 2008 at 10:28 PM

I wouldn’t worry about that. McCain impressed many conservatives with this creative and brilliant choice. I think the enthusiasm is so great because it is double – both pro-Palin and pro-McCain (in that he had the guts and brains to make such a pick). For me, it gave me hope that McCain might be able to come up with an equally creative approach to the Iranian problem (that would really be something) and also gave me much more confidence in him, in general.

progressoverpeace on September 8, 2008 at 11:03 PM

Let’s say, hypothetically, my crazy pessimism proves well founded and Maverick loses narrowly in November.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot over?

Anything is possible but the trends are all in our direction.

That’s been one of my favorite parts in this election cycle..

the number of catch phrases that the Democrats have thrown out there and the Republicans have caught and tossed back into the Dem’s face..

that is one more phrase to throw back at them..

DaveC on September 8, 2008 at 11:06 PM

IF the McCain/Palin ticket loses, she will return and complete her normal term as Governor. The temptation is to say we are all finished at that point, including Sarah Palin. In reality, she should continue to do what she does… govern well. Depending upon the political landscape, she might take a look in four years or eight. I imagine her airmiles to be on Sunday morning talk shows will increase dramatically.

I strongly believe there is no way Senator Obama will be elected…. way too liberal… Bradley Effect combined with the high proportion of Democrat racists. Then again, I didn’t think there was any way Bill Clinton could ever be elected. A mitigating factor on that comparison is there is no Ross Perot siphoning off a large share of the vote this time, so for Senator Obama to win, he will need to get 50% of the vote. The last time a Democrat got 50% of the vote was when Carter beat Ford after Watergate…32 years ago. Since Eisenhower was elected, Kennedy won with barely 50% and Johnson hammered Goldwater (post Kennedy murder). There is no support for the left, especially extreme left. If 60%+ of the population are truly center-right, the election should be a McCain/Palin landslide.

If they pound on drill, drill, drill and work hard to push the background of Senator Obama that the media doesn’t seem to want to touch:

Ayers-American terrorist
Ayers/Annenberg story
Rezko-Syrian born political fund raiser and convicted felon
Rezko’s links to Nadhmi Auchi – Iraqi born billionaire.
Radical abortion vote
Earmarks – particularly those benefiting his wife’s employer and Biden’s son

Pound these items until they are common knowledge… the press certainly won’t bring them up.
