Condoleezza Rice on Palin’s experience

This clip isn’t remarkable so much for the questions asked by CNN’s Zain Verjee to Condoleezza Rice about Sarah Palin’s experience and lack thereof, but for the question that didn’t get asked. Rice dodges the question for the most part, but tells Verjee that a variety of experiences are helpful in foreign policy:

So what question did Verjee miss?  How about questioning whether Barack Obama, who has even less experience in foreign policy than the Governor of Alaska, could handle himself in crisis situations?  Obama, after all, wants to be President, not Vice President, and as such would be in charge of constructing and executing America’s foreign policy, all without any formal interactions at all with other nations – unlike Sarah Palin, who has to deal with Canada and Russia on the borders of her state.

Rice, I’m sure, would have graciously avoided answering that question as well.  Too bad CNN didn’t think to at least ask it.

An accidental oversight, I am sure…

Ed, where’s the clip?

who has to deal with Canada and Russia on the borders of her state.

Can we drop the Russia thing? Palin never had to deal with Russia. It just sounds silly.

She did work with Canada; yes. Definitely highlight that.

lorien1973 on September 8, 2008 at 1:12 PM

Yeah, they COULD have asked the question. But, they aren’t trying to make Obama look bad.

Hmmm…there might be something to Allah’s thesis after all. CNN is angling for the coveted ‘worst of the nets’ award.

He does?

I thought he wanted to be Grand Poobah of the Milky Way Galaxy.

Democratic Congressman Seestak saying that Congress is unable to act on Energy.

That is by design…Condi would likely have repeated her answer word for word making the “attack” nothing of the sort.

Too bad CNN didn’t think to at least ask it.

That question swings two ways. Suppose the MSM is successful in painting the election between two less than perfectly qualified teams, how does that help McCain?

JiangxiDad on September 8, 2008 at 1:22 PM

Agreed Lorein. Planes may have scrambled to chase off Russian planes on a routine basis from the state, but that’s not diplomacy or negotiation and is a familiar dance, well-known to the players. They could do it as well if Alaska was uninhabited (except by them).

Her relationship with Canadian VIPs is much more interesting and relevant. Let’s hear the stories around that and maybe the opinions of some of those who’ve negotiated with her. But saying “Russia and Canada” discredits the good work she’s done with the latter.

lorien1973 on September 8, 2008 at 1:12 PM

Haven’t Russian planes been flirting with AK airspace pretty routinely? I’m not sure who sends up our interceptors, but I’ll bet she has full knowlege.

a capella on September 8, 2008 at 1:23 PM

Didnt North Korea also launch missiles that had the range to hit Alaska as well ?

William Amos on September 8, 2008 at 1:25 PM

Actually, the Alaskan State Government, with Palin as its executive, DID have to deal with the Russians, the Japanese and more nations as a part of the management of the Bering Sea and coastal fisheries. The Alaskan fisheries are nothing to laugh at from a food policy perspective as well as financially.

Easy.

Palin is running for VP, she doesn’t have to be ready to run the country on day one.

Obama is running for Pres. He does have to be ready to run the country on day one.

In addition. In terms of executive experience, being a governor trumps being a senator.

HawaiiLwyr on September 8, 2008 at 1:32 PM

The Alaksan Air Guard runs matador ops as some of the pilots slang it….

they did more intercepts in the 80s and 90s than the active USAF.

sven10077 on September 8, 2008 at 1:33 PM

It is so irksome to me that yet again, they hammer the light experience line about a VP when the top of the Dem ticky has NO EXPERIENCE PERIOD. Gawd can’t they see how silly that looks to everyone with 1/2 a brain?

At least Rice was extremely agile in her dance around – she did say she has great confidence in McCain.

Alaska is our first line of defense, missile and interceptors against Russia. Word is she has been briefed at the highest levels of security, higher then any other governor.
I think during the debates you may find out how much she does know about military security.
You don’t think she knows about those Russian “trawlers”??

I respect that.

Exactly what I have been saying for weeks. This is what they are holding back, it will come out in the debates. I think the Dems are in for a shock when they find out how much international real experience she has. The Gov of Hawaii hinted at it the other day.

right2bright on September 8, 2008 at 1:40 PM

Yes, but who is Verjee to question the Messiah?

morganfrost on September 8, 2008 at 1:40 PM

Not to put to fine a point on it, but how much foreign policy experience did the former Governor of Arkansas have when he was elected president for two terms?

PJ Emeritus on September 8, 2008 at 1:41 PM

Where in the hell are all these Republicans they keep talking about?

I have talked to every one I know both Democrat and republican. I have yet to even sense the slightest reservation about Governor Palin from a Republican.

And only two of the Dems haven’t jumped ship, YET.

I am starting to think they are making this crap up.

sven, Alaska also has a actual Militia. In which the Federal Government DOES pay for. It is small but real. National Guard isn’t the only thing taking care of Alaska.

I disagree, I have been to Alaska, Canada, and the Can/Am highway many times.

Canada is our weird lib cousin, but there is a relatively easy path there.

The only reason it is a “island” is southlanders who take her for granted because Alaskans silently bust their asses to feed this nation fish and fuel.

no communism no love for Russia….

for a real laugher you need to read the US press’ and comintern’s gymnastics on Hitler and Stalin and peace from say circa 33to 39 and circa 41-44…..

pretty funny how magically in lockstep our press is to the comintern’s press releases….I wonder if Keef is someone’s grandson.

sven10077 on September 8, 2008 at 1:56 PM

Rice seems to think that Obama is experienced and would make a good president.

Funny how a pale face with more experience at actually running something and getting things done seems to miss the nod from Condi. I wonder what attribute Obama and Condi have in common that a pale face lacks since being a fellow Republican and a woman don’t seem to count.

Hening on September 8, 2008 at 2:03 PM

upinak, how much do you get paid to be in the AK militia? I might want to move there and join.

kirkill on September 8, 2008 at 2:15 PM

It’s kind of hard to put Rice in that position since she probably hasn’t met Palin. Still, MP3s are up here.

Agree, unless there is something more substantial to the claim other than near proximity, such as possible Alaska ANG dealings with airspace breaches as the other poster mentioned.

Condi should have said,”Well barry obama’s running mate says he isn’t ready to be president.” That would have shut up that libyan secret police/cnn station chiefs propagandist mouth.

<blockquoteSarah Palin, who has to deal with Canada and Russia on the borders of her state.
Good lord this talking point is weak.

How about questioning whether Barack Obama, who has even less experience in foreign policy than the Governor of Alaska

At least Obama served on the Foreign Relations Committee in the Senate. What is Palins experience in foreign policy? Aside from being pretty close to Russia.

crr6 on September 8, 2008 at 3:26 PM

The only true experience that Obama has is being a lapdog puppet for one of the most corrupt political machines in the country. O’Reilly should receive jail time for what he did to Obama in the interview he had with him. Obama was no match for the O’Reilly arrogance and babbled incoherently when pressed on his views. Poor Barry must be desperate to take such a risk.

By the way crr6, you’ve got Barry and Joey mixed up. Barry had the Commitee on Afghanistan which he never had a meeting on. Joe chairs the FRC.

volsense on September 8, 2008 at 4:24 PM

If the American military is interacting with the Russian military on any level, you can be damn sure it ain’t the governor of Alaska making the decisions.

B26354 on September 8, 2008 at 5:35 PM

I’d say that any Governor who can get a Canadian company into spending $40 billion of their money to build a gas pipeline from Alaska to the lower 48, and can also talk/cajole several major oil companies who really want their own pipelines into sharing the Canadian-built one is more than capable of handling tough negotiations with any nation.

Let’s face it: these oil companies have more people and more money than many countries do!
