Captain Earmark: Palin can’t just reinvent herself on earmarks

posted at 4:30 pm on September 8, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | regular view

I’m at a loss, and not just because I already wrote about this on Saturday. Not only does this tool inexplicably insist on stoking the inexperience comparisons to Palin by attacking the bottom of the ticket; not only is he hopelessly compromised on this subject, in stark contrast to McCain; but he also cynically “reinvented” himself a few months ago as an earmark reformer after spending years carving off chunks of pork for his buddies and moneymen. What’s next? A press conference with Wright and Pfleger at Trinity to knock Palin’s church for being “eccentric”?

Well, how about Gov. Palin? She’s you know, an up and comer from Alaska. She – they’re starting to run an ad now saying she opposed the bridge to nowhere. Well now, let’s get the facts clear here. When she was mayor, she hired a Washington lobbyist to get earmarks – pork barrel spending – all the things that John McCain says is bad, she lobbied to get! And got a whole lot of it. When it came to the bridge to nowhere, she was for it until everybody started raising a fuss about it and she started running for governor and then suddenly she was against it!

You remember that? For it before you were against it? I mean you can’t just make stuff up. You can’t just recreate yourself. You can’t just reinvent yourself. The American people aren’t stupid.

So saith The One, after having spent the better part of three months recreating and reinventing himself on issues great and small. Exit question one: If the Democrats think Palin’s record on the bridge to nowhere is a winner, how come they’re flushing webpages about it down the toilet? And exit question two: What’s with the patronizing “up and comer” language? That’s the second time he’s tried to diminish her in a week.

Update: I linked this in a previous post too but it bears repeating: Which party’s ticket can boast not one but two people who supported the bridge to nowhere? Hint: Not the GOP’s.

Update: “I thought he wouldn’t want to go there.”

Obama on Palin: ‘You can’t just reinvent yourself’

This from the guy who’s changed every single position he ran on, so far.

You can’t just recreate yourself. You can’t just reinvent yourself. The American people aren’t stupid.

~ ~ Barack Obama

Thankfully, no, they’re not. We’ll have proof, for, or against, in Nov.

I smell a little desperation, senator.

I can’t wait to see which of the many ‘adjustments’ D’oh!bama’s made tht the McCain advertising team packs around that second paragraph.

If senator Obama figures out a way to get “the teleprompter guy” to accompany him everywhere he goes, we may be in trouble – then again, maybe not.

Somebody from freerepublic said the hired lobbyist came after she was mayor. Somebody from alaska I read in some blogs comments section claimed that a lot of these earmarks attributed to her are not ones she requested. IIRC, they were requested by entities like the department of transportation or whatever. I have no idea how to look into this.

It would be better if when she was sitting down with Gibson that they would take out a big list of stuff floating around and have her straighten things out…

ninjapirate on September 8, 2008 at 4:39 PM

she didn’t fight against the bridge like she said.

Fify, Senator.

Yup, Barack, go after the second slot on the ticket. I’d rather see someone flipflop to the side of no earmarks than someone who is always for them.

How about the $100,000.00 Gazebo in Chiago??

This was an “O” Dumby earmark.

He now says the surge worked.
Hes now for drilling.
hes now against earmarks.

It’s not Bushes ecomomy stupid it’s the Democratic high gas prices shutting down buisness.
In Bushes economy the Stock Market hit 14000
Jobless rate at 5.2

Then the Dems got control. Gas from $2.20 $4.50 a gal.

But the Arab nations that the Clintons have buddied up with are doing fine in the jobs department and rahing in Billions of our energy money.
All because of the Democratic no drill policies.

Mr_Magoo on September 8, 2008 at 4:44 PM

in the debate, McCain needs to point to Obama’s pork. Including naming specifically the $1 Million earmark to Biden’s son and/or Michelle’s hospital

Commercial needed:

“You can’t just reinvent yourself…”

- Flip on Wright
- Flip on Bush Tax Cuts
- Flip on Surge
- Nuance on Iraq timeline
- 1 billion in earmarks
- Nuance on oil drilling
- 130 present votes
- Biden “I stand by that statment, he’s not ready”
- Hillary “McCain brings a lifetime of experience, Barack has a speech he made in 2002″

…etc.

First intelligent thing that Bambi ever said.

Damiano on September 8, 2008 at 4:45 PM

You’ll have to excuse Barry, he’s still in “try and baffle ‘em with bullshit” mode. Still waiting for the MSM to ask him and Biden about their votes for that bridge.

Governor Palin must be improving in Brarry’s sight. Before she was ‘just a mayor of a small town by the name of Wasilly’, of course little or no mention that her current title is GOVERNOR. But now he concedes she’s ‘an up and comer’.

Really don’t know why Barry keeps picking on her. She already outclasses him by her actions, rather than his words.

Is Gutman still working for the Obama campaign? Still waiting on word of his “firing”. As Obama likes to say, words have meaning. Any word on the MSM asking him of Gutman’s status?

McCain and Palin need to obtain a copy of Obama’s U.S. Forms 1040 for 2004 and 2005 and any documentation sufficient to show the $1,000,000 earmark that Obama requested and had directed to Michelle Obama’s employer in 2006.

Then, at each whistle-stop speech, McCain and Palin should explain the following:

In 2004, Michelle Obama’s employer paid her $121,910.

Obama was elected to the U.S. Senate in late 2004 and took office in early 2005.

In 2005, Michelle Obama’s employer paid her $316,912. Nice raise.

In 2006, Obama requested that a $1,000,000 earmark be directed to Michelle Obama’s employer.

Finally, McCain and Palin should ask the audience what they think is going on.

The theological term for this is “glossolallia.” For many devout evangelical Christians this is a sign that the believer is channeling the Holy Spirit. As a Catholic, I’m not much into the glossolallia scene, but neither do I scorn or ridicule it.

I have seen video clips of these folks speaking in tongues. Frankly, I cannot understand what they are saying. On the other hand, I have yet to hear any one of them screaming, “God damn America, the U.S. of KKK-A, America’s chickens have come home to roost.”

The beauty of the big picture is that Palin can swing entire argument into drill here, drill now, if it comes up in a debate. Unquestionably Alaska has the most earmarks per capita, but Alaska lives off federal dollars because they are unable to access their natural resources. So criticism on the earmark issue can easily be turned to yes, I’m trying to get the state off the federal teat, by drilling. Glad you agree, Joe, let’s drill ANWAR.

Just let the back-and-forth on earmarks continue to grow in volume — you know, until enough people are paying attention. Then ask him about the earmark for his wife’s employer, and her sudden raise.

Then while he’s reeling…

… note that Todd Palin resigned his job (or took a long leave of absence) to avoid a conflict of interest when his wife started doing the pipeline deal. And note that she ended up with a deal *less* favorable to her husband’s employer, to the benefit of the citizens of Alaska. Contrast with Obama taking money from the taxpayers to inflate his wife’s salary.

Reform vs. Corrupt Politician — always a winning platform.

Associated Press division of Obama campaign

Oh, my heavens. Do Obama and his AP sycophants seriously believe that Senators are working at the beck and call of the Governor? If Obama had actually done anything here in Illinois since being coronated to the Senate, he’d know better. He doesn’t even know our Governor’s name, where to reach him, or whether he works out of the capital, or Chicago (it’s Chicago).

He is falling apart before our gleeful eyes – which, if I recall, is exactly what we’ve been warning everyone about for the past year…

Yeah, actually in this context it is close to being an “uppity white trash” insinuation given the way she’s been attacked by him as just a chump backwoods mayor as well as in the press as trailer trash. But she and her family are used to snooty “redneck” “valley trash” stuff and just embrace it. God love em.

Before this election is over “uppity white trash” is going to be the hottest demographic trend.

econavenger on September 8, 2008 at 5:23 PM

Someone on Fox said it plainly:

Mayors and Governors do not ask for earmarks, they’re given earmarks and they have to do stuff with them.

It’s Senators and Representitives who ASK for earmarks, and force that money onto the states at the waste of national taxpayers.

So yes, Palin was given earmarks and had to do something with the money; she had no choice.

Barry asked for the money, and kept asking for the money wantonly.

Including the bridge to nowhere. They were for it before they were for it.

Obama has lobbyists on his campaign, abandoned public financing, and has sought $1 million in earmarks per working day in his Senate tenure.

And he’s complaining about Sarah Palin?

They must be made of brass.

I can’t believe he’s inviting a comparison of the two tickets’ earmarks record. Has Obama gone completely insane? McCain has led the fight against earmarks in the Senate, while Obama and Biden have both been feeding on earmarks like pigs at the taxpayers’ trough.

Yes, let’s talk about earmarks, Obama. By all means, let’s talk about it. Let’s never stop talking about it.

Alaska is still and by far the largest per-capita consumer of federal pet-project spending.

This is pathetic — how is Gov. Palin responsible for what House Reps do? I don’t get it…why are they trying to do this? They can’t possibly think they can win with this, can they?

I’ve heard of auto-genocide, but this is ridiculous.

You have to laugh a little bit about the dichotomy of Obama’s charges. She’s inexperienced but a skillful politician. Which, in turn, implies that she has experience.

Which is it?

Palin ought to make a play on the “up and coming” remarks and call Duh 1 out on it. Maybe ask does he talk to all women with such indifference, or just those kicking his tail?

The Obama campaign needs a laugh track these days. If there’s any sort of serious strategy here, beyond the pure panic and desperation that seems apparent, maybe he’s trying to “muddy the waters,” sowing enough confusion that he can eventually try the “everyone here has made mistakes” approach. It’s a horrible miscalculation, but it’s understandable coming from someone who vastly overestimates his own star power.

I think the Obama campaign is still coordinating with the nutroots and trying to throw everything they can at Palin, hoping something sticks. It’s weak and futile, but it’s the kind of thing a panicked neophyte does. It also demonstrates a grievous lack of appreciation for how strong McCain is, coming out of the convention. There must be people in the Obama camp telling each other that McCain’s just riding Palin’s popularity, and his whole campaign will collapse if they can take her down. They’re shooting at the wrong target – but they don’t have many other options. It’s not as if Barry can do something dramatic that will boost his own standing. His peak has come and gone, and that thin resume isn’t going to suddenly cough up something that will shift the momentum back to him.
