Video: No, Obama didn’t “admit” to being a Muslim on ABC

posted at 3:00 pm on September 7, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | regular view

Within 10 minutes of this airing we’d already gotten four or five e-mails about it; 20 minutes later, a bowdlerized version had already hit YouTube and begun circulating. I despise lefty sites for twisting conservatives’ words by selectively editing clips, so let’s cut this one off at the pass before it gets going. Here’s the full exchange with Stephanopoulos, making it perfectly clear that when he says “my Muslim faith” he’s referring to how the people smearing him see him, not how he sees himself. No mas, please.

Exit question: If McCain’s responsible for every smear leveled against Obama by a conservative whether he condemns it or not — as certain prominent nutroots bloggers have long asserted — then by extension isn’t Sullivan’s Palin smearapalooza a de facto operation of the Obama campaign? Assuming, that is, that it’s not an actual operation of the Obama campaign.

Barry should just stop doing interviews. I think the pressure is getting to him.

my aseertion…meet point.

I find the nuance interesting…I also think it is fascinating the newsies either are genuine in not seeing it or so on board they are hiding it.

sven10077 on September 7, 2008 at 3:05 PM

The actual point about the McCain came NOT making this Muslim case is stronger then this poor clip. And the “Fox News, let’s say” Ha. That’s a construction. He IS implying that McCain’s lower echelons MIGHT have done it. Typical Obama.

And news to Obama: liberal blogs did attack Palin.

Spirit of 1776 on September 7, 2008 at 3:05 PM

poor clip = poor charge that he is Muslim from the clip. Just so no confusion.

Spirit of 1776 on September 7, 2008 at 3:05 PM

I saw it – he just mis-spoke – it was no biggy – I also wish certain conservatives wouldn’t act like the Kos Kids

djl130 on September 7, 2008 at 3:06 PM

MY muslim faith” vs. “accused me of being a muslim”

I’m just sayin’.

And thanks to George for correcting Obama. Why don’t you just tell Obie to sit tight while you explain his policies for him.

fossten on September 7, 2008 at 3:06 PM

Agreed. Thanks for posting this; my head was spinning.

I know I was upset as all get out when the Obama kids clipped Sarah Palin’s “what the VP does” interview to make her sound like an idiot.

I thought it was immature and salacious.

So while I want to see Obama say something incredibly foot-in-mouth worthy, this just wasn’t it. Thanks, AP.

JammieWearingFool on September 7, 2008 at 3:08 PM

and Allah you’re a lawyer…Barry did not say when corrected by Stephie…”my alledged Muslim faith”….

How can he speak with such imprecision if he is the best Harvard Edicated Professor of Constititutional Law like his denizens say?

Hell he barely ever sounds like a good lawyer, more like an ambulance dhaser.

What happened to Obama’s mojo? I’m guessing it’s in a jar on Jesse Jackson’s nightstand.

Everybody needs to calm down. Mock his gaffes, yes, and point out how they indicate how rattled he is, but try to keep it to a dull screech.

How come you never hear anyone else in the public eye having slip-ups like that?

fossten on September 7, 2008 at 3:09 PM

It was clear he meant to “defend” himself from “allegations” and not to admit faith (and who said he did, except for some people in your mailbox?) – but it is a heavy-weight gaffe nonetheless – and i didn’t see the reason to post it in an apologizing tone. Behhh. Take a page off Ace and LGF.

When I saw this on LGF, I just laughed out loud, because it came off as a Freudian slip…I knew he didn’t mean to say it, and it wasn’t an admission, but it was pretty funny.

Not really the same thing as taking Palin’s VP quote out of its real context, imo.

Well done, Allah.

*applauds*

Folks need to drop the Muslim thing. The full context of this is far more damning, IMO. He whines about “Republican tactics” without any evidence while a member of his own finance committee was trashing Palin on Laura Ingraham (and is coincidentally a contributor to Huffington Post), his campaign has sent out at least 3 three different emails, stating that the GOP and Palin are trashing community organizers and the people they serve, the media has quoted left wing websites as sources and Olbermann is a contributor to the Daily Kos.

This is going WAY TOO FAR.

Damiano on September 7, 2008 at 3:12 PM

Assuming, that is, that it’s not an actual operation of the Obama campaign.

It would fit the MO that seems to follow Barry around (unsealed divorce records, petition signatures dsallowed, etc.).

Regardless of how he meant the gaffe, right now his campaign staffers are shaking their heads and looking at the ground.

sven10077 on September 7, 2008 at 3:13 PM

While I don’t like creative editing, still not seen the edited clip but believe AP to be accurate.

Duh 1 is still lying on one aspect of all of this. The woman he beat in the primaries and as of two days ago called on that same woman to go out and counter Palin on his behalf. It was the Clinton campaign releasing pictures and pushing that “muslim rumor”. The people on his side did this to him, not anyone on the McCain side.

Hog Wild on September 7, 2008 at 3:13 PM

I though the Obama=Muslim rumours originally came out of the Hillary campaign. Please correct me if I am “remembering” incorrectly.

If we’re going to go with Obama’s religious convictions, let’s skip this fruitless talk about is Obama Muslim or not and get back to discussing what KIND of Christian goes to a church like the one he went to for 20 odd years. He might not be a Muslim, but an assertion can be made that he’s a bit of a racist….

I saw this interview this morning and Allah is correct. It was his phrasing and when he uttered those words the way he did I was hoping that I wouldn’t be seeing that in a future ad.

However, since Obama is unable to answer a question directly his constant circling of the issues is going to results in clips like this. Watching that interview was painful. Ummm…errr…just sayin’!

I agree, there’s nothing here at all; it was just funny to hear Obama muck up his words. On the other hand, in this very same inteview, after being asked about Palin’s experience, Obama said…

Found that comment to be far more noteworthy.

Here’s the full exchange with Stephanopoulos, making it perfectly clear that when he says “my Muslim faith” he’s referring to how the people smearing him see him, not how he sees himself. No mas, please.

Well … Stephanopoulos certainly had a problem understanding that, and B Hussein, too, as he had to correct himself, correcting Stephanopoulos, who was correcting him. Hardly a smear.

The way he said “my muslim faith” was also pretty odd. Most people would have said “my alleged muslim faith” – which is why Stephie tried to correct it to “Christian”. The inartful, great orator strikes again!

BHO’s dad was muslim, and stepdad, so he was a muslim as a child. What’s to deny?

progressoverpeace on September 7, 2008 at 3:30 PM

rightwing blogosphere shouldn’t make a big deal about this as it’s out of context.

But, as someone said above in the comments, Obama CAMPAIGN and surrogates should stop taking McCain out of context for $5 million is rich and Palin for what does the VP do, among others. Obama even had that $5 million is rich in his convention speech for crying out loud.

Obama Claims He’s Visited 57 States:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpGH02DtIws

scrubjay on September 7, 2008 at 3:34 PM

There are legitimate reasons of his own making which require Mr. Obama has to swat these flies about his faith. Let’s be honest. Does anyone think for a second that Obama doesn’t hold ideals which, promulgated osmotically through his “spiritual mentor” Jeremiah Wright, are similar to the black separatist/liberation theology mindset? Mr. Obama seeks the approval of domestic terrorists, was introduced to Percy Sutton by a Wahabbi (the most radicalized strain of the Muslim faith), went to a church for 20 years which granted Louis Farrakhan its highest honor, and has repeatedly given lip service to Palestinian terrorist cause celebs. He also happens to have been to a Muslim academy and had two Muslim fathers – one natural, one by adoption. Anyone who really cares (as liberals of late are pretending to) about vetting candidates would be blind not to notice that he just this morning very comfortably uttered the words “my muslim faith,” not as if it were something supposed by others trying to slander him, but as something real and tangible he feels which others are trying to smear him for being. There’s no other way to play it.

The thing that liberals don’t get is that nobody on the right would much care if he were a devout Muslim, as long as he was truly a patriotic American who could actually stand to put his hand over his heart during OUR National Anthem, and, in addtion, was someone who truly embraced the American zeitgeist, not that of socialist enabling welfare staters in the EU. But, Barry, as long as you keep denying what being American is, we will deny that you are truly someone who is what he claims to be.

Western_Civ on September 7, 2008 at 3:34 PM

Exit question: If McCain’s responsible for every smear leveled against Obama by a conservative whether he condemns it or not — as certain prominent nutroots bloggers have long asserted — then by extension isn’t Sullivan’s Palin smearapalooza a de facto operation of the Obama campaign? Assuming, that is, that it’s not an actual operation of the Obama campaign.

Projection: rinse and repeat. The Obama campaign is the source of the Palin smearapalooza. It therefore follows, in the eyes of the Obama campaign and a slavish media, that McCain is, de facto, the source of whatever’s out there about Obama. In the elevated discourse of Obama-land, Americans (including Obama orcs, but excluding the annointed in Academia) are essentially brain-dead, and therefore incapable of self-motivation.

Nichevo on September 7, 2008 at 3:34 PM

The very least thing George Stephanopoulos should have done is to ask Sen. Obama exactly when and who said “Obama is a muslim”?

This is the guy claimed McCain supposedly kept reminding voters that he’s black, with a funny name, etc. etc.

In truth, McCain did no such thing. It is Obama himself kept stuffing words into other people’s mouths, and media never call him out on that.

Sir Napsalot on September 7, 2008 at 3:34 PM

If I recall, bho said the right was going to say he is ‘different’, and his ‘faith’ to smear him. Did he do this on purpose to get his point across that we would run with it? As with the ‘race’ thing, he is playing it up big time. Just asking.

But “let’s not play games”, right.

evenfarer on September 7, 2008 at 3:35 PM

Seriously… a gaff is a gaff. Amusing but of little consequence (unless we’re talking about Biden’s slander of races, women, false accusations of drunk driving, etc.)

The highlight of this clip is not that that Obama has yet another gaff for his collection, but his blatantly false yet insistent attitude that the GOP/ McCain have slandered him in any way, while completely ignoring the slander coming out of his own house:

- His statement about Palin- “Well, you know, my understanding is that, uh, Governor Palin’s town of Wasilly [sic] has, uh, 50 employees”
- Campaign email to donors- But worst of all — and this deserves to be noted — they insulted the very idea that ordinary people have a role to play in our political process.
- Biden calls Palin Lieutenant Governor
- Howard” Still not Fired” Gutman
- Obama Camps “hair trigger” reaction to Palin’s selection

Damiano on September 7, 2008 at 3:36 PM

I agree with AP on this… but at the same time, shouldn’t we all expect that someone who’s only admirable attribute is his “speaking” should have been able to phrase his comments differently? I mean come on, he’s got to expect some heat for wording it that way.

This makes me all the more excited to see him dance in the next 3 segments of O’Reilly interviews, especially since he’s finally asked about Ayers, etc. He’s great off script, but he stammers his way through every interview I’ve ever seen him do, which is the opposite of McCain. Mac is stiff on the stump, but quick in town halls and interviews. Bush was often the same way.

But what is telling is that at the end he will not say “Christianity” but says instead “my faith”. Now look, I am not going all, “He is a Muslim! He is a Muslim!” HOWEVER, he is very closely aligned with those WHO ARE MUSLIMS and some very ADAMANT Muslims at that. Rev. J. Wright and Obama hung with Farrakhan, Khadafi, Khalidi, Odinga, etc., and then there is the Ayers connections to several Muslim groups. I would be here to sundown with the website connections so those of you who want to scream prove it; do your on research. And to add to this there are several Hamas phone banks that have been very active in raising money for the MANCHILD. We all have read the headlines and articles about how the Hezbos support him as well. Then there are all those strange donors and bundlers with the campaign donations. All I am saying is that he may not be a practicing Muslim or a solid 100% believing Muslim but he sure has some strange religious bedfellows. You know, “Lie down with dogs and get up with fleas” is not just some hick saying. It is actually possible.

I will say this, I have read a lot about the MANCHILD’s religious beginnings, growth and eventual end, and I agree with Steve Roberts very much. I do not think he believes in anything outside of Alinksy, Black Liberation Theology and his own magnificent self.

It’s more telling than most people will admit.

Seems turnabout is fair play if that is the standard Obama wants to set. The words coming out his mouth about “my Muslim Faith”, per the Obama standards, could be put out there as “fact”. Heck, let’s play that clip followed by a clip of the Trade Center in flames.

Barry did change his name….

Back to Barack O’bama in usage.

up until grad school he was “Barry”…..

he made the decision to go by Barack.

I agree with AP that this is nothing at all to run with. But a commenter at YouTube asserts that this gaffe was edited out of the re-run version. If that is so, then we do have something to run with—the MSM cleaning up after democrats, again.

IrishEi on September 7, 2008 at 3:44 PM

The reason he can’t speak with out a teleprompter and a prepared speech is that he has to sculpt his words to hide his true self and he’s not quick enough to do it on the fly like the Clintons.

If you really want to no what he is all about you should just interview.
Wright and Ayers that will pretty much some it up.

TheSitRep on September 7, 2008 at 3:44 PM

Seriously.

Axelrod needs to keep Obama away from the press for the rest of the election.

Mr. Joe on September 7, 2008 at 3:45 PM

This makes me all the more excited to see him dance in the next 3 segments of O’Reilly interviews, especially since he’s finally asked about Ayers, etc.
RightWinged on September 7, 2008 at 3:36 PM

It could just be Fox hype, but there’s some speculation out there that the next three OR segments might be worth watching.

Nichevo on September 7, 2008 at 3:45 PM

I hate to say it, but the ease with which he stated “my Muslim faith” is eery. Freudian, maybe… but then again if I understand Islam correctly, once you are a Muslim there is no getting out? Factually speaking of course.

Good catch, AP; it’s important not to be like our opponents.

He’s just trying to throw you off.

So you’re saying he disrespects local cultures and he’s an alcoholic.

;)

aikidoka on September 7, 2008 at 3:47 PM

Obama did say “My Muslim faith” did he not? And that statement may have stood if that lefty stooge Stephanopoulos would not have come to the rescue. What’s everybody getting a teary eyed about? That Obama admitted he was a Muslim? He said it, gaffe or not, he said it.

Let the lefties fight their own battles, we don’t have to help them out.

And what’s all this jabber about what an intellectual Obama is? This man couldn’t argue he’s way out of a wet paper bag. He’s lots of show and no intellectual heft at all, W. Bush is a GREAT speaker compared to Obama.

Maxx on September 7, 2008 at 3:47 PM

I just emailed to 100+ Told them to pass it on.

Perfectly edited. Out of context. And I could give two salamis.

$5 million is middle class

Don’t remember how many houses

100 years in Iraq

Economy is sound

Etc

Payback is great.

That’s what most people are pointing to…George made a save for Barack and he stunned and helped as soon as he realized what was said. The he edits it out just like the offending portions of his July 2d speech never made the transcript. This is a developing pattern.

McCain would not be nor would be expected to have extended the same courtesy. It is actually not a courtesy it is a detriment to them longterm. It also lends credence to the subliminal that “Barry can’t really handle the big leagues”.

Look this is the internet age, the July 2d thing is not some whack job black helicopter out of context conspiracy bug chasing.

Barry said flat out he wanted a civllian national security force. No

Exactly. It’s amazing how ignorant people are about Islam.

Taqiyah or Islamic Subterfuge Part 31

TheBigOldDog on September 7, 2008 at 3:50 PM

w he may well have been speaking of the alphabet soup FDR era on ‘roid or he may have been going Il Duce….

keeping the offending part of the speech out does not lend itself to guessing it was the “best case scenario” or “inartfully worded”.

sven10077 on September 7, 2008 at 3:50 PM

Its not even a gaffe, people. Get off of this or you become everything the nutroots characterize you to be. This is exactly the dumb sort of thing Steven Colbert will go after to make fun all of us. If Obama is a “secret Muslim,” then he’d have more sense than to accidentally admit it on national TV. Its not a freudian slip, its not anything. It is a foolish way of acknowledging that morons seem to think he is a Muslim.
