Return of the wimp factor?

In his acceptance speech at Invesco Field, Barack Obama insisted that Democratic presidents could keep America safe, but couldn’t come up with an example more recent than 45 years ago. While Obama invoked FDR and JFK, voters apparently began thinking of Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. The wimp factor has returned with a vengeance according to a new poll, and Democrats now find themselves back to their 2004 status on national security:
One of the most notable polling results at the time of the 2006 elections was that Democrats had closed the national-security gap versus Republicans who held a long and significant advantage in that area. That was short-lived.
Unfortunately for Democrats, the gap has reopened. Democrats are regaining the reputation with voters as wimps.
Greenberg, Quinlan, Rosner has just released a survey that indicates that voters perceive Republicans once again as far and away better on national security issues than Democrats.
Forty nine percent of those surveyed thought Republicans were better on national security while 35 percent thought Democrats better. When it came to combating terrorism, 48 percent thought Republicans superior to Democrats while 33 percent gave Democrats the advantage.
Why has this returned so suddenly? It’s not difficult to fathom. Democrats spent the two years following that election attempting to lose the war in Iraq, and most still haven’t acknowledged their error in doing so. Harry Reid, the Democratic leader of the Senate, declared the war lost from the chamber’s floor. Barack Obama only admitted a few days ago what the rest of the nation figured out last September — that the surge worked and we have all but won the Iraq war.
Obama has tried mightily to shift attention away from his blunder on the surge, but it hasn’t worked. He has demanded more troops in Afghanistan, as John McCain also has, without explaining why a surge would work in Afghanistan but didn’t in Iraq. His running mate couldn’t tell the difference between a brigade and a battalion three separate times in the two weeks since joining the ticket. Meanwhile, his Code Pink bundler, Jodie Davis, crashed the Republican convention and had to be forcefully removed on national television.
Most of the trouble comes from Obama himself. He announced during the July 2007 YouTube debate that he would meet with the leaders of terrorist-financing states like Iran and Venezuela “without preconditions”, an absurd statement his campaign has tried to walk back for months without success. Obama pledged to cut missile-defense and weapons systems as soon as he got elected. When Russia invaded Georgia, Obama couldn’t distinguish between victim and victimizer and demanded restraint from a nation attempting to defend its own territory.
With a record like this, no one should be surprised at all that voters see Democrats as wimps. When a candidate has to reach back five decades to find a President that understood national security, it speaks volumes about the direction of their party ever since.

I know a number of Michigan democrats who are voting for McCain because of illegal immigration.
Gov. Granholm(D)invited illegals to Michigan. Now they can’t get rid of them.
You can drive his truck, and you can wrestle with his dog, and his wife sometimes, steal his beer out of the fridge on the porch…but never but never get in the way of a job in Michigan.
These folks need jobs. And they blame the illegals and Granholm and taxes for there being no jobs. And Obama isn’t going to do squat about illegals…’cept encourage more.

The Republican’s whole campaign plan is to keep Palin from uttering any words not written for her by big-city speechwriter’s, Jim?

coldwarrior,
I believe you. McCain would be much tougher than Obama on illegal immigration and most people realize that.
But that’s irrelevant to a lot of people. They want an absolutist on the issue and McCain is not an absolutist.

His words were pretty close to “Ok, we’ll build the damn fence!”
It’s not like I don’t understand the wish to remain open bordered and welcoming, it is what we have always been. That being said 9/11 changed everything. Thanks for the kind words.

I The One took on Sarahbaracuda in one on one, she would beat his butt from one end of the court to the other. She wouldn’t be pulling any punches like the jokers that supposedly play a pick up game with the Messiah. I would pay money to watch that match and it would be the highest rated TV moment of the century!

I don’t remember Granholm inviting illegals up here, but they are everywhere. I recently met a lady who talked about the great job she had cleaning motel rooms at $8.00 an hour until the manager fired all the cleaners and replaced them with illegals. (Tell that to Huckabee who never met a man who lost a job to an illegal).
The unemployment in my area is pushing 10 percent, Meanwhile the local largest cheap store is packed with illegal alien customers especially certain nights. They have taken a huge chunk of construction/labor/landscaping jobs while the stream of non illegals fighting for retail/fast food jobs goes on. The elite forget the jobs being offered to illegals are no longer being advertised to the general public
McCain does not have an image here of being against illegal workers. Perhaps he should bring that up. Agricultural jobs he referred to are only a small fraction of the jobs stolen by illegals. If McCain distinguished between lettuce pickers, and road crews in his stump speeches he would do well in Michigan.
We can understand most Americans don;t live in farm country Farmers need migrants – legal or illegal. It is the other 80 percent of jobs that are now being reserved for outsiders that is killing us here.
Come on McCain, it is an opportunity to make a lot of friends. mcCain will make people believers if he acknowleges the lock out of American workers to certain job categories. Our local paper used to be filled with adds for those small jobs, landscape, general labor, food service and the last issue I bought had three half pages with truck driver school, telemarket, accountant, nurse and health worker. No entry jobs left

No, it wasn’t always open borders. All those legal immigrants didn’t stop at Ellis Island for the fun of it.

a good subject for Brry backers to try to attack is the nuance of being a medal winning naval aviator versus the honorable service of being a community organizer….will work *almost* as well as Barry saying “well uh uhm I thought about joining the military so I am uh sorta like John uhm McCain…”
yeah Barry sorta just like him baby….

Your right but what was happening at our southern and northern borders then? Serious question, because I don’t know. I guess both areas were as new as we were so folks stayed where they were. Somewhere in time we lost the desire to know who was in our country.
Cindy Munford on September 7, 2008 at 2:52 PM
But we don’t have that problem up here in the Upper Peninsula. If Granholm invited them north of the Bridge then they quickly discovered that there are no jobs up here to take away.
Thanks to Granholm, Stupak and the rest of the Dems the blockage of progress on all types of “resource-based” jobs has guaranteed that there won’t be any for a long time to come.
Yoop on September 7, 2008 at 3:00 PM
That’s the Democrats plan to deal with illegal immigration!
Ruin our economy and then Americans will have to go to Mexico to get jobs picking fruit!
Brilliant!

I live five miles south of the Michigan line, so I see what’s happening up there, even if I can’t vote about it. How much do you want to bet that the union bosses will be behind Granholm next election. They don’t give a rat’s arse for the workers in Michigan, any more than Granholm does. They support her because she’s a (D). They can’t see any farther than that. And they accuse Republicans of voting against self-interest.

Back to the wimp factor thing….I’d like to see an ad of Palin with her hunting rifle, and Obama with his..salad?
Who would you rather be lost in the woods with? Who would you rather be with in a dangerous survival-mode situation? Obama is the gatherer, Palin is the hunter.
nyrofan on September 7, 2008 at 5:13 PM
The voters are not stupid. Eventually, the obvious fact that the Democrats are wimps will be reflected in the polls.

The Dems were somehow NOT viewed as wimps on national security in recent elections?
Amazing.
