Rasmussen: Dead heat

posted at 9:46 am on September 7, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Rasmussen’s daily tracking poll shows John McCain and Barack Obama in a dead heat, with or without leaners, within 72 hours of the close of the convention.  Obama’s convention bounce has completely disappeared, and McCain’s bounce may not yet have peaked:

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Sunday, September 7, shows the race for the White House is tied.

In the first national polling results based entirely on interviews conducted after Sarah Palin’s acceptance speech, Barack Obama gets 46% of the vote and so does John McCain. When “leaners” are included, it’s all even at 48%.

This past Tuesday, Obama’s bounce peaked with the Democrat enjoying a six-percentage point advantage. Before the two conventions were held, Obama had consistently held a one or two point lead over McCain for most of August.

McCain continues to draw better among Republicans than Obama does among Democrats, and he’s taking more Democrats away, too.  He gets support from 89% of Republicans versus 81% of Democrats supporting Obama, and draws 15% of Democrats.  Obama’s edge among women decreased slightly from 7 points to 6, while McCain’s edge with men increased to 7 points from 3.

Obama’s bounce peaked on the Tuesday following the convention, when he rolled out to a six-point lead after two days of relative inactivity from the GOP during Hurricane Gustav.  McCain and Palin have not let the grass grow beneath their feet this weekend, and I’d predict that his bounce has not finished its trajectory yet.  By Tuesday or Wednesday, we should see the results of the convention in full.

Again, I suspect if McCain starts getting a little ahead in the polls, there might be some serious momentum, as people formerly shy about supporting McCain “come out of the closet” once it is seen to be a majority view.

McCain’s next words on immigration will either cement or soften the enthusiasm generated by adding Gov. Palin to the ticket.

Zogby has McCain/Palin up by 4%…

This will be a tough battle, no doubt about that. The Liberal media is a powerful asset to the Obama campaign, and should not be counted out yet. Hopefully, the MSM will continue to turn the stomachs of average Americans & die the slow and painful death they so richly deserve. The current situation going on with the “US magazine hit piece” is very encouraging. It would seem that most Americans are sick and tired of being lied to; sick and tired of Liberal rags shaping the news in an all out effort to have power over our thoughts and decisions.

McCain/Palin will need our help if they are to overcome such powerful weapons. Donate 5 dollars if nothing else; volunteer to work with grassroots efforts; man the phones. I admit, I’m late to the ticket. The choice of Sarah Palin did it for me.

Keemo on September 7, 2008 at 10:02 AM

With two months still to go, polls continue to mean very little.

That being said, the effect this latest poll will have on the Obamabots and the McCain/Palin haters will have deliciously entertaining results.

I am consumed by curiosity about the coming GOP strategy. Will it be a blitz of Ayers/Wright/Pfleger/Infanticide/Chicago Crook County ads? Or will it be a gentle and urgent reminder that Obama is just a recycled 1960s Marxist liberal? Or will they ignore The Truth and The Light and just talk about Palin and her son GI Joe?

The national head-to-head tracking polls are just fluff, I hate to say it.

Its not too early to start focusing on the Electoral College and the head-to-heads in critical battleground states.

Ohio, PA, Va, Fla, Colorado, the upper midwest, etc etc.

PC ends where the voting booth begins.

I was looking at Power Line this morning and there was Paul complaining about Palin’s experience. There was also mention of Charles Krauthammer not liking her pick.

These guys don’t much like Condi Rice either. I am beginning to wonder if this pick had been Jindal instead of Palin if we would hear some of these men on the right worrying about experience. I also read some stuff about Frum not being happy, but then Frum was the man who said that Harriet Miers could make all the right decisions on the Supreme Court and still not be good enough.

I expected the bellyaching from the left about Palin, but I would think that by now some of these good ol boy vetching on the right would have figured that Palin’s greatest strength is her freshness, he lack of ties to Washington.

I worried about how the lack of experience charge would hurt her, I also worried that the Democrats would make a mountain out of a molehill when it came to the firing of the trooper…but it seems to me that a lot of people are willing to look beyond all that.

I should hope to be half the man he is.

Sorry to be a wet blanket folks, but Bill Clinton was right when he said “it’s the economy, stupid!” With the US economy (and others) tanking, this election will be fought on two issues:- abortion and the economy. The abortion issue will be the decider, I feel.

OldEnglish on September 7, 2008 at 10:38 AM

I think most of the polls are skewed and do not show an honest assessment so as to create the appearance of a close race. When was the last time anyone was shown with a 15 or 20 point lead? Excluding those candidates with nobody running against them.

Cindy Munford on September 7, 2008 at 10:43 AM

Been going over all sorts of polls this morning, most are at least four days old up to a week or more old. Michigan shouldn’t even be in play for the Dems…Obama should be out front and strongly trending out front. Looks static and a bit of a back drift on the Obama side.

Wonder what is going on in Michigan?

Kwame Kilpatrick and the politics of corruption sort of puts Obama and Kilpatrick in the same bucket. That Obama endorsement/vote of confidence with Kwame…pure gold.

Good old whatzername…the governor…has done z-i-p for Michigan…except drive businesses away, drive jobs away. That resonates among the voters. Obama promises more of the same once you get past the glitter. That tax on businesses…the people of Michigan (those who have jobs or own businesses are going to embrace that concept…right?)

I’ll give Michiganders a lot of credit…they can see this stuff. The Ted Nugent/Cabella’s crowd loves Palin…loves her. From Jackson Conty in the south up to the top of the UP…lots of hunters, gun and bible clingers…not a lot of arugula eaters. [Traverse City has pretty much gone arugula.] Now, how to get these folks to make sure they are registered, and are going to be there on 4 November, ready to vote.

And Biden…his appeal to the average working class Joe…from Scranton, no less…not a lot of us working class Joe’s can afford hair plugs. He’s bugus as a 3-dollar bill. Worth a lot less, too. Not a lot of Biden appeal out in Michigan.

Real Clear politics has all the major polling, national and state by state…look at the numbers over periods of time.

We could just pull this thing off as a more than 51-49 vote.

coldwarrior on September 7, 2008 at 10:44 AM

“The abortion issue will be the decider, I feel.”

That is so far down the list of what Americans list as a decider, it barely registers.

Not to mention, the majority of Americans are at least moderately pro-life. So what little influence the issue has, should benefit Republicans.

And if anyone thinks that a couple of far-left lawyers are going to help our economy, then Obama-Biden is their ticket.

But most people who manage to vote on election day are brighter than that.

NoDonkey on September 7, 2008 at 10:45 AM

Remember:

“McCain and Obama dead even” in reality equals “McCain up by 5%”

The purpose of these polls is to manipulate the public, nothing else.

jgapinoy on September 7, 2008 at 10:50 AM

McCain HAS GOT TO start hammering the economy.

BO’s taxes (employment, investment, fuel) are going to hugely impact every single American family.

BO has NO reasonable or realistic energy policy. That will cost every American family.

contrast: Sarah’s farsighted act of negotiating for the natural gas pipeline will reap rewards for the American family within a few years.

AD: KEEP SHOWING BO’S LINE IN AN INTERVIEW THAT IT’S NOT A PROBLEM THAT GAS PRICES HAVE GONE UP, IN FACT THEY SHOULD GO HIGHER, BUT THEY JUST WENT UP TOO FAST !!!

The economy is going to be the deal-breaking issue.

GO SARAH !!!

I just moved from Michigan to Texas a few months back. Michigan will end up voting Democratic, like it has in the past. The Detroit mayor finally ended up pleading guilty and leaving office, so it shouldn’t have an impact on the election in two months.

The real swing states this time are Iowa, Colorado and New Mexico. The Dems will win all of them this time, and will win the election. The Dems will lose Ohio, Indiana and (probably) Virginia and the other states they lost in 04.

I’m thrilled by the poll numbers, but it’s time for some Allah pessimism.

We are going to hear a lot about Palin’s Alaska record in the next several weeks, and not all of it is beautiful. Yes, the MSM has almost totally failed to scrutinize BO in this manner. That said, Palin’s records as mayor, appointed official, and governor are legitimate areas of inquiry. Expect some luster to come off the narrative.

The Messiah could not remain the Messiah forever, and neither can Palin (or anyone else) sustain indefinitely the white hot glow she now has. I don’t think it will cool off altogether, but it can’t stay this incandescent.

So, let’s keep our heads about us. This fight has several more rounds to go. We’re going to land some blows, and also take some.

GM has announced record profits in all its major overseas production programs…Korea, Brazil, China…fuel efficient, multi-fuel and hybrid, nicely designed and looking cars…yet Stateside…GM is bleeding, bad.

So are a lot of other Michigan businesses.

What’s now holding them up?

All that Dem talk about increasing taxes on nasty old big business, no end in sight to Michigan’s Democrat-installed enviro laws and regulations, Michigan is not a business friendly state anymore.

Energy? Drill here, drill now resounds from the UP and all across the rest of Michigan.

Governor Granholm’s wonderful idea last year…welcoming illegal aliens and urging them to come to Michigan.

They are still here. Were supposed to help out the farmers. Now taking jobs away from everyone, in all sorts of trades and services. They are non-union, will work below scale, won’t ask for health insurance or a 401k plan and stuff…huge increase in illegals in Michigan over the past year.

And thst Primary thing…still resounds across the state. “Hillary shudda had it!” Have heard that a lot in the past couple weeks.

Refer to the 2004 electoral map and consider that all of the red states will go to McCain/Palin. The purple states are in play and among these are Ohio and Pennsyvania. Odds are that one of these will swing to McCain.

ManlyRash on September 7, 2008 at 12:12 PM

I predict it will be Friday before we know … By then things will have stabilized and positions will begin to be locked in, until the debates.

What no one seems to be talking about is the tremendous help Palin has given the McCain ticket by locking down the former red states. The campaign can now focus on the remaining purple states, concentrate their effort. Huge savings in money, time and effort.

tarpon on September 7, 2008 at 12:17 PM

John McCain stated that the main themes of his campaign will be cutting taxes, job growth, defeating Islamic terrorism, ending pork and energy independence. Hammering on these points and not getting lost in other issues is the key to winning. A clearly understood platform keeps the voters focused. The Contract With America swept Republicans to victory in 1994. John Kerry lost to George Bush because he was all over the map while Bush had one point — keeping us safe.

“the Rube Belt, all of Michigan except Detroit-Flint-Lansing-Ann Arbor and Traverse City….they love Palin”

Coldwarrior, I wouldn’t call most of Michigan rubes. But I’d add Kalamazoo to the cities you’re excluding.

Add Grand Rapids (2nd largest city in Michigan) and Holland to the list.

No, frebird, GR and Holland are conservative, so I’d add them to the towns that like Palin. Kalamazoo isn’t and neither is Battle Creek (but Portage, Kalamazoo’s neighbor right to the south, is conservative).
