Obama: I considered joining the military

Tom Maguire’s skeptical given that he’s conspicuously failed to mention it until now, but I’ll take Barry at his word simply because there’s no way to prove he’s lying — a point which didn’t give a moment’s pause to our nutroots betters in their hot pursuit of the shocking truth behind McCain’s cross-in-the-dirt story a few weeks ago. (The shocking truth: Two other POWs remember Maverick talking about it in the early 70s.) I trust Sullivan will be taking a breather from his 24-hour Palin baby watch to track down the facts behind this dubious, politically self-aggrandizing personal anecdote. As for the e-mails I’m getting pointing out that he couldn’t have registered for the selective service in 1979 because it wasn’t reinstated until 1980, yes, that’s true — he simply spaced on the date. His registration went through in September of the following year.

That’s the first clip. Below that you’ll find The One floating the argument that there is indeed a candidate trying to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in Iraq — and it ain’t him. Which, in fairness, earns him an extra smidgen of respect from me just for having the sheer balls to attempt it. Even Ace, who can pop out a 5,000-thousand-word rant effortlessly, is left well-nigh speechless at the thought of Captain Withdrawal accusing someone else of fumbling the ball out of bounds on the way to the end zone. A golden moment.

Update: “Vote for Barack Obama — It is only due to bad timing he didn’t get to kill livestock, cut off ears, ravage villages, blow up bodies, and behave in a fashion reminiscent of Jenjhis Khan.”

Update (Ed): I’m not terribly skeptical of this, for the simple reason that I did much the same thing as Obama.  I looked into enrolling in the Air Force ROTC in 1980, after graduating from high school and being unsure of what I wanted to do in college.  In fact, I had an offer for a non-scholarship position that I just needed to have my parents co-sign (I was 17), but in the end I decided against it.  The AFROTC was only being offered at a college 50 miles away from the one I attended, and the commute between the two discouraged me from going.  I regret that decision to this day; I think it would have been very beneficial to me in many ways.

I’m pretty sure that many people thought about doing the same thing at about the same time, and deciding against it.  I’m not going to judge Obama for not enlisting or pursuing the ROTC path.

The Big O’s problem is not that he may be “bending the community organizer’s staff”, sure take him at his word, it’s that he brings it up now?

What’s bad is that he’s showing how quickly he folds under pressure.

McCain leads Democrat Barack Obama by 50%-46% among registered voters, the Republican’s biggest advantage since January and a turnaround from the USA TODAY poll taken just before the convention opened in St. Paul. Then, he lagged by 7 percentage points.

The convention bounce has helped not only McCain but also attitudes toward Republican congressional candidates and the GOP in general.

Time for a GOP Contract With America to improve the economy and reform Washington.

There will be lots of new union jobs and opportunities for accountants, engineers and managers when we drill here, drill now, and pay less for energy. Nuclear plants also increase employment. Service jobs and housing prices increase when these folks spend some of their improved income.

Point out the many failures of the “most ethical congress ever” led by Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. List their other failed promises.

Keep asking for ANY evidence that Obama is 1) bipartisan, 2) qualified for an executive position, 3) not hiding associations with hard-left radical/terrorists and criminal friends.

It is time to destroy the Democrats in congress, by nationalizing congressional elections. Let Palin say things like “The Democrats in congress are corrupt or vote for corrupt leaders in congress, and it’s time to throw the bums out!”

I just watched part of Fox on Palin.
I’m pretty sure Geraldine Ferarro is not going to be invited to any more wine parties in the Hamptons.
hawkdriver on September 7, 2008 at 8:48 PM

Ferarro ends each day knowing that she’s true to herself. She was right about Obama before, and she’s right about Palin now. McCain has mentioned asking the best people to serve in his cabinet. Being a Maaaavvveerriiiccckkkkk isn’t just his campaign gimmick, it’s actually him. So Lieberman might be considered for some area that he’s qualified for. I hope that if Ferarro wants, that she is considered for something that she would be able to contribute.

We need to reward people who have demonstrated their integrity and of course their personal policy that is not in conflict with an administration – to positions of power where appropriate.

wise_man on September 7, 2008 at 9:46 PM

Capt. Ed, no one is taking issue with the fact that he didn’t serve, they are taking issue with his statement that he seriously considered serving but never said anything about it until today. The man who wrote two autobiographies about how angry he was in his youth towards this country and society but NEVER mentioned his burning urge to put on the uniform was going to serve in its military? Well, he WAS going to serve but conveniently there were no wars going on at the time. That must have been a bummer for a blood and guts and veins in the teeth kind of patriot like him. The absurdity of it all stuns me. They must be more shell shocked than I thought

And I went up there, I said, “Shrink, I want to kill. I mean, I wanna, I wanna kill. Kill. I wanna, I wanna see, I wanna see blood and gore and guts and veins in my teeth. Eat dead burnt bodies. I mean kill, Kill, KILL, KILL.” And I started jumpin up and down yelling, “KILL, KILL,” and he started jumpin up and down with me and we was both jumping up and down yelling, “KILL, KILL.” And the sargent came over, pinned a medal on me, sent me down the hall, said, “You’re our boy.”

I think MSNBC just raised the white flag to the blogosphere…..

Ed I wonder if their getting caught by NARN was one of the final nails?

They had to have been afraid you guys might dig and try to find identities of the screener…

In essence this action can only have happened for one of several reasons or a combination thereof.

1) the advertisers said “what the hell?’

2) the ratings tanked past their point of “what the hell” in the office

3) the polls are saying McCain’s got her and they looked at the crowds the GOP’s getting and decided to cut oosses to maintain access(Queeg is a vengeful bastard in their minds remember?)

4) The dynamic duo’s pissing match caused management to nuke both

5) the Bambi camp said “look the cheerleading ain’t helping newsies”

6) they are trying to minimize their exposure on Keef openly reading KOS on air…..

I dunno man this is huge…

the network had kept digging in behind keef….wow

sven10077 on September 7, 2008 at 9:47 PM

That cracks me up; “I didn’t serve -but I thought about it!”

Hey Barry, answer this: When you thought about serving, did you ever think about what it would feel like if you did and then some scumbag senator, with aspirations for the highest office in the land, consistantly voted for measures that would guarentee your defeat on the field of battle and, on top of that, put your life in mortal danger?

Ever think about how it would feel if you were wounded while serving and some scumbag senator couldn’t be bothered to visit you while you were in the hospital because he couldn’t squeeze a photo-op out of it?

Last but not least, ever wonder what it might feel like to see that same senator, who cast his vote against you time and again, couldn’t be bothered to visit you or your wounded brothers and sisters in arms, counts amongst his supporters a number of like minded scumbag pols who levy unfounded charges of war crimes against your fellow servicemen pick one of those scumbag pols as his vice-presidential runningmate?

Screw you Barry.

Here’s one ex-GI who doesn’t give a crap what you thought about doing back in the day and will never forget the impression you give through your words, actions, and associations in the present.

Obama’s comments on Iraq… No… just, NO!

Obama’s mind exists in another reality of some sort because what he spewed out was about the most ridiculous thing I ever heard regarding McCain of all people snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

Democrat Barack Obama says he would delay rescinding President Bush’s tax cuts on wealthy Americans if he becomes the next president and the economy is in a recession, suggesting such an increase would further hurt the economy.

Allahpundit, He could have tried to enlist but you cannot admit to using a controlled substance, and be accepted into the U.S. Armed Services. Not even with a waiver. Obama stated I smoked weed, I did a little Blow- that is Cocaine. You have to take a drug test, when you are being processed and there are random drug test, once you are inside the military. SO Obama could have TRIED to enlist but he wouldn’t have been accepted. Go to any of the Service sites online, Army, Navy, Marine, Air Force. They won’t take someone who admits to using Cocaine. Weed that is another story and requires a waiver. I am pretty sure on this. The Reason they won’t take someone who has admitted to using a controlled substance. WEAPONS, the Military won’t take a GAMBLE on a person, no matter what your MOS is in the Military, your are a solider, a troop, a marine first. That means training with a WEAPON with LIVE ammo. So what if Obama, thought about enlisting, he obviously didn’t look into the requirements, to get into the U.S. Military. Now if your argument is he could have lied about his drug use, he didn’t, he wrote about it in his memoir. My husband was a recruiter for the last 3 years of his time in the Army over 27 years. He stated emphatically to me. Obama could never have joined the Army. He was ineligible because of admitted hard substance use. There are REGULATIONS.

Dr Evil on September 7, 2008 at 9:58 PM

I really don’t know if a guy like this would consider military service, but reject the idea because there isn’t a war going on. Does Obama really impress you as someone who wants to see that sort of action?

Didn’t say a word about it in the two memoirs he authored, either, right?

I don’t know. I think this is a “See!? I’m patriotic too!!! Well I am!!!” Do they do internal polling at this point? I’d love to see what that looked like after the country got a look at Palin and McCain.

jnelchef on September 7, 2008 at 9:47 PM

Saved me some typing. Concur 100%.

There is nothing wrong with choosing not to serve, the military is not for everyone. But like in the military, wearing an award that you didn’t actually earn will cost one respect that they would probably never get back. Same goes for people who claim for obvious personal gain that they considered joining but there was nothing going on in the world in 1979 but wants to surrender in Iraq now on the cusp of total victory in every sense of the word.

I considered going to college, but I didn’t. Does that mean I can go to San Fran and talk down about the salt of the earth folks too?

I just watched the Fox special on Governor Palin with a registered Independent, who knew nothing of her before. He was VERY IMPRESSED and asked me many followup questions. He sees it as a choice between the same, old Democratic policies and something potentially different. Either was a change from Bush, he says, and since he’s not aligned with regular, old Democratic policies, it’s a no-brainer. Besides he says Sarah Palin has great legs. (whatever works, right?)

Moxie on September 7, 2008 at 10:33 PM

Executives at the channel’s parent company, NBC Universal, had high hopes for MSNBC’s coverage of the political conventions. Instead, the coverage frequently descended into on-air squabbles between the anchors, embarrassing some workers at NBC’s news division, and quite possibly alienating viewers. Although MSNBC nearly doubled its total audience compared with the 2004 conventions, its competitive position did not improve, as it remained in last place among the broadcast and cable news networks. In prime time, the channel averaged 2.2 million viewers during the Democratic convention and 1.7 million viewers during the Republican convention.”

pullingmyhairout on September 7, 2008 at 8:09 PM

He’s going for the Gore-Kerry vision of likeability – an almost palpable effort to be as nauseatingly arrogant as one can be. My favorite part is the little affectation where he interrupts whomever is asking a question before it’s finished, and starts his answer with either “Look…” or “Listen…”.

This attempt to control every sentence is a sign of weakness. He’s afraid to let anyone speak in clear air, I guess because he has so many weak points that he can’t let them be exposed.

That certainly explains a lot, and raises some interesting questions to boot. I guess suspicions of a coordinated attack on Sarah Palin just might be legitimate.

In aviation we have a couple like,

You only have too much fuel if you’re on fire.

In the Artillery it is,

You have only been firing to many rounds too fast if you have a cook off [the tube gets so hot that rounds are ignited before the lanyard is pulled].

pssst….Barack you got it all wrong man the Black Panthers are a paramilitary organization that does not qualify as ‘The Military’

There was no selective service between March 1975 and July 1980 so just how did he register when he graduated in 1979? And, when it started back up you, had to wait until the week after July 28th. You had six days.
So Barry would have just finished his first year at Occidental College when Carter re-instated the selective service. So just where did he sign up?
He intimates he signed up in Hawaii but he was in Los Angeles. Or was he?
He hasn’t released those transcripts. Occidental does not list him as Notable Alumni although they list every celebrity who attended. Even those whom they note: Did not graduate. But then they list him in an article on their website, written September 2, 2008 as class of 1983 but only attended from fall ‘79 to spring ‘81. When he transferred to Columbia, where no one can remember him.
WTF
You would think the next Leader Of The Socialist World would classify as Notable Alumni! I remember every moment of signing up for the draft from the drive downtown to the fat slob who took my application and classified me 1-A.

Don’t ya just love it when the media looses its grip on the Populist and looses control on the comments of the real people because of the internet the bonds of communication have been broken and the people have a pipe line that gets to the truth. The BS of politicians is like a high school rant. It really is funny how they think we are like the fifties. In order to be a good liar you need a long memory. Videos also help. I think we are on the way to clean up Congress. Think about it, it’s only about 485 souls that control us.

What does Obama want a cookie? How is his consideration of military service supposed to impress anyone?

Mike Honcho on September 7, 2008 at 11:40 PM

My favorite Murphy’s Law:

The battle always occurs at the edge of two adjoining maps! This happened to Me in Al Kut in 2003. *&@%#@! MAPS!

Obama was going to join the same airborne unit as Jimi Hendrix, but he lost the 8 track of Electric Ladyland, did some blow, got confused, and decided to become a community organizer instead.

profitsbeard on September 7, 2008 at 11:57 PM

He considered joining the military? Yeah, right. When I was young and got caught speeding, I always told the cop I wanted to be a cop. I’m sure he believed me, too.

I’m pretty sure I ran into the community organizer he switched with….an odd white guy with a preist’s collar who sounded like a really bad Vanilla Ice cover….

Since NADA Obama refuses to release his transcripts, there is no record of him. Who is Obama really?

This NADA nobody is playing Frank Abagnale’s “Catch Me If You Can” game into the White House Oval Office!

Yeah and I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express last night. Maybe I that qualifies me to be president.

NTropy on September 8, 2008 at 1:07 AM

Another site (Althouse) has a poll: “Do you think Barack Obama seriously considered joining the military?”

“Hell no” is winning about 6:1 over “no”, and 30:1 over “yes”
(so no leads yes, roughly 97-to-3).

It’s kind of fun to see a candidate so unqualified as he is to just about self-implode before our eyes, day in and day out – there’s at least one meaningful gaffe a day now, it seems.

“In God We Trust. Everybody else keep your hands where I can see them.”

SuperCool on September 8, 2008 at 1:53 AM

Mr Obama was asked by George Stephanopoulos of ABC’s “This Week” programme whether he’d ever thought about military service and replied: “You know, I actually did.

To consider military service is one thing, but to “actually” consider military service is another thing entirely

as in, “I actually considered tryng stuffed limpets with entrails but decided it was too contraire

electric-rascal on September 8, 2008 at 2:57 AM

Holy Crap was a pandering imbecile. Does he really think he can get away with this. What’s next. “I once thought about having a baby with Down’s Syndrome, but you know…”.

I bet the only mention of the world “miltary” in any of his Testiments (Old and New) also has the world “industrial complex” or “Junta” in the same sentence.

Wasn’t this guy admittedly heavily into cocaine and God knows what in his “late teenage years”? And we’re supposed to swallow that he was thinking about joining the military?

I was trained as 71Q, used as 71B and finally reclassified as 71C, so I know squat about artillery. So how do you avoid a cook off? Is there an actual temp sensor to observe or do you just allow X amount of time between rounds? BTW, 10th ADA, 32nd ADDCOM, Darmstadt, FRG, 72 to 75. Anyone else out there?

Two autobiographies and this is the first time he’s mentioned thinking about joining the military. Hmmmm?
