Obama: I considered joining the military

Tom Maguire’s skeptical given that he’s conspicuously failed to mention it until now, but I’ll take Barry at his word simply because there’s no way to prove he’s lying — a point which didn’t give a moment’s pause to our nutroots betters in their hot pursuit of the shocking truth behind McCain’s cross-in-the-dirt story a few weeks ago. (The shocking truth: Two other POWs remember Maverick talking about it in the early 70s.) I trust Sullivan will be taking a breather from his 24-hour Palin baby watch to track down the facts behind this dubious, politically self-aggrandizing personal anecdote. As for the e-mails I’m getting pointing out that he couldn’t have registered for the selective service in 1979 because it wasn’t reinstated until 1980, yes, that’s true — he simply spaced on the date. His registration went through in September of the following year.

That’s the first clip. Below that you’ll find The One floating the argument that there is indeed a candidate trying to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in Iraq — and it ain’t him. Which, in fairness, earns him an extra smidgen of respect from me just for having the sheer balls to attempt it. Even Ace, who can pop out a 5,000-thousand-word rant effortlessly, is left well-nigh speechless at the thought of Captain Withdrawal accusing someone else of fumbling the ball out of bounds on the way to the end zone. A golden moment.

Update: “Vote for Barack Obama — It is only due to bad timing he didn’t get to kill livestock, cut off ears, ravage villages, blow up bodies, and behave in a fashion reminiscent of Jenjhis Khan.”

Update (Ed): I’m not terribly skeptical of this, for the simple reason that I did much the same thing as Obama.  I looked into enrolling in the Air Force ROTC in 1980, after graduating from high school and being unsure of what I wanted to do in college.  In fact, I had an offer for a non-scholarship position that I just needed to have my parents co-sign (I was 17), but in the end I decided against it.  The AFROTC was only being offered at a college 50 miles away from the one I attended, and the commute between the two discouraged me from going.  I regret that decision to this day; I think it would have been very beneficial to me in many ways.

I’m pretty sure that many people thought about doing the same thing at about the same time, and deciding against it.  I’m not going to judge Obama for not enlisting or pursuing the ROTC path.

Maybe this was the military that Obambi was thinking of.

When Barry says he thought about joining the military I think it probably went like this.

While filling out his selective service card he thought, “holy crap! If they start the draft I might have to serve in the military.”

I think he meant to say that he was thinking about joining the Boy Scouts…..but he didn’t like their policy on Homosexual leaders.

Wow, he is a military war hero, we should line up to vote for him. I thought about joning but there was no war going on so I didn’t. Does that mean he would join now if he could. I mean there is a war now, and he could help offset the fact that only the por uneducated join the military because they have no other options. I guess that makes me an idiot, I joined durring the few months where Clinton did not have us in a undeclared nation building shoot fest.

Typical Libertard “I support the baby killers and child rapists, bring them home now.”

You know, the thing that makes all of this garbage he said such an incredibly obvious lie, was the folks he admired and the books he read.

I seriously doubt he would have read Saul Alinsky and said, “Oh yeah, I’m goin to join the “bourgeois” army.”

hawkdriver on September 7, 2008 at 8:57 PM

This seems like a dumb thing to say. It just begs for someone to mention that he would not be an optimal candidate for military service because he had a propensity for getting high at the time.

rw on September 7, 2008 at 8:07 PM

Back then, there were a lot of potheads in the military. However, in 1981 (the year I joined), the Armed Forces began its urinalysis program by whiz testing everyone. It’s a good thing that the USSR didn’t attack right about them because a lot of military members were forced to separate from the service and several units at several bases were force to halt operations due to being short-handed (mostly of security; the cops were notorious dope-smokers). However, the initiation of the random urinalysis program cleaned up the services dramatically.

“Ace: Barack Obama Questions McCain’s Patriotism: “The strange question is why John McCain insists on continuing to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory” in Iraq”

He should have been speechless as Obama is clearly questioning McCain’s judgment, not his patriotism. Something better is needed for this almost endless same-same, “back atcha” soup opera personality cult of a farce that this Presidential 2008 campaign has become.

Patriotism, patriotism, patriotism! I’m patriotic and you’re not! No, I am patriotic and you are not! I’m more patriotic than you! No, I’m more patriotic than you!

Afterward he joined a racists ant-American church and launched his political career at the home of an unrepentant terrorist who’s group blew up building and killed police officers. He’s got issues with putting his hand over his heart during the national anthem even when he’s on stage, and wearing flag lapel pins. Yup, no reason to doubt him one bit!

Ask John McCain how being fair and coming to the defense of Leftists worked out for him.

It’s probably true but big deal. I thought about going into the military too. I also thought about enrolling in clown school. I thought about going to the seminary. I thought about moving to Alaska. I thought about being a surgeon. You think alot about what you want to do “when you grow up”.

Most of us understand that there’s nothing special about all of this. But for the Obamamessiah it’s supposed to have some special meaning. Like, “hey, I can relate to the military ‘cuz I was thinking about joining it, once upon a time.” and “hey, I’m not whimp. I almost joined the Marines!” and “hey, trust my credentials on national security, ‘cuz I was thiiiiissss close to picking up a rifle in defense of my country.”

What a pathetic piece of flotsam. It would be funny if it weren’t so sad.

PackerBronco on September 7, 2008 at 9:19 PM

Heh-heh maybe Obama will try to nail down the women vote next by claiming that he was thiiiissss close to having a sex change operation.

I’m pretty sure that many people thought about doing the same thing at about the same time, and deciding against it. I’m not going to judge Obama for not enlisting or pursuing the ROTC path.

This isn’t about judgement although in 1982 I made the opposite choice. Hillary Clinton also has made the claim she was considering joining the military but (like Obama) never followed through. Here’s the thing he Obama didn’t join the military so why in the hell are we supposed to give him “credit” for thinking about joining when he never did? I’d say the long string of anti-military comments from Obama, Biden, and Democrats speak far louder than whatever Obama thought about doing.

Put another way, Obama also probably thought about going to medical school but that doesn’t mean he’s a doctor.

Did he actually say anything of substance, or was that all psychobabble?

Who is he kidding?

pullingmyhairout on September 7, 2008 at 8:12 PM

Are you board certified in psychobabble?

Well?

I didn’t think so. You should leave the science of psychobabble to a professional.

Barack Obama is an even more interesting and challenging patient than Hillary Clinton. While Hillary’s multiple personalities cross over her many multiple past heroic lives, as she related it to me when I had her under past life regression hypnosis anyway, such as her being straight shooting hard drinking Annie Oakley in her most recent past life and an heroic defender along with her next in command a General George S. Patton of the Alamo against Giant Vikings in the one before that, Barack has two very distinctive personalities at the same time right now in the present and in my sessions with him he goes back and forth between the two. He doesn’t seem to be able to make up his mind which he wants to be. I have named the one personality Homie Obama and the other Squire Obama.

Homie Obama is an angry Black man who found his soul mate in Michelle the angry hate America Black woman of his dreams and in Jeremiah Wright the God damn America and curse all things whitey firebrand mentor he had been searching for.

Squire Obama on the other hand is an upper class elitist white liberal in the John Kerry mode who really very much wanted to marry a rich white woman and only married Michelle instead as he needed to establish his Black cover and sought out Jeremiah Wright simply to gain his Black credentials or in the vernacular “creds”.

This is making treating him most difficult as it is most vexing to determine if he is coming or going, an upper class elitist white liberal very much in the mode of John Kerry or an angry ghetto Black man. Fortunately I am given to understand that someone who comments on this very board is something of an expert on what I call the Squire Obama persona. I believe his initials are JD, so I will endeavor to concentrate my future efforts on treating Homie Obama and hopefully Doctor JD can concentrate on Squire Obama.

At my advanced age and state of decomposition I can hardly be expected to treat both of Barak’s contradictory personalities and still have enough time to have a reasonable chance of making any significant progress treating Hillary which is pretty much a full time job in and of itself and likely to become even more so if her fantasy of Barack Obama being assassinated is not fulfilled before November and he actually becomes President.

Again, always leave psychobabble to a professional.

There are also lots of states where you don’t have to register by party. We don’t in Georgia and it’s pretty solidly Republican. The travesty comes in when the polling companies don’t consider that situation or the phony ACORN registrants when they weight the polls.

Is it in any of his TWO memoirs? Yes? No? Anybody know?

If it isn’t, it’s BS! A man under 50 who writes 2 books about his life has lots of pages to fill and in Obama’s case, relatively few major experiences with which to fill them. It would have made it into one of the books if for no other reason than to fill the pages.

I considered joining the French Foreign Legion yesterday. My intentions are so heroic and I didn’t have to bother with all that messy boot camp and guns stuff.

He’s going to expand on this in his third autobiography. Why he chose to serve his “community” as an organizer instead of his “country” as a member in the armed services.

In fairness to the man-child (love that) his target audience wouldn’t have been the kind of folks he would have wanted to admit that to if it were true.

I’m sure the military is grateful that you considered serving.

If you were in charge and the nation was attacked, I imagine that would you consider responding?

Todays news in not going over well at the Kos:

Remember those golden old days when all the smart people here were doing happy dances and ordering in their popcorn for the Palin speech and saying she would resign from the ticket?

well, the speech happened and now McCain is actually leading in some polls whereas Obama was leading in virtually every poll before both conventions were held.

Make note of that – BOTH conventions have already been held – AND the full Republican bounce is not yet reflected in the polls – that won’t come for a few days – and still McCaain is leading in some polls

so – yeah, the news is bad

Palin WAS a game changer -

she makes it very difficult for us to link McCain to Bush simply because McCain’s choosing her does not feel like something Bush would do – and, as silly as that is, that is how it looks to people out there

and linking McCain to Bush was our best bet

so now the playing field is even – or worse – we will probably be playing the underdog from here in

the real fight starts now

I bet they’re getting that sinking John Kerry feeling again.

Many of them will be spending the day in bed or watching Oprah or some such thing and never bother to vote.

ManlyRash on September 7, 2008 at 9:35 PM

The new Gallup is getting a lot of attention. I would say at the very least, McCain/Palin got a much bigger convention bounce. I hope we’re priming both of them non-stop for the debates. We could ice the bastards with two good opening nationally televised whoopasses.

(I worry about the moderators.)

God, what has happened to this country?

Vent ON
I don’t know MB4 maybe it’s b/c we have this political party whose elder statesman makes statements like “Saddam’s torture chambers have been put under new management, U.S. management.” all before any formal investigation was done, all in an eager effort to assume the worst about the U.S. Military. Maybe it’s because another senator of that same party compares U.S. Soldiers to Nazi Stormtroopers. Maybe it’s b/c donors to that party call the general in charge of the surge “General Betray-us” w/out ANY evidence of actual betrayal on his part other than his willingness to report GOOD news that is political inconvienent for them to hear and the leaders of that party say NOTHING in that general’s defense and REFUSE to condemn that ad.

Maybe it’s b/c the Senate majority leader of that party actively petitions for defeat in Iraq and calls the surge a failure before it’s even implemented. Maybe it’s because the 2004 Presidential candidate of that party refuses to meet w/ the interim President of Iraq during his campaign (refusing to meet with an ally whose success was vital for our own success and security!) and that candidate’s advisor refers to said interim President as a “puppet”, giving aid to our enemies.

Maybe b/c that party – the Democrat party – at every opportunity in the past 8 years has never put the country above it political interest. And every time it had a choice b/w making political hay out of setback and giving the President the benefit of the doubt and at least a modicum of support, it choose to collect whatever political advantage it could — and damn the consequences. And for every good thing, that happened had to be be-littled. Saddam captured? No big deal.

So that’s what happpened to the country. And y’know if Barak had the stones to simply say: “I misjudged the surge and it’s done great things”, it would do so much to heal this rift. But he can’t say that, can he? No, it wouldn’t be POLITICALLY prudent, right? So he and his veep has to continue this charade of saying “nope, the surge didn’t do anything, nope nothing at all and we were right all along when we said it wasn’t going to work.”

Would it kill him to give credit where credit is due? Apparently yes, and in the difference between the credit he should be giving and the credit he withholds, lies the lack of patriotism he is guilty of.

So screw him and the horse he rode in on. If he wants to whine about his patriotism being questioned then he should make it clear what he’s willing to give up in service of his country. The armed forces are willing to give up their lives. A politician should be willing to give up a few points in the polls and a few dollars from moveon.org. If he can’t do that, then we all know where his priorities lie don’t we? And they don’t lie with the country.

Vent OFF.

Obama is remarkably lame. Even Step goes “How’s that?” as if caught by surprise at the idiocy.

Obama is the gift that keeps on giving.
