Obama: I considered joining the military
posted at 8:01 pm on September 7, 2008 by Allahpundit
Tom Maguire’s skeptical given that he’s conspicuously failed to mention it until now, but I’ll take Barry at his word simply because there’s no way to prove he’s lying — a point which didn’t give a moment’s pause to our nutroots betters in their hot pursuit of the shocking truth behind McCain’s cross-in-the-dirt story a few weeks ago. (The shocking truth: Two other POWs remember Maverick talking about it in the early 70s.) I trust Sullivan will be taking a breather from his 24-hour Palin baby watch to track down the facts behind this dubious, politically self-aggrandizing personal anecdote. As for the e-mails I’m getting pointing out that he couldn’t have registered for the selective service in 1979 because it wasn’t reinstated until 1980, yes, that’s true — he simply spaced on the date. His registration went through in September of the following year.
That’s the first clip. Below that you’ll find The One floating the argument that there is indeed a candidate trying to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in Iraq — and it ain’t him. Which, in fairness, earns him an extra smidgen of respect from me just for having the sheer balls to attempt it. Even Ace, who can pop out a 5,000-thousand-word rant effortlessly, is left well-nigh speechless at the thought of Captain Withdrawal accusing someone else of fumbling the ball out of bounds on the way to the end zone. A golden moment.
Update: “Vote for Barack Obama — It is only due to bad timing he didn’t get to kill livestock, cut off ears, ravage villages, blow up bodies, and behave in a fashion reminiscent of Jenjhis Khan.”
Update (Ed): I’m not terribly skeptical of this, for the simple reason that I did much the same thing as Obama. I looked into enrolling in the Air Force ROTC in 1980, after graduating from high school and being unsure of what I wanted to do in college. In fact, I had an offer for a non-scholarship position that I just needed to have my parents co-sign (I was 17), but in the end I decided against it. The AFROTC was only being offered at a college 50 miles away from the one I attended, and the commute between the two discouraged me from going. I regret that decision to this day; I think it would have been very beneficial to me in many ways.
I’m pretty sure that many people thought about doing the same thing at about the same time, and deciding against it. I’m not going to judge Obama for not enlisting or pursuing the ROTC path.

I thought about being an astronaut, a major league baseball player and dating Cindy Crawford. Does that mean I’m qualified to be President.
Deeds, not words, Barack.
And kudos to Biden’s son Beau for joining the Del. Nat’l Guard in 2003 and now serving (as a JAG) in Iraq.

May I be the first to say…
BWAHAHAHAHAH
As a 32 year active duty Army Officer I have to say that is a freaking insult.
He opposed the war.
He lied about teh surge.
He lied about his vote to withhold funds from the military.
How would the media spin a comment by Governor Palin if she made a statement like that.
Not only is she an unfit mother, she’s a CHICKENHAWK wannabe.
God save us from the propaganda.
hawkdriver on September 7, 2008 at 8:07 PM
This seems like a dumb thing to say. It just begs for someone to mention that he would not be an optimal candidate for military service because he had a propensity for getting high at the time.

Kinda ‘funny’ how this comes out a few days after McCain’s bio on the national airwaves. That, and the fact that he’s the only one of the four with no connection whatsoever to the military, as far as we know.

Kind of hard to avoid when the question has the word “victory” in it. Kudes to Steph. to make 5 tries to get Zerobama to come back from his mental masturbation about Bush, Rumsfeld, and McCain going for a ride in a car to actually answer the question.

Some of us consider doing hard deeds; others actually do them.
I’m glad I served in the military. As much as a part of me would like for everybody to do their share, I’m glad that it’s an all-volunteer force. Not everybody is cut out for it – and honestly, I don’t think Obama could have hacked it.

Tne only military Obama thought about joining in 1979 was the Iranian Revolution.
There was “nothing going on”? I guess he missed the news about the Iranian hostage crisis in 1979.
I was commissioned as an officer in the US Army in 1978, and I can flat out tell you that was NOT a popular thing to do in thise days. The military was still suffering from the anti war sentiment of Vietnam, and wearing a uniform in public -airports, bus stations – drew more than a fair share of ridicule. Not something that a guy who went with the flow in those days would even think about. Looks like the “Biden effect” is taking ahold of Obama.
Jim M. on September 7, 2008 at 8:15 PM
Are you f**ing kidding me?
First, “uuuhhh… yeah, I thought about joining the military. I even followed the law and registered for selective service and …uhhh…had friends who talked about it… cause…uhhh… there were no major conflicts” is the stupidest answer I have ever heard. He might as well have said, “yeah, I even had GI Joe figures when I was a kid”.
Hell, it’s a pointless, softball question in the first place. None the less, I don’t think anyone could have screwed up an answer more. Why not simply say, “Sure. Who doesn’t admire our military full of heros?”
Next, what the hell was that Iraq answer? Not only did he reverse everything he’s ever said on the subject, but he also:
- tried to bundle McCain in with Rumsfeld, when McCain opposed Rumsfeld from the start, was his most vocal critic and was the first to call for his resignation
- McCain was among the first to say that it was a crap plan going in and initiated talk of the surge to fix the comedy of errors
and that is off the top of my head. Is there an even remotely true statement in that babbling mess of his?
This needs to go viral an into a McCain commercial immediately. I always knew this guy was an idiot, but those questions have convinced me that he is dumber than I could have ever imagined.
Damiano on September 7, 2008 at 8:15 PM

Does this remind anyone else of Hillary’s assertion that she tried to join the military?
The original story was that in Fayetteville, Arkansas, in 1975, Hillary walked into a local Marines recruiting office. The Marine recruiter looked at her, she recalled, and asked how old she was. Twenty-seven, she said. “He looked at me, and in those days that was before I learned how to wear contact lenses,” Sen. Clinton told a crowd of women veterans in 1994. “I had these really thick glasses on. He said, ‘How bad’s your eyesight?’ I said, ‘It’s pretty bad.’ …Finally said to me, he said, ‘You’re too old. You can’t see. And you’re a woman.…But maybe the dogs would take you.’” – James Joyner 4-03-08
Has about the same level of credibility!!
MochaLite on September 7, 2008 at 8:26 PM

Steph: Okay, next… can you spell potato?
Obama: Well, that depends on whether you are talking about Old English, American English or French. You see, it’s embarrassing that the one time I went to France for that photo op, I couldn’t say potato in French and ended up with french fries instead of a baked potato. My failure to study a foreign language like every other high school and college graduate in the US is all part of the failure of the Bush/ McCain policies on education. This is why we need strengthen teachers unions, so that kids like me who were smoking pot and snorting coke in school know how to ask were they can get drugs while they are visiting other countries.
Steph: Huh? Errr… you forgot to blame small towns in Alaska.

Clearly, Obama is a better liar than both of the Clintons!
The claim of considering the military in 1979/1980 has a draft card to back it up, so it is difficult to prove it false.
The long-winded drivel Obama gives when asked to define what victory in Iraq means to him never answers the question. It just throws some barbs at McCain by getting in front of the surge “parade” and claiming it is all about Obama’s ideas.
Obama’s claim that McCain seems resistant to what Bush and Maliki agree to is disingenuous: Obama would agree with Bush, then accuse McCain of offering another Bush administration. George StuffingEnvelopes does not seem smart enough (or objective enough) to point out that Obama is trying to have it both ways.

Obama graduated from high school in Hawaii and started his freshman year at southern California’s Occidental College in 1979. A year later before his sophomore year at Occidental, he registered for the Selective Service in September 1980, during the 4th year of Carter’s presidency and the 11th month of the Iran hostage crisis. His politics were modeled on those of his liberal, feminist, peacenik mother. So, his inspiration to consider enlisting in the military was … what, exactly?
Many young people look at their future and consider a military option. Some enlist for the education and others to straighten out their lives. We are deeply indebted to all who enlist. But I have a hard time believing the young Barack Obama, based on his own retrospective narrative and everything we know about his opinion of the military throughout his life, seriously considered enlisting, even if he could get a guaranteed assignment in Hawaii.
Terrie on September 7, 2008 at 8:41 PM
About a year ago I pulled into a Jiffy Lube to get my oil changed. When I was in the Army I was assigned to a Special Forces group, and I still had a unit patch in my car. The guy changes my oil and while I’m paying he asks if I’m SF. I say no, I was just in the unit. He tells me how he was thinking about joining the Marines so he could be Force Recon. I sorta nod along, rolling my eyes inside my head but not saying anything because I got some discount or whatever. Then he proceeded to explain how he WANTED to join but he just can’t while that evil BOOOOOOOOOOOSH is president. I told him Bush wasn’t barring anyone from enlisting and I don’t remember what else he said because I was completely tuning him out by that point. I felt sort of like spitting in his stupid face, but I figured someone so pathetic they need to brag about thinking about joining the military wasn’t worth the saliva. I don’t go to Jiffy Lube anymore.
Some of us actually DO these things, Barry. Don’t act all tough guy because you THOUGHT about MAYBE joining (or at least claim you did). What a loser.
