MS-NBC dropping Olbermann, Matthews? Update: NYT confirms they’re out as election-coverage anchors

No details on this yet, but Drudge has a headline up stating that MS-NBC has dumped both Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews from its “anchor chair”. David Gregory will take over the political duties and apparently also the anchor spot, at least if Drudge has this correct.
If this is true, what happened? Olbermann has been an embarrassment for years, and Matthews has hardly hidden his “thrill up his leg” for Barack Obama for the last few months. Did NBC finally just get tired of these two credibility killers?
Or did someone at General Electric read this post?
Update: The Drudge headline says NBC’s dropping them from the anchor chair, not just for the debates. Again, we’ll have to wait to see what NBC announces, but from that Drudge note, it sounds like they’re out altogether.
Update II: Here’s what Drudge says:
MSNBC drops Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews from anchor chair… David Gregory will anchor news coverage of the coming debates and election night…. Developing…
Granted, they could just have decided to drop O & M from debates and election night, but doesn’t that amount to a tacit admission that the two have no credibility? Aren’t those the two main events for political anchors, and if they can’t handle that, why would MS-NBC trust them with any kind of political reporting? Why keep them on the air after emasculating them like that?
Update III: Via William Amos, the New York Times confirms:
MSNBC tried a bold experiment this year by putting two politically incendiary hosts, Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews, in the anchor chair to lead the cable news channel’s coverage of the election.
That experiment appears to be over.
After months of accusations of political bias and simmering animosity between MSNBC and its parent network NBC, the channel decided over the weekend that the NBC News correspondent and MSNBC host David Gregory would anchor news coverage of the coming debates and election night. Mr. Olbermann and Mr. Matthews will remain as analysts during the coverage.
The change — which comes in the home stretch of the long election cycle — is a direct result of tensions associated with the channel’s perceived shift to the political left.
NBC finally had enough during the conventions, according to the Times. The chant of “NBC, NBC” during the Republican convention didn’t help. It does look like Olby gets to keep his news program … for now.
Update IV: Jazz Shaw wonders whether MS-NBC overreacted in an interesting and thought-provoking piece at TMV. I’d say that the mistake MS-NBC made was in assigning these two the anchor duties for election coverage, knowing their very obvious biases. Both of them have only marginal credibility now even as analysts; they’ve become hacks for Obama so blatant that even the most Kool-Aid-ridden viewer acknowledges that. Under those circumstances, nothing they say has any more value than a statement from the campaign’s press office — and unfortunately, Olbermann frequently goes where even the campaign dares not tread.

This announcement makes a “tingle run up my leg”, to quote someone who once said that. He-He.
Serves them both “right”. “Good riddens to bad rubish”.
Thank you MSNBC!

It wasn’t bad, unless you looked at the corresponding fluff piece they did on Bambi. The entire piece was nothing but praise of how much he has personified the American dream. They even made Wright sound good as they fluffed on past him joining the church. No Ayres, passing mention of Rezco being a separate issue entirely.
The only thing EXPOSED was the raging hard-on CNN has for Obama and exactly how far in the tank they are.
Related observation- Is it just me or has CNN seemed to have sunken lower than MSNBC in recent weeks while MSNBC seems to have made a concerted effort to appear slightly less revolting than vomiting after eating crap.

Phil Griffin, the head of that great disgrace MSNBC…is a moron.
He decides to make MSNBC a Conservative bashing tabloid and when it continues to fail, he hides behind the weak argument of “ratings”.
Hey Phillip, listen up, make a decision. Do you want to be the DailyKOS, complete with the crazy eyed, nut-bag operator, or do you want to compete in the NEWS business?
What a weak pathetic man to excuse his bad judgment behind such shallow excuses.
Are there no real men amongst liberals?

bookman on September 7, 2008 at 10:16 PM
No that seems fair. Bill O’Reilly is a political pundit doesn’t anchor debates or election night coverage because we know where O’Reilly stands on issues. MSNBC should have never let Olbermann and Matthews do primary night coverage to begin with.

What anchor duties were they doing? I agree with the others who say this isn’t as big a deal as it seems. They’re just going back to their respective shows while MSNBC tries to have a regular news staff that’s “objective” (ha).
Besides, if this were true, Olby would’ve called up his troops on the lefty blogs and demand a riot.
All the leftist blogs are posting their usual nonsense…

Gregory is not an unbiased observer… a bait and switch…but really Olberman and Matthews just got so emotionally involved that it was a parady of SNL.
Think ratings might have something to do with all this? Follow the money. All of the players were especially dour lately…Andrea Mitchel looked like her dog died everytime she was on the air since Palin came on board.
If things don’t start to improve now the next step would be targeting the advertisers…

According to the Times article: But as the past two weeks have shown, that success has a downside. When the vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin lamented media bias during her speech, attendees of the Republican convention loudly chanted “NBC.”
If this is all Sarah Palin accomplishes (doubtful), it will have been a monumental coup d ‘etat against the fourth estate? She’s already kicking ass and taking names. Maybe she can put Olby and Chrissy’s pelts up in her WH office.

Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews being dropped? McCain gaining a 10 point lead over Obama among likely voters? Obama having a serious gaffe/lie problem in public and no one who matters is giving “The One” a pass this time? The Dems embarrassed because of the Flag? Oil at its lowest price since April? Leftist smears against a Republican candidate getting rebuffed by Democrats? Tree huggers made to look like idiots? Morrisey posting a review of Mama Mia?
