McCain ad: “Temple”

posted at 9:12 am on September 7, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

John McCain’s latest ad attempts to leverage the Greek temple from Barack Obama’s Invesco Field acceptance speech while tying him to the rest of his party as “more of the same”. The spot, called “Temple”, hammers the meta themes of higher taxes, more spending, and underscores their definition of Obama as a doctrinaire liberal rather than a post-partisan with new ideas on governance:

Expect more exploration of this theme as the general election proceeds. Obama likes to claim that he can heal the partisan divide, but he has no track record at any level of being anything more than what Power Line describes: a go-along, get-along careerist who works within the Democratic machine.  This answers the silly McSame theme from the Democrats, who claim that McCain voted with his party 90% of the time (actually 88%) during the Bush administration.  Obama voted with his party 97% of the time.

Team McCain needs a parallel theme to this, because while this spot is effective, it may be a little too subtle.  New spots should demand an answer to this question: What has Barack Obama ever accomplished, as a reformer and as a “post-partisan”?  With Sarah Palin on the ticket, John McCain can answer both questions with solid track records.  Obama, on the other hand, can only point to some nice speeches he gave.

At the end of the day the only difference between Cuomo’s speech in 1984, and Barry’s speech in Denver is about 37 minutes of breaking his shoulder patting himself on the back and a laundry list of bribes. The thing is that Cuomo was a keynote speaker. “Change”.

How about this for an ad: a montage of the dem congress

and then Pelosi calling him the savior of our party

Something like that could work.

“Karl Rove, you magnificent bastard”

Say “hello!” to Steve Schmidt…in the past few months he has taken Rove’s book a few chapters farther…and has his own “book” in the works.

The proximity for the Palin choice and announcement, Labor Day weekend, the Bristol announcement…sorry, Gustav was not pre-ordained…but making sure everyone took off that first day of the convention…closing down…heading to the Gulf, putting distance between Bush and McCain while not putting distance…gee, we got this impending disaster coming, gotta go work on it…all Steve Schmidt…designed to throw the Obamatrons in a tizzy, the press too. [Confound and confuse the opposition, young grasshopper.]

Getting the religious right and evangelicals to publicly endorse, embrace Palin [and by extension, Mccain] and forgive the sinner so to speak with regard Bristol…making anyone who would condemn the pending birth of a child look, well, evil. Pure Steve Schmidt.

Play to one’s strength’s…go after the opponent’s weakness by letting the opponent make mistakes…draw them out, let them show their hand, or their arrogance…then cut them off. Move on to next target. Pure Steve Schmidt.

Bring the lemons (and the tequila) this is going to be a wild ride, but an upward bound campaign.

sven10077 on September 7, 2008 at 9:19 AM

To quote Spengler…

Senator Barack Obama’s acceptance speech last week seemed vastly different from the stands of this city’s Invesco Stadium than it did to the 40 million who saw it on television. Melancholy hung like thick smog over the reserved seats where I sat with Democratic Party staffers. The crowd, of course, cheered mechanically at the tag lines, flourished placards, and even rose for the obligatory wave around the stadium. But its mood was sour. The air carried the acrid smell of defeat, and the crowd took shallow breaths. Even the appearance of R&B great Stevie Wonder failed to get the blood pumping.

The speech itself dragged on for three-quarters of an hour. As David S Broder wrote in the Washington Post: “[Obama's] recital of a long list of domestic promises could have been delivered by any Democratic nominee from Walter Mondale to John Kerry. There was no theme music to the speech and really no phrase or sentence that is likely to linger in the memory of any listener. The thing I never expected did in fact occur: Al Gore, the famously wooden former vice president, gave a more lively and convincing speech than Obama did.”

On television, Obama’s spectacle might have looked like The Ten Commandments, but inside the stadium it felt like Night of the Living Dead. The longer the candidate spoke, and the more money he promised to spend on alternative energy, preschool education, universal health care, and other components of the Democratic pinata, the lower the party professionals slouched into their seats. The professionals I sat with were Hillary Clinton people, to be sure, and had reason to sulk, for an Obama victory might do them little good in any event.

Nahanni on September 7, 2008 at 9:35 AM

It looks as if the wheels are coming off the Obama’s garbage truck.

grapeknutz on September 7, 2008 at 9:37 AM

What have the Democrats done in the last two years but harass George Bush? That might be fun for the partisan Democrats, but that is not why most people elect representatives to office. I think that McCain and Republicans in general should run against not only Obama, but Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid as well. Their record sucks.

This ad tells me McCain knows he is going to win and now he is going for the coattails.

I was thinking about McCain’s and Obama’s speeches yesterday. McCain did not give a lot of policy proposals, but he spent a long time making the case that whatever he decides to do, he can get it done. Obama gave a laundry list of policy proposals, but no indication that he had the ability to get any of them done. I think the McCain camp ses it the same way. Obama will be at the mercy of an ultra-liberal, ultra-partisan Congressional leadership. And if he wants to tie McCain to Bush, then McCain has every right to tie him to the 9% Congress.

Great ad. And notice it doesn’t include any black Congressmen or Nancy Pelosi, so it can’t be attacked as racist or sexist. I love the inclusion of Chris Dodd and Byron Dorgan, two of the Countrywide Six, and Chuck Schumer, who everyone outside of New York hates.

Besides that being a universally shared American experience, the other side of the coin is minted: there ain’t no gratitude when the gifts are all based on expectations of entitlement.

Advertisements that announce “you deserve” make me sick, absolute disgust and aversion of the product. The DNC are selling everyone a pie in the sky that’s only filled with four and twenty black birds. Obama’s in the counting house, counting out his money. Michelle is in the kitchen eating bread and honey, Nancy’s in the garden hanging out the clothes, along came a blackbird and snipped off her nose.

Here’s another laughable scene: the mainstream media engaging in a serious, deliberate analysis of whether or not they are biased — and coming, naturally, to the conclusion that they are not — when every other ordinary human being on the planet knows that they are. LoL!

They have done no serious reporting on Obama since he started running, what – 20 months ago?, and it has been left up to the “non-professionals” to reveal all sorts of skeletons in his closet. But now, they assure us, it is necessary and property, (and their duty, Oh Lord!) to investigate and report on the 22 year-old DUI of Palin’s husband! Go get ‘em, boys!

The irony, which also makes them look ridiculous, is that Palin is so far squeeky clean, and Obama looks like a prevaricating, insecure, and dishonest narcissist.

I’ve seen a couple variations on this ad in the last few days and agree it’s a good one. I hope they do flesh it out a bit by reminding people what all these angry white dudes do and by making it crystal clear that Obama will unleash these morons on the rest of us. A suggestion: start showing how long some of these guys have been in Congress. A nice picture of John Dingell with his tenure shown graphically, or Robert Byrd, would really undercut the “Change You Can Believe In” crap.

If the Obama campaign was interested in telling the truth, their slogan would be “Change Back to Things You Stopped Believing 28 Years Ago.”

“In order for Communism to “succeed”, freedom, liberty, individualism, and economic srength must first be eradicated from the landscape.

I suspect it is especially effective against the left, as they take themselves so seriously. Most on the right can laugh at themselves, which makes ridicule much less effective a tactic.

Bob's Kid on September 7, 2008 at 10:09 AM

Team McCain needs a parallel theme to this, because while this spot is effective, it may be a little too subtle. New spots should demand an answer to this question: What has Barack Obama ever accomplished, as a reformer and as a “post-partisan”?

Excellent point. This IS the kind of message that needs to get out there more. But I think the “subtlety” of the ad is intentional, so as not to have McCain appear too “attack-ish” in a negative way.

It’s a fine line…

JetBoy on September 7, 2008 at 10:13 AM

Mynuet on September 7, 2008 at 10:16 AM

I think the real strength of the ad is that it helps to demolish Obama’s claim that McCain is just more of the same. The reality is that Obama is just more of the same socialism that’s already destroying this country, and the ad does a good job putting that into “kitchen table” terms that every voter can understand.

eyedoc on September 7, 2008 at 10:16 AM

I think the attack on the word “Liberal” is a mistake. People like to think they are liberal. Conservatives like to think they are the true liberals in the sophisticated European sense that implies being for freedom. The word implies a generosity of spirit that it is dangerous to run against. Obama is not a Liberal. He and his backers are Leftists, Extremists, even Totalitarians but not Liberals.

The McCain campaign would be well served if they made a big public display of “reclaiming an honorable word” from the Democrats. Republicans should start focusing attacks on Obama and the “Left Wing Extremists.”

FOXNEWSSUNDAY

Juan Williams is the rude chiquaqua allowed to bark and snap without rein. NO ONE interrupts Juan’s time share, yet everyone allows Juan to interrupt their own.

Chris Wallace bends over backwards to overcompensate leaving conservatives shy on the “fair and balanced” scale of time and pressure applied on the show. PC cuts both ways in ratings. FOX obviously is set to err on the side of caution at all times by overcompensation, taxing the loyal audience to empower the opposition.

If George Stephanopoulos were to reschedule his hour to follow FNS, then ABC would enjoy the audience both from Fox and from the late Tim Russert. That would be the final nail in the NBC news coffin. Plus, I’d have my cake and eat it too.

Well Alaska is next to Russia. – crr6 on September 7, 2008 at 11:07 AM

Closer to Russia, I believe, than Cuba is to Florida.

Alaska is the first line of defense in our missile interceptor system. The 49th Missile Defense Battalion of the Alaska National Guard is the unit that protects the entire nation from ballistic missile attacks. It’s on permanent active duty, unlike other Guard units.

As governor of Alaska, Palin is briefed on highly classified military issues, homeland security, and counterterrorism. Her exposure to classified material may rival even Biden’s.

She’s also the commander in chief of the Alaska State Defense Force (ASDF), a federally recognized militia incorporated into Homeland Security’s counterterrorism plans.

Palin is privy to military and intelligence secrets that are vital to the entire country’s defense. Given Alaska’s proximity to Russia, she may have security clearances we don’t even know about.

According to the Washington Post, she first met with McCain in February, but nobody ever found out. This is a woman used to keeping secrets.

As C-in-C of the Alaska National Guard, she traveled to Kuwait to check on Alaska’s troops deployed in the war zone shortly after her election and involved herself in planning for their well-being.

Governor Palin, at the request of Governor Jindal, sent the Alaska Air National Guard’s 176th Wing with a C-17, and two Pavehawk search and rescue helicopters, with crews and support, to Louisiana. No waiting for permission, nor saying “it’s above my pay grade,” no “orders” from the Pentagon or FEMA or the White House.

Oh, and she also negotiated with Canada for the construction of the pipeline that Joe Biden voted against 30 years ago.

On all these issues, she has way more experience than either Biden or Obama.

Schmidt is doing well but they aren’t morphing the message here quick enough to bring people along to the new concerned thoughts about Obama they want to be told more about. Take them on a journey of discovery about Barack’s vacant record now. Gov Palin was taking voters there and Schmidt he needs to back up what she said about Obama’s non-leadership compared to her maverickness.

So I agree the end message needs change now to contrast with the Palin smears. Maybe… “Not ready to lead…because he has never led.”

Then later maybe… “McCain/Palin: Mavericks…Leaders” “Obama/Biden: Stale Liberal Idea Followers”

Here’s a thought:

Do Obama’s “devoted followers” know they follow not a leader but simply a “devoted follower of other leaders?” Tell em about it. Wake them from the trance.

Seriously. The next 60 days is literally about deprogramming a small portion of Obama cult members. You can tell with the reaction to Palin that they are still loyal to the cult and will blindly lash out at outsiders who threaten the to upstage or expose the leader.

Someone tell Schmidt to study cult deprogramming and hire a smart deprogrammer and the GOP can win the election using that understanding. Get one that knows the election and can backtrack the Obama message to see where they got sold on the cult and carefully unhook their brains to where they don’t close ranks and resist to the death.

Nah, the same voice talent has been used before.

I wish they would do better with the “higher taxes” thing. To the casual observer, it’s easily dismissed or discarded since Obama promised lower taxes to 95% of people. Yeah, I know it’s a farce, but the average person does not. The slightly better than average goes to any fact check site or media outlet and hears them call it false.

Go after taxes, by all means, but they need to define the argument.

Something on the order of:

“Obama want’s to send you $1000 by taxing it out of your paycheck, cutting back your job or shipping your company overseas.”

“What would you rather have? A job or a regular paycheck”

It looks as if the wheels are coming off the Obama’s garbage truck.

Good thing it isn’t the bus- you’d want to get all those people out from under there first.

Spot on.

I am on the fence on this, but I’ve noticed how Obama is now aiming for Palin rather than McCain — saying that she’s more like Bush than McCain is. There should be some ad trying to paint Obama as a coward for feeling the need to go after the No. 2 rather than the top dog.

cool effects with the temple. i like it. but the message needs more meat.

“Obama likes to claim that he can heal the partisan divide”

He will heal it the same way Lenin and Stalin did.

Conservative Voice on September 7, 2008 at 3:50 PM

“Obama voted with his party 97% of the time.”

Did he vote “present” the rest of the time?

SKYFOX on September 7, 2008 at 4:44 PM

I would like to see an ad that is highlights from Obama’s I-hate-America Berlin speech. Then end it with McCain shaking his head in disgust. If there is anything Americans hate, it is I-hate-America, Carter-esque speech.
