Anchorage Daily News editorial: Hey, you know who’s been a pretty darned effective governor?

One of the more effusive back-handed compliments I’ve ever read, from a paper that’s well aware of her political faults. They’re not calling her a lightweight exactly, but it’s clear they think her interest in the nuts and bolts of policy is, let us say, insufficiently nuanced.
Which makes their conclusion that she’d be a dynamite VP all the more surprising.
Gov. Palin is not the kind of leader who gets bogged down in minutia and works 100-hours a week. Instead, she uses her charisma and a simple, clear vision to mobilize mass support for her agenda, then leaves the details and heavy lifting to others…
As governor, she has focused almost exclusively on a handful of high-priority issues — ethics, oil tax reform and state incentives for building a natural gas pipeline. And she has had dramatic success. With Gov. Palin leading the way, the Legislature passed strong legislation on all three fronts. On two of those issues, she had to take on Alaska’s previously all-powerful oil industry. Twice she easily defeated them…
One big surprise about Palin’s term as governor: She has been thoroughly bipartisan. Her most reliable supporters on her big three accomplishments have been Democrats. The partisan side that Palin showed in her acceptance speech Thursday is something Alaskans haven’t seen in her time as governor.
Earlier this year, Palin told a cable news interviewer that somebody is going to have to tell her “what it is exactly that the VP does.” In some ways, the vice president’s job is a perfect fit for her. She wouldn’t have to run the country. She could focus on a handful of high-profile issues, inspire people with her passion and star power, and try to accomplish a few great things.
It’s a perfect fit, that is, so long as she doesn’t actually have to step in for McCain. The left will seize on this and the detail about her “fearless sense of righteousness” to compare her to Bush, but read it yourself and see if it doesn’t call to mind a different “lightweight” Republican president. If she wins — and no matter what Gallup says, given the electoral vote projections, that’s still a mighty shaky if — then Palinmania could be a huge asset in galvanizing popular support for McCain’s energy policy. Maverick’s mama didn’t raise no dummy.
Exit question: Who’ll be feeling more pressure during the ABC interview later this week, Palin or Charlie Gibson? If you thought the left was hard on him and Stephanopoulos for having the stones to ask Obama about William Ayers, wait and see what he gets if she comes through with flying colors.

Yeah, it’s called leadership and being able to delegate…

If. Her first interview is, what I imagine, what it’s like to send your kid to school for the first time. I’m worried for her.

Anyone see what Drudge has up now?:
“NYT PREPARES TO FRONT EXPOSE ON PALIN’S BABY… DEVELOPING…”
What does this mean? Trig is not Sarah’s baby?
BJ on September 7, 2008 at 7:21 PM
She’ll be fine…
she has something more valuable than gold and twice as precious…authentic kindness and a drive to serve her people as best she can.
She’ll never say “my mongol ancestry” even if trying to do a triple lindy to land behind, around, and infront of McCain on the internet noise machine all at once.
Sarah’s got class

First question from Gibson : Did you or anyone in your family ever used recreational drugs?
Second question: Why don’t you or your seventeen year-old daughter believe in birth control? And do you plan to have any more babies while in office?
Third question: Name all the world leaders you have met and all the ones you haven’t.
Fourth question: Can you spell potatoe?

I am *in love* with a press that is more concerned with Trig Palin than William Ayers…..

sven10077 on September 7, 2008 at 7:27 PM
The left has been pushing the idea that Sarah Palin’s family gives the press the right to go after her on teen pregnancy. Im sure this is more about birthcontrol and teen pregnancy than anything else
William Amos on September 7, 2008 at 7:28 PM
By “bipartisan”, the media means “giving in to your Demcorat superiors”. The media all all over themselves trying to smear Palin. The NYTimes probably has interviewers with every nut in Alaska who will swear they’re the babydaddy.

I’m reaching back and patting myself on the back today.
I predicted that Sarah’s first three interviews would be:
Greta

an up close and personal with Charlie at GMA
I got the order wrong, but give me time. the other two will materialize shortly.
DrW on September 7, 2008 at 7:30 PM
She debated a former governor and a state legislator for an hour on Alaskan TV. She is used to cameras and seems to have a strong sense of self. I have no worries.
There might be a problem with Chris Matthews when he starts one of his screaming fits like he did with Michelle Malkin. He kept asking “Did Kerry shoot himself: yes or no?” and would not let her speak. Given that Kerry was never shot in Vietnam, it is kind of hard to pick Yes or No and be informative.
If he tried that crap with Sarah, I am afraid she might might go all Zell Miller on his ass.

Unless President McCain were to die immediately or pretty soon after inauguration (knocking on wooden head, God forbid) I am pretty sure that she would be supported by a cabinet and agenda already laid out. All this “heartbeat away from the Presidency” is fast going into the most annoying phrase list. Right after global warming. If Jimmy Carter can be president, anyone can.

Alright, Drudge has some sort of in the works headline that they are preparing a “front” on Governor Palin’s baby!!!!!! What don’t these morons get???? We don’t care! She is running for V.P. of the USA!!!!!! The citizens of this nation need to rise up and tell these liberal, morons that the people of this nation are sick and tired of their elitist ways. WE DON’T CARE!!!! We want reform and we want our country back. This will backfire in the libs faces tremendously. I have had enough. Who do they think they are??? Trying to influence the outcome of the election. I believe this: WHATEVER THEY DO TO GOVERNOR SARAH PALIN, THEY DO TO ALL WOMEN.

As near as I can tell, they’re claiming Governor Palin’s greatest weakness is that she’s a lot like President Reagan.
I suppose that might be scary to some people. Like those running against her and trying to smear her in the press.

Ronald (Ronaldus Magunus) Reagan governed in this kind of Chief Executive style. Mrs. Palin is better suited for the Presidency than AP comprehends.
In contrast, Obama’s process of thinking out loud leads to confusion when subordinates do not get clear direction from the Obama’s self-discovery through verbal diarrhea.

That appears to be today’s talking point, I think they will start talking about it and I think it will be from an energy independence angle. The fact is that is the U.S. goes after it’s own resources it slashes the trade deficit, creates great paying jobs that cannot be outsourced, and helps the dollar. That, added to the jobs seeking renewable energy sources, could put us in really good shape. I know I sound Pollyanna but I think this is our next big evolution in the business sector.
Cindy Munford on September 7, 2008 at 7:51 PM
The difference is HOW you rate the priorities. In Gov. Palin, it is the State of Alaska (i.e., its people) first, Gov. Palin second or third.
And which is one thing the Democrats will never figure out. If it is not for more power grab, you might as well talk Swedish Chef to them.

I like Palin and I hope she does well in her invterview, but I have my doubts that anyone can really change Washington. I know Bush tried to reform Social Security and that did not work. That anyone could consider this even remotely to be a criticism demonstrates that the same people do not have the slightest comprehension of what it is a Chief Executive does.
Look at anyone from Mayors to CEOs to Presidents. Someone’s effectiveness is directly proportional to their aptitude in precisely these things… especially when it comes to foreign policy. Tell me that anyone is a foreign policy expert and I will call you a liar. No one knows where, when or how a foreign relations issue will come up, nor the full history or the issue, nor the cultural and related dynamics of the issue. At best, one person may be well versed in one or two nations on the globe. So… essentially nothing.
Successful President effectively manage a massive team of talent, experts and conflicting personalities and information to produce results in situations where there are no correct answers.
In short, they do not vote ‘present’ and nothing is ‘above their paygrade’.

Thanks for mentioning this. I watched one of those interviews and the moderator mentioned something about twenty one debates. Sarah went through twenty one debates? And we’re worried about her handling Biden? Then I saw Greta’s program about Sarah last night. In one debate, her two opponents were arguing Chris Matthews style and Sarah stepped in with a terse, “You know, the people of Alaska deserve better than this.” It was brilliant.

Jamie Lee Curtis also appeared in Trading Places with Eddie Murphy who said he had no idea what the script was about regarding the trading of commodities. That is because these people are ACTORS. I am a historian. If you read about Presidents such as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, and Ronald Reagan.
If you read about military leaders such as Wellington, Pershing, Patton, Halsey, Franks, and Petraeus.
Or foreign leaders such as Thatcher, Cornwall, Lenin (like him or not he forged a nation that held off the rest of the world for 75 years), or my all time favorite Churchill the “Anchorage Daily News” would be talking of them.
Leaders don’t get bogged down in minutiae. That is why a thing called a staff was created. That is why you have leaders and followers. Palin reminds me of Reagan more then anyone else. She is focused on a few things, she knows who she is and stays true to that, and she is not going to be blinded by other details.
If you are a good leader then you will have good staffs.

As long as the Governor is herself, honest, doesn’t make things up, and doesn’t brag about herself or meander all over the place, I think she will be great. She could even make a minor mistake, as humans are prone to do, and if she owns right up to it, most people will be very forgiving.
And if Charlie Gibson asks her something like who the King of Swaziland is, the Governor can smile and say, “Well Mr. Gobson, I don’t know that. But if you give 5 seconds, I’ll be happy to get that answer for you on my Blackberry.”
