Video: Palinmania in Colorado Springs

Just listen to the crowd. I’ve honestly never seen anything like this for a conservative politician before.

Update: Maverick by four, says Zogby. “Clearly, Palin is helping the McCain ticket.”

Update: A prescient quote from last year tops Newsweek’s new profile of her: “When you talk about the Republican Party needing appealing candidates, darn right they do!… The Democrats, whether you like them or not … there is some dynamic there, and it’s something that the Republicans I think have lacked for some time.”

Update: It was like this yesterday in Michigan too, apparently. The Detroit News estimates a crowd of 10,000.

A slightly off topic question. Even with the popularity of Governor Palin, do the Republicans have the ground game this year. I am talking about registering voters, giving them rides election day, etc. etc. I heard Kondracke say on Fox today that the Dims have the advantage in that regard this election.

It has been bothering me ever since I heard it. I am so pumped up to finally have a real person running for high office, it would be a real downer to lose it because of a lack of organization.

kam582 on September 6, 2008 at 10:15 PM

Unfortunately the GOP is getting slaughter there. The democrats have created over 3 million new voters I think I read. The GOP LOST about 250,000 voters on its rolls in the last 5 months.

The GOP is still lagging badly behind. I swear I want to strangle the RNC everytime I find more bad news.

Hate to break to all you who believe she has her “speech down” and were “nervous” about her reading from a script. That semi transparent blackish screen in front of her is called a teleprompter.

She’s still the bomb.

“The One” is now “The Done.”

Star20 on September 6, 2008 at 10:23 PM

She is so very very good at this. Just compare her perfectly calibrated support for the guy at the top, the way she gets the crowd going, to Biden’s bizarre intro of Obama in Scranton a few days ago.

Bennett on September 6, 2008 at 10:23 PM

Try that again,

“Worse than I ever have. I’m in Asheville NC this week and caught part of Randy (HIC) Rhoades sp? Her commentary absolutely dehumanizes Sen McCain and especially Gov Palin. Her callers were rabid. I worry for her well-being. (Gov Palin)”

hawkdriver on September 6, 2008 at 10:24 PM

It’s true, the stump speech is the same stuff over and over and over again, the only difference is the town. That’s the nature of the stump speech.

Paul-Cincy on September 6, 2008 at 10:24 PM

Judging by the positive emotional level of the comments there is a lot to like about this ticket. The election will decided by the independent fence-sitters. When they go into the voting booth they will make up their minds, not based on campaign rhetoric, platforms, or philosophy, but on which ticket is more likable. Now I gotta ask ya, who are more likable?

elvis on September 6, 2008 at 10:24 PM

I just think Sarah Palin is one of those people who connects, it is a gift.

billypaintbrush on September 6, 2008 at 10:18 PM

Great comment. That’s a fundamental difference between her and Obama. He’s always angry and talking about the sky falling. She’s joyful and optimistic. It’s infectious.

TheBigOldDog on September 6, 2008 at 10:25 PM

I, too, am excited, but keep in mind that Colorado Springs and it’s suburbs are as red as it gets. You have the Air Force Academy, Fort Carson, NORAD (for now), Peterson Air Force Base, and Focus on the Family there.

Still, the Republican base is definetely energized.

I wouldn’t worry about party ID. A lot of people switched over in operation chaos plus they were all pre-Palin.

It takes a strong man to be able to stand next to a strong woman and not look weak. Can you picture BHO standing beside GOv Palin? That is why BHO did not pick hillary. He was not strong enough to stand besides a strong woman.

Yes, I want to hear her speak extemporaneously. If she can do that effectively; she’ll win this thing for McCain.

lorien1973 on September 6, 2008 at 10:29 PM

It’s all local…how many non-registered voters have you taken to the county board of elections recently? How many have you helped fill out a registration card?

Just getting one voter to register or getting one registered voter to vote for Mccain and then challenge them to get another voter to do the same. Worked in this area in ‘04. Went from near solid Kerry/Edwards to heavily weighted Bush/Cheney.

Call your local GOP organization. Volunteer a few hours.

Unlike liberals, who stand there with one thumb in their mouth and the other up their b*tt, waiting for someone to tell them to switch thumbs, Conservatives don’t need direction from on-high to tell them what they need to do.

Think the GOP is lagging in your state or district? Do something about it. A couple hours a week can make all the difference in the world.

coldwarrior on September 6, 2008 at 10:29 PM

mccain can’t feel comfortable hearing the story of his captivity over and over

anna on September 6, 2008 at 10:30 PM

By the way, Colorado Springs is home to the Gill Foundation, which is funneling money and other resources toward electing Democrats around Colorado and other states and advancing pro-homosexual legislation. They’ve had quite a bit of success.
By “pro-homosexual legislation” I mean the “special rights” type of legislation. For instance, one measure we had on the ballot in recent years was based on a collection of discrimination claims such as the false assertion that homosexual couples are not allowed to visit their partners in the hospital. The truth is that they can visit each other in the hospital, but no one is required to call them “spouses” when they do so. I’m a bit fuzzy now about everything the bill covered, but another item was the claim that same-sex couples couldn’t leave property to their partners in a will, which is also false.

They’re also big on abortion rights.

And part of it is because the Republican Party has been the visible face of pork-barrel politics for the better part of a decade, with Dubya at the head. Obambi and the nutroots have lured a lot of yewts into the Dem fold, but the rise to prominence of young conservatives like Palin (and hopefully Jindal) may help to reverse the trend. To really improve things, though, the pork-barrel RINOs have to go. If McCain can win and deliver on his promise of going to war with a pork-addicted Congress, one of the most notorious RINOs might actually redeem the GOP’s image.

fiatboomer on September 6, 2008 at 10:33 PM

kam582 on September 6, 2008 at 10:15 PM

It was conventional wisdom that the Dems had a significant Get Out The Vote advantage this year, but that was based on three factors – 1) a huge enthusiasm gap; 2) huge financial advantage; 3) extensive efforts to catch up with and surpass the ground game that won the election in ‘04, and that was fueled mainly by the much-neglected and -derided social conservatives.

I’d say more, but I suspect you can already see where I’m going here. A lot can change in two months – as we’ve seen – but there’s no reason now to assume the Dems have an advantage. IF Zero/Who? continues to flail, the base will become too (relatively) de-moralized to save them. As Mike Murphy pointed out, when a campaign starts talking about winning by boosting turnout among non-habitual voters, it usually means they’ve lost direction.

CK MacLeod on September 6, 2008 at 10:34 PM

The democrats are paying $8 dollars an hour for their voter registers (At least ACORN is) I know of several other groups taht are doing the same. If you want to know where Barry;s money is going (and not all of it is barry’s, Soros and others are really funneling a lot of money into these groups)

The dems arent just registering voters they are buying them.

With all due respect, you don’t know what you’re talking about. The registration changes are a concern, but nobody has a better GOTV operation than the Republicans. Without it, we would be enjoying the reelection campaign of President Kerry right now.

All this money that is pouring in now from excited conservatives is going straight into the GOP ground attack. Obama’s burning all his cash opening up too many offices in too many states. Republicans use volunteers, but they are well trained and well organized.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/09/06/politics/main4422449.shtml

To counter this effort, the Republicans are counting on a formidable, high-tech get-out-the-vote operation that has helped them win the past two presidential elections.

Since the last federal election in 2006, volunteers like Graham combined with the enthusiasm generated by the Obama-Clinton struggle to add more than 2 million Democrats to voter rolls in the 28 states that register voters according to party affiliation. The Republicans have lost nearly 344,000 voters in the same states.

William Amos on September 6, 2008 at 10:38 PM

I stand by my prior comments, Mr Amos. 250,000 voters is a drop in the bucket unless the race is a nail-biter, and none of us knows how many are coming home to the Rs, or staying home on Nov 4.

So Cal Congresscritter John Campbell was talking about a fundraiser out here that had been scheduled ahead of time to involve the Vice Presidential nominee, then-undetermined, at a private residence. They’re now thinking about having to move it to a stadium. It didn’t sound like he was exaggerating, and, when you see video like the above, it’s not hard to believe.

One thing we really need to do is hang tough with her no matter. In PA, we lost Sen Santorum, not because of scandal or flip-flopping but because he was exactly what he said he was and did exactly what he said he was going to do in office. We can’t get squeamish about what the press tries to lay on her. They are trying as hard as they can to make us embarrassed of her and at least me for one am not going to let it happen.

Like when these bastards say she was irresponsible for telling the world about Bristol, remind them it was to counter the stupid chatges from KOS and DU.

Part of what makes campaigning so tiresome is giving the same speech fifty times a week. It’s impractical to come up with new speeches for every stop. And since Sarah will be getting a LOT of TV coverage, we’ll be hearing some repetition.

backwoods conservative on September 6, 2008 at 10:44 PM

And everyone got a nice flag too (courtesy of the DNC throwing them in the trash and dumpster diving GOP saving them).

Just as long as they keep those flags away from this guy: http://marathonpundit.blogspot.com/2008/05/bill-ayers-stepping-on-us-flag-in-2001.html

Oh yeah, Andrew Sullivan said this:

“If Obama’s family were as colorful as Palin’s, you can bet the press would have been all over it.”

Well what about this family member of Obama’s: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/uselection2008/barackobama/2590614/Barack-Obamas-lost-brother-found-in-Kenya.html

Just heard O’Reilly and Sally QUinn show. This meme about the media backlash is the cause that’s pulling crowds to Sarah should be retired immediately. As if Sarah is not hot enough.

promachus on September 6, 2008 at 10:47 PM

That Newsweak article repeats an easily-refuted lie, compounded by sneaky wording:

As an undergrad, she bounced among five different colleges in Hawaii, Alaska and Idaho, and eventually got a degree in journalism from the University of Idaho.)

Note the subtlety. Some people will read that as “5 colleges + 1 University” = 6 schools. But it was only four schools. Two of those “five different colleges” are in fact non-consecutive stints at the University of Idaho:

Palin spent her first college semester at Hawaii Pacific College, transferring in 1983 to North Idaho College and then to the University of Idaho. She attended Matanuska-Susitna College in Alaska for one term, returning to the University of Idaho to complete her Bachelor of Science degree in communications-journalism, graduating in 1987.

If they get things like this wrong, I assume they bent the truth in some other places, too.

William Amos on September 6, 2008 at 10:23 PM

I am feeling the same way. We need a better ground game. Also (been mentioned by several people here before) we need a better plan demonstration. McCain’s had the Lexington Project out since before the Democratic talking points for alternative energy became everyday fodder. We also need clearer distinctions/ comparisons in the economic plan.

Both of these were covered at the convention, but the media and Obama are ignoring them and counting on Palinmania to be enough of a distraction. So far, they are getting away with it (while conveniently not talking about their pathetic plans either).

We’ve got momentum and excitement now, but we need the ground game and specific to take advantage of the opportunity in the spotlight.

As a soldier stationed at Fort Bragg in 1987 I was lucky enough to see two of America’s greatest heroes on one stage, Bob Hope and President Ronald Reagan. I must admit that I haven’t been excited about a politician since President Reagan left office, until now. Yes we could be in for a let down, but given the choice I’m willing to accept that risk.

By the way Puff Diddy…P Diddy or whatever you’re Amex card says this week, with all your money you’ll never have one of these or one of these.

SPIFF1669 on September 6, 2008 at 10:50 PM

Palin brings the social networks of the churches on board. Having them enthusiastically in the game should match up well against all the voters ACORN can register (but can’t make vote).

Dudley Smith on September 6, 2008 at 10:51 PM

Is it just us, or is it time for Sarah to come up with some new material?

We LOVE Sarah and especially loved her acceptance speech, but hearing the same anecdotes for the third time this week … just not sure how effective that is when we, who adore her, are kind of cringing.

And speaking of, I’m hearing from my conservative in-laws from St. Louis that their generation (60’s) wanted to hear Thursday night (1) about McCain’s faith (they don’t know what denomination he actually is … and I couldn’t tell them. Of course, I could tell them Hillary’s, since it matches mine, but kind of think she uses hers for marketing) and (2) exactly what the McCain-Palin administration will do if elected.

My mother-in-law assures me they will vote for McCain, but her crowd is hoping the 2 items above will be addressed in the coming weeks. However, she is sooooooo glad to see skirts and some Jackie-O type glam heading for the White House, instead of, for instance, pantsuits!!!

William Amos on September 6, 2008 at 10:23 PM

As I recall, there were more registered Democrats than Republicans when Reagan, GHW Bush & GW Bush won. Also, more Americans “identified” themselves in polls as Democrats than Republicans leading up to most of those elections. So, it’s not party registration or even identification that is the concern, but how people actually vote on November 4th. I have known some registered Democrats who have never voter for a Democratic presidential nominee.

McCain just can’t take his eyes off her speech on the podium…he needs to keep his eyes on the crowd.

Also, does he have the physical capability of putting his hands behind his back? The body language lady made a point of that the other day, and she’s right, if he did that, it’d make a powerful difference in his appearance as a powerful leader.

I think that Born Alive Infant Protection Act and Saddleback already insured that the churchgoing values voters would have turned out and even volunteered – but instead of having them trudging through the motions, they could be having a massive nationwide combination festival and march. In that sense, it’s too bad the election’s not next Tuesday. These days, two months is a long time to try to maintain a “phenom.” I’m hoping that the McCainiacs have something more up their sleeves to maintain the momentum, and that they weren’t totally locked in to an underdog come from behind late-breaking last weekend victory.

I live in Chapel Hell, NC and let me tell you, the dems are out in force, trying to register voters. I have seen them at the post office, the mall and grocery store. They look like they are just neutral, but my son told me that they act like they are nonpartisan, but after you talk to them for a few minutes they try to convince you to vote for Obama. They asked my son and his friends to register and how old they are; my son and his friends are 15 years old! They still look like kids! I was just watching videos on Realclear, of capmpaign stops. I watched Obama in PA, and McCain/Palin in Mn and my fiance who is Japanese and lately has been a campaign “widow” as I watch everthing online was shocked when I had her watch bits of both campaigns. Obama..jump to any point and his crowd is silent…and Mccain(forget Palin) had the crowd roaring at all points during the speech. My fiance commented on it and she doesn’t follow US olitics at all (Japans these days are more then enough)

Perhaps a video comparing the crowds enthusiasm would be a great video? Just a thought from another time zone…

Governor Palin needs to start drumming the phrase:

Because they have prevented our homefront energy development for years.

And created the current price crisis.

Hit them at their weakest point: Democratic obstructionist folly .

They won’t hit themselves.

But is it still a stump speech when it starts as an acceptance speech?

And why does a stump speech have to be the same, anyway? She is getting lots of media right now (old and new). I’d just love to see her grab this chance to not only continue on the upward climb she so wonderfully started, but also to grab other independents and on-the-fencers with some new info.

In my town here in ohio they come up and ask me if Im for raising the minimum wage or if Im for a new casino or some other cause (differs from day to day)

The Idea is to get your name from you so you can be bombarded later with DNC info.

BTW as an antidote I will tell you. In 1996 I went overseas to study and was away for that election. I had registered to vote absentee.

A month before I got my ballot I got a huge package of mail from the Local democratic party with information on all their candidates on the ballot. They actually sent me that stuff all the way to Europe to get me to vote for Bill Clinton on down.

The Dems have been making this effort for a decade. The RNC is still catching up.

I was there for a U.S. Senate campaign and when other counties were reporting, say, recruiting 10 volunteers, making 1000 calls and knocking on 500 doors a week (or something), Colorado Springs would have 10 times that amount or more. Conservatives are very organized there. The Bush rallies in 2004 were absolutely nuts with thousands of people lining up at like 3am for doors opening at 10am.

They’re serious: http://www.flickr.com/photos/alarmingnews/365634296/in/set-72157594493507751/

Incredible. Now, we, the G♥P, are the Party of Love! And HRC is laughing happily in the distance! And we like the sound of it! The Messiah’s supporters, Doubting Thomases all, who this time are right to doubt, are in panic mode! Suddenly there’s Casey Stengel: “Whoda ever thunk it?” We are Sarah Palin? And the 1969 NY Mets!

Brief change of subject, I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed this….

This movie is poised to make, literally, tens if not hundreds of dollars. It may even out make those classic Iraq movies; which were blockbusters in their own right.

Cindy Munford on September 6, 2008 at 11:37 PM

The democrats are paying $8 dollars an hour for their voter registers (At least ACORN is) I know of several other groups taht are doing the same. If you want to know where Barry;s money is going (and not all of it is barry’s, Soros and others are really funneling a lot of money into these groups)

The dems arent just registering voters they are buying them.

Yeh they have ads all over the NC craigslist. Reminds me of the paid protester ads after 9/11.

I have received multple calls from the RNC asking for support. Each time they called I gave them an ear full about how the Republicans have let us down and don’t deserve and will not get my support.

Since Governor Palin came on deck I have reconsidered my position.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there are many Americans with the same feelings.

TheSitRep on September 7, 2008 at 12:03 AM

Palin doesn’t seem to be relying on the teleprompter and I think that’s because she is just not use to using one. She talks from her heart and the notes in front of her and that clearly comes through.

Texas Gal on September 7, 2008 at 12:05 AM

Here’s the deal on the Palin stump speech for the McCain camp, forgetting that she does need time to study for debates with Biden.

She is far too big of a political figure now to not invest the time and money into some killer FRESH CONTENT as long as she feels what’s being said. I don’t give a crap about what stump speeches used to be like for all other politicians who came before her. This woman is unlike them all because of the media frenzy and her potential to deliver. Obama is “just some guy” compared to her. No one really cares what Obama actually says day after day. We’re tired of him after 19 long months. He could read a cereal box and sound the same and give us the same empty memories of him. It’s just his presence they’re after.

But everyone wants to hear her and better yet, actually listen and absorb the content of Gov Palin’s words. Pay some speechwriters to give this playmaker the opportunity to score. Take time off sooner rather than later to teach her proven speedreading techniques to smooth the process of learning it all in a compressed timeframe. Her potential is unlimited as far as we have seen. You got one chance to get this right people.

Voter registrants…$8 an hour.

Thought they were campaign volunteers? Paid volunteer…that would make them professional volunteers? Hired volunteers? Mercenary volunteers? Remunerated volunteers? They try to make “volunteer” such a pleasant sounding word. Around here, one volunteers, without expectation of recompense, just because one sees a need and fulfill’s it. You know, volunteer Scout Leader, volunteer teacher’s aide, volunteer to drive part of the soccer team to an away game, volunteer to do a few shifts at the high school concession stand during football games.

Never realized being a volunteer was a part-time career option. $8 an hour? Do they get health benefits, too? 401k?

Just musing here.

Here’s a simple line to add:

“I think people in Alaska knew I could take a punch and deliver one back. What they didn’t know when I came down here to the lower 48 is I could take a hard sucker punch too and drive whoever threw it right back into the boards!”

Come on, quit being inside the beltway dweebs and make history.

Please……. Please……. Please……. Please……. Please……. Please……. Please……. Please……. Please…….

Who ever is writing the speeches, ……… GET FRESH!!!!!

I Love Sarah,………. but I follow this stuff, and when I hear the “same” speech over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again……………. John, you are going to loose this thing.

Write a bill to harvest all possible energy reserves, bring Sarah to the Senate to introduce it and put the opposition on camera in the light of day to oppose it.

Start talking about the true reason we are in an energy crisis…. politicians. Talk about the true reason we had a mortgage crisis……… politicians. Talk about the real reason health care is “supposed” to be in dire straights….. politicians. Talk about the real reason our public school system is so screwed up…….. politicians and the teachers union monopoly.

They are wasting valuable interest, Sarah is the “the new girl in town” and everyone wants to do her. If she keeps up with the “old talking points”, she will soon be seen as yesterday’s news.

Who the hell is paying these speech writers anyway?

My stool has more imagination…….. This is a battle, this is a WAR for this country……….. fight, Fight, FIGHT!!!!!!!!

Relax man. Only 10% of the country heard the speech on the first go around. By repeating it, it gets in more local newscasts, in more newspaper stories and it becomes the message of the campaign. Then it’s replaced.

I’m in partial agreement with you. they did change it up a little today – threw in some biden criticism, etc – but don’t expect dramatic changes until she starts talking extemporaneously and she goes off on her own with rudy or whomever.

lorien1973 on September 7, 2008 at 12:36 AM

I just think Sarah Palin is one of those people who connects

She certainly connected with that big right cross to Obama’s Mussolini chin on Wednesday night…

lorien1973 on September 7, 2008 at 12:36 AM

I noticed some differences in this speech, but not enough.

My dad happened to be in the crowd today. His comment was that if she doesn’t get less scripted soon, it will hurt her.

You do have a point that those who haven’t been paying attention should find it a good speech, even while it drives the election junkies like us bugspit with the repetition.

Downside of the Internets – I watched Palin’s speech a half dozen times and heard its more quotable sections replayed a few dozen more. It’s already old hat.

My other complaint is somewhat shallow: she and I graduated the same year, she looks younger than me, but her voice reminds me of my aunt.

The cognitive dissonance gives me a headache.

Understand the frustration. But it has been only three days since her acceptance speech. Just three days.

Drop a note over at JohnMcCain.com, the campaign website, and let them know, and offer suggestions. If enough do likewise, might have an impact. While at the McCain site, look up the nearest Victory Center, call them, stop in, and tell them the same.

Maybe its because so many of us get our news online and see these things several times a day. Most of America does not. But, yes, hearing the same lines in the same order will get old and will get old fast.

[On the other hand, Obama is shooting from the hip, and being anti-gun, he can't shoot worth a damn; and Biden is shooting himself in the foot, cheap blended Scotch will do that to you. They go off scripted message and it becomes gaffe city. Maybe McCain doesn't want to do that. The Tuesday stop here in Ohio will be partially scripted and the rest townhall, from what I've been told. Let's see then if McCain and Palin can do it off the cuff.]

Hate to break it to you, but at her convention speech the teleprompter did not work.

i’ve heard this but i was rewatching the speech earlier on the rnc website and in a few shots you can clearly see the words on the teleprompter. so perhaps it went out here and there? not sure but it was at least working intermittently.

sulla on September 7, 2008 at 12:42 AM

I’m not disagreeing with you. I want her to start speaking off the top of her head. Remember she’s only been out there a few days. She still needs to study up and write some material. She’s a natural and from what I’ve read, a quick study.

I’m sick of the lines too. I’ve heard them too many times as well, but still many people haven’t.

People still go to concerts to hear music they’ve heard a million times before. It’s about the people, not the song. She’s bringing the asses.

Don’t forget. McCain is the top of this ticket. I’m sure his stuff changes more than hers. I usually close out the clips before he speaks, because, quite frankly, I’m in it for Palin and the future of this party.

lorien1973 on September 7, 2008 at 12:51 AM

anna on September 7, 2008 at 12:51 AM

I think they got the problem fixed. It was clearly not right – you can hear her cue the guy running it by saying the first words of her next paragraph into the mic during the applause breaks. She stops doing that, so that when they got it right I suspect.

Spirit of 1776 on September 7, 2008 at 12:56 AM

Allah ~

I just returned from the rally at the Albuquerque New Mexico Convention Center, and the crowd was Estactic! We sounded identical to the crowd in the video in Colorado Springs. Governor Palin was fantastic; and Senator McCain said, “with a reception like this in Albuquerque, I have no doubt that we will win New Mexico.” It was a spectacular event here today.

William – We have a thing in our country called the Electoral College. The race is not always to the swiftest, nor the battle to the strong, nor the Presidency to the winner of the majority of popular votes. He needs a majority of electoral votes.

It does not matter how many people vote for him in Illinois, New York, and California. If they are spending money on these kinds of efforts in urban areas, it is a waste.

Do you have any evidence of Obama’s getting the upper hand by doing this in key swing states? Maybe he is, but I think that will be a hard sell in most swing states. I like our chances. A lot.

connertown on September 7, 2008 at 1:00 AM

Still love Sarah Palin but she seemed rushed. She has to learn to let the crowd blow off steam, shout and clap. That is what they came for.

This is due in part for running in the number two position. Her role is to build up McCain rather than run on her own platform.

She will get better and I can’t wait until she make chum out of the MSM chumps.
