The Recycled Flags of the DNCC; Update: Pathetic spin by Team O

Democrats brought out tens of thousands of American flags to Invesco Field, saluting Barack Obama as he spoke from the Styrofoam columns of the Barackopolis at the conclusion of the Democratic convention. Perhaps some of them took the flags home as souvenirs, but where did the rest go? According to David Harsanyi, they went into the trash — and would have gone to a landfill, except for a worker at Invesco who rescued them from the dumpsters:
This morning, Republicans tell me that a worker at Invesco Field in Denver saved thousands of unused flags from the Democratic National Convention that were headed for the garbage. Guerrilla campaigning. They will use these flags at their own event today in Colorado Springs with John McCain and Sarah Palin.
Before McCain speaks today, veterans will haul these garbage bags filled with flags out onto the stage — with dramatic effect, no doubt — and tell the story.
Didn’t anyone make arrangements for better disposal of these flags from Invesco? At the very least, they were an investment that could have been re-used at rallies in Colorado as well as the rest of the nation during the general election. Instead, they’ve handed a dramatic moment to John McCain and Sarah Palin, as well as relieved them of the cost of 12,000 such flags — as well as a full 3′x5′ flag that also wound up in the trash.
Remember when the DNCC was supposed to be the “greenest convention ever”? How they worried about the color of the food and using organic materials in their merchandise? I guess we can see where the “green” concern ends … at red, white, and blue.
Still … I hope the RNCC did a better job rescuing discarded flags at the Xcel Center.
Update: If you want to know how to properly dispose of flags, you can check the US Flag Code. If you’re still confused, contact your local American Legion or VFW, and they will help you dispose of them. (h/t: Indythinker in comments)
Update II: I’m getting e-mails saying that we need to “stop the lies” because Team Obama put this out as a statement:
Stories circulating about flags from the Democratic National Convention are false. More than 125,000 American-made flags were distributed at the Convention – any flags removed from the Convention after the event were taken without authorization. It’s disappointing that someone would take American flags without authorization and then falsely describe their intended purpose. We have the utmost respect for the American flag and it’s sad to see them being used for a cheap political stunt.
They claim that the flags were “bundled” for return to their manufacturer. If so, it’s the first time I’ve ever heard of anyone bundling returned merchandise in Hefty bags and storing them “in and around dumpsters” while awaiting the RMA. Here’s the picture that ran in the Denver Post:

I sincerely doubt that these flags got sold to Team Obama in Hefty bags. And let’s try to parse this story down with some common sense:
- Why would a manufacturer provide a refund on open product? They certainly couldn’t resell them, especially not after being left like this at Invesco.
- 12,000 flags must have cost at least $2,000 or so, and probably more. Once Democrats discovered the “theft”, why didn’t they report it to the police? It’s been more than a week apparently since they were “stolen”, and Team Obama just discovered it?
- Leaving material in and around dumpsters, especially in Hefty bags, makes it look like trash. That’s hardly a way to store American flags, and it’s certainly not a way to keep janitors and waste management people from taking them to landfills.
Instead of just saying that their people made a really stupid error and apologizing, though, Team Obama decided to tell a ridiculous lie to get themselves off the hook.
Update III: David Harsanyi now has several updates to his first report, including this:
I just spoke with the person at Invesco who found the flags and he thinks both sides are exaggerating a bit. The person claims the majority of the bags with flags in them were near the trash, on a dock, and would have been thrown away. The person thinks it was probably an “oversight” by the Democrats rather than any nefarious plot against the flag. But the person doesn’t believe anyone was coming to get them: “The flags were there for a week and a day and no one came looking for them.”
No one suggested here that it was a “nefarious plot”, and like Harsanyi, I hardly think that Obama would have directed his staff to throw 12,000 American flags in a dumpster. In fact, until Team Obama issued this ludicrous statement, the story didn’t have anything to do with them. However, the obvious carelessness with which the DNCC treated the flags is a rather revealing moment for them, and the lie for people in Obama’s organization.
Update IV: Gateway Pundit has pictures of individual flags sitting in trash bags, but that’s not the DNCC’s fault; it’s the fault of the individuals who threw out their flags. The DNCC couldn’t possibly be expected to sort through all of the thousands of bags of normal trash. They can be expected to know better than to toss 12,000 American flags in with it.
Jazz Shaw’s following the story at TMV.

The truth is that’s not the way to treat the American Flag, no matter what the original intent was, which will probably never be known for sure. I’m not from a military background, but as an American, I would never stash the American Flag in any form in a trash bag.
The followers of Obama have denigrated everything from the Presidential Seal, to the airplane, to the seat in the airplane to the American flag. They are so busy being twenty-somethings that they have no sense of the country’s history. Not their fault for the most part – they were never taught. The RNC may have been hokey in places but it was real.
Mr_Magoo on September 6, 2008 at 8:37 PM
0bama eliminated the flag from his lapel until it was noticed, eliminated it from his plane and replaced it with a tribute to himself, not sure if it was on his fake presidential seal.
He doesn’t Love this country or therefore respect the flag just look to his past associations. He has remade his image just to get elected. He is a Black activist in the vein of the Black Panthers. He hung around reverend Wright for 20 years. His buddy Ayers walked on and burned the flag why would 0bama even consider properly disposing of it?
He must be defeated!

In fairness, whenever I buy an article of clothing at the mall, and later realize it doesn’t fit I generally seek a refund by putting it in a trash bag and finding the dumpsters outside the mall. I’m sure I’ll be seeing a credit on my credit card account for the returned merchandise any day now.
And a quick tip for anyone thinking about returning some spoiled food to the grocery store. I bought some fruit the other day, but when I started cutting it up I discovered it was rotten on the inside… so I did what anyone would do – I attempted to get a refund by putting the fruit down the garbage disposal rather than bringing it back to the store. Again, I’m sure my refund is on it’s way.
Seriously, will these people (and no team Barry, I don’t mean that like “you people” in a racist way) ever stop the obvious and stupid lies? This is as lame as the large group of people who are no longer the same people he “used to know”, or any of the other countless lies they’ve thrown out to cover up controversies.
Just apologize and move on you douche. This story was essentially over until you issued this

In the picture the flags with the black plastic opened up to see them look very neat, as if for storage. Normally people don’t bother to keep things neat like that if they are bagging them just to be thrown away. Also, as displayed, the flags were in plastic bags by themselves. Normally when people are planing to throw things away they just put them in with all manner of other things helter-skelter, cups, plates, balloons, confetti, etc, not place them neat in separate bags. It is of the highest importance in the art of detection to be able to recognize out of a number of facts which are incidental and which vital.

From Fox News election coverage at (possibly already posted):
“Boy Scouts were sorting through 84 bags of flags in Colorado on Saturday, before a McCain supporter had veterans distribute them to the audience.
“We want to find good homes for these flags,” radio host Dan Caplis said at the rally, adding that whatever flags remained would be placed at memorials throughout Colorado.
Audience members, who booed when Caplis announced that the flags were left in Denver, waved the flags and chanted “U.S.A” before McCain arrived at the rally with his running mate, Sarah Palin.
Damon Jones, spokesman for the Democratic National Convention Committee, released a statement saying McCain should applaud the fact that thousands of American flags were “proudly waved” at their convention.
“But instead his supporters wrongfully took leftover bundles of our flags from the stadium to play out a cheap political stunt calling into question our patriotism,” he said.”
Why applaud the fact that they were used as props, only to be discarded like so much trash?

Again, so what? Isn’t that the same as advertising? A Lobby or a PAC is a way for a large number of like minded people to make sure their point of view is known to representatives of their own national government, it is more efficient and hardly illegal. If a representative, as an individual, takes a large sum of money or perks from a lobbyist to pass legislation to benefit that group monetarily then you have a problem. I know it happens and I am all for those folks who break the law to spend time in jail, regardless of their party. I cannot get excited food and drink at either convention. On the political side, McCain/Palin scored big all across America today with the distribution of the abandoned Flags. An inexpensive gambit paid for by Obama/Biden. All the spin in the world will not get that genie back in the bottle. And it didn’t cost McCain/Palin a penny.
After this Flag thing hits the Sunday circuit, it’ll grow legs.
After Monday, when the first solid indications of the McCain/Palin bounce and a lead over Obama is shown, confirmed on Tuesday and Wednesday, this story will be literally yesterday’s news. For McCain/Palin they on the next three or four targets.
If the Obama camp tries to hit back again on the Flag issue, then the guns will most likely come out.
Then, once again, the Obama/Biden camp pay for yet another McCain/Palin gain.
Have you detected a pattern yet? Obama/Biden are stuck playing checkers. The McCain/Palin camp is playing chess, and well.
Let’s see, we nailed Oprah, and got a huge reaction from her vieweership, and a lot of movmenet from undecided to McCain. Us magazine, solidly in the Obama camp lost readership 9income) over a front page picture. Today, we saw Obama to slip up over his position on gun control, and drove more toward McCain/Palin.
The MSM smears against the Palin family drive more toward McCain.
We got all the left blogs stumbling all over themselves trying to out shout each other…and losing sight of what is important.
In the meantime, Obama and Biden are being forced to have Hillary stump for them in Florida where she is barely breaking squelch. Biden is pretty much being pushed toward the undercarriage of the bus. And the O/B ticket has wasted yet another day over this Flag issue.
Got to wonder who is running the Obama campaign? If it is Obama, then he has sealed it for himself by his arrogance in saying his campaign shows he is qualified to be President. We had Carter, and that was a real wonderful administration. Why would anyone, now, want Carter II in the form of Obama? The present state of the Obama campaign is proof that he has no idea what is going on.
Mob at the gates? No. Just a lot of confused Left rabble trying to make sense of their Obamatron loyalties.
coldwarrior on September 6, 2008 at 9:22 PM
Did anyone at the DNC ever make a statement saying they wanted the flags back? “Please return your flags for recycling/further use/proper disposal by placing them in the container at the door,” or similar?
If I went to a political rally or convention and someone handed me a flag, free of charge, I would consider it a souvenir, not something I had to return.
Did they seriously just implicitly accuse all those who took the flags home with them – or threw them out – of being thieves?

Chickens coming home tooooo ROOOOOOOSSSSTTTT!
You know I listened to all those sermons via J. Wright. I even read some of “The Trumpet” articles about how these people feel about not only our country, but Evangelicals and Conservatives. They do not like us, or Ameri K K K of A.
I have performed my own research on THE ONE. And I have also seen the Democrat Party as a whole deviate from the strong patriotic Americans they once were. I believe this is one of the reasons Zell Miller and other Democrats have become so disenchanted with their party. Sad.
Quite frankly it is very sad to see one of the two main American political parties in this nation so taken over by people that do not love this country. I liked them better when they were the party of Roosevelt and Kennedy. We have had our differences on political issues, but this clash over patriotism is there and no amount of name calling or “how dare you” is going to change the fact that actions like these, while somewhat honestly made, reflects either a conscious or subconscious action of discarding improperly the American flag that both Democrats and Republicans have died for.
And ultimately what has been achieved by all of this? Nothing. We can scream they are unpatriotic until the cows come home, but not one of them is going to consider this was wrong, accept responsibility and make a correction. They are still going to call us racists, Bible thumpers, gay haters, rich, white people.
We need to begin to actually do something about changing the hearts and minds of our own citizens so that actions like these do not repeat. We as Conservatives and Republicans need to begin really fighting the smears against us and our country. To me it is not just the treatment of the flags, but a serious problem with their whole mindset and outlook on America and Americans. Example, Obama on not meeting with General Patreaus, not giving enough credit to our military for the surge working, and the entire visiting the troops ordeal in Germany. See Dems it is the actions that are matching up with the deeds, or the mistakes that cause us to think you do not love this country.
There are patriotic Democrats. I have seen them serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. They are buried all over this nation. However, what they currently do not understand is they have been shut out of their party and shunned by the likes of Obama, Axelrod, and Soros. They do not see, or fathom the extent to which these men want to destroy this nation. And it is really upsetting to think that a once very patriotic party has been so damaged by the likes of these men and others who do not believe in the value of 12,000 American flags.

When I was a kid, growing up on military bases all across the globe, there were Democrats and Republicans, and it really didn’t matter much. One of the thrills as a kid overseas was when an aunt or uncle would send Presidential campaign goodies out to us. The Kennedy and Nixon stuff, the Ike items, all of it. The AuH2O chocolate bars wrapped up in gold foil I remember vividly. We kids traded this stuff around. I’ll give you one AuH2O button for an LBJ Texas sticker, that sort of thing.
Wonder what is is like today…being a military brat and confronted by the vitriole and vindictiveness of the Left and seeing your Dad or Mom, Democrats, in uniform daily…and wondering why they serve?
Once was a time when this Left-Right stuff never loomed large in our lives, we were all Americans, just had different approaches to governance. Since 1968, it changed. Since 2000 it has become rabid…especially on the Left. I’ve heard “he’s not ‘my’ President” too many times too many.

Considering the things that Republicans are required to refute I think it is safe to say that this is small potatoes comparatively speaking. Add to that that this site is pretty good about defusing lies put out about the Democratic nominee and their party in general I see no reason to tut-tut over some minor vents and rants. Plus we have learned some really great stuff about some of our posters.

Any tapes of Republican whack jobs rushing the rostrum at the Denver Convention or stealing passes to get inside to hang “protest” banners inside the Dem convention hall?
Would love to see those.

Who bought the flags in the first place and why?
The flags were part of the DNC pretending to be patriotic while the country was watching. When the TV cameras left–the symbols of American freedom were thrown in the trash.
This is a symbol in and of itself.
A new line for Palin: American’s want a President who doesn’t make a show of waving the flag for the cameras and as soon as the American people turn their back tosses them in the garbage.
John McCain the one you can trust when the cameras are on and when they are off.

Stock up on Depends; you will need them. It’s going to be a long nine weeks for you.
Who’s surprised that the DNCC didn’t bother to think about this issue? The DNCC opened the door; McCain and Palin simply walked through it. Thanks.
Team McCain needs to work this DNCC screw-up into an ad that sticks it to the DNCC and, by implication, to that well-oiled campaign machine that Obama is citing as evidence of his executive experience.
First question for the DNCC/Obama: Who, specifically, was charged with the responsibility of collecting and shipping the flags to their ultimate destination?
Second question for the DNCC/Obama: By the following statement, are they seriously accusing McCain’s campaign of stealing property that’s been abandoned for more than a week?

It got worse with the arrogant “not in my name”, “I need more evidence” crap from so many on the left.

Excellent. You’ve been hired by the McCain speechwriting team.

Like the whole segment on a photo of Walter Reed Middle School that was behind Senator McCain that should have been Walter Reed Hospital? Mistakes happen, people goof on them. And some things are more offensive to some people, that’s okay isn’t it.
Cindy Munford on September 6, 2008 at 10:08 PM
I can see the video now.
Two guys walking down the street, one looks over at the trash can and sees the flag lying on top of the rest of the trash.
He turns to his friend and says, “Looks like the Obama rally must be over”.

I’m playing post on Hot Air…
It is the McCain/Palin campaign that is playing chess.
It is the Obama/Biden campaign that is playing checkers.

That rumour was debunked on TV. They said that was suposed to be a picture of an American school yard, with a porch, and a flag. All in the picture. The name of the school was a coincedence.

I liked your phrasing, but I thought there was another way to go.
BuckeyeSam on September 6, 2008 at 10:14 PM
It is “okay” with me as I do not concern myself with triffles, but don’t you think that those on the “enemy side” will maintain that something like that shows great disrespect for wounded soldiers? This is sure turning out to be some election.

That’s good to know but it doesn’t change the point that it was being treated like a screw up by the McCain campaign. If only briefly. As this flag incident may be just a big misunderstanding. I won’t stoop the the level the Dems have about Bush, McCain and now Gov. Palin but when it comes to stuff like this, it is just another sign of a group of people that demean the beliefs and customs of people they want to vote for them in November. I DON’T GET IT!!!

They are not the enemy. As noted above they are people who treat my beliefs with disdain then ask me to vote for them. So when they get caught in blatantly disrespectful behavior I won’t pretend to be pious. Is it a trifle, you bet, and for a day I will think it is funny that they got busted, then I will forget about it. I am smart enough to realize the Sen. Obama had nothing to do with it but I am smart enough to that his campaign is not blowing smoke. And that’s funny.

I got my noggin fried today standing in the Colorado sun waving one of those flags, and I got to tell you it was a beautiful sight seeing that sea of Old Glory. Mac and Sarah have no doubt they are loved here, they got a great welcome and a huge goodbye, with many folks waiting until the Straight Talk Express was a dot in the sky before leaving. Didn’t see a single discarded flag as I left, they every one were being treated as the treasures they are.
Thanks Zer-O, for my new flag!

Darlin, don’t despair, this country may hit some bumps but as long as we are willing to stand up and be heard, we will be fine. Just wait and see, we are going to do some utterly BRILLIANT things in the next ten years. People are just letting off a little steam, it truly is okay.

According to the stories I saw, the DNCC did sort through the trash in order to meet their “green” goals – or at least a whole bunch of volunteers did. So I wonder if they sorted the flags out, then failed to follow up on where the flags – as opposed to recyclable plastic, compostable, etc. stuff – were supposed to go?
