The Recycled Flags of the DNCC; Update: Pathetic spin by Team O

Democrats brought out tens of thousands of American flags to Invesco Field, saluting Barack Obama as he spoke from the Styrofoam columns of the Barackopolis at the conclusion of the Democratic convention.  Perhaps some of them took the flags home as souvenirs, but where did the rest go?  According to David Harsanyi, they went into the trash — and would have gone to a landfill, except for a worker at Invesco who rescued them from the dumpsters:

This morning, Republicans tell me that a worker at Invesco Field in Denver saved thousands of unused flags from the Democratic National Convention that were headed for the garbage. Guerrilla campaigning. They will use these flags at their own event today in Colorado Springs with John McCain and Sarah Palin.

Before McCain speaks today, veterans will haul these garbage bags filled with flags out onto the stage — with dramatic effect, no doubt — and tell the story.

Didn’t anyone make arrangements for better disposal of these flags from Invesco?  At the very least, they were an investment that could have been re-used at rallies in Colorado as well as the rest of the nation during the general election.  Instead, they’ve handed a dramatic moment to John McCain and Sarah Palin, as well as relieved them of the cost of 12,000 such flags — as well as a full 3′x5′ flag that also wound up in the trash.

Remember when the DNCC was supposed to be the “greenest convention ever”?  How they worried about the color of the food and using organic materials in their merchandise?  I guess we can see where the “green” concern ends … at red, white, and blue.

Still … I hope the RNCC did a better job rescuing discarded flags at the Xcel Center.

Update: If you want to know how to properly dispose of flags, you can check the US Flag Code. If you’re still confused, contact your local American Legion or VFW, and they will help you dispose of them.  (h/t: Indythinker in comments)

Update II: I’m getting e-mails saying that we need to “stop the lies” because Team Obama put this out as a statement:

Stories circulating about flags from the Democratic National Convention are false. More than 125,000 American-made flags were distributed at the Convention – any flags removed from the Convention after the event were taken without authorization.  It’s disappointing that someone would take American flags without authorization and then falsely describe their intended purpose. We have the utmost respect for the American flag and it’s sad to see them being used for a cheap political stunt.

They claim that the flags were “bundled” for return to their manufacturer.  If so, it’s the first time I’ve ever heard of anyone bundling returned merchandise in Hefty bags and storing them “in and around dumpsters” while awaiting the RMA.  Here’s the picture that ran in the Denver Post:

I sincerely doubt that these flags got sold to Team Obama in Hefty bags.  And let’s try to parse this story down with some common sense:

  • Why would a manufacturer provide a refund on open product?  They certainly couldn’t resell them, especially not after being left like this at Invesco.
  • 12,000 flags must have cost at least $2,000 or so, and probably more.  Once Democrats discovered the “theft”, why didn’t they report it to the police?  It’s been more than a week apparently since they were “stolen”, and Team Obama just discovered it?
  • Leaving material in and around dumpsters, especially in Hefty bags, makes it look like trash.  That’s hardly a way to store American flags, and it’s certainly not a way to keep janitors and waste management people from taking them to landfills.

Instead of just saying that their people made a really stupid error and apologizing, though, Team Obama decided to tell a ridiculous lie to get themselves off the hook.

Update III: David Harsanyi now has several updates to his first report, including this:

I just spoke with the person at Invesco who found the flags and he thinks both sides are exaggerating a bit. The person claims the majority of the bags with flags in them were near the trash, on a dock, and would have been thrown away. The person thinks it was probably an “oversight” by the Democrats rather than any nefarious plot against the flag. But the person doesn’t believe anyone was coming to get them: “The flags were there for a week and a day and no one came looking for them.”

No one suggested here that it was a “nefarious plot”, and like Harsanyi, I hardly think that Obama would have directed his staff to throw 12,000 American flags in a dumpster.  In fact, until Team Obama issued this ludicrous statement, the story didn’t have anything to do with them.   However, the obvious carelessness with which the DNCC treated the flags is a rather revealing moment for them, and the lie for people in Obama’s organization.

Update IV: Gateway Pundit has pictures of individual flags sitting in trash bags, but that’s not the DNCC’s fault; it’s the fault of the individuals who threw out their flags.  The DNCC couldn’t possibly be expected to sort through all of the thousands of bags of normal trash.  They can be expected to know better than to toss 12,000 American flags in with it.

Jazz Shaw’s following the story at TMV.

Now, compare Dave with the recent Australian and British posters we have. A world of difference and deference apart. – coldwarrior on September 6, 2008 at 3:04 PM

Gentlemen both. The chap from Australia is a delight and I am grateful that the Aussies have always been our friends. Ditto for the Brits.

The Canadians,it seems, are in an unfortunate cultural grey zone: they aren’t really Ameerican and they aren’t really British. I suspect they resent this, to some extent, and feel overshadowed by their American neighbors and, perhaps, a little jealous, because while they are nothing more than our neighbor, Britain, for better or worse, will forever be our mother.

Seems that there are two types of flags. The first are those that were still wrapped up, never used and supposedly going to be returned to the manufacturer.

The second we saw in the pictures of garbage.

The statement from the campaigns only refers to the unused ones.

That was cute. I am sure we can find any number of video clips with our guys, right and left, telling pretty much the same joke. Do y’all serve what they call rubber chicken at your events?

Cindy Munford on September 6, 2008 at 3:12 PM

No problem. I know the anti-Canadian sentiment is not being directed at me, but probably like you I never pass up a chance to defend my country. – CanadianGuy on September 6, 2008 at 3:07 PM

YOU are a gentleman and always have been. I’m sorry my outrage falls upon your shoulders as well. I am an obnoxious and outspoken American who is tired of attacks on his country. I know there are many Canadians as sterling as you who love their American neighbors. I hope that you will discern the spirit of my outrage accordingly.

ManlyRash on September 6, 2008 at 3:13 PM

Uh, ManlyRash,

Canadian forces beat us head-to-head in the two wars in which we faced off against them.

And, as CanadianGuy points out, they got a bunch of our citizens out of Iran when the Iranians were out hunting for American blood.

During WWII, they sent corvettes (small ships based on a littoral design) out into the open Atlantic to escort American transports half way to Great Britain.

They’ve served beside us in Afghanistan.

They even have the same problems with Liberals that we have here — back-biting, big-government, graft-taking Liberals.

And, as for Dave Rywall’s comment about our sexualization of the American flag on a bikini, check out the “Canada Kicks [gluteus maximus]” site at http://www.canadaka.net/article/527-canadian-bikini-babe-wallpaper

She’s obviously one Canadian I’d like to meet.

They claim they were going to return them to the manufacturer for redistribution. Time to track down the manufacturer and see if they have such a policy.

Regardless, why were they on the ground?

Dave Rywall on September 6, 2008 at 2:45 PM

I live in a county with a population of about 40,000. On Memorial Day the half mile of main street that runs by the cemetary has a flag every 10 feet or so, over 500 flags. If you look closely you will notice that some of these flags had only 48 stars. All the flags have one thing in common though. At one time every one of them had been draped over a coffin.

Come visit sometime, there are lots of people here that would love to discuss this issue with you in person.

Lib-speak.

Yours is an unproveable argument; the World, like America, is not monolithic in its thinking; but the fact that you base your decisions on what you think Europeans, or Middle-Easterners think of you, speaks volumes. And it’s sad.

OMG. I salute you, sir.

When I was twelve years old,I witnessed a visit from the military to my upstairs neighbor to tell her that her boy died in Vietnam. I sat there in our apartment, hands around my knees, not knowing what to think or do as I heard her wail and sob. I will never forget that day as long as I live. Many years later I visited the Wall, found his name, and touched it. And somehow, the grief abated. Just a little.

Thank you.

Granted, they’ll try – but in the end, who is going to believe that the flags that were in black TRASH BAGS without instructions – near dumpsters – were intended for reuse? Riiiggghhht.

txdoc on September 6, 2008 at 3:25 PM

You’ve all missed the point. They don’t need those flags anymore. After their convention and the obamassiah came down out of the heavens, they knew they would have a new flag. It will be one like the one obama is previewing on his stand when he speaks. So get rid of those outdated ones, the ones he refuses to salute, or wear on his label.
I’m not sure I’m being sarcastic, either.

Ladies and gentlemen…there’s the difference between us and the left spelled out. Yes, the flag is a symbol–a very special symbol. It is the symbol of freedom…of sacrifice…of hope…of liberty. It represents those who died protecting our freedoms from Lexington Green to Fallujah. It represents the hope that legal immigrants coming in from Italy, Columbia, China, feel as they gaze upon it and as they look to better their lives. It symbolizes the right of the alphies to belittle and denigrate it without having to fear their door being kicked down in the middle of the night and their being dragged off to a “reeducation” camp.

Yes, it is a symbol–a symbol of pride and honor.

Words that the modern left have long forgotten the meaning of.

Canada is stuffed full of awesome people MR. Rywall is not the example of a true Canadian; Rywall is simply a typical nutter Liberal brain-dead lying sack of shit, not unlike any Liberal that can be found in most every country where one can run off at the mouth without the fear of murder.

On another note: I was surfing the web one night several years ago, when I stumbled upon a site called Captains Quarters. I stopped in and read what this man named Ed Morrissey had to say. I liked what Ed had to say, and I recognized a talent in Ed that some people just have; a gift, the language of the heart.

I’m proud to say that Ed Morrissey is not only a member of the new media, but has been recognized by the likes of Rush Limbaugh and Hugh Hewitt for the talents that made CQ such a huge success.

Rock on Ed! You’re making a difference.

GooDDaddy you are incredibly fortunate, now if you can just send next week’s megamillions lottery numbers to me by private email. (Just kidding).
Just finished watching the McCain/Palinator rally in Colorado Springs (funny Sarah Palin even referred to Colorado Springs in her speech-that hick even knew what city she was in even after tons of jet lag and lack of sleep since a week ago Thursday whereas Obama never seems to know where he is at any given time) AND THEY GAVE OUT THOSE FLAGS TO ADOPTIVE MEMBERS IN THE AUDIENCE!
Great for the McCain/Palin campaign. One shows disrespect for the USA and its symbols (yes alphie a symbol, but unlike the dems who step on it like Ayres and Ketchup) the repubs care deeply about it and cherish it and the principles it represents.

Which is why reform is so important, and why Mac’s message resonates.

The republicans are a small gov party that gets corrupted by power.

The democrats are a big gov party that gets corrupted by power.

Considering the evils of big government, which is the better jump off point? Seems blatantly obvious. And now and again, we need a shakeup. That’s why Mac’s numbers are just going to get better and better and better.

I fly my country’s flag (yes it’s lighted at night), but I don’t get upset at flag paper plates etc. To me, it’s not the flag, it’s just a representation. If they started making plates out of actual flags, I’d feel different.

I know it goes against code. Same with shirts that are flag patterned. But I have a hard time condemning people who literally wrap themselves in those shirts, etc. To be wrong because they love the flag is different to me then to be wrong because they discard the flag. It’s not like it says in the Bible how to treat flags, it’s social construction, the rules created because of love and respect. Anyway, They didn’t discard flag plates, they were flags.

If you have “extra” signs made do you send them back to the manufactures after each rally or do you ship them forward for use? Neither the signs or the flags become obsolete so why return them? I am just exploring the Dem’s argument.

Cindy Munford on September 6, 2008 at 4:11 PM

Let’s stop bashing Canada, please. They’re doing a magnificent job in Afghanistan, risked their lives in Iran to rescue Americans in 1979, and sacrificed many of their men in World War II. I love Canada and Canadians. Let’s remember who our real friends are.

As the unemployment rate goes through the roof…expect many phony issues like this to crop up, Spirit.

what’s the roof? 6.5%

I don’t want to burst your bubble, but McCain has been talking about difficult economic times for a long time. Even back in the debates months ago when it wasn’t as clear what the impact of various economic factors would be. Taking the unpopular line there as well.

And I have to tell you, love of country is not a phony issue. It’s a prerequisite to trust in this country. That’s why throwing medals over the fence or saying you are proud of America for the first time are viscerally rejected.

Spirit of 1776 on September 6, 2008 at 4:16 PM

Anything to keep the focus off the economy for Bush & McCain.

Anyhing!

alphie on September 6, 2008 at 4:07 PM

6% is through the roof? You Lefties thrive on misery. You wallow in it like pigs in a sty. When there’s not enough it you make it up. It’s really pathetic. No wonder you folks want to peruse socialism. You want more misery to wallow in.

TheBigOldDog on September 6, 2008 at 4:16 PM

McCain has been talking about difficult economic times for a long time

Haha, Spirit…even McCain himself admits he doesn’t know jack about the economy.

Marry rich or you’re on your own is his motto.

Oh, and plenty of tax cuts for him and his wealthy pasl, of course…the breeder’s kids will pay off the debt.

alphie on September 6, 2008 at 4:19 PM

Conservatives – we’ve got a few problems, let’s fix them.

Liberals – the world is ending, vote for us, we’ll turn on the Gargantuan governmental teat, and tax the rich.

alphie is a passive aggressive, the worst kind to go to war with, or into any kind of business (will leave you alone or stab you at the most unexpected moment, while being polite ahead of that).

Entelechy on September 6, 2008 at 4:23 PM

Haha, Spirit…even McCain himself admits he doesn’t know jack about the economy.

To round out his understanding, he needs a good team behind him. With Romney on board, should be no problem.

Marry rich or you’re on your own is his motto.

I think you are confusing him with John Kerry. Look at the numbers, if you fear money. The rich party is the Democrat party.

Oh, and plenty of tax cuts for him and his wealthy pasl, of course…the breeder’s kids will pay off the debt.

When John McCain opposed the tax cuts, it was because spending cuts didn’t come with them. It’s extremely difficult (and not persuasive) to even argue that tax cuts don’t stimulate the economy, but we do need spending cuts to reduce the size of the bloated government.

Cindy Munford on September 6, 2008 at 4:32 PM

I guess we can see where the “green” concern ends … at red, white, and blue.

The Democrats just can’t help themselves. This is who they are. This is how they think. This is what they talk to each other about. This is what is taught in their schools. This is what is joked about at their cocktail parties. This is what is in their party platform. To them, this is reality, and our belief in reverence for the flag to them is repulsive and a challenge to all they hold dear.

….. and when they try to hide it, and feign patriotism, you can see it like pearls on a pig.

Seven Percent Solution on September 6, 2008 at 4:38 PM

I finally get my power back after 4 hours of entertaining small children in the dark, I hop online, and I am greeted by this? Dis. Gus. Ting.

My daughter, who thinks our flag is the prettiest and most awesome thing ever, was upset to see the picture of the flags in the trash. If a young child knows this is wrong, what does that say about the adults that attended the convention? It really doesn’t take that much work to instill a sense of pride of country into children – I guess it was too much work for their parents.

Anna on September 6, 2008 at 4:38 PM

That’s because you are out of touch with the American spirit.

Americans will volunteer time and money to things that they believe in.

That’s why community-based and faith-based organizations work so much better then national welfare programs. That’s why moms will give up their careers to homeschool so that they can give their children a better education instead of confining them to failed educational systems. Americans put their time and labor into things that they think can make the world a better place.

Unfortunately for the nation, Your momma was one of those ‘breeders’.

Can we hope, based on your hatred of people who bear children, that we WILL luck out this time, and not have any of YOUR offspring to further degrade the gene pool?

“…amazed how easy it is…to get the Bitter Bumpkins to work for ‘em for free.”

alphie on September 6, 2008 at 4:30 PM –

Got a good point there…it is getting easier to let the MSM and the Obamatron’s to do our work for us…and for free. The libtard bumpkins (such as our own little alphie and the HuffPo and Kos crew) are taking down Obama one blog snark after another, and each jejune rant on live television after another, working for us, unpaid, to expose Obama for what he actually is (an empty suit) and what he represents (the same old tired machine politics of the Left.)…and drive more and more voters to the GOP.

On a cost-per basis…I kinda like my money being saved while the other guy throws his money around and his friends under the bus at the same time.

I frakking hate the term “breeder.” The human race would grind to an astonishly quick halt if it weren’t for those of us who have children. Breeders are people who raise animals for commercial purposes; mothers are people who raise children for societal continuation.

Anna on September 6, 2008 at 4:46 PM

A new intolerance visits Provincetown

Police say they logged numerous complaints of straight people being called “breeders” by gays over the July Fourth holiday weekend. Jamaican workers reported being the target of racial slurs. And a woman was verbally accosted after signing a petition that opposed same-sex marriage, they said.

Just alphie, in the basement, alone…and yes, must be a horrible existence.

So, we allow him to post here…just to keep him in the basement. Do our bit for public safety.

coldwarrior on September 6, 2008 at 5:01 PM

I just got here to ee this story posted.

Wow.

I cannot believe how many parallels we are seeing to the 1988 campaign. Flag-burning was one of tye sillier side issues in that campaign. At one point the Bush camp laid it on so thick that they even had Bush visit a flag factory in New Jersey.

It’s amazing to me that Democrats never learn on stuff like this. It’s crass, it’s silly, but Republicans will ALWAYS use the flag if they can. I’m just waiting for the ad right before the last debate showing William Ayers standing on a flag. You know it’s coming.

rockmom on September 6, 2008 at 5:01 PM

BTW, it’s been a long time since I read Dispatches, but I think some it is was just fantasy.

I think back to the 80’s when I was into the hardcore/anarchist punk scene. I was the typical 17 year old liberal.

My sister had rented an apartment and she had a storage closet out in the back that had a trunk in it. It belonged to the lady who lived there before her. She had died and had no family, but her trunk in the storage shed had been overlooked by the county who came to move out her property. My sister told me to open the trunk and see what was in it. I busted the lock off and inside were all the belongings of the ladies son who had died in Vietnam.

I took the trunk home and over about a 2 week period I had read all the letters her son had written. His uniforms were in the trunk, along with his medals.

After two weeks of reading his letters I saw I reached a turning point and became a patriot. I had the flag that covered his casket on my bedroom wall upside down. I took it down and I loaded the trunk into my car and took it to our local Marine recruiting station. I told them all about it and said that I felt like it needed to be with them. I apologized for having unfolded the flag, and said I was truly sorry for having been so disrespectful to his sacrifice. They told me that with what I had told them, then his sacrifice wasn’t in vain if his death turned a young anarchist to a proud, freedom loving American.

That time changed my course in life. I wonder where I would have been of I had never found that trunk.

RobertInAustin on September 6, 2008 at 5:10 PM

Kieth Olbermann will undoubtedly point out that the DNC broke the flag rules – RIGHT?
