The Recycled Flags of the DNCC; Update: Pathetic spin by Team O

posted at 12:00 pm on September 6, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Democrats brought out tens of thousands of American flags to Invesco Field, saluting Barack Obama as he spoke from the Styrofoam columns of the Barackopolis at the conclusion of the Democratic convention.  Perhaps some of them took the flags home as souvenirs, but where did the rest go?  According to David Harsanyi, they went into the trash — and would have gone to a landfill, except for a worker at Invesco who rescued them from the dumpsters:

This morning, Republicans tell me that a worker at Invesco Field in Denver saved thousands of unused flags from the Democratic National Convention that were headed for the garbage. Guerrilla campaigning. They will use these flags at their own event today in Colorado Springs with John McCain and Sarah Palin.

Before McCain speaks today, veterans will haul these garbage bags filled with flags out onto the stage — with dramatic effect, no doubt — and tell the story.

Didn’t anyone make arrangements for better disposal of these flags from Invesco?  At the very least, they were an investment that could have been re-used at rallies in Colorado as well as the rest of the nation during the general election.  Instead, they’ve handed a dramatic moment to John McCain and Sarah Palin, as well as relieved them of the cost of 12,000 such flags — as well as a full 3′x5′ flag that also wound up in the trash.

Remember when the DNCC was supposed to be the “greenest convention ever”?  How they worried about the color of the food and using organic materials in their merchandise?  I guess we can see where the “green” concern ends … at red, white, and blue.

Still … I hope the RNCC did a better job rescuing discarded flags at the Xcel Center.

Update: If you want to know how to properly dispose of flags, you can check the US Flag Code. If you’re still confused, contact your local American Legion or VFW, and they will help you dispose of them.  (h/t: Indythinker in comments)

Update II: I’m getting e-mails saying that we need to “stop the lies” because Team Obama put this out as a statement:

Stories circulating about flags from the Democratic National Convention are false. More than 125,000 American-made flags were distributed at the Convention – any flags removed from the Convention after the event were taken without authorization.  It’s disappointing that someone would take American flags without authorization and then falsely describe their intended purpose. We have the utmost respect for the American flag and it’s sad to see them being used for a cheap political stunt.

They claim that the flags were “bundled” for return to their manufacturer.  If so, it’s the first time I’ve ever heard of anyone bundling returned merchandise in Hefty bags and storing them “in and around dumpsters” while awaiting the RMA.  Here’s the picture that ran in the Denver Post:

I sincerely doubt that these flags got sold to Team Obama in Hefty bags.  And let’s try to parse this story down with some common sense:

  • Why would a manufacturer provide a refund on open product?  They certainly couldn’t resell them, especially not after being left like this at Invesco.
  • 12,000 flags must have cost at least $2,000 or so, and probably more.  Once Democrats discovered the “theft”, why didn’t they report it to the police?  It’s been more than a week apparently since they were “stolen”, and Team Obama just discovered it?
  • Leaving material in and around dumpsters, especially in Hefty bags, makes it look like trash.  That’s hardly a way to store American flags, and it’s certainly not a way to keep janitors and waste management people from taking them to landfills.

Instead of just saying that their people made a really stupid error and apologizing, though, Team Obama decided to tell a ridiculous lie to get themselves off the hook.

Update III: David Harsanyi now has several updates to his first report, including this:

I just spoke with the person at Invesco who found the flags and he thinks both sides are exaggerating a bit. The person claims the majority of the bags with flags in them were near the trash, on a dock, and would have been thrown away. The person thinks it was probably an “oversight” by the Democrats rather than any nefarious plot against the flag. But the person doesn’t believe anyone was coming to get them: “The flags were there for a week and a day and no one came looking for them.”

No one suggested here that it was a “nefarious plot”, and like Harsanyi, I hardly think that Obama would have directed his staff to throw 12,000 American flags in a dumpster.  In fact, until Team Obama issued this ludicrous statement, the story didn’t have anything to do with them.   However, the obvious carelessness with which the DNCC treated the flags is a rather revealing moment for them, and the lie for people in Obama’s organization.

Update IV: Gateway Pundit has pictures of individual flags sitting in trash bags, but that’s not the DNCC’s fault; it’s the fault of the individuals who threw out their flags.  The DNCC couldn’t possibly be expected to sort through all of the thousands of bags of normal trash.  They can be expected to know better than to toss 12,000 American flags in with it.

Jazz Shaw’s following the story at TMV.

I am something of a packrat and I have this novelty American Flag that came in a flower arrangement, and which, in every effort to get rid clutter, I cannot bring myself to throw away.

I also remember a very solemn ceremony we had at day camp years ago. The American flag we had was worn out and we all stood, silently, in formation, while the union was cut away and burned first, then the stripes. We were just children, but we understood the symbolism and were quite impressed.

cheeflo on September 6, 2008 at 1:20 PM

Makes me wonder what happened to the prop flags handed out at the May Day Rally’s supporting illegal immigration.

You think all those Amnesty Americans took those flags home to fly or did they toss them on their way back to their cars with the Mexican flag stickers in the rear window?

TheCulturalist on September 6, 2008 at 1:20 PM

1GooDDaDDy on September 6, 2008 at 1:16 PM

Don’t bother, you are wasting your time…

Liberals believe in nothing. No Divine Judgement… no principlas worth REALLY fighting for (beyond words or court cases), and especialy don’t understand that a symbol can actualy mean somthing…

Look at how they desecrate the cross, and call it “art”…

Conservatives generaly think that some things ARE worth fighting for… and thank God our Forefathers thought that way, or we would not HAVE a country. They believe that symbols REPRESENT somthing… like Old Glory represents the best of America…

That the Dems would trash it, not thinking its important, is just in their nature.

Romeo13 on September 6, 2008 at 1:22 PM

The treatment of the flag is part of our federal laws, and is clearly spekked out in the United States Code:

“(b) The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.”
This would shut down just about every retail store in the country.
“(d) The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery.” Like this?

Send_Me on September 6, 2008 at 1:24 PM

I can’t wait to see the Boy Scouts handing out the flags live on national tv.

HawaiiLwyr on September 6, 2008 at 12:52 PM

Aloha Kakahiaka, I can’t wait to see that either.
I’m wondering about those that tossed those flags.

Did they even care or even think about what they were doing as they left the stadium? Do they look at the flag as a symbol of patriotism or as just some symbol without meaning. What were the demographics of those who threw the flags away? Young people with no understanding of civics or older people with Bill Ayers view of America?

Are they like those that want to ban plastic bags here? ^_^

It’s extremely likely that this was the fault of a disposal service hired to clean up after the convention, rather than the Democratic Party.

And just what was the GOP guy doing trash diving anyways?

jim m on September 6, 2008 at 1:00 PM

It is also “extremely likely” that it is the responsibility of the Democratic Party to make sure that the “disposal service” hired to clean up does the job correctly following all proper and expected procedures and applicable laws. They did the hiring and pay the bills. They are responsible.

More importantly, can you please provide the proof you have in your possession that provides the political affiliation of said dumpster diver. Oh.. I know. He/she respected the flag, therefore must be a “GOP” guy. Ding!!!! Ding!!!! Clue light on!!!

The only ‘problem’ here for McCain is that this news came out on a Saturday.

Hopefully, though, he’ll have incorporated this image into a new ad that will be released Monday.

That is a very, very, very powerful image (the flags in the trash) and it might very well be the final nail in the coffin of the Obama campaign.

As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

TheBigOldDog on September 6, 2008 at 1:30 PM

I don’t like to see the flag used as a campaign tool – it diminishes what the flag stands for. I hope they distribute the flags in a solemn manner and then shut up about it. Let the media make of it what they will, but Republicans should not make this an issue.

It will make us no better than those that treated the flags in this demeaning manner if we seek to profit from it.

If Dems blame clean up company does that then mean Bin Laden is not responsible for 9/11…..After all, it was the terrorists on the planes that were responsible for flying them.

If Dems blame clean up company does that then mean Bush is not responsible for Katrina…..After all it was Mayor Nagin that would not use the school buses, the Governor that would not allow FEMA in her state, and the Army Core of Eng. that built the leeves.

In this town, on July 4th and on Flag Day the Boy Scouts line the streets with small flags spaced about 25 yards apart. The next morning, these Scouts and local volunteers go about town to pick up these flags. Quite a few times we’ve had residents and business owners come out and ask us to leave the Flags where they are. They’ll make sure they are taken care of. And they do. Never saw this sort of thing once in all my years living in DC. Yet, another reason why I left the Beltway and moved back to the Midwest.

It should not be embroidered, printed or otherwise impressed on such articles as cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes, or anything intended to be discarded after temporary use. Advertising signs should not be attached to the staff or halyard.

The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman and members of patriotic organizations.

The flag should never be used for receiving, holding, carrying, or delivering anything.

Kerry ’04? Made a campaign stop in this town. The local Dem party handed out “passes” for locals to be part of the crowd, didn’t matter if you were Dem or Republican, or just interested in being there. When Kerry and Edwards arrived, with over 75 buses filled with paid supporters, the local Dem party committee was informed that they didn’t need locals to be the back drop, they brought along their own people. All of them were wearing coordinated clothing and t-shirts, and coordinated signs. The locals were relegated to the periphery. The cost to the city for providing necessarty security and EMT support? To this day, despite several promises from ’04 to ’06, never re-imbursed by the Kerry Campaign.

Bush took the county vote by a hefty margin in ’04. Despite it being a heavily Democrat county.

[BTW, if you can run the photos down, this town is the source of that wonderful "Manchurian Candidate" photo with Kerry on the podium and the marquee of the local theater showing the current movie being shown. Priceless. No one on the Kerry staff gave that large movie marquee a thought when they staked out the photo aspects of Kerry's visit.]

Thus, in the manner of Kerry Khan, the Obama camp will try to foist the blame for this Flag episode on anyone but themselves.

Uh, saving a few American Flags from the landfill?

“Dumpster diving” is a time-honored way for the poor to increase their holdings. The “GOP guy” is now 12,000 American Flags richer — an immense measure of wealth. The Democrats probably tried to give them away but couldn’t find takers — the flags don’t have that pastel blue color they seem to be enamoured with.

So, I do have to give the wealthy Democrats credit — in true Biblical fashion, they left the gleanings of their field to the poor Republican.

By the way, I’d like to buy one of these flags. When do they go on sale?

Cindy Munford on September 6, 2008 at 2:01 PM

They collect them over by the arugula bins…

rhodeymark on September 6, 2008 at 2:02 PM

I could be wrong, but…

It seems that the workers who picked up the flags at the end of the convention went to the trouble of bundling them and putting them in separate bags, apart from the garbage that they also picked up. Apparently, they assumed that the hosts would want them. My guess: they were told to just toss the flags and at least one of them (probably more) couldn’t bring himself to do that.

So, um, where’s our resident trolls? Nothing to say about this? Hmmm… – Et tu Brute on September 6, 2008 at 1:45 PM

J_Gocht burped and farted briefly on a couple of the other threads. I stomped on him twice and then he vanished – presumable in a flurry of desperation to dig up more dirt on the Arctic Fox - even while Barry Buffoon is sinking like the Titanic.

ManlyRash on September 6, 2008 at 2:03 PM

Fox is showing the flags on stage live as i type.

CanadianGuy on September 6, 2008 at 2:03 PM

Fox os showing it right now! All the garbage bags lying on the stage!

Fantastic!!

dustoffmom on September 6, 2008 at 2:03 PM

Passing out flags now on FOXN

Over.

From a commenter at Ace Hq:

I guess Obama just threw Betsy Ross under the bus.

tru2tx on September 6, 2008 at 1:50 PM

Merci beaucoup! LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is not the flag he once knew!

Kirsten Powers last night said they are on the defense and off message. You ain’t joking!

Sooooo glad to see the McCain/Palin campaign staff fighting back on those Howard Guffman comments made on Laura’s show Friday. I was so mad that I sent Laura two emails! It was beyond insane! I hate it for the Palin family, but I hope the loons keep this up because people are going to go off in the booths this November!

I am going to be painting with a broad brush here for a minute but the first time I heard about this non-payment of vendors was on 60 Minutes (I think). The did a story about vendors who had not been paid by the John Glenn campaign, two years after the election. I hope it is a blue thing. Not that I want any vendors not to be paid.

Cindy Munford on September 6, 2008 at 2:04 PM

This David Jumanji guy is an excellent example of worthless MSM J-school gutter stain:
.

I’m not sure what the DNC was supposed to do with unused hand-flags, frankly. But the Republicans are obviously questioning someone’s patriotism here

.

Isn’t it enough that they DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO with the unused flags?

-heh-

Religious_Zealot on September 6, 2008 at 2:05 PM

These are pretty nice flags, not tacky little paper ones. I can’t believe so many Dems would just dump them on the floor at the convention.

CanadianGuy on September 6, 2008 at 2:05 PM

Carl Cameron on Fox is reporting that McCain staff have asked that if anyone doesn’t want to take the flags home, return them to the staff members and they will be placed at cemeteries and other memorials around the country.

Kevin71 on September 6, 2008 at 2:06 PM

The secret is out.

Obama’s reason for confiscating all the guns is to keep the Democrats from constantly shooting themselves in the foot.

pocomoco on September 6, 2008 at 2:06 PM

I love watching these flags being passed out. I want one! In fact I need to go to the store today and buy a flag. I just moved into a house from a condo – my house looks naked!

*sigh*

I can. This is not the Democratic Party of John F. Kennedy.

ManlyRash on September 6, 2008 at 2:07 PM

On FOX…over 12,000 flags, twelve thousand, 12 and three zero’s, from small 3×5 hand flags to a good number of full size parade flags, found in bags and in dumpsters at Invesco, are now being handed out to people at the Colorado Springs rally…and these folks are scooping them up.

No way Obama is going to be able to ignore this one.

coldwarrior on September 6, 2008 at 2:07 PM

As with the selection of Governor Palin, Senator McCain has every right to expose the unforced errors of his adversary. Politics ain’t beanbag, and a genuine war hero is allowed to rescue the flag any way he chooses. He loves the flag, remember?

rhodeymark on September 6, 2008 at 1:49 PM

McCain can let the media feast on this issue for a couple of news cycles.

The unemployment number yesterday was worse than had been forecast. The Palin pick is very positive for several reasons, but ultimately this election will likely come down to the economy as the dominant issue, not flags or pins.

They need to avoid additional Phil Gramm type mistakes, even Kudlow has called the current economic problems a “type of recession”. McCain can win on this issue but he still has a lot of work to do.

Rove – you magnificent bastard!!!

Fuquay Steve on September 6, 2008 at 2:09 PM

Obama, on Fix, live…doing his Flip Wilson gig…talking about the GOP “They must think you’re stupid! Snicker, snicker.” Not a lot of people in his crowd, a handful compared to Colorado Springs.

coldwarrior on September 6, 2008 at 2:10 PM

Fiox = FOX dammit!

coldwarrior on September 6, 2008 at 2:10 PM

coldwarrior on September 6, 2008 at 2:11 PM

take ‘em to Wal-Mart ahole

Wal-Mart? That evil, soulless big box corporation that won’t allow their employees to unionize and won’t pay for their health care? The only reason the libs would have taken flags to Wal-Mart would be to burn them in a bonfire during a protest in the parking lot.

Kevin71 on September 6, 2008 at 2:12 PM

This is great on a day when everyone is hoping for their new Sarah fix on TV. Perfect lead-in story of the day to Greta’s special “American Woman”

econavenger on September 6, 2008 at 2:13 PM

The flag is just a prop for Obama, of course. What does one expect from a candidate whose political career was launched at the home of a terrorist who has no qualms stomping on a flag for a photo op?

Kudos to the vets who saved them, the crowd of McCain/Palin supporters who accepted them, and FOX for covering this story.

Disturb the Universe on September 6, 2008 at 2:13 PM

Each of those medium sized flags cost over $1.00×12,000, well do the math.

That would be our tax dollars being thrown in the trash if Bambi gets in the White House.

Over.
