The Recycled Flags of the DNCC; Update: Pathetic spin by Team O

Democrats brought out tens of thousands of American flags to Invesco Field, saluting Barack Obama as he spoke from the Styrofoam columns of the Barackopolis at the conclusion of the Democratic convention.  Perhaps some of them took the flags home as souvenirs, but where did the rest go?  According to David Harsanyi, they went into the trash — and would have gone to a landfill, except for a worker at Invesco who rescued them from the dumpsters:

This morning, Republicans tell me that a worker at Invesco Field in Denver saved thousands of unused flags from the Democratic National Convention that were headed for the garbage. Guerrilla campaigning. They will use these flags at their own event today in Colorado Springs with John McCain and Sarah Palin.

Before McCain speaks today, veterans will haul these garbage bags filled with flags out onto the stage — with dramatic effect, no doubt — and tell the story.

Didn’t anyone make arrangements for better disposal of these flags from Invesco?  At the very least, they were an investment that could have been re-used at rallies in Colorado as well as the rest of the nation during the general election.  Instead, they’ve handed a dramatic moment to John McCain and Sarah Palin, as well as relieved them of the cost of 12,000 such flags — as well as a full 3′x5′ flag that also wound up in the trash.

Remember when the DNCC was supposed to be the “greenest convention ever”?  How they worried about the color of the food and using organic materials in their merchandise?  I guess we can see where the “green” concern ends … at red, white, and blue.

Still … I hope the RNCC did a better job rescuing discarded flags at the Xcel Center.

Update: If you want to know how to properly dispose of flags, you can check the US Flag Code. If you’re still confused, contact your local American Legion or VFW, and they will help you dispose of them.  (h/t: Indythinker in comments)

Update II: I’m getting e-mails saying that we need to “stop the lies” because Team Obama put this out as a statement:

Stories circulating about flags from the Democratic National Convention are false. More than 125,000 American-made flags were distributed at the Convention – any flags removed from the Convention after the event were taken without authorization.  It’s disappointing that someone would take American flags without authorization and then falsely describe their intended purpose. We have the utmost respect for the American flag and it’s sad to see them being used for a cheap political stunt.

They claim that the flags were “bundled” for return to their manufacturer.  If so, it’s the first time I’ve ever heard of anyone bundling returned merchandise in Hefty bags and storing them “in and around dumpsters” while awaiting the RMA.  Here’s the picture that ran in the Denver Post:

I sincerely doubt that these flags got sold to Team Obama in Hefty bags.  And let’s try to parse this story down with some common sense:

  • Why would a manufacturer provide a refund on open product?  They certainly couldn’t resell them, especially not after being left like this at Invesco.
  • 12,000 flags must have cost at least $2,000 or so, and probably more.  Once Democrats discovered the “theft”, why didn’t they report it to the police?  It’s been more than a week apparently since they were “stolen”, and Team Obama just discovered it?
  • Leaving material in and around dumpsters, especially in Hefty bags, makes it look like trash.  That’s hardly a way to store American flags, and it’s certainly not a way to keep janitors and waste management people from taking them to landfills.

Instead of just saying that their people made a really stupid error and apologizing, though, Team Obama decided to tell a ridiculous lie to get themselves off the hook.

Update III: David Harsanyi now has several updates to his first report, including this:

I just spoke with the person at Invesco who found the flags and he thinks both sides are exaggerating a bit. The person claims the majority of the bags with flags in them were near the trash, on a dock, and would have been thrown away. The person thinks it was probably an “oversight” by the Democrats rather than any nefarious plot against the flag. But the person doesn’t believe anyone was coming to get them: “The flags were there for a week and a day and no one came looking for them.”

No one suggested here that it was a “nefarious plot”, and like Harsanyi, I hardly think that Obama would have directed his staff to throw 12,000 American flags in a dumpster.  In fact, until Team Obama issued this ludicrous statement, the story didn’t have anything to do with them.   However, the obvious carelessness with which the DNCC treated the flags is a rather revealing moment for them, and the lie for people in Obama’s organization.

Update IV: Gateway Pundit has pictures of individual flags sitting in trash bags, but that’s not the DNCC’s fault; it’s the fault of the individuals who threw out their flags.  The DNCC couldn’t possibly be expected to sort through all of the thousands of bags of normal trash.  They can be expected to know better than to toss 12,000 American flags in with it.

Jazz Shaw’s following the story at TMV.

Forget “better” – this was not a proper way to dispose of flags (which should only be done when they are no longer usable).

Carl Cameron just said on Fox News that thousands of people are waiting for McCain/Palin at their next stop. Cars bumper to bumper for miles, and several thousands standing on the tarmac.

sven10077 on September 6, 2008 at 12:06 PM

I heard about this. Didn’t want to believe it. You’d think maybe at least one of these Dem convention organizers would know better. Maybe call the American Legion or the VFW to dispose of/dispense these Flags appropriately? I guess the National Colors mean nothing but window treatments or interior design motifs or colorful decoration to them. And, yet, we cannot doubt their patriotism?

The Dems…not green, certainly not red, white or blue.

I strongly wish the GOP makes a major campaign ad out of this.

The Dems just handed McCain a devastating image/analogy.

[voiceover - picture of flag waving Dems at convention] The Democrats claim to love this country, to be patriotic.

[picture of empty stadium, maybe a shot of them packing up]But when the lights are turned off and the cameras leave…

[picture of flags in garbage bags]…their patriotism becomes as disposable as their trash.

[picture of John McCain]The choice this November is clear – you can vote for the party of disposable patriotism, or the party that lives and breathes patriotism.

The McCain campaign has been coming out with one good punch after another. Very nice. Now he just needs to have Sarah communicate an energy policy and tie that to the economy and national security. And McCain needs to articulate a tax policy. Yes, I know he has one. And I know he has talked about it. He just hasn’t connected yet. And he needs too.

Have Sarah call em out on it in a hot new commercial. John McCain is a “permanent patriot” she could say.

They can lead in to the new points here with her convention speech line about the styrofoam greek columns and an empty campaign (of an empty suit).

Les in NC on September 6, 2008 at 12:20 PM

I wouldn’t miss the opportunity to hit on the green angle either. The flags would be a reusable item for rallies and campaign events, but were thrown out, wasteful and about as in keeping with the “greenest convention ever” as Nancy Pelosi is in keeping with “most ethical congress ever”.

RDuke on September 6, 2008 at 12:20 PM

I saw a vet nearly go to blows with someone because they allowed an American flag to touch the floor. This incident just highlights the major, major differences between conservatives and liberals. There really are two Americas…but not the poor vs the rich, but the slovenly opportunistic savages that would desecrate the symbols of freedom, and the other half, who would raise their fists and sacrifice their liberty to defend the same.

CapitalistPig on September 6, 2008 at 12:20 PM

This makes me sick. We respect our flags and when one is worn it gets folded properly and taken to the VFW for proper disposal. We NEVER let our flag lay on the ground. I do hope an ad is made of this to show how the d’s treat our flag.

letget on September 6, 2008 at 12:20 PM

One thing I noticed about the GOP Convention was that there were a lot more shouting of “U.S.A.” and not so much of “McCain”. When certain issues were brought up instead of shouting the name of the candidate it was more about the country and not the individual. That is not to say the delegates did not shout for Palin or McCain, but it was not in the zombie like manner “Obama” was chanted by the crowds at Barakopolis. My kids suggested the DNC delegates and those attending the Barakopolis gathering reminded them of the movie “The Mummy” when the crowds were following the Mummy around shouting “Imotep!” with their arms outstretched. LOL!

As to the flags, it looked like to us in the land of guns, small towns, dove season, SEC, and Bibles, (redneck Southernville), that the DNC delegates 1) over did it with the flags, 2) needed someone to tell them when to wave them and 3) had some snazzy, mass produced signs to wave. We kinda of liked the homemade posters at the RNC and the not so over the top flag presence. The shouting of “U.S.A.” provided words to the deeds.

Of course since we are not of the “cosmopolitan” crowd, and I am a clippy wearing soccer mom; I must provide a full disclosure of not being a big fan of THE ONE COMMUNITY ORGANIZER MANCHILD. But with that being said, way to go DNC! Just another act in a long list of sliming this country, and the flag you guys constantly want to burn or spread feces on! Wow, what a way to obtain the votes of those of us that live between the parentheses! The RNC in Denver should put these flags on Ebay!

freeus on September 6, 2008 at 12:20 PM

Now what McCain needs to do is ask people to keep the flags as souveniers OR “turn them in as you leave — we can give them to veterans groups to place on veterans graves throughout America.”

johnsteele on September 6, 2008 at 12:21 PM

Just imagine the hippies crying from the dead trees that were senselessly slaughtered and clear cut to make all the little wooden sticks of those flags that were thrown away by the democrats to go to the landfill.

econavenger on September 6, 2008 at 12:17 PM

“Temporary” and “disposable” are fairly synonymous in this context and putting them together actually negates what you’re trying to say.

Using just one or the either is enough – “Temporary Election Patriotism” or (my preference) “Disposable Election Patriotism”.

dugan on September 6, 2008 at 12:24 PM

This, sadly, is not at all that uncommon. Check out the local fairgrounds or city street after a Veteran’s Day or Independence Day parade or celebration. In fairness, this isn’t solely a “Democrat” issue. How do I know this? As a Boy Scout, I’ve marched in a just a few parades and picked up my share of flags afterward.
Do they still teach the Flag Code in school? Considering how many people I see wearing shirts, ties, or jackets composed of our National Flag and homes flying the flag at night without a light shining on it, I’m guessing no.

In this town, on July 4th and on Flag Day the Boy Scouts line the streets with small flags spaced about 25 yards apart. The next morning, these Scouts and local volunteers go about town to pick up these flags. Quite a few times we’ve had residents and business owners come out and ask us to leave the Flags where they are. They’ll make sure they are taken care of. And they do. Never saw this sort of thing once in all my years living in DC. Yet, another reason why I left the Beltway and moved back to the Midwest.

Hey, I have a question for anybody in the KNOW. My son (part-time rock star) says that establishments that play music have to pay for some kind of waiver that allows them to play music without violating the copyright laws. Can’t the campaign pay that fee and tell all of these liberal musicians to go pound sand?

Cindy Munford on September 6, 2008 at 12:30 PM

I disagree completely. I think both temporary and disposable together locks the image in the brain better. Temporary hits the 60 days and fake Dem patriotism is gone point. Disposable hits the point that for the left, nothing sacred is worth preserving in our society. It’s a 1-2 punch the Obama glass jaw.

Despicable, but all too predictable. The flag to them is nothing more than a prop, just like those fake greek columns, and the only prupose in using the flags was to create a “perception”. A facade.

I was a little surprised that the author of that piece questioned just what the DEms were supposed to do with a bunch of “hand flags”. The treatment of the flag is part of our federal laws, and is clearly spekked out in the United States Code:

http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/4/8.html

One would think that an esteemed “constitutional law professor” would have some familiarity with the laws of the United States.

And, by the way, I DO question their partiotism.

Just hopped over to RNC’s website and reviewed the photos and videos quickly – just like I recalled, the RNC didn’t use thousands of flags as props like the Dems did. Can’t imagane what the Dems response to this will be, but I’m sure they’re flipping out as we speak!

Some of those flags in the bags seem pretty big.

It looks not only like the party’s found its next Reagan. It seems it’s found its next Rove. Rick Davis has been running this campaign like Joe Montana. If they pull this out, this campaign will be studied for decades.

Confirmed by Carl Cameron. Just showed one of the trash bags. 84 trash bags full rescued from Invesco dumpsters…wow

Another unforced error. Damn it Barry, get your shit together.

Bottom line: if the Dems were planning to recycle or re-use these flags, just how did the McCain campaign come to possess them then?!

I think we all believe we know the answer to this one.

OTOH, “temporary disposable” sounds like ‘temporary’ is modifying ‘disposable’.

I.E. they are only disposable NOW – a short term, one-time thing and that later it will mean something.

I understand exactly what you are trying to say and agree almost completely.

My only nit to pick (besides some grammatical discussions), is that I don’t think their patriotism is temporary at all.

That would indicate that they HAD patriotism at one point.

Their “patriotism” is a mask they put on when the camera lights are on. It’s not even real when they are acting it out.

Now, I know that not all Dems and Libs are un-patriotic.

But too many of them (including many leaders in their party) lift up the world community at the expense of America.

Our laws aren’t good enough – we need to bow to other countries laws.

Our actions abroad are ALWAYS wrong and whenever someone else commits an evil atrocity it’s always, somehow OUR fault.

We may have our problems and we are far from perfect, but we are still the greatest country in the world and I’m very proud to be a citizen.
