Polls: McCain gets solid marks for speech in Survey USA, shaves six points off Obama’s lead in Gallup

An uncharacteristic care package o’ optimism to tide you over for a few hours. The meme du jour isn’t Palinmania but the after-the-fact rave reviews for McCain’s speech trickling in from unlikely sources. Sample error? Maybe not: Check out the grading in Survey USA’s new national poll. For some reason the data from Tampa specifically is getting attention today, but in fact the speech played almost as well across the country as it did down there. Gallup’s got him within two now nationally after trailing by eight just four days ago; a solid effort in one of the most watched speeches in history will do that for you, I guess. Obligatory pessimistic note: Be sure to note the party breakdowns in the SUSA poll, especially on the single-issue questions, as most of McCain’s advantage comes not from independents but Republicans skewing heavily his way.
Exit question: Are we sure Palinmania isn’t the meme du jour? The AP seems to have a stage-four case of it. As does, er, Red State Update.

Wow! I thought the Palin speech would put the polls back even and McCain’s wouldnt do much, but it could give him a decent lead!
We shall see on Monday

I like question #9, if they were to place a bet, who would win the election? More Republicans are willing to put their money on McCain than Dems on Obama. Call it a more accurate Intrade method of gaging enthusiam and gut feelings on which way this race is going.

Aww, isn’t alphie cute? He desperately tries to be optimistic even though he knows that polls skew heavily to the left to begin with, as well as knowing that people were predicting a double digit bounce from the DNC convention, along with knowing that anything below a double digit lead spells disaster for Obama (forget only a 2 point lead).

Alphie, you gonna be here Nov 6 to take it as you deserve?

I have had several Democratic friends and family go absolutely nuts about Palin in the last week. They are really shook up. They would politely tollerate my support of McCain (I do not talk politics with my Dem friends so much, because it is a good way to save friendships). But lately they have been going into rants, some of them almost violent in nature.
For Obama supporters it was not supposed to be like this. That is why they are acting so crazy. I am pleasantly suprised by the turn of McCain’s fortune.
It is not that Obama is a terrorist, he most certainly is not, but Obama is definitely part of the shady and corrupt world of Chicago politics–which is what the ties to Rezko, Ayers and Dohrn show. And these ties also show the hypocrisy of Obama’s new poltics of change. It is more than merely having a few friends who commited crimes in the past, it is owing actual favors to these criminals.

If the polls say they are dead even then Republicans are ahead by 8 – 12 points.
Liberals stock in trade is self-delusion.

keep in mind Gallup is a 3 day rolling poll so you are also getting the results of the last two days.
Obama’s bumb hit full circle about 5 days after the convention.
William Amos on September 6, 2008 at 6:23 PM
……. and the difference is?
Seven Percent Solution on September 6, 2008 at 6:23 PM
No, alphie’s right. RCP averages show the GOP behind. But IMHO two positive signs are: (1) Since 9/2/08, the RCP average has shrunk from a 7-point Obama lead to 2.5 and (2) In late June, McCain was averaging 40%, recently he hit 46 in Rasmussen, 45 in Gallup and 48 in CNN polling. Not only does the GOP have the momentum, but they seem to have broken through that 44%-ceiling they were stuck with since December
LastRick on September 6, 2008 at 6:24 PM
Hmmmmm. Not to mention that Obama-Biden was carried on 10 networks vs. 6, and that it took 3 business days for the bounce to materialize.
I wouldn’t worry if I were you, alphie.

Maxx on September 6, 2008 at 6:25 PM
I watched McCain’s speech and I watched Obama’s speech. Leaving aside everything else, I think McCain’s speech was more “memorable” – and I mean that in a very specific way.
I can distinctly recall perhaps two lines from Obama’s speech: the lie about $5 million defining wealth and the disingenuous accusation that McCain will not go to Osama’s cave.
In contrast, I find myself thinking about various parts of McCain’s speech – his confession re: Republican failures, his confession “they broke me”, his confession of youthful arrogance, his call to serve a cause greater than oneself and the admonition that one will thereby find happiness, etc.
We get immediate reactions to the speech, but isn’t a better indication of it’s value the extent to which it continues as a subject of thought over time?
Poorly phrased/explained, perhaps, but I’m thinking that McCain’s speech actually grows in power with the passage of time. Listening to a speech is a very passive activity. Continuing to think about it a very active process. McCain’s speech may not have been all that engaging in the moment – it was not so entertaining (they say.) But to the extent it engages people over days, it might be very powerful, very influential.
I’m biased, of course.
Is anyone else having the same sort of experience?
Steve_Roberts on September 6, 2008 at 6:25 PM
The AP’s not actually excited about Palin. They’re eager to spread the Obama campaign’s new meme about how Palin is more popular than McCain. The hope that by election day leaners’ enthusiasm will turn into an “well, I’d vote for the Republicans if she was on the *top* of the ticket” self-provided excuse to pull the lever for The One.
omriceren on September 6, 2008 at 6:26 PM
It that necessary? He might be a troll (your opinion not mine), but it’s not because he’s a liberal. How can we say that when just hours ago some of us were excited at the idea of a liberal (Lieberman) as Sec of State? There can be good liberals even if they don’t agree with you.
LastRick on September 6, 2008 at 6:27 PM
This is point made a lot. No one ever remembers anything Obama says. I remember lines from McCain’s and Palin’s speech.
lorien1973 on September 6, 2008 at 6:29 PM
But I do not that Alphie is worried enough to constantly come into every thread and point out that Obama is till leading.
Sweating a little there alphie ?
William Amos on September 6, 2008 at 6:30 PM
Steve, though I felt that McCain’s entire evening was excruciatingly boring and even painful at times (I like Cindy and think she is lovely, but I got tired of watching her shake her head and talk s-l-o-w-l-y, and Ridge bored me to tears), I did come away with something very positive:
Anyone looking at John McCain, love him or hate him, could not deny that he is a man of deep substance.
You can’t say that about Obama. It is a stark contrast.
And that will resonate with people, I hope…and I pray.
capitalist piglet on September 6, 2008 at 6:30 PM
I think McCain’s speech was original and sincere, that is what Independents respond to.
I do not know if he will overtake Obama or not, but it is looking a lot more promising.
Terrye on September 6, 2008 at 6:33 PM
The polls are rigged….I never believe them.
The MSM (aka Democrat research department) KNOWS that if McCain/Palin show leads in the polls, that their voters will just not turn out. They cannot afford to show a Repub lead and they will not.
They will rig the polls all the way to November….book it. When the landslide happens for McCain/Palin they will claim “cheating;” after all, the “polls” were showing it close all this time.
Ladies and gentlemen, we need to break the MSM’s Soviet-style grip on America.

mikeyboss on September 6, 2008 at 6:34 PM
The one main thing that struck me about McCain’s speech, and I knew going into it that he doesn’t do speeches very well at all, was when he was talking about his POW experience, and the goosebumps were rising on my arms, was the though that Barack just cannot beat his story. He can’t be beat when it comes down to it.
I heard his story so many times that I’m almost tempted to roll my eyes, but to hear it from the man himself, put it into a whole different context.
I am enthusiastic about voting for McCain/Palin 08.
Geronimo on September 6, 2008 at 6:37 PM
Piglet, (sorry, I almost feel bad typing that…lol)
I wonder if Obama would not have done better if he had given more narrative of his own. Many have observed that he has yet to “close the deal” with the public and that “we don’t know him.” Could these two points be related?
I would never vote for Obama, but when I read the recent article on his “community organizer” days (don’t hate me) I liked him more, and trusted him a little more. It seems to me that his idealism in those days was probably real. The fact that he became disenchanted with life as an organizer is understandable.
I wish he would tell me more about what he’s done, why he’s done it and how it’s affected him. He may turn out to be the next president and I’d really like to know who he is.

I also noticed that the “sexual afterglow” the MSM had over Obama’s acceptance speech the night before turned to a look of sheer horror since Sarah Palin arrived to the central stage. The MSM has not recovered from it.
We should ask around to see how many people remember the words from Obama’s speech, in comparison to Sarah’s or McCain’s. I can guarantee you that most will remember the words of the latter ones, but only the smoke and mirrors of the former.

I’m a little surprised at the polling results on McCain’s speech. But, then, when you look at the message of that speech, the surprise lessens. Then, as you look at his “…and they broke me,” that raised a lump in the throat and the mist in the eyes…and the rest of the speech took off…and he had the crowd in the palm of his hand and in the depths of his heart from that point forward.
I’m not voting for McCain because he is a great orator. He isn’t one. If you want stentorian oratory go ask Ted Kennedy in his heyday, or John Kerry or maybe Huey Long, or Father Coughlin, or maybe that wannabe painter from Brunau am Inn, Austria.
If you want simple honest emotion and a “narrative” that rings true because it is true…then, yes,McCain has it.
I wish McCain could raise his arms over his head like we can, to show that honest emotion of victory, one he truly deserves, today and will on November 5th…but he can’t.
As he said, “…they broke me.”

Let’s see, California and New York represent about 70 electoral votes between them right? Does alphie think that Obama can win an American election without America?
Oh but alphie thinks Jesusland is just bleeding those poor liberals dry.
Never mind that Obama wants to put more people on welfare, make the government bigger, in fact he wants to nationalize health care. That fact has given him a enormous boast of cult followers.

If this is so you Karl Marx loving commies will have one and in that case your side and our side will have ultimately lost.

alphie:
The press self identifies as about 80% liberal Democrat. 13% conservative. I shudder to think what the remaining the 7% are.
They are just calling it as they see it and they see it from a perspective that is biased and out of step with most Americans.
And the truth is that if you honestly believe all those polls about the election, the majority also say the press is biased, they want Obama to win. In fact overall approval ratings for the press are just about as sucky as Nancy Pelosi’s. And that is saying something.
So, it is not just the wingnuts who think the press is biased, most Americans think the press is biased.
Terrye on September 6, 2008 at 6:57 PM
Better polls to come. If McCain makes up that 8 point difference and maybe pulls up 1 or 2, his convention was better than Obama’s. Plus Republicans have a lot of post convention upside with Palin; Obama is looking old and busted right now. With no change (heh!) in sight for him.

MobileVideoEngineer on September 6, 2008 at 6:57 PM
AP,
Good call on the pessimistic note, but…
…54% of independents gave the speech either an A or a B.
…twice as many independents said their opinion of John McCain went up than went down.
…by seven percentage points, independents believe that Republicans are more willing to be bipartisan.
That said…
…Obama leads McCain among independents on all the “who would do better” questions including, troublesomely, both Iraq and energy independence (though both were within the margin of error).
McCain and Palin are going to need to spend the next few months convincing the American people that they understand how to address the problems of energy, health care, and education better than their opponents.
I do wonder, though, whether the percentage of Republicans surveyed indicates a shift in self-identification numbers. Also, the self-identification percentages for those who watched both speeches (which means all the “who would do better” questions) was much closer to the expected third/third/third ratio we’re used to seeing.

Democrats punch a few points above their weight in the polls. Republicans always gain a few points in elections. Why that is is a matter of debate, but the fact is a matter of history.
I actually read on a left-leaning site today that no Democrat has prevailed who didn’t have a ten to fifteen point advantage coming out of August. I don’t know if that’s true; so few Democrats have won the Presidency in modern (polling) times, the sample must be quite small.

Someone was looking for a good story to pin on Palin.
“Who is this uncircumcised Philistine?!” (made me chuckle in church every time)
And the Philistine cursed David by his gods, but David replied: This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down, and cut off your head; and I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, and that all this assembly may know that Yahweh saves not with sword and spear; for the battle is Yahweh’s and he will give you into our hand.
David then strikes Goliath with a stone from his sling, and the Philistine falls on his face to the ground. David seizes the sword of the giant and kills him, and cuts off his head. The Philistines flee and are pursued by the Israelites as far as Gath and the gates of Ekron. David puts the armor of Goliath in his own tent, and takes the head to Jerusalem where the cowardly King Saul sends his chief of staff Abner to inquire whose son this is who routed the Philistines and killed their champion. Abner brings David before Saul, who asks him whose son he is, “And David answered, “I am the son of your servant Jesse of Bethlehem.”
King Saul wouldn’t go, and none of his best warriors would, either. David’s brothers begged him not to go. But their baby David insisted on going with only his staff and his slingshot, trusting the battle was God’s to win. That’s where humility amalgamates with faith. You do what you must the best to your ability with what you know best and have at hand, and trust in God to carry through God’s will in God’s speed.
For me, I Samuel 17 illustrates what we have between the MSM Philistine DNC Champion Goliath Obama challenging Israel as God and Country First championed by the bold David as McCain and his slingshot ticket armed with the Alaskan pebble Palin. Amazin’ Palin, McCain’s All American Pearl of Great Price.

I totally agree. Which is my point — there is such a thing as a “good liberal”. I’m not going to look at someone’s voter registration card (i.e. D-Connecticut) and say, Woah, looks like we got a “D” here, folks, he’s worthless. It would appear that 7% thinks otherwise, which I feel is close-minded.
This also brings us back to alphie. He’s not a troll because he a liberal. He’s a troll and he’s liberal.

McCain – Palin need a winning slogan/plan for the next few weeks.
To counter the Democratic “McCain will outlaw all abortions!” (and God knows what Sarah Palin will force women to do!) tactic… which will swing a dangerously iffy amount of votes.
Their trump card to all D attacks is that the Dems are the anti-energy gang. And the Democratic majority who have run Washington since 2006 are obstructionists and elitists and have caused this crisis by keeping us from using domestic resources.
They must be painted, day and night, endlessly and mockingly, as:
DEMOCRATS- THE NO ENERGY PARTY.
This keeps energy costs absurdly high, endangers the economy, reduces America’s security, and blocks a great natural jobs program in the new building, exploration and recovery.
Beat these slugs with the stick:
DEMOCRATS- the NO ENERGY Party!
until it drowns out their b.s. and makes them howl!

good point, advocate Country First beyond the election with Bolton on the international front. Best defense is a good offense.

I consider y’all big government liberals, LastRick.
And trolls, too.

All I remember is “wait until I introduce her to Washington”, but that’s enough for me.
DEMOCRATS- the NO ENERGY Party!

OK this is the best news yet. Historically Republicans and Independents leaning Republican under poll over the weekend. The main polling on the tracking will be what the Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday polls say. The fact that we are down by less then three on the weekend is very, very good for us.

Because Obama never says anything. He spouts a bunch of words and tries to make it sound lofty, but when you really look at it, really try to apply some elementary logic, it turns out that it’s mostly nonsense: platitudes and slogans linked by non-sequiturs.
mr.blacksheep on September 6, 2008 at 7:32 PM
alphie is not a troll – (s)he is a former Reagan conservative, or a Paul-nut, who hates everything not Obama.
p.s. there’s also a chance that (s)he is out of a job and gets paid by the HA advertisers.
Entelechy on September 6, 2008 at 7:32 PM
I dont think alphie’s a liberal. He seems to be a anarcho-capitalist or something. Who rails against rich people. It’s very confusing.

Gas is back under $4.00 a gallon, profitsbeard.
The oil companies and their pet Republican Congressmen failed to get their hands on our children’s oil reserves once again.
Continue the search for a reason to vote for another Republican like McCAin.

I am waiting to see the Ohio polling. Ohio is apparently now leaning Republican. In a few days, we’ll see if that leaning is not a full step. Kerry got a larger post-convention “bump” than Obama in Ohio, and lost the election, and he was running against Bush-Cheney. Obama is running against Palin. The local GOP county organization ran out of McCain signs, again.
