Media descends on Wasilla in hot pursuit of latest nutroots smear

A follow-up to Ed’s post last night about the Enquirer’s allegation of an affair, which metastasized via our privacy-defendin’ progressive superiors into the charge that the smoking gun lay buried in the divorce papers of Todd Palin’s former business partner, Scott Richter. Why else, after all, would Richter seek an emergency order to seal those records?
Answer: Because he’s tired of him and his kid being harassed by press vultures and nutroots cranks.
The liberal blogosphere was abuzz Friday with news that a friend of Sarah and Todd Palin had tried to seal his divorce records…
[A] stream of journalists and couriers from NBC, the Los Angeles Times, Court TV and other outlets (including this reporter, presently serving as Politico’s Alaska bureau) [made] their way to the Palmer courthouse to photocopy, at 25 cents a page, the 75 or so pages in the Richters’ marriage dissolution file.
Hence, Scott Richter’s motion this week to seal the file, in which he wrote, “I am friends an [sic] landowners in a remote cabin property with [the Palins] and as her campaign moves forward, my phone #’s and addresses are being used thru this file to obtain unwanted contact daily. My cabin life and private life is extremely important to me and my young son, who find ourselves and our lives disrupted by such contact.”…
Those who couldn’t make it to the Palmer courthouse in person were out of luck for much of Friday, since the court’s website crashed from all the traffic directed to it by a link on Andrew Sullivan’s blog.
I mentioned this on Tuesday but it’s worth repeating: As much as we’d all like to believe it’s dKos holding the hoops through which these morons jump, I’m convinced it’s Sullivan whom they’re taking their cues from. Yes, most of the media is liberal, and yes, many of them read Kos and don’t read right-wing blogs where they’d have access to debunkery; Ace has been writing about that all week and it’s true as far as it goes. But I don’t buy that they’re so cocooned that they’re unaware Kos has a credibility problem. It’s Sullivan, with his TNR pedigree and his reputation — to this day — for being “right-leaning” and therefore, ahem, impartial who lends credibility to the rumors by stamping them with the Atlantic’s imprimatur. Surely a serious pundit wouldn’t post smears about Trig Palin being Bristol Palin’s child. There simply must be something to it.
Meanwhile, per the Politico piece, the Anchorage Daily News is getting calls from the media about whether Palin cheated her way to victory in the 1984 Miss Wasilla Pageant. Yes, really.
Update: If the Enquirer story is true, the one virtue of it will be watching people on both sides reverse themselves instantaneously on the relevance of adultery to political credibility.

In their desperation to find some Palin dirt, how come no one in the media is bothering to report on Biden’s adult daughter having been arrested in 2004?

While the Liberal Elite Media is busy trying to dig up something on Sarah, the ticking bombshell story awaits, ans will be broke by the new media rather than by the dinosaur media… From the one and only (a member of the new media) Hugh Hewitt…
Through the work of Stanley Kurtz, whom Obama’s Chicago gang has unsuccessfully tried to intimidate, we already know that Obama and Ayers served not just on the Woods Foundation together but in a close partnership on the controversial Annenberg Challenge. Kurtz is continuing his researches, but MSM –so quick to invent stories about Sarah Palin such as the New York Times’ fiction on the vetting process which launched a thousand smears– doesn’t have to wait for Kurtz’s to wrap up his researches to ask obvious questions and press for detailed answers on how closely and how often Obama worked with Ayers on Woods and Annenberg and whether or not Obama ever represented Ayers or any of Ayers’ projects as a lawyer.
When Obama yesterday in effect asserted that the charge of his association with radicals was as false as the charge that he was a Muslim, he was renewing his attempt to lay a defense he must realize he will soon need. We know this a dodge, an attempt to categorize the Ayers connection as as far-fetched as the misinformation about Obama’s faith. We know after last week that MSM is in the tank for Obama, but are there any MSMers left with any standards who will ask the obvious questions: How often did Obama meet with Ayers? Why did Ayers recruit Obama to the Annenberg Foundation? Has Obama or his firm ever represented Ayers? If so, on what matters? Was Obama unaware of Ayers’ current political views which are indeed radical? Did they never talk politics or theory?
The voters would like to know, even if the MSM arm of the Obama campaign doesn’t.

Why is the Atlantic tolerating Sullivan’s nonsense?
Blake on September 6, 2008 at 3:12 PM
Andrew Sullivan supports Obama. Fair enough. I disagree but many of my friends do. They have the right to support the candidate that they like the best. I also have no problem with the media checking out Governor Palin’s history.
But Sullivan has engaged lately in dirty tricks and lies that I did not think he was capable of. Flat out lies, intentionally made. I was a big fan of Andrew Sullivan, reading him since 9/11. I often disagree but I thought him honorable (if misguided) on some issues. Not any more. Sullivan has morphed into the thing he used to protest. Sullivan should consider Nietzsche’s warning:
“Be careful when you fight the monsters, lest you become one.”

It reminds me of the time after W finally was declared the winner in 2000 where dozens of media, CNN, NBC and others went to Florida to pay to recount the ballots in hopes of finding Algore the actual winner. They never published the results because they came out for W time and time again.
If I were the keeper of the public records in Alaska, I would make sure that none of the websites worked, I would instruct no information be given out over the phone. I would make these media morons spend lots of money in my state trying to chase this down. They lost huge sums of money on their version of investigating Florida, and I would make sure they did the same in this case. Plus it would help the local Alaska economy. It is my bet, they won’t find squat.
Oh yeah, she wanted her brother in law fired. OK, imagine that if a New York City police officer tasered his step son and threatened his wife and extended family with violence? Or better yet, what if the police offer were white and his step son a minority? The locals would want to hang the officer, not just fire him. Geeezzzzzz

Since the same media gave Obama a 100% pass on everything, ironically nothing will stick to the new girl, true or not, and she only has two months to dissolve some of the varnish. This is the sweetest of molasses, and of media transparency and ineffectiveness.

I just followed a link from Michelle Malkin’s site to a story claiming that Gov. Palin said “Sambo beat the bitch.” to a table full of people. This was faithfully reported by a “waitress named Lucille”. And apparently, this is how Alaskans talk. This has always been my fear with the rise of the netroots and bloggers in general. The left has been far more effective organizing and using the internet than the right which is more splintered and inchoate .
With that advantage – and the natural ideological affinity of the press towards the left – they’re better able to stovepipe their smears and allegations upward to the (largely uncritical) mainstream press.
We now see this in action.
SteveMG on September 6, 2008 at 3:26 PM
If Sarah can come out of all these smears, proven to be un-true, and keep sane, if she were ever to become POTUS she would kick the snot out of any person on this earth who would do harm to our country. Stay calm and firm Sarah. I am a Sarah sister.

Just happened…

I believe that the Knight Ridder syndicate, the Miami Herald and USA Today did get access to every ballot and machine in FLA under the Freedom of Information Act. Their final tally was Bush by about 1500 votes. (That’s why Gore cherry-picked Dem-heavy counties. He knew there might be more Bush votes in the Panhandle, and that’s the lack of equal protection that screwed up Gore’s appeal.) Of course, it got very little press.

It’s times like these when you really want to get down on their level (the Drive-bys and the girly-men like Sullivan) and play their game. By that, I mean, go out and dig up the dirt, find and release their Social Security numbers, addresses and private phone numbers, just to let them know how it feels.
But then I remember – character and class prevents me from doing something so vile and despicable.
Sporty1946 on September 6, 2008 at 3:36 PM
No. My God, what is really incredibly fantastic is that these people really believe, really, truly believe that Sarah Palin, Gov. of Alaska no less, was never vetted, never had to pass a media stink test to get elected governor, has never had a political enemy that would have gladly previously outed her in those elections and was literally born out of John “Zeus” McCain’s head.
That is why they are running around searching for any story. That and they have had to cover so much bull sh*t for Obama and Hillary, they simply cannot believe that this woman is really that good. That and they know that, unless they can dig up something about Palin drinking a bottle of mad dog 20/20 every night, sleeping with her husband’s entire oil crew and beating her children with the chain of a snowmobile’s drive train every night, she has an incredible chance of becoming elected.
And, like the victory in Iraq that anyone watching since 2006 knew was coming, they will be caught with their mouths hanging open and their pants down. The media who has some over all psychological hang ups about being misled since Nixon and Viet Nam, are killing themselves and they don’t even know it.
It’s like watching a hung man kicking and gurggling on the gallows. Too disgusting to watch, but you just can’t turn away.

The major issue for most people on the Right was more the way the media treated the story, not the affair itself. Almost every discussion of it revolved around that aspect of the story.

Obama’s whining about “smears” on his background. I think he hears the footsteps approaching from sources he can’t control, despite all the scrubbing efforts, and the major media that’s been carrying his water these many long months won’t know what hit it.

Here, in SW Ohio, the Ohio Democratic Party seems to be carpetbombing women voters with 8 1/2 x 11 color postcards alerting them to McCain’s position on abortion. Nothing looks inaccurate, but the theme: “John McCain–Out of Touch with Women’s Lives.”
On another note, today, a nice working-class woman in her 50s told me she liked my “McCain-Palin” T-shirt.

I resent the notion that “everybody does it (adultery)”. No. Everyone does not do it. I also resent the notion that I’ll change my standards because of political affiliations.
It bothers me that McCain cheated on his first wife, although I’ve cut him a bit of slack for two reasons: 1)It seems the marriage was on the outs at that point, and 2)He has openly admitted his failing in this regard and seems ashamed of his past actions. After all, I can only forgive someone when they want to repent.
