[...] It’s a perfect fit, that is, so long as she doesn’t actually have to step in for McCain. The left will seize on this and the detail about her “fearless sense of righteousness” to compare her to Bush, but read it yourself and see if it doesn’t call to mind a different “lightweight” Republican president. If she wins — and no matter what Gallup says, given the electoral vote projections, that’s still a mighty shaky if — then Palinmania could be a huge asset in galvanizing popular support for McCain’s energy policy. Maverick’s mama didn’t raise no dummy. [...]

It's clear now that her remark in the Kudlow interview wasn't just a Jedi Mind Trick aimed at McCain. They're going to give her plenty to do as VP, because she's proven herself as Governor.

What a way to launch her into 2012 as well: Being out front on a huge issue.

Bolton could never get confirmed by the Senate for any cabinet-level position. Much as I'd like to see it, State is out. National security adviser might be a possibility. I haven't been following closely enough to know what McCain thinks of him.

Lieberman at State would be good enough, certainly better than what we've got now. Personally I'd like to see a ruthless housecleaner in that job like Giuliani, but I'm fairly confident that there's a gentlemen's agreement in place on that office.

"Why not make her Secretary of Energy rather than VP?"

Well, for one, the Secretary of Energy doesn't make policy or have the Prez's ear the way a VP would. Second, a VP in charge of energy policy doesn't need to report to Congress or sit at committee hearings and listen to Dem idiots pontificate and verbally abuse. She can just go on TV and talk to Americans or traipse around the country selling administration policy.

Rudi - AG

Entelechy on September 6, 2008 at 3:14 PM
Okay, I'm getting a little tired of the naivete of people calling for Rudy as AG. The AG is in charge of the BATFE, which prosecutes thousands of unconstitutional and corrupt gun laws. Rudy's been shown to be a gun grabber. This would be a disastrous choice for the 2nd Amendment. What we need for AG is somebody like, oh, Aaron Zelman.

United States Code, title 18, section 599:
Whoever, being a candidate, directly or indirectly promises or pledges the appointment, or the use of his influence or support for the appointment of any person to any public or private position or employment, for the purpose of procuring support in his candidacy shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both; and if the violation was willful, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.

Ok, I'm not one of the legal eagles, but I did pass for a laywer when I was young and it impressed girls in bars. :)

Anyway.. the way I'm reading that is basically "If you support me, I'll promise you a post as x or y".

If anything, Obama's announcement of Caroline Kennedy (one of his staff) as a future ambassador certainly is more incriminating than saying "If I'm elected, here's my team"

Really? Care to cite what law exist that states you cannot say who would be in your cabinet if elected?

BryanS on September 6, 2008 at 5:02 PM

I'm not a lawyer, but I have seen this (below) cited as the basis for candidates not announcing whom their appointees will be.

United States Code, title 18, section 599:
Whoever, being a candidate, directly or indirectly promises or pledges the appointment, or the use of his influence or support for the appointment of any person to any public or private position or employment, for the purpose of procuring support in his candidacy shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both; and if the violation was willful, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.
http://www.oscn.net/applications/oscn/DeliverDocument.asp?CiteID=198941

Can any of our legal eagles comment/clarify?

I was a bit confused a couple of weeks ago when I heard that Obama's camp announced that Caroline Kennedy would be his ambassador (to England, I believe).

It is, however, illegal for the candidate to name cabinet officials ahead of time.
