And about the Palin bubble …

posted at 12:30 pm on September 6, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Yesterday, I wrote about the strange meme that Sarah Palin would exist in a hermetically sealed mayonnaise jar on Funk & Wagnall’s doorstep until the election, and the media would not be allowed to question her.  Team McCain issued a reply that amounted to a Bronx cheer later in the morning, but somehow this attack persisted.  Last night, though, I received today’s schedule for John McCain and Sarah Palin, which more than hints that the myth of Palin as the Girl in the Plastic Bubble was just that — a myth:

Saturday, September 6, 2008
Colorado and New Mexico

10:00am Media Interview
10:30am Satellite into AARP Convention
11:30am Media Interview
12:30pm MT “The Road to Victory Rally”
Colorado Springs, CO
1:45pm MT Depart Colorado
2:50pm MT Arrive NM
3:30pm MT Media Interviews
7:00pm MT “The Road to Victory Rally”
Albuquerque Convention Center

That looks like three set-asides for media in one day, comprising at least three hours of face time for McCain and Palin.  I’m fairly certain that the media will be more interested in Palin than McCain in these blocs of time, and I’m also quite certain that national media will ensure that they get their fair share of attention.  That doesn’t look like a media bubble to me.

ManlyRash on September 6, 2008 at 12:35 PM

I think the media needs to do some Reverend Wright interviews. Why has he been in a bubble? When does he do Meet the Press? He has a book coming out right? And maybe William Ayers should sit down with Chris Wallace. Obama finally did the Factor but he has not exactly been subjected to tough questioning. This is just silly.

wise_man on September 6, 2008 at 12:39 PM

Are McCain and Palin going to continue campaigning together? Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but at what point do they separate and send Sarah one way and McCain to another state? It makes sense to have a lot of pressers when John is there with her to back her up.

But at the point Sarah starts going it alone, I suspect, if the campaign has any sense, they will cut back on Sarah’s media interview schedule and maximize her exposure to key voter blocks. At least until they are more comfortable that she can handle getting blindsided and sandbagged by the liberal media that has put a target on her.

Obama who? The Obama bubble has burst; 18 months of overdone media coverage has the American people burned out on this fabrication of an empty suit. Sara Palin is now the rage, with only a few months left in this campaign.

Obama and his “I’m a citizen of the world “a messiah”, I will part the sea and bring every citizen of the world into my light” theme is now a dead myth creation by a man with an ego the size of this planet.

Message to Obama… You sir, have seen your time come and go. You sir, have been replaced by a commoner, a regular PTA type of human, a wife and a mother who doesn’t look down on the rest of us from a perch somewhere on top of a magical hill.

UMd: Obama yout rally fizzles;

Three top Maryland officials rallied for Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama at the Stamp Student Union yesterday, part of the Democratic Party’s ongoing effort to increase voter turnout of a demographic that could determine Obama’s fate – the youth.

Gov. Martin O’Malley (D), Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown (D) and newly inducted Congresswoman Donna Edwards (D-District 4) focused on mobilizing college-age students for the Nov. 4 election, and while the crowd did break into several passionate chants of “Yes we can,” the 140 students in attendance barely filled up three-quarters of the room

140/36014 = 0.4%

/fizzle!

Pianobuff on September 6, 2008 at 1:15 PM

Gallup is “paid for” by sicko leftist people far to often. Gallup will mislead the American people all the way up to about (1) week before the election, when they will suddenly come closer to the real numbers in order to gain some sort of recognition. This game is well documented.

USA Today/Gallup Poll
CBS/NYT/Gallup Poll
CNN/Gallup Poll

How many times do you see these head liners used? The companies listed prior to Gallup are the ones funding the polling company. Always, upon digging into the details of the numbers polled, we find Democrats were polled much more heavily than Republicans in order to produce the desired results as requested by those financing the report… As the old saying goes, follow the money.

Keemo on September 6, 2008 at 1:38 PM

It’s at this point in the campaign that I knew I was going to miss Tim Russert. Palin would have made her Sunday morning talk show debut there for certain. Tim would have asked her very tough but fair questions, to which I’m sure she would have responded with aplomb. Tim’s bona fides with he whack jobs in the MSM would have toned things down quite a bit I think. But Tim’s not here and there’s no one else that comes close to filling his shoes.

Hey, Sarah came out of nowhere, right? Perhaps there’s a media superstar that’s awaiting her chance at the big time.

Montana on September 6, 2008 at 1:47 PM

Making the Liberal Media as much an issue as all others, is a winner for McCain/Palin. The American people are sick and tired of the Liberal Elite Media trying it’s best to get us to tote their line by way of the bullshit brainwash. This was not the intent behind the creation of “the free press” and the privileges given to journalists. The Liberal Elite Media has been abusing these privileges for decades now, and it’s high time these people face their punishment.

Dan Rathers & all others involved in the scheme to alter a presidential election with biased and fabricated information, should be in prison for the crimes they were guilty of committing. The fact that I would be in prison if I had committed those (or similar) crimes, makes me just a bit resentful.

OldEnglish on September 6, 2008 at 10:42 PM

There is more than one kind of bubble, and bubbles always burst. Gov. Palin’s awesome and meteoric rise can all-too-easily nosedive. I really hope and pray not, but I worry that the hoopla will spend itself too soon before the election. It takes a lot of energy to maintain this level of enthusiasm over an extended period – I am hopeful that the McCain/Palin campaign knows the downside to ‘too much of a good thing’.

Meanwhile, it seems that the biggest whiners about Gov. Palin being kept from them are the folks at MSNBC. Being interviewed by MSNBC is the same as being interviewed by the Obama/Biden campaign staff. Perhaps we could propose a deal: Gov. Palin will agree to be interviewed on MSNBC when Sen. Obama agrees to be interviewed by Rush.

(I refuse to take bets on the outcome of that.)
