Video: Palin hammers Obama over the surge in Wisconsin

Six and a half minutes of her from today’s stop in Cedarburg, followed by Maverick asking around the seven-minute mark if she isn’t, er, “the most marvelous running mate in the history of this nation.” The shot at Obama comes up front, swinging at a softball tossed yesterday by The One when he stupidly insisted that nobody anticipated the success of the surge. Meanwhile, Gallup’s three-day tracking poll sees a three-point bump for Maverick — and only one of those three days came after Palin’s speech. How much has the CW shifted? Enough that the same two Politico reporters who accused him of being desperate for picking her this weekend are now analyzing how she’s changed the race. Note especially the section on how McCain’s been liberated; like I’ve been saying, Palin isn’t a ploy to the middle, she’s a ploy to anchor the base so that Maverick himself can go after the middle. Case in point.

So suddenly has the momentum shifted that TPM claims Team Barry’s toying with the idea of abandoning its “ignore Palin” strategy and going after McCain over the fact that … Palin’s more gosh-darned popular than he is. Mind you, they were pushing the Eagleton meme two days ago; now, post-speech, they’re ready to argue that the ticket should be flipped. I can’t remotely fathom why they’d want to boost Palin’s credibility by emphasizing the fact of her appeal, unless they’re going for some sort of half-assed “celebrity” meme of their own vis-a-vis McCain. The problem is, the celebrity thing only works against Obama because he’s inexperienced; it’s the fact that people are so excited about a lightweight, not the fact that people are excited at all, that makes him seem ridiculous in those spots. If the Dems try it to McCain, it’s going to come off either like they’re congratulating him for finding such a killer running mate or as a backfiring commentary on why politicians with thin records really don’t deserve such adulation. Cross those fingers.

Exit question: Does the left really want to put its chips on comparing Sarah Palin to Pontius Pilate?

I guess when you turn out to be profoundly wrong on a vital national security issue, maybe it’s comforting to pretend that everbody else was wrong, too

I’m crying, I’m laughing so hard! God, doncha love this woman?

rightwingprof on September 5, 2008 at 3:51 PM

How about John McCain brining Sarah Palin to the Senate as a “guest” while he introduces legislation to allow us to drill and harvest our own energy in a bold new step to become energy independent? Then force the Democrats to either vote for or against it in the light of day before the American people. Then use that to bash them over the head at every turn?

Seven Percent Solution on September 5, 2008 at 3:45 PM

+10 WOW! Now that’s an idea!

(I reposted this again because SPS’s idea shouldn’t be buried!)

dominigan on September 5, 2008 at 3:53 PM

Obama, how does it feel to be the moose?

Cicero43 on September 5, 2008 at 2:04 PM

This is insulting to the moose!! I love it.

SayWhat on September 5, 2008 at 3:54 PM

Let Sarah be Sarah.

(he said nicely)

Mr_Magoo on September 5, 2008 at 2:29 PM

I could not agree more!! Soon, I hope, they cut the tether and let this woman fly.
Are you guys listening…. Truly , UNLEASH her…

jerrytbg on September 5, 2008 at 3:58 PM

Dang! McCain looks so uncomfortable up there. He looks like he doesn’t know what to do with himself and all the Republican/conservative adulation and people cheering, “John McCain, John McCain…” Dude, with Sarah on board you just better get used to it real quick!

Sultry Beauty on September 5, 2008 at 4:09 PM

They need to coach John to stare out at the crowd as she is speaking. Twice now during her speeches he’s stared down towards the floor, but from the front it can be misconstrued.
You can be sure the Daily Show is going to put a Wile E. Coyote style dashed line straight to Mrs. Palin’s posterior. And he does look uncomfortable, I agree. Happy but uncomfortable.

Video: Palin hammers Obama over the surge in Wisconsin

I didn’t even know when invaded Wisconsin. ;)

Texas Rainmaker on September 5, 2008 at 4:51 PM

Did Mac have a couple of beers before the rally? I’ve never seen him that… animated.

It looked like the wind was blowing Sarah’s notes and she was fighting it a bit. Quick turnaround after St. Paul, too. I expect she’ll have a fresh stump speech when she goes out on her own.

Of course, if she just stood there and waved for 15-20 minutes the crowd would go wild.

Mr. Wednesday Night on September 5, 2008 at 5:01 PM

GO MAGGIE…er, SARAH!

What a brilliant choice. Look at those crowds–he has brought his campaign alive.

PattyJ on September 5, 2008 at 5:10 PM

Exit Answer: By all means please do compare Palin to Pontus. It will go over like the proverbial fart in church. And the Lib’s will continue pulling their hair out screaming in the mirror asking themselves “why aren’t our tactics working?”.

Yea Mac, nice pick.

Hog Wild on September 5, 2008 at 5:11 PM

The surge in Wisconsin?
Doggone, I didn’t even know we were at war in Wisconsin.

Ali-Bubba on September 5, 2008 at 2:04 PM

Obama: It’s clear that this administration has taken their eye off the ball… they are engaging in a surge strategy in Wisconsin, when it is clear that it is Chicago that is the real battleground.

VekTor on September 5, 2008 at 5:13 PM

She didn’t seem as comfortable in that video as she did on Wednesday night and I thought they lifted too many lines from her RNC speech. Hopefully she’ll be able to talk without papers soon and it will be more natural and effective. I did love that first zinger about pretending that everyone was wrong on the surge. If she’s the one coming up with material like that, it may be better to let her do these things w/o the notes. :-)

kgs_mvs on September 5, 2008 at 5:15 PM

My point exactly…thank you.

jerrytbg on September 5, 2008 at 5:26 PM

i expect that Sarah Palin will learn her stump speech better as time goes on and won’t be so dependent on her written text. right now she is by the principal candidate and is there to pick up pointers.

KentAllard on September 5, 2008 at 5:34 PM

OK… so the last issue is resolved? lol!
I’ll be back shortly… got a dinner date…really! lol!

jerrytbg on September 5, 2008 at 5:43 PM

I was at the rally today. In response to some of the comments above, McCain didn’t seem uncomfortable at all from where I stood. On the contrary, he was strong, animated, exciting — a real pro. He spoke without any notes: very natural, very strong. Palin wasn’t as smooth as she was the other night — she was reading from notes, and yes, most of her lines were repeats of her convention speech — but she was fantastic, nonetheless. Hey, she hasn’t had a lot of time to work up a repetoire. The crowd was thoroughly ready to love her! They shook many hands afterwards, and then had ice cream in the shop behind them. Sarah selected “Moose Tracks” flavor.

CrusaderMom on September 5, 2008 at 6:13 PM

Poor Barry. Maybe he can set up a meeting with Oprah and they can cry their eyelahes out together.

I love the “Read My Lipstick” sign!

SouthernGent on September 5, 2008 at 6:23 PM

Hey, she hasn’t had a lot of time to work up a repetoire.

She’ll get in the swing! I was planning on voting for McCain anyway once the dust had settled and it became clear he would be the nominee because the alternative was just so much worse, but now, with Palin on the ticket and with the last few minutes of his speech last night, I can honestly say that I am enthused about his candidacy.

Now we have to help them win.

Matt Helm on September 5, 2008 at 6:32 PM

2000 miles on a snowmobile is pretty amazing, but to actually win the race 4 times? JUST D@MN!

ESPN should be wanting to interview him..

Chakra Hammer on September 5, 2008 at 6:37 PM

Okay, now that I’ve actually watched the video. Yeah, McCain sure does look uncomfortable while Sarah was speaking, although he was rock-solid when it was his turn. I guess I was only able to watch one person at a time this morning between the two tall people in front of me. He really looks like he’s in pain during her speech. I hope he can work on that — it makes him look feeble. It sure is the opposite of what he projected during his speech. We were thoroughly pumped by both the speeches. How cool that they came to Cedarburg right out of the convention! The surge in Wisconsin was a big success!

And yeah, the “Read My Lipstick” sign was genius! She definitely needs to use that.

CrusaderMom on September 5, 2008 at 6:45 PM

Not nervous, just in a different situation than normal. To stand by and be praised like that. I see what you’re talking about, but he naturally has that stiff stance (remember his arms).

Tommygun on September 5, 2008 at 7:24 PM

They should cut out some of that biography crap they are making her read. Not books. Bullet points.

and let Sarah do what she does best. they are stilting her.

I’m worried about McCain’s “i will make them famous” by vetoing the earmarked up bills. I hope that doesn’t turn into “read by lips, no new taxes” moment.

He did deliver that so much better than Thursday.

Kat_Mo on September 5, 2008 at 7:31 PM

This is what is known as In Touch.

- The Cat

P.S. Obama doesn’t understand the tide thing McCain keeps talking about.

MirCat on September 5, 2008 at 8:43 PM

P.P.S.

So Obama, are you saying Bush was smarter than you?

MirCat on September 5, 2008 at 8:47 PM

Why only the first bill with earmarks John? I have said for awhile now I would happily vote for anyone that would veto EVERY bill with earmarks. It’s a start at least, and one more than Obama would veto for that reason.

Buford on September 5, 2008 at 9:00 PM

She needs to start memorizing her speeches. Compress them to bullet-point recitations of pre-arranged script. Definitely get off the paper, and quick.

spmat on September 5, 2008 at 11:37 PM

spmat on September 5, 2008 at 11:37 PM

Agreed…and let her have more say in the content…
She didn’t get to be Gov. with highpowered speech writers.
If she did have one…put him on the staff.
that’s a no brainer.

jerrytbg on September 5, 2008 at 11:42 PM

Honestly, I think she’ll do way more good for McCain campaigning on her own, on her own terms, instead of this stand by your man stuff. I know it’s necessary right now for a few more days, but seriously, if he can’t take care of himself, we need to play some musical nominations.

spmat on September 5, 2008 at 11:45 PM

Couldn’t agreed more on your first point…
Explain the second more…

jerrytbg on September 5, 2008 at 11:47 PM

She’s here to get the base involved. The base’s interests are pretty much orthogonal to McCain’s interests except for one area, foreign policy. Bring the two together on foreign policy speeches, maybe energy (as long as he doesn’t bring up his poisonous cap and trade BS), let her on her own for everything else.

spmat on September 5, 2008 at 11:48 PM

oh wait… you mean make her the top of the ticket…
wait till 2012!

jerrytbg on September 5, 2008 at 11:50 PM

sorry.. misunderstood… separation is good…

jerrytbg on September 5, 2008 at 11:52 PM

The last thing she needs to do is become McCain’s policy mouthpiece. If she doesn’t keep her hands clean of his crappy ideas on immigration, global warming and free speech, she’ll lose the core of her appeal, which will basically remove the teflon with which she’s currently coated.

spmat on September 5, 2008 at 11:52 PM

same page

jerrytbg on September 5, 2008 at 11:53 PM

spmat on September 5, 2008 at 11:52 PM

Which brings us back to the reason her chose her…was it for energy?…I can’t see her going for cap and trade… immigration…. For me that’s the wild card…what have you heard?

jerrytbg on September 5, 2008 at 11:58 PM

I say no c&t because she did express the belief that GW is not anthropogenic.

jerrytbg on September 6, 2008 at 12:05 AM

She gave almost the same speech at Michigan and she did it much better.

Does Sarah have problems with open air audiences?

I just love the shirt. Just love it.

promachus on September 6, 2008 at 12:10 AM

He chose her for the same reason fighter pilots engage on sight. You want your opponent to have to react; you don’t want to be reacting to your opponent. He’s still a hot-shot. She was an a shake-up, a gamble at least partially calculated to confuse the field enough to put the campaign in a better firing position. It’s paying off pretty well, I’d say.

I only hope she’s able to play the Jefferson to McCain’s Adams and not lose her core principles in the process of supporting her running-mate.

promachus on September 6, 2008 at 12:10 AM

Gut reaction: 1) The video in AP’s post was the first public read-through of the speech in inclement conditions (windy), possibly with little-to-no prep time, while the one you linked was after she’d gotten a chance to internalize it, or 2) her speech writer doesn’t have her voice yet. I’m leaning to a combination of the two. The second video makes it obvious that she can internalize a speech just fine, though, so my worries are unfounded. Even a sub-par speech, which this one is. It’s pretty much a cut-n-paste of portions of his acceptance speech and hers, without much connective tissue.

spmat on September 6, 2008 at 12:27 AM

amen…but I do want to know her stance on borders… good night…

jerrytbg on September 6, 2008 at 12:31 AM

Beautiful. While Sarah’s there, can they help her pick out a comfortable chair? Might as well get cracking on her future job now! ;)

jaleach on September 6, 2008 at 12:38 AM

I just can’t wait to see her show up on Leno or Letterman. She’s gonna kick boo-tay.

Mojave Mark on September 6, 2008 at 1:31 AM

I suspect that Sarah will be on script until she has the cadence of this campaign down - which won’t be long. I’m sure both she and McCain want no off the cuff missteps which will be jumped upon by a bruised and angry media.

But make the print bigger, so she doesn’t have to bend over to see it, for Pete’s sake!

skeeter on September 6, 2008 at 3:12 AM

Yeah, I can’t say that I am too thrilled that they re-used so much of their convention speeches. I realize that they are effective speeches and that not everyone watched the convention, but people that navigate crowds to do so may end up disappointed. I am also aware that Obama gives the same speech over and over again. I’m just saying that they need to, at the very least, re-order the speech so it isn’t so freaking familiar. And for God’s sake, let them have her memorize her speech. I mean, if they think that her spending much of the speech looking at a sheet of paper just to re-read a speech almost the same as the one given at the convention is going to somehow fend-off critics and encourage people about her experience, they are sorely mistaken. I want this ticket to succeed, but they are going to need to improve this format. I would love to “give her time” to blossom, but we need to defeat these misogynistic, elitist radicals and do so quickly.

NO BLOOD FOR CHEESE! NO BLOOD FOR CHEEEEEESE!

Mr. Wednesday Night on September 6, 2008 at 4:18 AM

I HEART Sarah…BIG TIME!

sabbott on September 6, 2008 at 5:09 AM

The surge in Wisconsin requires more analysis of the culture of the region.

For example, somewhere south of Milwaukee is the “Cheese Curtain”, and anywhere north of the Cheese Curtain it is very risky to be a fan of any team but the Green Bay Packers. Bears fans detected in these areas risk verbal abuse or even wedgies (and not the cheese kind).

Lack of green and gold camoflage (the Packer’s colors) often exposes the unwary to abuse for offending the State Religion (Go Packers!)

During deer season, many businesses have to shut down due to lack of workers.

Sarah Palin is ideal for appealing to Wisconsin natives, outside of Milwaukee and Madison. Her voice sounds very similar to a Wisconsin accent, with Czech and Polish linguistic influences. Sarah has been referred to by environmentalist wackos as “The Killa from Wasilla” and is quoted as saying “Cut, kill dig and drill“.

Northern Wisconsin would be sympathetic to her husband’s brief interest in a secessionist party, though in the case of Northern Wisconsin in the 1970s, there was talk of Northern Wisconsin and UP Michigan separating from SE Wisconsin and the vile lower peninsula of Michigan to form a separate state more attuned to their views. This idea had trouble being taken seriously after the new state was referred to as “Wishigan”.

Right_of_Attila on September 6, 2008 at 9:12 AM

Hm, factcheck.org is going to have a field day. The jet did not sell on E-Bay. It was eventually by a broker for about a 25% loss over its original cost.

Even that is a good thing. It’s fuel cost to the state would be more than the money lost selling it at the loss.

You go Girl!
{^_^}

herself on September 6, 2008 at 12:24 PM

Personally, I’d like to see Eagleton meme out there since it seems to apply more to Biden anyway. Maybe that’s why they dropped it?

fretless on September 7, 2008 at 11:43 AM

Oh…

And count me in with the people who seriously considered not voting for McCain. His choice of Palin was a master stroke, and that’s why the libs are so angry. They’re genuinely scared.
