Top Obama supporter to Ingraham: Shouldn’t Palin be home taking care of her kids? Update: Media annoyed at GOP criticism

posted at 4:24 pm on September 5, 2008 by Allahpundit

Fair to call him a “top” supporter? Given the fact that he’s a member of The One’s national finance committee and advertises that fact in his HuffPo bio, I’m going with “yes.” His M.O. reminds me of Greenwald trying to rewrite the definition of “chickenhawk” so that it applies to the right but not the left: Start with the smear you want to use, then refine the parameters just enough to protect your own side from the tu quoque. In this case it means replacing the argument that mom should be home with the family with the more highly nuanced argument that any politician of either sex should be home when their family’s in crisis. Bristol’s pregnant and baby Trig has Down’s syndrome and, gosh, don’t you think a responsible mother gender-neutral parent would consider that before doing something as rash as running for high office? To which I reply: Am I hallucinating or isn’t there a guy on the other ticket who had a much worse family crisis than this, who in fact has been praised to the heavens for not quitting his job and instead making a heroic effort to manage both kids and career through hard times? Did I dream that? I could have sworn I heard something about it recently.

All part of the effort to freak-ify her, of course. She’s a bad mom with a chillbilly family better suited to Springer than to network election coverage. That’s why the AP’s including cute little details about school mascots in their stories of how many colleges she attended. And why “respectable” journals of left-wing thought are soliciting pieces from advice columnists. Exit question: Does the left really want to play a game of “children ruined by absentee political parents”? Because I know just the place to start.

Update: Don’t you mind what those conservatives are saying about the press, now. The coverage is fair because, well, we say it is:

After several primetime speakers at this week’s Republican National Convention unleashed a barrage of attacks on the news media for their coverage of vice-presidential nominee Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, network news executives defended their coverage and dismissed the charges as a stale political strategy meant to distract viewers from legitimate election issues.

“It’s a time-honored marketing ploy and, every time they bash the media, it means they’re not talking about a vision or a plan,” CNN president Jon Klein said. “But the best antidote to cynical marketing is solid reporting.”…

“America has been presented with a total unknown who might be a heartbeat away from the presidency,” Klein said of Palin, “and Americans have every right to expect as much information as possible about this person so that they can make an informed choice. Certainly our critics are in favor of Americans making an informed choice, aren’t they?”

What Klein means by “informed choice,” of course, is having his reporters recycle Daily Kos rumors about whether Trig is really Palin’s child and wonder aloud whether the mother of a Down’s baby should really be doing something as selfish as running for vice president.

These morons understand that the public agrees with McCain’s campaign about this, yes?

Ah, let it go. I lost my cool too. He is just some loser trying to drive traffic to his pathetic blog (I fell for it).

You are falling for the sophistry that all conservatives hold the same view on all topics. Just as there are some democrats who remain silent while holding a dissenting view, but remain loyal to the democrat party.

So you’re saying that some conservatives believe that, aside from the plumbing, women and men are interchangeable? Yeah okay. And if my grandma had wheels she’d be a wagon. /Scotty

In my case I marvel at my ability to hold two different conflicting views at the same time with this debate being a classic case.

Regarding comments about McCain bringing up his experience as a POW, I don’t think the man is bringing it up every time he speaks some place. (Unlike Rudy who does tend to play the “9-11 card” every time he opens his mouth). But when you’re running a video at the RNC that supposed to tell his life story , how do you omit that part of his life? I mean, it is a pretty unique life-shaping experience that most of us will (thankfully) never have to go through. My opinion is that he’s not bringing it up so much as “look at what a hero I am” but more as a “here’s an experience that had a profound effect on my view of the world”

I disagree that she’s a freak… but at the same time I don’t know any family with a 17 year old parent. Growing up on the Indiana-Kentucky border, I come from a very conservative part of the country where teenage parents were looked down upon. It’s simply hard for me to relate to her family’s situation. On the other hand, I have incredible respect and sympathy for parents who raise a child with Down’s syndrome. It certainly speaks to her character.

As for the Jerry Springer appearance, that’s actually a very interesting idea. Who would she brawl with, Hillary?

Bang on. Obama says that McCain is focusing on his bio too much. But poeple get it that McCain is relating these stories because he wants them to understand how they will result in the kind of President John McCain will be.

Obama and his camp may be the only ones who dont get it. Even the MSM wont touch this arguement with a 10 foot pole.

I have three kids, all adults. All through their teens I was up front about what my dream come true scenario for their lives would be but made sure they could come to me in all situations. Including all forms of birth control/v.d. prevention I am sure I scared them to death with all my dire warnings of what could happen to them. Now my dream come true scenario didn’t work out but everyone is fine. As a matter of fact I’m thinking of paying big to the first one to get married and make me a grandmom. I guess what I am saying you don’t have to be PRO birth control to make sure your kids know but stuff happens.

My bet is on Palin being the strongest VP ever. McCain is man enough and if he wins, he will owe her bigtime. Plus he wants her to succeed magnificently if he were to keel over. She could make Al Gore look like the Clinton’s butler after a few years.

Regarding the cold and ruthless Sarah Palin, as a right-leaning independent, it is so nice to see that there are some Republicans who care about animals. Most Repubs are fond of calling animal-welfare types loonies. One awesome Republican animal advocate just happens to be Matt Scully, the guy who wrote the knock-out speech for Palin’s big debut.

I wonder if it felt strange at all to Palin, a hunter, having an animal-welfare-ANTI-hunting advocate writing her BIG debut speech?

Women – men interchangeable?

Name me one man who has given birth to one human baby. Is that the plumbing you are talking about?

Am I saying that ’some’ conservatives believe ……..

don’t know, there are a lot of conservative who believe a lot of different things. I don’t speak for all conservatives, I speak only for myself.

I might presume that ‘most’ conservatives believe something because it appears to be that way from the interaction I have with ‘many’ people.

Yes, I am conservative, and I do accept the idea that in some circumstances gender has no impact on job/duties/preformance/results, and at the same time there are circumstances where gender does make a difference.

Why do you insist on making it a yes/no true/false choice point? It depends on circumstances, and individuals, and it changes as circumstances change.

Well unfortunately sometimes your beliefs and decisions are changed by other people, i.e. your own children. Once you have kids you find that things that you thought were just awful (unwed motherhood, gay, drug use) could happen to you and are you willing to be estranged from your child because you are staring that “awful” situation in the face? I was big on the use of guilt and scare tactics but I always knew that any of those things could happen.

Shelby on September 5, 2008 at 7:02 PM

Well that depends, I am all for animal welfare but I am not going to give animals human status. I have heard that the slow down in hunting is making the deer population in PA almost dangerous. But let’s not move the thread off the subject.

Cindy Munford on September 5, 2008 at 7:13 PM

If I were a herd animal, I would hope that Sarah Palin would show up before the wolves or mountain lion did.

NellE on September 5, 2008 at 7:14 PM

Let’s not go all PETA over Palin. She’s a hunter. One shot one kill. Eats the results, uses what can’t be eaten.

PETA won’t even own up to the animal processing facilities they have in the Carolinas where hundreds of animals went without proper feeding, water, and veterinary care for months at a time, or the animals raised in labs suddenly released into the wild where they are eaten alive, literally, but varmints.

Conservatives…we respect the environment, cull stocks that would spread disease and famine among herds, make sure we know how to aim and fire a weapon so the animal is dispatched instantly, and we eat what we harvest and use the rest.

Around here, it is the city folks who come around during deer season and end up bringing in bucks with multiple holes in them, a lot of belly shots, and obvious evidence of the animal struggling before a coup de grace could be accomplished.

No hunters are not bad. Amateur wannabe hunters are indeed very bad.

I don’t think Scully and Palin had any problem over that issue, none at all.

Just so we’re all on the same page here.

You don’t like or support vets that “milk” their war time service experiences for “personal gain” – - does running for public office constitute “personal gain”?

Your heroes are those that fought in WWII (but only the ones that won, and didn’t “milk” it) – - is telling your story to people that are considering voting for you milking it? Also, who are the WWII vets that didn’t win? And, does that mean that you don’t support or like vets from the other wars (WWI, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf War, Iraq, Afghanistan, Cold War, and other conflicts)?

You support the Dem party’s nominees for President (who touts his community organizing, “present” voting record, and campaigning experience) and VP (who constantly “exaggerates” when he gets excited and brags about his intelligence) – - is Obama milking his experiences for personal gain, or is he exempt from that because that only applies to people that served in the military? What about Biden?

You ever hear of mad cow disease? What do they do with the infected cows? They kill them so they don’t infect the whole herd.
Hunting is no different, the larger the herd the likelier the chance for disease. Your against hunting, so you’d rather they just die off all together. So for you to call us anti- animal is just stupid. And meat does taste really great.

And I do think that Dems went too far in saying that women were the same as men but like any idea the fanatics usually go off the deep end and speak in nothing but absolutes.

I work in development, and many projects that I am involved in in developing countries have a Gender component. The advisors that handle this are actual Gender Experts trained in bringing more women into decision making at all levels of government and through society as a whole. They would always say to me that the message is NOT that women are the SAME as men, but that they are EQUAL to men. They make a specific point everytime they engage the local male population at the village level that they are not saying women are the same, but rather should be treated as equals.

Seems a straightforward distinction, but as you pointed out, the idea that some women are pushing the ideal that there is no difference between women and men, their respective roles in society, etc., goes against what I have learned from these Gender Experts.

Waterboy on September 5, 2008 at 7:41 PM

My point is that there are things you think you believe until it slams you right in the face.

I don’t think that it’s hypocritical to believe that it’s better to have mom at home when her girls are growing up, but at the same time, yielding to reality.

What’s hypocritical: saying that it was wrong to have those beliefs in the first place–not because of new received information, but because of who is doing the criticizing.

Here’s a different, less incendiary example. Do I think it’s wrong to speed? Yes. Do I sometimes speed on the freeway because of how fast all other cars are going and I don’t want to die? Yes. Do I sometimes speed because I’m late for a very important date? Yes.

But that doesn’t mean that speeding is right.

What these PETA folks don’t seem to understand is that if animals had 1.) Better cognitive skills, 2.) an opposable thumb, and 3.) a shotgun, they’d be hunting our ass. I order all of them to a remedial viewing of “Planet of the Apes”.

Dagnar on September 5, 2008 at 7:43 PM

You know, I love the deer (a la bambi), and I could never, ever kill an animal. If I had to kill to eat I’d probably be a vegetarian.
However, I do not condemn people who hunt. They hunt and they live off of the meat. Good for them. Some people in my state would not be able to feed a family if they didn’t hunt. They do that and they stay off of welfare. In fact, that would be the thing they would never do and that is depend on someone else to take care of their family.
However, if I had young children and had no other way to feed them I guess I’d have to (at least have my husband do it.) I can’t even fish, but I like to eat fish.
I think God gave us these animals to use. I wish it was always done humanely, but these peta nuts are crazy. They would be happy if all the humans were shot and the animals ran the earth and ate each other.
alphie: nice of you to think of voting next time – I’m afraid there might not be a next time if obama get’s in. That’s how worried I am about this nut who is friends with the chicago machine and terrorists.
I know I’m off topic, sorry.

Waterboy on September 5, 2008 at 7:51 PM
He’s just trying to get his timing down to jump in front of your car next time. :)

Yeah, me to either.

I think most people are pretty good at minding their own business but I did get a tad miffed at Sally Quinn telling the world that Gov. Palin should stay home and I was equally annoyed with Debbie Schlussell (sorry if spelling is wrong), she has conservative credentials I believe.

I am pretty sure if we fell asleep around a hungry animal they would need none of those things. I’m sleeping in the car on camping trips.

Reagan in a dress baby!

truevine on September 5, 2008 at 7:56 PM

Geeez Louise…there’s an image I hope to never see. Giuliani was bad enough. :-)

But, ya got a good point there. That’s where Governor Palin will shine. Western Republicans…Goldwater, Reagan and Palin. That’s a group I can only wish I could be worthy to be a part of.

Waterboy on September 5, 2008 at 7:57 PM

Nah, probably just a liberal deer. He’ll jump in front of your car, get hit, and then sue your ass. Then he’ll try to collect workers comp because it happened at his job site.

Dagnar on September 5, 2008 at 8:02 PM

In this respect, Sarah Palin is just barely qualified for the Vice Presidency. Five children may be the most we can expect from ordinary married couples, but Palin and the other candidates should be held to a higher standard.

They’re operating from envy and not going to the trouble of trying to hide it.

We all have principles (well most of us). Because we’re human, we sometimes fail to live up to them or have to yield in the face of reality. That doesn’t mean that we should discard those principles or pretend as if they were wrong or that we never had them subsequent to when we fail/fall short.

And for the record judging from their admirable behavior in the face of choices made, the Palins, I think, recognize this. It’s many of their supporters (of which I am one) who don’t. And that’s who I’m talking to.

baldilocks on September 5, 2008 at 8:07 PM

If that’s the case, I may go and re-enlist for the ARNG and volunteer for riot control.

One could only hope that Alphie leads that riot.

Oh and Alphie:

Rick,

If you could provide an actual link to an Edwards-baby daddy thread where I commented…I’ll let you know.

alphie on September 5, 2008 at 7:36 PM

He already did. Don’t you remember what you put on your own blog that’s linked to your Hotair username on October 15th, 2007 at 1:06 PM titled: Another political candidate Catch-22″?

Are you now claiming not to have written this? Well here, in case you decide that you want to bury that blog, allow me to enlighten the hotair community:

Crappy news outlet publishes anonymous charge against a political candidate.

If the candidate ignores the charge, it means they’re “guilty,” and through repetition, the charge becomes “fact.”

If they do respond to the charge, then the big news outfits that wouldn’t print the original charge declare that the candidate’s response is news and spread the original charge much wider.

The “respectable” press become unpaid enforcement thugs for the screaming tabloid press.

So, being an elected governor with an 86% approval rate, defeating a major GOP player in the primary by a hefty margin, defeating a sitting Dem governor, having a known history of destroying the old boy network and nailing corruption and managing a $15 billion dollar budget…isn’t a qualification for VP?

The idea of a citizen civil servant harkens back to the Constitution and the Founding Fathers…private citizens serving their Nation. Professional politicians was NOT what the Founders had in mind. Not one bit.

That’s what makes this “Shouldn’t Palin be home taking care of her kids?” argument so obscene.

I think what’s even more obscene is how hypocritical the liberals are when it comes to assaulting families.

Holy Smokin Moses. The latest CNN story I just saw is how supposedly Palin did not sell her car on ebay! The breathlessly report that it had no buyers on eBay so a broker had to sell it. Hmmm…

Palin lied, people, uh, something.

Nice job CNN…thats some good reporting Lou.

I hope he doesn’t. Alphie is a degenerate coward milking off of the freedom that was bought for him by the blood of all men and women that fought in all American wars, not just those that his malfunctioning selective mind considers important.

Obama’s skin color is a natural advantage, and he can do what he wills with it. Much like a well-endowed woman can use her looks to her own advantage.

I guess all of the starlets with nose-jobs now have to sit down and shut up since they aren’t using their God given looks.

BacaDog on September 5, 2008 at 8:28 PM

When the Left gets into the finer points of semantics (how many angels can fit on the head of a pin) and loses sight of the overall picture…well, they’ve already lost. We just have to drive the bayonet in deeper, or let them fall more heavy on their swords.

Governor Palin offered the aircraft on Ebay. The final bid was not sufficient, perhaps did not meet the reserve. When selling high-ticket items the Ebay seller has the right to withdraw the item. The aircraft was sold. Considering the overhead/expense involved with maintinaing that aircraft, and depreciation (mentioned earlier) and age– aircraft have a huge depreciation compared to your average car — the net result was a win for the taxpayers of Alaska.

The idiots over at CNN and a few other outlets are still getting day-old talking points from Media Matters it seems.

What Klein means by “informed choice,” of course, is having his reporters recycle Daily Kos rumors about whether Trig is really Palin’s child and wonder aloud whether the mother of a Down’s baby should really be doing something as selfish as running for vice president.

Marketing? WTF do voters care about marketing? This nitwit is actively engaged in a battle against some demons that he thinks the RNC has invented, solid evidence that he carries an “us and them” position into his work, where CNN is the us and the GOP is the them.

Thanks Klein, for confirming what we all already know.

It’s a bunch of horse-crap. Some in the media are trying to get cute with this one….

She never said she sold the plane on EBay, she said she put it on EBay, and she did.

It never sold through Ebay though, and was later sold directly to a private buyer.

Morning in America is starting to look sweet.

I know! (Monica from Friends voice). I cannot believe I saw CNN do a 2-3 minute story on the McCain backdrop like it was anything at all. Did they talk about the Greek Columns that were talked about all over right-leaning blogs for days? Noooo (John Balushi voice).

Maybe that is the new MSM strategy to derail the increased momentum of the McCain ticket: death by a thousand meaningless cuts.

More too come I am afraid. Tomorrows edition: CNN reports that McCain erroneously refers to his captivity in NORTH Vietnam…a country that no longer exists.

Waterboy on September 5, 2008 at 8:37 PM

I went from , I am not voting for McCain, to holding my nose and voting for McCain, to STOKED about voting for McCain/Palin. Life is good.
