Top Obama supporter to Ingraham: Shouldn’t Palin be home taking care of her kids? Update: Media annoyed at GOP criticism

posted at 4:24 pm on September 5, 2008 by Allahpundit

Fair to call him a “top” supporter? Given the fact that he’s a member of The One’s national finance committee and advertises that fact in his HuffPo bio, I’m going with “yes.” His M.O. reminds me of Greenwald trying to rewrite the definition of “chickenhawk” so that it applies to the right but not the left: Start with the smear you want to use, then refine the parameters just enough to protect your own side from the tu quoque. In this case it means replacing the argument that mom should be home with the family with the more highly nuanced argument that any politician of either sex should be home when their family’s in crisis. Bristol’s pregnant and baby Trig has Down’s syndrome and, gosh, don’t you think a responsible mother gender-neutral parent would consider that before doing something as rash as running for high office? To which I reply: Am I hallucinating or isn’t there a guy on the other ticket who had a much worse family crisis than this, who in fact has been praised to the heavens for not quitting his job and instead making a heroic effort to manage both kids and career through hard times? Did I dream that? I could have sworn I heard something about it recently.

All part of the effort to freak-ify her, of course. She’s a bad mom with a chillbilly family better suited to Springer than to network election coverage. That’s why the AP’s including cute little details about school mascots in their stories of how many colleges she attended. And why “respectable” journals of left-wing thought are soliciting pieces from advice columnists. Exit question: Does the left really want to play a game of “children ruined by absentee political parents”? Because I know just the place to start.

Update: Don’t you mind what those conservatives are saying about the press, now. The coverage is fair because, well, we say it is:

After several primetime speakers at this week’s Republican National Convention unleashed a barrage of attacks on the news media for their coverage of vice-presidential nominee Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, network news executives defended their coverage and dismissed the charges as a stale political strategy meant to distract viewers from legitimate election issues.

“It’s a time-honored marketing ploy and, every time they bash the media, it means they’re not talking about a vision or a plan,” CNN president Jon Klein said. “But the best antidote to cynical marketing is solid reporting.”…

“America has been presented with a total unknown who might be a heartbeat away from the presidency,” Klein said of Palin, “and Americans have every right to expect as much information as possible about this person so that they can make an informed choice. Certainly our critics are in favor of Americans making an informed choice, aren’t they?”

What Klein means by “informed choice,” of course, is having his reporters recycle Daily Kos rumors about whether Trig is really Palin’s child and wonder aloud whether the mother of a Down’s baby should really be doing something as selfish as running for vice president.

These morons understand that the public agrees with McCain’s campaign about this, yes?

Shouldn’t Obambi be in Kenya to take care of his African grandma. Oh, just remember his grandma can’t vote so she’s ain’t helping Micheele and Barry’s kids. And neither can Barry’s half brother who’s living on a $1 per day budget.

If Palin were the only female in the race, from the left, it would be Nirvana, history-making, glass-shattering to where your ears would hurt from the noice factor…alas, she’s on the wrong side of history politics.

The picture is coming into focus now. The picture of all the pissed off Liberals, crying about how we won yet another election and how it was stolen. How it is all part of the vast right wing conspiracy. How there is no possible way that “The One” lost an election that seemed in the bag. I think they will resort to violence this time, but I am ready to rub it in without mercy. Laugh and laugh and laugh.

Yeah- working mom, stay-at-home dad, come from grassroots to the VP nomination while still raising a family and running the state of Alaska! This is the feminist’s idea of the perfect situation except for that little “R” thing behind Palin’s name. Probably doesn’t help that she shoots big game either.

Progressives are interesting. They go from 15 years ago saying the sex lives of politicians is none of the public’s business to the sexual lives of politician’s children are public fare. Then from saying women can have it all to women with children are better off staying in the home.

10 guess who said this:

“…and spent a lot of very valuable time with my family in the last couple of weeks and said I was going to go back to work. I believe that is what the American people want me to do and, based on my conversations with leaders around the world, I think that’s what they want me to do and that is what I intend to do…I’m going to do my best to continue to go through the personal process in an appropriate way but to do my job, to do the job that I was hired to do and I think that very much needs to be done right now.”

I find this jaw-droppingly unbelievable. This asshat wants us to believe that SP shouldn’t have accepted the VP tap because she should have known that the rabid left-wing media would drag her and her pregnant daughter thru the mud.

I haven’t heard the obvious solution yet: Todd won’t go out fishing anymore as the ’second husband’ and will become a Mr. Mom or GASP, they might have to hire a nanny. What in heaven’s name is wrong with any of that? If the left is so liberated and smart, why haven’t they figured out that there are actually TWO parents in this family?

Your anecdote should be embarrassing to teachers in more ways than one.

Your command of written English is suspect if not tragic. Your failed logic is also more befitting a student than a teacher.

You “suppose” their students hear the same in the classroom. What about yours? Do you teach your students how to win an argument by walking out of a room then coming back in to throw one last bomb?

Two of the teachers in this anecdote are liberal. Three of them are foolish.

When Bristol gets married, doesn’t that mean the Palins will only have one child at home during the day? Does the left really think being a stay -at- home mother for one baby is challenging and fulfilling enough for an intelligent, educated woman?

NellE on September 5, 2008 at 5:03 PM

I waited for Ingram to point out that the only reason McCain’s/Palin’s camp released that about the daughter was to get it out first because they KNEW the left would trash her ANYWAYS. The Rep camp has asked for privacy on the matter to which the left just keeps driving their points. Would have liked to have seen that called out any number of the times her guest brought up Palin shoving her daughter into the international scene. Good slammage otherwise though. This type of strategy will get sillier and worse and once again the Dem’s will have put up an unelectable candidate, only to blame that on everyone else after snatching defeat from the jaws of victory….

So all of us with special needs kids have families “in crisis” and should quit our jobs? Does this bastard even know what a crisis is? Or that some of us will tough out what we have to and sacrifice to make it work. He may call it a crisis, but for us it is the only life we know. It’s nornal!

Nosferightu on September 5, 2008 at 5:06 PM

Laura’s guest makes it sound like the Palin family set out to share their daughter’s pregnancy with the world and ignores the fact that it was the rumors pushed in left-leaning blogs and then picked up by the MSM about Trig that forced their hand or, at the very least, accelerated their schedule for announcing the pregnancy. Had they released medical documentation as A.Sullivan requested, many would have simply turned around and argued that the documents were fake. They probably understood this and rather than have folks digging up dirt about their daughter, decided that it would better in the long run for them to announce it. I’m willing to bet that the decision to announce was made after a family discussion, much like millions of other American families would have in such a situation.

While Senator McCain and Governor Palin make their scheduled campaign stops over the weekend, the Media at the behest of the Obama campaign shoots itself in the foot…feet?

And amid all of this, we, the people, see the MSM for what we have known them to be for so long but were scoffed at by this same media for being just a bunch of kick fly-over country rubes. But now, that elephant in the living room becomes so clear to just about everyone from the center and right…and the independents, God bless them.

The beauty of all of this is that the MSM is doing our work for us, and I actually believe, truly believe, the Media don’t get it, any of it. While they are attacking us, they are cleaving off segment after segment of the center of this country who are flocking over to the McCain camp, for no other reason than that are “mad as hell, and aren’t going to take it anymore.”

Meanwhile, John McCain and Sarah Palin continue their press the flesh personal campaign stops talking to Americans in growing numbers (40,000 in Wisconsin, imagine that) while the Media and the Obama camp self-destruct.

Yes, here’s the obligatory “Rove you magnificant bastard.”

And McCain and Palin offer a quiet “thank you” to Colonel John Boyd.

By this line of ill-logic, President Clinton should certainly have resigned immediately to care for his family in crisis – as Hillary and Chelsea went through a far more devastating public humiliation when all the dirt about Monica burst into the limelight. What a rotten parent Bill was. And what an equally rotten, ambition-driven parent Hillary was. Poor Chelsea, psychologically ruined forever.

What a bunch of hypocritical morons. Yes, I say, bring this on. A teenage pregnancy is small potatoes indeed compared to Monicagate.

Women and men are different, but she isn’t be challenged on any of those issues. She is being subjected to questions that no one of the other gender would have to face, and that’s wrong.

The main point of illustrating differences between men and women is to help marriages etc work. It’s silly, stupid, even for the media to claim the right to poke their life, which is by all outside evidence, very loving and successful.

But, to be on the safe side AP, start a rumor about Obama and see if CNN covers it as information for Americans seeking to make an informed choice. Something that could be plausible, but for which you have no basis. For instance, looking back at the Dem convention Day 1 photos of Obama’s daughters, there appeared to be a look of fear in their eyes when he came on the big screen to praise Michelle on her speech. A fear that is usually only seen in the eyes of children that are physically beaten by their parents. Could it be that Obama beats his kids severely?

And most of us (maybe all) on this blog work very hard for a living. Go back to your kos or the black liberation society and leave this to the intelligent people.

To all of you, I think it was obvious what I thought about what the teacher said that has little children at home, and how Sarah should be home. I was so appalled that they could really say that I was dumbfounded. I know they are thinking it, but to say it out loud. Good heavens!
And yes, the left is kind of represented by the classroom teachers like the msm are in the news etc. It is really a worry to me too.
We had a voucher vote in our state and the teachers and their families defeated it because they were so concerned about their jobs. Not the education of the children. Besides who will indoctrinate these little darlings. They couldn’t count on the parents to do it right.
We really need to know what is going on in the classroom, as parents, grandparents etc.
I heard a sub say to a classroom of hispanics and muslims that they should not have as many children as the ________ (I won’t fill in the blank [some of you will know] – but I nearly laughed my head off) – muslims with 4 wives and hispanics with uncounted children. Needless to say, we never had that sub again. (ps – I love big families, I’m not complaining.)
Sorry to go on so long, but we need to wake up.

Yes, we did. She’s been the subject of many posts here on HA and over at CQ, for over a year. As have a few of my favorite up and coming GOP candidates, like former Lt. Governor Steele. I had a few doubts about Palin. Thought she’d be better off taking care of business in Alaska first, establish real cred by destroying the status quo out there. Thought she’d get eaten alive by a hostile press. She changed my mind, in less than 24 hours, too. Real grit. True grit. I should have seen it sooner.

The major media is so far behind the power curve, especially with the 24-hour news cycle, they stumble all over themselves trying to play catch-up. The new media has arrived and Election 2008 has established that for certain. We were born from the Bush-Kerry campaign. We are here to stay.

We should draw comfort from that.

What you are advocating is that we be judgmental of other families lives. Which is what many conservatives reject.

Conservatives, by and large, believe in strong families. If for most people that dynamic means dad works, mom @ home, then great. If that is reversed, then great. What we have here is the liberals assuming a stereotype (false one) about conservatives. Conservatives say, well here is a pattern of families that have been successful, so many conservative-minded counselors say if you are having trouble try this.

That’s not hypocritical. The main issue is family and healthy family. Not barefoot momma in the kitchen all day.

Rick on September 5, 2008 at 5:24 PM

baldilocks on September 5, 2008 at 5:22 PM

Politically? No. They are there to do a job, and the questions for the qualifications for that job are the same.

Should I run around and say, excuse me ma’am, since you have a period do you think it’s safe for you to own a gun? Or be in the military? Of course, not, it’s asinine.

Spirit of 1776 on September 5, 2008 at 5:25 PM

And if they are not the same, then would it not follow that they would have different roles as parents?

baldilocks on September 5, 2008 at 5:19 PM

Gee…kinda depends on the parents – doesn’t it?

Why does the basic premise have to pertain to ALL parents?

What about individualism?

FiveWays on September 5, 2008 at 5:26 PM

The question asked here reveals to the world the stereotype the Liberal MSM has of Conservative, Evangelical Christian women: that they are supposed to have no career but “children, kitchen and church.”

Sarah Palin blew that conventional wisdom out of the water. All of a sudden, the media is shocked, shocked! that a Conservative woman with five kids and a stay-at-home dad can be that successful in her chosen field. There’s only one problem for the media, though: we in the Evangelical Christian community have known for a long time that women are just as capable of having successful careers and families at the same time, just as the “feminists” and others, are scolding us for doing what they had preached for decades that we were supposed to be.

The article I linked above is a Wall Street Journal must-read.

I agree with you to a certain extent. I don’t think we should change our beliefs about gender roles in order to support her. However, we cannot assume how they manage their home and how much time she spends away from the kids. I think as long as she can manage it in a way where she is still able to spend good quality time with them they will turn out fine. Children of mothers who work often do.

thevastlane on September 5, 2008 at 5:26 PM

My goodness people. No one would even be arguing these issues about Sarah Palin if she was a Democrat. Geez.

Andy in Agoura Hills on September 5, 2008 at 5:27 PM

Look, I’m enjoying the left’s dilemma enormously. That doesn’t blind me. However, Machiavelli, and I, are happy. In war and love, all is fair. In politics it’s only win, or lose. I’d like to win.

Entelechy on September 5, 2008 at 5:20 PM

So what you are saying, in all due respect, is that for yourself, your view is hypocritical but you embrace it for it’s Machiavellian characteristics.

Spirit of 1776 on September 5, 2008 at 5:27 PM

If we elect McCain/Palin, she will be taking care the kids that need the most parenting…the kids in the Senate and Congress that are do-nothing tax and spend liberals and their rino cohorts!

SPCOlympics on September 5, 2008 at 5:29 PM

“These morons understand that the public agrees with McCain’s campaign about this, yes?”

In the media lunch rooms, yes and in the corporate boardrooms. They just need to whine about the unfairness of it all as a fig leaf for the shareholders. I haven’t much of any solid reporting on Palin except for their unguarded shock that Palin was a hit at the convention.

If they were doing their job they would have had some good bio stories about Palin weeks ago at least. Heck, we’ve been talking about her since McCain was a foregone nominee conclusion a months ago. Beldar had a great write-up on her at the beginning of June; now that was solid reporting.

Does this Obama spokesman have any idea who Laura Ingraham is, and what her opinions are? Laura is as strong and as conservative as they come, and I’d be willing to bet that Laura gave her listeners a huge belly-laugh at this guy’s expense as soon as he was out of her studio!

Steve Z on September 5, 2008 at 5:30 PM

Andy in Agoura, you’re darn right. I said the same, a bit earlier on this thread.

I grew up next to a guy who won a chest full of medals in WWII, Rick.

Never heard about them until his funeral.

He never mentioned his heroism in the 20 years I lived next door to him…once.

Compare that to McCain, who is milking his time out of harm’s way like he won the Vietnam war personally or something…what an embarrassment to soldiers everywhere he’s become in his old age.

alphie on September 5, 2008 at 5:30 PM

Sort of like Bambi’s story, when Bush gave that rebate of $300 my friends just went on and on about it. I held my tongue for months. Finally, I said, “Give it back. You don’t have to accept it. You can send the check back.” They were stunned like they never heard such a crazy idea before.

You Dems have already betrayed the country by lying about a war that key members of YOUR OWN PARTY originally supported.

So what’s a little character assasination thrown on top of treason?

Fixed what for me? I didn’t address whether men and women were equal, but whether they were the same. And if they are not the same, then would it not follow that they would have different roles as parents?

ITs both actually. Men and woman are different in some ways and the same in others.

For politics men and women should have the same opportunities. In other aspects of life Women and Men can take on different roles

I find your attitude offensive.

You are buying into the Left Wing meme about what Conservatives believe, and what THEY say we think.

Are Mother’s important? sure they are… but so are Fathers… and FAMILY is most important of all.

This belief pervades the Conservative world… but because it does not depend on identity politics… the Left can’t get their mind around it…

If I was First Dude? I’d come out swinging with a statement about FAMILY…

Do these dolts not see how the Palin children behave? They are quiet, able to sit still and care for one another. They have obviously been taught good manners, how to care for their baby brother and how to share in the task. What a beautiful commentary on the parenting skills of the Palins.
Yes their child made a mistake with consequences and they are dealing with it and supporting her. Seeing Bristol smile and remain very much a part of this lovely family shows very wise parents. Unless these critics have raised a family of their own who have never erred, they should stop talking.

Yes, and I stand by it. I felt the danger from an Obama admin. a long time ago. Yes, I want to win at all costs because the alternative scares me. I explained often why. The McCain/Palin team should remain calm, polite, but on offensive clear into Nov. 04. There is not time for weakness. A certain amount of hypocrisy was, is, and always will be – these are politics, and it’s a sport, no denying it. I’m fully accountable for my take and hope you won’t ‘divorce’ me.

Entelechy on September 5, 2008 at 5:34 PM

I hope everyone will join me in calling Obama out on this.

Copy of my letter to Obama:

September 5, 2008

Senator Barrack Obama
713 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510

Senator Obama,
Recently, in response to the disgusting attacks by the media on Governor Palin, you stated:

“I have said before and I will repeat again: People’s families are off limits,” Obama said. “And people’s children are especially off-limits. This shouldn’t be part of our politics. It has no relevance to Gov. Palin’s performance as a governor or her potential performance as a vice president. So I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories. You know my mother had me when she was 18 and how a family deals with issues and teenage children, that shouldn’t be a topic of our politics.”

In response to the charge that your campaign staff was involved in these attacks, you stated:

“I am offended by that statement. There is no evidence at all that any of this involved us,” he said. “Our people were not involved in any way in this, and they will not be. And if I thought there was somebody in my campaign who was involved in something like that, they would be fired.”
Senator, I am now calling on you to honor this pledge and immediately terminate Howard Gutman, a member of your campaign finance committee and publically repudiate his remarks made today on the Laura Ingraham Show. The audio of these remarks can be found at:
http://hotair.com/archives/2008/09/05/top-obama-supporter-to-ingraham-shouldnt-palin-be-home-taking-care-of-her-kids/comment-page-1/#comments

Further, Mr. Gutman’s on air remarks have also established a direct link from your staff to websites and blogs that have openly supported and fostered the type of behavior that you condemned in your statements. This is evidenced by Mr. Gutman’s online profile at Huffington Post. For your convenience, I have included a link to the profile here:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/howard-gutman

I demand that you take accountability for the actions of your staff by ordering a full-scale investigation by an independent organization into your staff’s behavior and postings in mainstream and alternative media and that your honor your word by terminating the individuals who are contributing to these repulsive attacks.

Sincerely,

******

The Liberal Media is dead! No stopping this ugly beast from the graveyard. Liberalism must be masked and disguised in order to survive here in America. The MSM has been exposed, and Dan Rathers has much to do with that.

All one needs to do is look at the coverage the Liberal Media gave to the John Edwards story; a huge story as this man was a candidate for potus, with a cancer stricken wife. Then compare the total media blackout to the coverage now given to Sarah Palin. This represents a total removal of any kind of mask or disguise. This is the Liberal media saying to all Americans “we will decide what is the news, and we will decide who we assassinate, just hope it isn’t you.”

Obama has been exposed by his relationships with radical Liberals and terrorists. News is coming out soon regarding Obama’s teachings, as well as his relationship with ACORN and his training by the likes of ACORN. Chicago thug politics, plain and simple. This thuggery will not work on the national level, as will be proven in good time. Obama is freak-n out cause his cover has been totally blown. The best is yet to come on this fabrication called Obama.
