RNCC interview: PUMAs for McCain

posted at 3:55 pm on September 5, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

We’ve heard that PUMAs are mythical creatures, those women who supported Hillary Clinton but prefer John McCain to Barack Obama.  Well, not only do they really exist, two of them felt motivated enough to turn the van around on the way home from Denver to get themselves into the Republican convention.  Last night, my NARN partner Mitch Berg and I talked with Betty Jean Kling and Robin Rollinson.  The two women heard the media slurs against Sarah Palin and made up their mind to show solidarity with the Republican Vice Presidential nominee:

The first question Mitch and I got after talking about this interview with a few other people around the RNCC was whether the two were on the level. They were; Ms. Kling donated to both Hillary Clinton and the Womancount PAC, according to Open Secrets. Since the two women knew each other and traveled together, I’d call that a confirmation of their support for Hillary and their activism on her behalf, right up to last week.

Quite obviously, the treatment of Sarah Palin by the mainstream media has inflamed PUMA anger all over again. Most of them may not have been motivated enough to come to St. Paul and declare open support for Palin and McCain, but at least two of them were. Listening to them, they don’t seem like lunatics or attention seekers. In fact, they were a lot of fun and remarkably rational, as viewers will see for themselves.

Will more PUMAs follow suit after the relentless attacks on Palin and her family in the media? If these two women can make the trip to St. Paul, many more can make the shorter journey to support Palin at the voting booth.

They’re not “Hillary” supporters, they’re sexists. “Hillary” is a liberal democrat. Palin is a conservative Republican. But these two morons only see “woman.”

Kick ‘em to the curb.

Some of the older Democrats might cross over–however, don’t hold your breath for the younger ones.

Young Democrats are unbelievably vapid.

One of the greatest obstacles to real reform in America is our public education system. It is:

1. Ineffective
2. Corrupt
3. Leftist (a term defined by #1 and # 2 above).

I am continually shocked at the low level of awareness and ability in recent college grads (and no I am not an old curmudgeon…). These kids are indeed brainwashed.

As Dinesh D’Sousa noted, the problem in our educational centers is too great to fix–we just need to wait until the current 60’s generation of professors die off.

Meh, skirts kinda close to an islamic axiom.

It almost makes sense that they seemed rational. It will depend on where they divide their allegiances. If they consider themselve women first, then democrats, I suspect those would be the component that is PO’d over Gov. Palin’s treatment.
However small that component is, bring it.

There are right in that the Democrats are no friends of women. The republican party can give them a soft landing. We may not have the same ideology, but we aren’t sexist.

Well, sir, when 55% of the population are women, they top attendance in college and are on the verge of (if not already did) taking over in the work force…

Why would you ignore this demographic as a whole or part when any part of it above the party line is gravy?

And, I would think that anyone who thinks most voters vote on ideas as opposed to identification with a group would be seriously fooling themselves. Even dangerously.

Then again, that’s why you don’t run for political office and don’t run anyone’s campaign.

Kat_Mo on September 5, 2008 at 4:22 PM

My mom, the lifelong Democrat, and her friends are all PUMAs in support of McCain. Mom, now vacationing in New Zealand, talked to me before she left on her trip saying she was excited about Palin being on the ticket.

PUMAs are no myth…

Oh, and just ask her about Barack Obama. She’s a walking encyclopedia of why to vote against him, and is quick to tell you of how McCain is a true hero and patriot.

beatcanvas on September 5, 2008 at 4:23 PM

I’m sure Obama is wondering why all these sweeties can’t get over it. Afterall, their head sweetie (Hillary) did, and gave a speech in support of his candidacy – - so get with the program…

Operation CHAOS involved Republicans voting for Clinton in a machiavellian attempt to help McCain become president.

Operation PUMA would involve Clinton supporters voting for McCain in a machiavellian attempt to help her become president.

Oh, the irony!

Hillary Rodham Clinton has no intention of becoming a Sarah Palin attack dog — but has no qualms going after John McCain, people close to the former first lady say.

CanadianGuy on September 5, 2008 at 4:24 PM

Since sexism is all the rage with the cool kids, let me leave you with this. Bush got 48% of the chick vote in 2004. The addition of Palin and the alienation of Clinton supporters will easily push this number up to just south of 60% for McCain/Palin.

This race is over thanks to smart campaigning, Obama’s self-destruction and PUMA’s like these two.

Too late, if McCain only decides to do one term. 4 years as VP makes Palin look pretty formidable, if she continues strong as she appears. VP choices by Barry and McCain moved all the chess pieces around.

I’m not sure if you’re responding to me, but I admit to not always being practical. I’m sort of echoing the criticism of McCain about “crossing over the aisle.” I’m a partisan, and want my ideas and ideals to prevail. I don’t really believe in a “big tent” of ideas, just a “big tent” of people who share them. Rush Limbaugh often says that when you run as a true Conservative, you win every time. Now I don’t know about every time, but even most would be OK with me. I wish these woman would have been won over by our ideas, and not Palin’s gender.

I like them. WELCOME PUMAs!

Blake on September 5, 2008 at 4:48 PM

I have visitd many of the PUMA blogs and they are all upset at the sexism so apparent to them in the Democrat primaries. Many are as frightened of Obama and his connections to so many unsavory people and the Chicago machine. Many are mad about his ‘Sweetie” comment and his assumption they will just fall in line. Many are upset about how Obama campaign subverted votes via various means. Some will vote for MCCain, some will not vote top of ticket and others may go to another candidate. What impressed me was that generally the blogs and comments are in good taste and totally different from the far left blogs and the leftist comments written on conservative blogs. The one bit of their logic that I cannot understand is that they are unhappy with the DNC, Brazille, Pelosi, Reid and the superdelegates that sold their votes to Obama and yet they intend to vote stright Dem down ticket. How will they regain the old Democrat party when they plan to vote for those who will more than likely continue to allow Reid, Pelosi et al retain their power base within the Dem party. If any PUMAS can explain this I would like to understand their position.

I agree. But counter-argument:

Did McCain pick Palin because she is a maverick or because she’s a woman?

I don’t know the answer, but if it was because she is a maverick, etc, then they came over for their own reasons. Not because McCain sold gender. ie if they buy the product for reasons other then advertised, that’s their decision, doesn’t hurt the brand.

I heard these ladies on local radio yesterday. And don’t know that I will listen to the whole thing posted here but…

If I understand it. They think that if Obama is sucessful in using sexism as a successful tacit that it will be a long long time before another women will be chosen as part of a Presidential Ticket.

They basically put aside the other typical feminist issues and decide that fighting sexism is the MOST IMPORTANT feminist issue.

I think that makes sense and I’m glad that they want to join us. Because Obama is really wrong for the country.

I LOVED THAT VIDEO! Is that song going to get another nasty gram from the owner? Because it’s a winner.

petunia on September 5, 2008 at 5:13 PM

…and that we have to make common-cause with fools like those two in the video.

A few years back, a friend and I had a conversation about aliens and govt cover-ups. The basic gist was my friend, being a Lefty, saying, “I totally think the govt knows about aliens and just arent’t telling us. Don’t you?” To which I replied, “No, but even if they do, I don’t think it would be a particularly good idea to release that info to the public…not until they were sure that aliens either posed a threat or didn’t.”

“What?!? Are you crazy? Don’t you think that people have a right to know?” To which I replied, “It’s not about any ‘right to know’…it’s about responsibility. You go broadcasting something like that out…without being able to frame their visits into some sort of context…and you’re going to unleash a slow, creeping mass hysteria.”

“That wouldn’t happen! Man, if an alien spaceship landed here, I wouldn’t be scared. I’d think it’s awesome!” To which I replied, “I really doubt that. It’s easy to say something like that when it’s just some hypothetical exercise in fantasy. It would be quite another thing to see an actual physical object – the likes of which you’ve never seen before – float down from the sky, land in the middle of your street, and witness actual being – that isn’t human come – out of it. My guess is that you – and most people – would sh!t there pants and run for the hills.”

That story illustrates where I think we are as a society politically, JiangxiDad. People like us would love to hear someone like a McCain say this:

“People, I’m going to be straight with you. Western Civilization is heading towards utter calamity. By allowing Leftists to gain absolute control over the information streams – i.e. news media, education, and entertainment – we have allowed the vast majority of our citizenry to be bamboozled into accepting ridiculous notions like never-ending entitlements, nihilistic moral relativism, and unworkable multiculturalism.

In another 40 years, $1 out of every $5 that our economy produces in a year is going to be confiscated just to pay for two – TWO – entitlements: Soc Security and Medicare/Medicaid. The average American taxpayer is going to have 50+% of his/her income confiscated by govt. This is simply unworkable and is – not may, is – going to lead to an economic collapse. We have to start acting now if we want to have any hope of averting this.

But you know what? If he did so, he’d lose the election by 30%. It would scare the sh!t out of people, and they’d go running to the Big Mommy Party to “make it all better!”

Unfortunately, the millions of dollars that the Soviets funneled into this country between the 1950’s and 1980’s ($49 million to the Communist Party USA alone) paid off. Our citizenry – through media, schools, and entertainment – have been fed a steady diet of Leftist propaganda and ideology for 40+ years, and the damage is done. And it’s irreversible…the only thing that’s going to break this ridiculous ideology’s stranglehold on Western Civilization now is some sort of disaster. And while this may sound harsh, I can only hope that it happens somewhere in Europe first, so that it may serve as a wake-up call to Americans and other Westerners.

rvastar on September 5, 2008 at 5:14 PM

Brave women.

I’m sure they heard lots at the convention that they didn’t agree with.

Did they indicate whether they were treated with civility? I suspect they were, and wonder whether a lifelong Republican would be treated the same way among the hard left convention Democrats?

Sorry, but I just can’t be thrilled to accept people like this into the fold. We all know many will be voting for Obama because he is a black man and we recognize that it’s wrong. Why is it right to be excited that these woman will vote for McCain because there’s a double X chromosome on his ticket. Just as wrong as the first example. It’s basically just stupid people voting for stupid reasons, and I’m not sure how “good” that should make us feel.

Great comment.

Re PUMAs: I have great optimism that, once they get a look around our tent (the real one, not the cartoon they’ve been led to believe it is), a number of them will opt to stay. A lot of liberals are that way because they think that liberals care, and conservatives are heartless. But these women are also very perceptive, smart, loyal, and activist. Exactly the kind who can see that it’s exactly the reverse — and move in permanently.

Just as good, they were won over by our ideals over the liberals ideals.
Everything important takes several steps to accomplish. In time these women will realize, like most logical people, that the fight for human life is an honorable goal.
Remember some of our most ardent supporters and leaders were once liberals. Tammy Bruce still has liberal areas of her life, but is a great example of someone crossing over. David Horowitz is another.
Our party (and leaders, maybe someday Lieberman) is made up of many of these recovering “liberals”. Even people like KP are getting fed up, she says no way will she vote for McCain, but give them two more weeks of this stuff and she is in the fold.

If It Ain’t Close – They Can’t Cheat

rhodeymark on September 5, 2008 at 7:59 PM

Wasn’t Betty Jean the poster girl for WWII armament production? I think she was a welder. Anyway these are typical northeast chicks. They are tough as nails. Thats how they grow them up here. These two could use a little conservative babe exposure to bring out their female side. If not there is a danger they could spew the dem talking points all over the place and ruin our perfectly good conservababes.

sonnyspats1 on September 5, 2008 at 8:02 PM

Hey, I’m a registered Democrat and I voted for Hillary. I’m with these ladies. I’m voting for McCain/Palin! Maybe even twice!

Aloha all:

Can anyone tell me why I am unable to load the videos from media.eyeblast.org on my mac? This is the third or fourth video that has been posted at HotAir from this media site. Any ideas would be most apreciated.

lefaucheur on September 5, 2008 at 9:26 PM

i got a kick out of these two ladies. While I don’t agree with them that gender trumps ideology, it’s good to see some dems see the light.

Bob's Kid on September 5, 2008 at 9:43 PM

Today, she showed up at work with this

Oh my gosh, that would totally unhinge my lefty next-door neighbors!

While I don’t agree with them that gender trumps ideology, it’s good to see some dems see the light.

Bob’s Kid on September 5, 2008 at 9:43 PM

They haven’t seen the light. They would vote for Eva Braun.

coldshot on September 5, 2008 at 10:15 PM

Ehhh…we should be the Big Tent Party. The trouble with ideological purists is that there are only 10 of you. I love Sarah and put in my 2c worth last week about what a great pick she would be. But I can’t say that I was unaware that a huge part of my enthusiasm was just because she is a woman, and that tactically and strategically that made her the right pick. She is wayyyy to the right of me on religious issues, but that’s not as important as being *generally* to the Right.

Let’s see which way the 2 above vote in 2012 when she might be running against Hillary. In the meantime, a vote is a vote, and whatever makes people wander off the Liberal plantation is to be encouraged.

Fortunata on September 5, 2008 at 10:25 PM

…once they get a look around our tent (the real one, not the cartoon they’ve been led to believe it is), a number of them will opt to stay.

This is actually a very good point, and thanks for making it, RushBaby…mainly because it’s reminiscent of my own journey from brain-dead Leftist to rational human being.

How brain-dead, you might ask? I was a Jerry Brown campaign volunteer in the 92′ Dem primary.

I challenge any other reformed Leftists to top that one :)

Seriously though, I know from experience that all it takes is for the slightest crack to appear in the foundation.

rvastar on September 5, 2008 at 10:33 PM

Almost on page 2 yet?

rhodeymark on September 5, 2008 at 11:15 PM

RushBaby, rvastar:
I blush to think what an unblinking, unthinking little Lefty I might have been perceived to be *ahem*, 20 years ago or so.

Fortunata on September 5, 2008 at 11:31 PM

Forget the name PUMA, IMHO…

just get on board with McCain/Palin and enjoy the ride..

Then you can slam the nutroots and media for the next 4 years for being in the tank for Obama.

The media needs to pay a price for the bias.

Here’s something from my inbox – Ed should approve:
.
“We, in Ireland, can’t figure out why people are even bothering to hold an election in the United States.
.
On one side, you have a pants-wearing lawyer, married to a lawyer who can’t keep his pants on, who just lost a long and heated primary…
Against a lawyer who goes to the wrong church who is married to yet another lawyer who doesn’t even like the country her husband wants to run.
.
Now…On the other side, you have a nice old war hero whose name starts with the appropriate Mc terminology married to a good looking younger woman who owns a beer distributorship.
.
What in Lords name are ye lads thinking??”

rhodeymark on September 6, 2008 at 1:25 AM

for these PUMA’s part of it needs to be vote for McCain/Palin and restore fairness and balance in the media, not only is Washington broken, but the media is TRASH! and it Needs to be fixed!

The Media is basically the 4th branch of the government, the branch that interacts with the people everyday and that gives us our information, the media has been giving nothing but negative propaganda for 8 years, trying to break our spirits, screaming about little setbacks from the rooftops and on the front pages and in the headlines, and all of our successes and good deeds have been hidden on page 39 and just scarcely mentioned if at all… the media has an agenda and it needs to be corrected.

Washington needs an enema and so does the Media.

Chakra Hammer on September 6, 2008 at 2:14 AM

My mother is 84. A Chicago Dailey Democrat. And now a PUMA. And the funny thing is, if you go through the issues with her, one by one, and ask her opinion, you would think she is a Republican or a (small l) libertarian. While she identifies herself as a Democrat, she doesn’t think that way. And the party she once knew has moved significantly left.

There may be more of these about than one would think. And they are a viable source of votes, and a potential source of new conservatives, after they get over the shock of the label.

And by the way, “kick ‘em to the curb” is no way to make them feel welcome and to have them stick around long enough to get past the cognitive dissonance and realize that they really are conservatives. And this race is not won yet. We need all the help we can get. Come on, page two!

After the election, buddy. – Attila (Pillage Idiot) on September 5, 2008 at 4:03 PM

I know, I know. But it stings. We’re the party of superior ideas about governing, stemming from the use of our god-given brains. I just cannot stand this identity politics bullcrap, and what it’s doing to my country, and that we have to make common-cause with fools like those two in the video. But I bow to your practical suggestion. – JiangxiDad on September 5, 2008 at 4:13 PM

JiangxiDad, It’s not just “practical,” but also one way many people come to conservatism. Not everyone was born into a conservative family and grew up only around conservatives.

The saying goes, “I didn’t leave the Democratic Party. The Party left me.” This takes years to occur for many. Sometimes it takes the “shock” of perceiving a “betrayal” of sorts.

In any case, these two women, at 50 and 61, may just now be coming to the point of such a “change/growth” and IMO shouldn’t necessarily be criticized for it, but encouraged to share their perspective (sure, maybe it’s temporary and they’ll go back to being “liberals” at some future point, but one never knows) … and for more than just the immediate purpose of electing McCain/The Glasses in ‘08!

Lockstein13 on September 6, 2008 at 6:46 AM

Thanks skeeter

rhodeymark on September 6, 2008 at 7:25 AM

They’re not “Hillary” supporters, they’re sexists. “Hillary” is a liberal democrat. Palin is a conservative Republican. But these two morons only see “woman.”

Kick ‘em to the curb.

JiangxiDad on September 5, 2008 at 4:01 PM

After the election JiangXi….

nothing more satisfying than hitting your opponent with his own tools.

sven10077 on September 6, 2008 at 8:14 AM

This video is proof that our opponents, outside of the leadership of their party, are not our enemies. Normal Democrats want many of the same things normal Republicans want.

However, the leadership which advocates the Defeat of the country in ANY war, thru withdrawal or capitulation, is an ENEMY of the country. That isn’t just a difference of opinion where our security is concerned. You are either for Victory in war, or you accept Defeat.

Dhimmicrats will not lift a finger to change our true enemies’ mindset and motivations. That makes them one with our enemies. Some things are not negotiable with a terrorist enemy. Like these two ladies lives, and my family’s lives.

What well spoken and articulate young ladies these two are! Thank you for your clear and civilized opinions, ladies. You are welcome at the debate table anytime, anywhere in the Republican party.

Let me state with the PUMAs that woman’s rights are human rights. I have a yellow dog democrat family. I have explained that I only want to see my nieces in a burka if they wants to wear them. I am arguing to them that McCain will keep the country safe. No Islamic country has universal health care. No Islamic country allows abortions. No Islamic country allows atheists equal protection under the law. No Islamic country has anything like the ACLU. No Islamic country allows gays equal protection under the law. If the liberal in your life thinks any of the above list is important they should be voting for John McCain, because he will keep the country safe so we can argue about that list later.

talking_mouse on September 6, 2008 at 8:37 AM

The day Palin was announced I was talking with an old Democrat lady who thought it was a stupid move on McCain’s part.
I said, “What? A woman is just as capable as any man, isn’t she?”
The Democrat agreed, then she said under her breath, “Not a Republican woman.”

Doug on September 6, 2008 at 8:49 AM

It might be ’sexist’ to merely want a woman, but I feel reacting to them as such misses the very good point that they did make at the end of their interview.

If the media and the left succeeded in driving Palin from the race, they are entirely RIGHT that the parties wouldn’t nominate ANY women in the near future for the top of the ticket. It’s not a mystery why we haven’t seen a real female contender before Hillary since Ferraro. Twenty four years, folks. And it’s untrue that there haven’t been women qualified to hold the position/s, on either side of the aisle.

Their point is valid. It could easily be argued that it’s not the most important reason to vote someone into high office, but you cannot argue that they’re blowing irrational smoke.

I think that the DNC are morons for ignoring folks with this point of view. They handled the Hillary situation BADLY.

Never underestimate the power of a pissed off woman.

GeeWhiz on September 6, 2008 at 9:09 AM

I can identify with these women. I am about their age and worked my way up in corporate America to a mid-high level executive position in a major corp due to hard work and good men who believed in me. I did this while a wife and mother of a child who had health problems during a time when few women were given the chance to in a “man’s world”. It wasn’t easy but it all worked out well for my family and my employer and me.

I am a conservative woman, but I admired Hillary Clinton and I was angry at how she was treated during the primary season. I even sent her some money as I wanted to support her somehow, even though I probably would not have voted for her. Now, I see a conservative woman being beaten up by the press, by the bloggers, by magazines, newspapers, etc. and I am no longer just angry, I am furious.

GeeWhiz (above) summarized us well.

justdianne on September 6, 2008 at 9:31 AM

Puma-licious!

In America, black men could vote over 100 years before women could vote. These women make good points.

Mojave Mark on September 6, 2008 at 10:31 AM

GeeWhiz on September 6, 2008 at 9:09 AM

Now I’m curious. Does anyone have a good idea of how much, if at all, Ferroro was attacked by Republicans in sexist ways? I’m ignorant on this score. Can it compare favorably to the Democrats the past weak?

Count to 10 on September 6, 2008 at 11:29 AM

Ferraro was actually hit hardest over her husband, IIRC
