Panicky Messiah turns for help to the only woman who can save America from Palinmania

posted at 12:49 pm on September 5, 2008 by Allahpundit

Thus is the final battle joined.

Or is it?

Senator Barack Obama will increasingly lean on prominent Democratic women to undercut Gov. Sarah Palin and Senator John McCain, dispatching Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton to Florida on Monday and bolstering his plan to deploy female surrogates to battleground states, Obama advisers said Thursday…

Obama aides said they were counting on not only Mrs. Clinton but also Democratic female governors to rebut Ms. Palin — and, by extension, Mr. McCain. Those governors include Janet Napolitano of Arizona and Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas…

“What McCain has done with Governor Palin’s nomination is aim right at a demographic that Obama needs to address quickly: noncollege-educated women,” said Mike McCurry, a former spokesman in the Clinton White House. “They need to maximize Biden’s ability to reach out to them, but at the end of the day, it is Obama who has to get that very, very critical group.”…

Advisers to Mrs. Clinton said that she stood ready to help the Obama-Biden ticket, but they urged the campaign not to overestimate the impact Mrs. Clinton could have, noting that she had other commitments this fall, like campaigning and raising money for Senate candidates.

The CW after Palin’s speech was that Hillary’s the big loser because there’s another prominent woman around to usurp her throne. Just the opposite: Now Her Majesty gets to play kingmaker by dispensing her gender cache to whatever greater or lesser extent she sees fit to counter Palin. Obama’s at her mercy. Either McCain wins and finishes off Obama’s presidential ambitions, clearing the way for her in 2012, or else Obama wins with Hillary’s stature as feminist pope bolstered by having helped keep the sisterhood in the fold. The problem with the second strategy is that if she hits the trail in earnest and McCain wins anyway, it’ll be taken as evidence that her moment with women has passed. Better to sit back, half-ass it, and let the media decide later that she wasn’t really trying so that the thought of her deploying her army of women in 2012 still strikes terror into the GOP’s heart. Which, it sounds like, is what she’s going to do.

Incidentally, am I mistaken or wasn’t the left very indignant indeed last week that McCain would stoop to playing identity politics with women’s votes? And yet here we are, with the Light and the Way set to roll out an army of surrogates to counter Palin, all of whom coincidentally happen to be female. The Times actually played up that fact in its original headline for this story, before surreptitiously changing it sometime last night to make it sound less cynical and damaging to Obama. Althouse caught them in the act. Exit question: How many progressive Obama supporters at the Florida rally will greet Hillary wearing “Bros Before Hos” t-shirts?

Update: Here’s how flat-flooted Team Barry’s been caught: They’re apparently still pushing the Eagleton meme.

And Hillary will torpedo him. Excellent.

Too little too late. Hillary women will not be swayed by some grudging requests to save his sorry campaign

clnurnberg on September 5, 2008 at 12:53 PM

I don’t think she’ll help him. Better for her ambitions if he loses. If he wins she’ll always be in his shadow no matter how much she plays the role of top feminist. She may be able to be a major power broker but she still won’t be POTUS.

Yep, although it seems like lightyears away now. The left’s talking points have changed so much, I don’t even know if any particular “meme” sticks more than 18hours.

Besides, do you think the left would even recognize the cognitive dissonance beating them in the face?

I guess Mike Curry thinks that just because there are women who are not “college educated”, he must assume they are just “small town girls”. Ugh.. the stupidity of rejects and elitists ASTOUND me!

upinak on September 5, 2008 at 12:55 PM

On that note, I’d like to take issue with a blurb on The Corner this morning.

He is standing in the way of the first black president.

Nordlinger warns McCain that’s it’s “ticklish”. HelLO? Has he not taken into account that, conversely, OBAMA is standing in the way of the FIRST FEMALE Vic-President?

And has completely blown his opportunity to salute THAT little historic event.

Don’t think that we haven’t noticed.

BHO not picking Hillary as VP will rank up there as a seminal moment when an election is lost, not dissimilar to Nixon neglecting to shave before his TV debate with Kennedy.

so that the thought of her deploying her army of women in 2012 still strikes terror into the GOP’s heart. Which, it sounds like, is what she’s going to do.

If McCain/Palin win in November then Hillary’s feminist appeal will shrink considerably by 2012 since by that time there will already have been a woman in the white house.

lorien1973 on September 5, 2008 at 12:58 PM

There’s always the *cough*, so this is all academic I guess, but I don’t think the national ticket has any real legal weight. The real part of the Presidential race is the slate of electors that people are voting for in each state. I don’t think the ticket names matter for anything other than party reasons and individual state ballot requirements. We don’t vote for tickets, but for electors, so I can’t see how the ticket really matters all that much. I could be wrong on this, but this is how it seems to me.

And what can Hillary say….She has no experience…She was never married to a GOV or PRES…and never used that experience to get elected….so what experience does she have…..is that the kind Woman you want to be the First Female VP of our country? Besides Billary is pulling for Palin gives her a shot in 2012…

Watching Janet Napolitano on stage will be like watching paint dry.

Mr_Magoo on September 5, 2008 at 1:06 PM

Ugh. It’s bad enough to deal with her as governor. I don’t want to inflict her on the rest of the country.

*eats*

Grue in the Attic on September 5, 2008 at 1:10 PM

She’s not gonna do it. She’s too pissed.

MadisonConservative on September 5, 2008 at 1:10 PM

This is like the treaty Ribbentrov and Molatov negotiated.

And Obama is Stalin.

NoDonkey on September 5, 2008 at 1:10 PM

Let’s see. Obama humiliates Hillary and now he needs help from her against her friend John McCain. LOL

RobCon on September 5, 2008 at 1:11 PM

McCain needs to try and get Ferraro to endorse

jp on September 5, 2008 at 12:54 PM

I don’t think it will happen, but her lack of an endorsement for BO says alot. So will the “help” Hillary might provide (if she doesn’t have anything more pressing to do, like pay off debt).

I think they are both pretty much telling him to pound sand.

And I don’t blame her one little bit

clnurnberg on September 5, 2008 at 1:11 PM

they urged the campaign not to overestimate the impact Mrs. Clinton could have, noting that she had other commitments

…such as covering her tracks, hiding evidence, preparing denials, etc. You know, the stuff she’s been doing on a daily basis for 20 years.

whitetop on September 5, 2008 at 1:11 PM

I think the polls show that she moved more independent men then women.
Obama’s problem is more then just “women”, it is the public at large.
Hillary has him by his b*lls, and now she squeezes. No way does she (and other women) really help him…after all she has other “obligations”, like running for president in 2012…

right2bright on September 5, 2008 at 1:12 PM

“What McCain has done with Governor Palin’s nomination is aim right at a demographic that Obama needs to address quickly: noncollege-educated women,” said Mike McCurry, a former spokesman in the Clinton White House.

Is it me or is he saying that “college-educated women” support abortion and “noncollege-educated women” don’t and is bringing into question their intelligence?

.

GT on September 5, 2008 at 1:12 PM

Hillary has her eye on 2012.
If Obama is around then, it is totally over for Hillary.
Hillary (and Bill) will do the absolute minimum for Obama.
And when they both go to vote in November it will not be for be for Obama.

And it just shows how insecure and worried Obama is.
The Obama camp is in a panic.
Bill and Hillary must be having a grand time making calls to all that snubbed them and snidely remarking, “We told you so!”

And the Republicans haven’t even started attacking.
