Oprah afraid of Palin? Update: Oprah responds

Perhaps the Carney meme of Sarah Palin being afraid of the media is a case of projection.  Drudge reports that Oprah Winfrey will not invite the first woman on a Republican ticket to be a guest on her show.  Why?  She’s apparently afraid of the damage it will do … to Barack Obama:

“Half of her staff really wants Sarah Palin on,” an insider explains. “Oprah’s website is getting tons of requests to put her on, but Oprah and a couple of her top people are adamantly against it because of Obama.”

One executive close to Winfrey is warning any Palin ban could ignite a dramatic backlash!

One might assume that, given Winfrey’s demographics.  The largest part of her audience is white females over 55 years of age.  Almost four times as many women watch as men, although she does get about 1.7 million men a day to view her show.

How will that audience react to a freeze-out of Palin?  Many want to see Palin speak to their issues, and might assume that the most successful woman in American entertainment would welcome the opportunity to make that introduction.  Instead of making a business decision to do so, though, Winfrey has apparently made a political calculation that Palin will outshine the man she supports for President.

Obviously, someone is afraid of what will happen when Palin meets the American people through the media.  From what I see, it’s not John McCain or Sarah Palin who fears it.

Update: Oprah has issued a statement in response to the Drudge story:

The item in today’s Drudge Report is categorically untrue. There has been absolutely no discussion about having Sarah Palin on my show. At the beginning of this Presidential campaign when I decided that I was going to take my first public stance in support of a candidate, I made the decision not to use my show as a platform for any of the candidates. I agree that Sarah Palin would be a fantastic interview, and I would love to have her on after the campaign is over.

TMZ notes that Obama has appeared on Oprah twice, both before he announced his candidacy for the White House.

She WILL support the black man, but she WON’T support the white woman.

Guys, seriously. Do you even buy this?

She’s not just supporting a black man. She’s supporting a very liberal Democrat who is also a black man. Sure she likely supported him over Hillary because he’s black, but why in the world would any of you believe that just because she supports Obama she should also support Palin?

Do you support Obama? By your own logic that makes you a racist then since you support a white woman.

Esthier on September 5, 2008 at 11:07 AM

oprah.com has a contact form. Let it begin.

Already done.

Just remember… be respectful. We don’t want to give her any excuse to say “it’s all that gosh-darned right-wing hate speech!”

I was respectful, but I told her I thought that this proved that she was a phony about empowering females, and a racist for only considering supporting a black candidate.
Was that disrespectful?

Another media shill for the Obamasiah. They are running scared, The only reason no to have her on her show is that Palin would put into stark relief what a two dimensional cardboard cutout Obama, Oprah and his other minions are. What a load. What about the glass ceiling they are always bitching about? I guess they want that ceiling in place for conservatives only. Hypocrites!

Hey St Olaf, did you know that Oprah has her own church that thinks there are millions of ways to go to heaven and that it does not include going through Christ?
That’s it boy, sick balls.
That should keep Oprah busy for a while.

Geronimo on September 5, 2008 at 11:10 AM

To borrow from J.R.R. Tolkien:

“Oprah is in a cleft stick of her own making.”

She can either freeze out Palin and suffer with the backlash from the folks who pay the bills, or she can do a forced-polite interview with Sarah the barracuda (because a true-polite one wouldn’t be likely, now would it?) and risk pushing Barry even further off the cliff.

Sucks to be Oprah, I suppose.

acat on September 5, 2008 at 11:11 AM

Maybe she’s afraid she’ll cry her fake eyelashes off again.

“I cried my eyelashes off,” she said in the bowels of Invesco Field, moments after Obama accepted the nomination for president before an estimated 84,000 people.

“He’s not an African-American candidate,” she said. “He’s a candidate for Americans.”

Okey dokey.

Brat on September 5, 2008 at 11:11 AM

There’s no way any of the family will appear on any of these shows. Which is why she is Sarah.

Mr_Magoo on September 5, 2008 at 11:02 AM

Seriously, I agree with you. Previous suggestions on either show seems to be mostly by the Liberals amongst us — I can’t see any reason or rhyme or sense at all for Palin to appear on “talk shows”. What a dumb idea, and the two shows mentioned run contrary to her character (and mine and many who respect Palin), so, what’d be the point other than to be DISingenuous.

Oprah is not a cable show. She is broadcast over the airwaves, therefore regulated by the FCC. If she shows blatant political bias then she can be in trouble.

Am I the only one who sees Oprah as a pathetic figure? I am sure she is nice and has done things to help people. And sure she is rich, but so what; money doesn’t buy happiness. But she has listened to so much psychobabel and New Age nonsense for so long she doesn’t know up from down. That it’s all been played out on national television is quite tragic and sad. She portrays herself as enlightened, but I believe she is overwhelmed with inner angst. She will never find what she is looking for unless she starts looking in the right place.

Dr. Phil defended Sarah and Bristol quite well on Letterman. Didn’t The Oprah launch his career?

Frankly, I don’t think there is any reason Sarah or McCain need to go on The Oprah’s show. She needs to stick with hard hitting issues, like Tom Cruise jumping up and down on her sofa.

Best thing Gov. Palin could do is NOT go on this type of show.

These shows are never about policy anyway… they are about celebrity. Don’t do Elen, no to Oprah, don’t do Saturday Night Live… stay above it and do HARD NEWS and Political interviews.

She does not have to pander to the leftist Fame machine… and it would be a mistake if she started to do so as it would diminish her Credibility as a normal person… because only the famous, or the really screwed up, go on these shows.

amkun on September 5, 2008 at 11:27 AM

The Ellen idea has merit. Ellen is not blatantly political, and as has been noted, keeps the show “sweet” and low-key. On the other had, on Palin’s part, it would show an non-condemnatory attitude toward Ellen’s sexual orientation, without explicitly validating it.
This would be a subtle advertisement for the tolerance of Republicans – as opposed to the narrow-minded sexism and racism of “progressives” and “changeists”.
It would also be a manifest declaration of self-confidence on the future VP’s part.

As US Magazine is learning, and Oprah will soon learn, NOT all their readership/viewership are Democrats.

We have the power to influence by doing a few things:

1. Cancel your US Magazine/Rolling Stone subscriptions.
2. Avoid buying them at the checkout counter (Where I buy)
3. Do not watch Oprah

4. Most importantly, send a LETTER as to WHY you are going to do the above things so the editors and Oprah KNOW why they are losing viewers.

If you don’t tell them why you are doing this, they will think it’s another reason.

originalpechanga on September 5, 2008 at 11:31 AM

This would be a huge mistake for Oprah should she follow through and not have Gov. Plain on her programme. It will seriously affect her credibility (not with me as I have never watched Oprah…not even once) because she will expose her bias. Her credibility is based upon being “above the fray”; by this decision would reduce herself, by her own actions, into an everyday political hack. To me it’s suicidal.

rightwingmom on September 5, 2008 at 11:35 AM

Noted liberal Ellen Degeneres had one of the Bush daughters on her show a while back. She did a funny bit where she goaded the daughter to call the President live on the show. It was light-hearted and funny. Degeneres was respectful and got tons of flack from the most left-wing part of the blogosphere; but I don’t see any negative effect on her ratings overall.

I think Oprah could have Gov Palin on the show and keep her Obama-supporter bona-fides by asking some pointed policy questions. That would be fair — and smart. Nobody in their right mind, even on the left, is going to think Oprah is abandoning “the cause” if she is respectful, but challenging, to Gov Palin as a guest. The ones who will cry and moan over at Kos aren’t a big part of her viewership anyway.

But hey, as a member of the VRWC I hope she stays on the current course. Let the media make a big deal about how Oprah wants to blacklist Gov Palin.

Pun very much intended!

Anton on September 5, 2008 at 11:36 AM

If Obama is truly the “one” then wouldn’t this be a great opportunity to show the world that Palin is just a shell game?

If Oprah truly had confidence in her candidate to lead the greatest nation in the world, would she be so afraid of a former mayor of just 9,000?
If Oprah truly believed in a free and open society, wouldn’t the richest woman in America openly accept any challenge to the “chosen one”.
If Oprah truly believed that Obama is the “Candidate for America”, would you be so afraid of this little girl from Alaska.
Maybe Oprah understand more then anyone, that certain people have that “it” factor. Maybe Oprah understands more then anyone who the Americans really are looking for. And Oprah know more then anyone else that race does not play into it, but it is how you connect to the common person, and that connection can’t be defined, it just happens.

Oprah connects, Palin connects, Obama connects to racists, and elitists.

right2bright on September 5, 2008 at 11:37 AM

Oprah hasn’t built a multi-billion dollar empire by being stupid. I believe she’ll do it soon…after suitable media coverage.

What Palin needs to do RIGHT NOW is say “I would love to be on…the sooner the better”. She needs to take advantage of the situation for HER, not Oprah.

Of course, Oprah will probably turn into uber-journalist for the interview…

amkun on September 5, 2008 at 11:27 AM

Yeah, but what does LENO have to do with Oprah (and DeGeneres, however her name is spelled)?

I mean, why suggest Palin go on Oprah or DeGeneres?

If she appears anywhere, it ought to be on LENO but how long is he going to continue to host?

Oprah, DeGeneres, The View, all just celebrity-focused productions and Sarah Palin has far more genuinity about her than to appear on any of them.

LENO, maybe, fine but that’s the only one I can think of that’d be “appropriate” to any degree.

It’s a mistake, too, to try to correlate Palin with “women’s shows”. She seems to be more than that.

What I mean by that, is, that I don’t perceive those type of SEXIST limitations on what Palin’s about. I’m sure she could enjoy herself on most any appearance, but, what might be more appropriate, to use a handy term, is that Palin’s husband appear on, say, THE VIEW. Now THAT I’d watch, ha.

Sarah Palin can skip Oprah. Oprah is already campaigning for Obama, so it makes sense she wouldn’t want to hurt her own candidate. Oprah’s refusal to consider having Sarah-Cuda on is hurting her already. I’m cool with leaving it there.

Perhaps the Carney meme of Sarah Palin being afraid of the media is a case of projection.

That’s it in a nutshell.

On the other had, on Palin’s part, it would show an non-condemnatory attitude toward Ellen’s sexual orientation,

Getting pretty tired of all this “need” to “show” “attitude…toward…sexual orientation.”

Palin appearing on DeGeneres would be, to put it plainly, pandering, just like it was when Obama appeared there (so the YouTube dancing clip indicates).

Palin doesn’t have need to appear on these Talk Shows. Let them try and figure out why.

LENO’s show seems the only decent, reasonable one that I could see Sarah Palin enjoying.

Yes, he did, and I think it was a mistake.

When we have our major Politicians going on comedy shows, it diminishes the gravitas of the position they are running for…

You suddenly end up with things like “Little Bush” on the comdey channel, which makes fun of the sitting President of the US…. or all the pics of Obama dancing on Elen…

How are our enemies going to take us seriously when we SELF portray ourselves in this manner?

Romeo13 on September 5, 2008 at 11:43 AM

I hope Oprah continues with this “head in the sand” approach. The contrast, yet again, with Obama is striking.

It takes months for Obama to work up the stones to face O’Reilly even though O’Reilly has been asking Obama publicly for an interview for months. I do believe that Palin would go on Oprah without delay. Yet again we are able comparing the bottom of our ticket to the top of theirs. Nice!

This is the message that should be posted on Oprah’s forum:

Don’t be afraid, Oprah honey. Remember, Sarah Palin is just a backwoods mayor just one step up from trailer trash whose only success has been reading a prepared speech at the GOP convention. Palin certainly can’t handle the kind of treatment that you, a world-class entertainer, can dish out. Naw. It is Oprah’s show. She gets to decide who is on it for whatever reasons she chooses. Not fascist at all. We all should be willing to defend her right to do exactly that…ramming someone she does not like onto her show is overreaching. That decision is OPRAH’s free speech and we have no right to override it.

And, as with all free speech, there always are consequences. This is really a no-win situation for her. The folks who like Palin are mad at her (free speech again), the folks who hate Palin are mad because Oprah won’t expose Palin as the 2-bit Rethuglican hick they believe she is, and the ones in the middle will go elsewhere for information. Quite a bind for ol’ Opry. Enjoy it!

Because you know that if Oprah thought she could rip Palin to pieces on the show there would be an invite in 2 seconds…

I am sure that she is supporting a liberal Democrat but she has in the past allowed equal time to the candidates, why not now? That being said I have a hard time blaming African Americans plans to vote to Obama. It is historical and they have been fed a constants staple of victimism. Apparently her ratings suffered when she first backed Obama, simply because she has always appeared above politics. This is going to hurt her again. Since I don’t watch her anyway, I won’t write asking her to have Gov. Palin on her show.

120pages on September 5, 2008 at 11:55 AM

OK, this is not going to be a popular post. It is Oprah’s choice who she wants on her show. She is the business owner. If she wants to make said choice based on politics instead of good business sense that is her choice. I want a business owner to make his/her own choice for whatever reasons s/he wants to — thats a free market.

I make a political choice over a business choice every time I fill my gastank. Citgo is always cheaper than others, but I will not buy it, due to politics. So if Oprah wants to say who come on her show based on politics (she wants Obama to win) that is her business because she owns the business.

Write her advertisers, yes. But don’t deride a business owner the choice of how she runs her business.

If the “Us” cancellation of subscriptions has taken off to such a good start…maybe time to get “Oprah” off the air as well. Contact the pruducers. Contact you local affiliates, and cable service. Contact Oprah’s sponsors.

Shall I place this in different terminology for you?

Oprah willingly interviews Obama, but refuses to grant equal opportunity for Gov. Palin. I’m not a woman, but that seems to be sexist to me.

Bill O’Reilly willingly not only grants, but also requests interviews to both parties. Fox News does the same. Yet the left seems to want to demonize Fox because they follow the thinking that free press, and equal opportunity press is a Constitutional right.

This isn’t about support, it’s about the left-wing MSM machine DENYING equal voice and opportunity to Conservatives.

Conservatives realize that the left-wing strategy for stifling and controlling voters is to attack young teenage girls and deny air time to conservatives, while the conservative strategy is to ask the hard questions that the MSM won’t, because we know that all we need to do is let the Liberal marxists of this country voice their opinion to show how loony they are.

You can’t deny that Oprah has jumped on Hollywood’s left-wing “business as usual” bandwagon.

(Republican Ticket) * 0.5 > (Democrat Ticket) * 1.0

Translation:
Even 50% of the republican ticket is worth more than 100% of the Democrat ticket

Oprah is afraid her carefully crafted liberal illusion will shatter.

tarpon on September 5, 2008 at 12:01 PM

Well stated…

right2bright on September 5, 2008 at 12:08 PM

I think Oprah’s bank account justifies her belief that she has arrived and no longer needs to do anything she doesn’t want to do. That’s fine.

Cindy Munford on September 5, 2008 at 12:04 PM

If she felt she was still oblidged to do things she didn’t want, she would have quit when she had a few million in the bank and retired. Someone with hundreds of millions in the back is not in it for the money (not anymore, anyway), and that wasn’t my point. My point is that she lives for ratings, etc. and this is a ratings bonanza and she knows it.

Palin will be on Oprah by the end of next week or I’ll eat my hat.

Does Oprah normally have Presidential or VP candidates on her show? I’d love to see Palin as a guest, but has Biden been on? Will he be?

Oprah is indeed making a mistake. That’s a good thing. As Napoleon said, never interrupt your enemy when she is making a mistake.

What? You don’t think that Oprah is the enemy? Oprah is a disciple of Marianne Williamson. Williamson’s schtick is to peddle a universalist hodge-podge of miscellaneous mumbo-jumbo that she has selectively assembled out of Buddaism, the Bible, an the occult. In any other century, we would have referred to both Williamson an Winfrey as witches. What does God have to say about witches? Voici:

9 When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. 10 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in [a] the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, 11 or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. 12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD, and because of these detestable practices the LORD your God will drive out those nations before you. 13 You must be blameless before the LORD your God.

Deuteronomy 18:9-13

Palin is WAY better off if she never goes anywhere near Oprah. There is a curse on Oprah and all her kind. I wouldn’t want to be standing in close proximity to her when judgment finally comes.

My collie says:

I’m grow weary of the Hollywood elite and their practice of erecting an artificial barrier of acceptance or litmus test of approval for political candidates. They seem to think that they are the high priests, and that no one can serve in office unless the candidate has been “anointed.” I’ve got news for them: Last time I looked, our laws stated that it is the people of the United States that vote for the members of the electoral college that selects the POTUS — not the high priestess of Hollywood.

I believe she had both candidates in 2004. The One has already graced the show with his presence.

Drudge is now says it’s true. Oprah won’t have Palin on (via TMZ).

I think she discussed retiring a few years ago and the wave of misery from her viewers changed her mind. (Contract ploy) I believe she no longer needs the money and is now making a statement. You might be right about Gov. Palin appearing on her show, I hope not. As I previously stated I would prefer to see her stay local and work on taking back Congress. Someone mentioned in the thread that she sponsors schools in Africa but the truth is that she tried to support schools here in the states but found that the students were too materialistic so she stopped. Irony?

Down goes Oprah.

Down goes US Weekly.

Down goes the Downstream Media.

Oprah said a discussion of Palin being on never took place. Her show is not a political show and will be glad to have her on after the election…
What a liar, she has had Obama on, isn’t he a candidate???

Oprah to Palin: I Can Pencil You In Later

Posted Sep 5th 2008 11:41AM by TMZ Staff

Oprah has issued a statement to TMZ — she won’t put Sarah Palin on her show until after the election.

Here’s the statement: “The item in today’s Drudge Report is categorically untrue. There has been absolutely no discussion about having Sarah Palin on my show. At the beginning of this Presidential campaign when I decided that I was going to take my first public stance in support of a candidate, I made the decision not to use my show as a platform for any of the candidates. I agree that Sarah Palin would be a fantastic interview, and I would love to have her on after the campaign is over.”

For the record, Barack Obama has been on “Oprah” twice — in January, 2005 and again in October, 2006 — before he announced his run for Prez.

I do not watch Oprah often. Many of my friends do… I always feel like she has such a strong opinion that I don’t really learn anything.

At any rate I would love to watch Sarah Palin on Oprah. I think Oprah could be civil and they might find more in common than Oprah thinks. I think they are at least very spiritual women. My guess is that Oprah doesn’t find Sarah’s life interesting. No past abuse to overcome so it just doesn’t interest her. Too normal.

I don’t think Joy whatsherface on the view is capable of listening to any one with a different life experience or view from her own. So that could be interesting to watch Palin be gracious as Joy and Whoopie (who is pretty tolerant) do conipsions! And heaven knows poor Elizabeth could use a kindred spirit.

I actually haven’t seen the view in a couple years now…just the clips that make cable news…

petunia on September 5, 2008 at 12:22 PM

4. Most importantly, send a LETTER as to WHY you are going to do the above things so the editors and Oprah KNOW why they are losing viewers.

If you don’t tell them why you are doing this, they will think it’s another reason

This is actually critical. Poeple think that advertisers just pay for ads in a publication and that’s it. The truth is that advertisers have consultants that search for suitable venues to advertise for thier clients, and they SPECIFICALLY monitor these things (and many others of course) on behalf of thier client. Even if US/Rollingstone tried to keep the feedback from thier advertisers, it’s pretty impossible to do so.

Advertisers, as we all know, have ZERO loyalty to the venues in which they advertise, and will bolt like, well, Hussain Bolt, at the first sign of trouble.

Waterboy on September 5, 2008 at 12:23 PM

You might be right about Gov. Palin appearing on her show, I hope not

You and others have also expressed doubt about Palin appearing on her show. Can I ask why?

Waterboy on September 5, 2008 at 12:25 PM

Palin doesn’t need Dopra for anything. In fact it might be better if she stays off that show. Dopra threw Hillery under the bus for the brotha, B.Hussein Obama. Dopra isn’t for women, she’s for her race. Sarah doesn’t need to sell herself to America we love her already. Stay away from Dopra the Racist and The View morons Sarah.

True story…

My late father once had the misfortune to pilot the plane that Oprah was flying on. She insisted that she be attended to by the black stewardess.

She is just another leftist, black-supremicist, race pimp who has suckered alot of foolish women with her act.

Cody1991 on September 5, 2008 at 12:21 PM

Ah, she’s taking the high road, I see.:) Her only problem is that after the elections, Vice President Palin won’t need to go on her show. Better grab it while it’s available, O.

a capella on September 5, 2008 at 12:27 PM

Hoprah is displaying a very obvious case of politicism.

She’s a politicist!! Plain and simple.

Her female audience are smart enough to think for themselves, and I’m sure this will bite her gigantic rump.

madmonkphotog on September 5, 2008 at 12:29 PM

That gurgling sound you hear is the Obama campaign circling the drain as the leftist media leads the self destruction of the party. I find this highly entertaining.

Wyznowski on September 5, 2008 at 12:30 PM

Frankly, keep Palin off these elitist liberal television entertainment shows. Keep Palin in the news cycle not the entertainment cycle. Hands on, every day or at least a many times a week in real towns, with real people, talking about real issues, and doing real things, face to face with real people.

Palin is above the media fluff crowd. She isn’t out there to impress the media.

In the meantime…upset Oprah’s applecart…hit the producers, advertisers, sponsors…and let them know exactly why you are p.o.’d.

I’m enjoying the heck out of it myself. Let’s see what happens when the word gets out to Oprah’s audience. All they have to do is cancel their subscriptions and turn to another channel. Simple.
