America’s got a fee-vah and the only prescription is more Palin merchandise

Alternative headline: Lucrative new natural resource discovered in Alaska.
Call it “Palin-mania.”
Companies are cashing in on a new craze sweeping the country sparked by the sudden fame of John McCain’s running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, reports CBS News correspondent John Blackstone.
The new cottage industry involves anything carrying her name…
From t-shirts to thong underwear, from the flattering to the not-so-flattering, sales of just about everything related to the McCain-Palin ticket have been flying off shelves, at the just-concluded GOP convention in St. Paul, Minn., on the Internet, and other settings, Blackstone says…
Pain’s leap to fame is also benefiting such Web sites as CafePress.com, which now has an inventory of 137,000 Palin-related items.
5,950 designs to choose from, and naturally Karol’s still not satisfied. Why Maverick’s campaign and the RNC aren’t doing more to make a buck off this, I’ll never know: The McCain store has only standard Mc/P items and the RNC is stuck with generic party crap. I get that they don’t want number two to upstage the nominee, but they can fig-leaf that by offering separate items for both McCain and Palin; the latter will outsell the former two or three to one, but only the RNC will know and after all a buck’s a buck. Exit question: Should Hot Air hop on this gravy train? I’ve been known to do a photoshop or two in my time so designing them is no great shakes. It’s all a question of what you guys are looking for — and of course copyright limitations, which is why designs with images in them, as opposed to just slogans, are dicey. Treacher’s off on the right foot. If you have ideas, chime in below.
Update: I stand corrected. Looks like there is some official Palin merchandise after all.

It’s the glasses. That’s what people want.

MSM were reporting on this last night too. Apparently, eyeglass places are being overrun with women demanding frames like hers. The frame manufacturer is going nuts with shipping the same model everywhere.

I bought a Palin/McCain shirt from CafePress…but I would love something clever with “Hot Air” included on it as well. I can’t wear the same shirt every day for 2 months…so get busy coming up with something AP and I will buy!

the name “biden” surrounded by moose antlers?
“Carribou Barbie” in camouflage, with hunting rifle…words to the effect “one shot, one kill”.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on September 5, 2008 at 6:15 PM
What does it say about the GOP base that they are more enthused about the VP choice than the top dog? Beyond being “historic” isn’t this unprecedented? Did GHWB haters decide to vote for the GOP because of Quayle? Did Eisenhower get votes because of Nixon? Did Clinton secure two terms by having Al Gore on the ticket? Did Reagan need GHWB on the ticket to make him more acceptable to the party base?
Answer to all of the above is no for the “Wise Men” in the audience. McCain needs somebody to deal with the real GOP while he is out there hanging out with liberals. Palin is filling a void in the ticket. She is adding the energy and conservative values that McCain can’t deliver on his own (I swear that I fully expect him to scream “hey you kids get off my lawn” at the press by the time his first term is over).
VP Cheney did much of the same thing for GWB but with a different context. Cheney made it clear that VP was as far as he was ever going to go- which set up a partnership instead of a waiting station until the VP could campaign for the top job. Palin, on the other hand, as VP could well get elected to the top job in 2012 if McCain is a one-termer (setting up the possibility of Sarah Palin v. Hillary Clinton but we aren’t there yet).
My final point is this. Take Sarah Palin seriously as a politician and potential President.

Our blog has been selling this Palin design for the past week. Most of the sales have been from people who have never visited our blog.
By my calculations, I should be able to retire on the profits in just 356 more months. The election won’t wrap up by then, will it?

I ordered some McCalin-Palin sportswear last Saturday. The stuff arrived today. The hat is securely on the head; the shirts are in the dryer.
The thought of Palin in Goldwater glasses brought to mind that pair of glasses on Ricky “Wild Thing” Vaughn (Charlie Sheen’s character) in Major League. Few things are funnier than the scene towards the end of the movie when Sheen makes the long walk to the mound from the bullpen to the song Wild Thing. Now, that might be a song to consider for two mavericks on the campaign trail.

Allah, would a simple astronomy photo (or even a line drawing) of the North Star cause copyright problems? A plain background and caption would be all you’d need to add.
PA Cat on September 5, 2008 at 6:32 PM
A turning point, just like Reagan was.
The media did the same thing to Reagan, but they couldn’t stop him. Palin has that same special “thang” that Reagan had, can’t be defined, she just has it. The media is in a losing battle, and they will get desperate, which will help even more.

I say let people have fun, keep the campaign out of it. The last thing people want is politicians latching on to current trends to make a quick buck IMO. Anyone buying a McCain-Palin theme item will be pro-ticket already. Going for the easy money by offering cute campaign junk for sale at 1-800 ELECTME sounds lame and pandering to me. McCain has been doing GREAT so far, keep on with the message and let independent groups go nuts.

This is very interesting to me. It’s obvious McCain meant what he said when he said he wouldn’t care who gets the credit for doing good (or, apparently, winning a campaign). It’s also obvious Obama’s ego is so large he couldn’t bare to have Hillary over-shadow him. That in itself says so much to me.
