Video: The RNC Palin biography clip you didn’t get to see; Update: Ratings blowout — 37 million watched; Update: Palin’s speech was carried on six networks, Obama’s on ten
posted at 3:11 pm on September 4, 2008 by Allahpundit
Rudy did well enough that we can forgive him for running long and getting this bumped from the program, especially since they’re going to capitalize on the fee-vah and air it tonight. What do the Nielsen ratings look like, you say? Why, like this. For the moment, at least, with curiosity peaking, the Barracuda is an even bigger draw than The One.
They really like the moose-hunting meme, huh? Exit quotation from a former Bush official, citing panic among his lefty friends: “[T]he same reporter who first told me that ‘she’d be toast by Friday’ told me after tonight’s speech that Obama must be wishing that McCcain [sic] had picked Pawlenty.”
Update: Drudge has the numbers: 38.3 million watched Obama’s speech, 37.2 million watched Palin — which is roughly 54 times the population of Alaska. Supah-stah!
Update: Via TLOMB, it’s even more impressive than we thought. Imagine what the numbers would have been like if the media was fair:
The Sarah Palin speech generated 37.2 million viewers, just 1.1 million viewers short of Barack Obama’s record-breaking speech on Day 4 of the Democratic Convention. The Palin speech was carried on only six networks while the Obama speech was carried on ten (including BET, TV One, Univision and Telemundo).

I was wondering why there wasn’t a bio. Rudy did well.

Rudy was great. I like the idea of airing it tonight. Get the crowd all pumped up again for Mac.

Understatement of the day.
Rudy kicked a**!!!

This is the one Jon Voight was supposed to narrate? I have to admit I was disappointed that there wasn’t time for it.
Connie on September 4, 2008 at 3:14 PM
FANTASTIC! Jon Voight introducing America to a real American with real accomplishments. They NEED to show this.

How does this help Michelle’s children?
Hillary threw ashtrays when she got mad, what does the One throw?
Lightning bolts? Foofy pillows? Tantrums? Inquiring minds want to know.
Looking forward to the best concession speech ever, according to the MSM.
NoDonkey on September 4, 2008 at 3:15 PM
I was hoping she’d beat him, but for a politician that’s been in the national spotlight for a week, 37.2 million viewers IS INSANE!!!
nickj116 on September 4, 2008 at 3:16 PM
Thank God he didn’t pick Pawlenty. I don’t buy into this “boring white guy” theme like others do, largely because it’s racist, but Pawlenty sucked. I saw him giving a speech and he came across like Ben Stein’s teacher in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, except more monotone and with less charisma. A real deer in the headlights sort of guy. Had McCain gone that route, it would all be over except for the shouting. Instead, he made what must rank as one of the most brilliant picks in American political history.
McCain, you magnificent bastard!
jaleach on September 4, 2008 at 3:16 PM
McCain should skip the speech and just let her talk again.
Cowboy on September 4, 2008 at 3:16 PM
I thought it worked well to go straight from Rudy to Palin. I know it wasn’t planned, but I think it really gave an even bigger rock to the momentum.

We still need the CNN clip where they tried to ruin little Piper’s moment in the spotlight. It was a video exploration of the sensibility behind this exchange from deep in the black heart of the nutroots:
Wow. Here’s the heart of Obama supporters at DU.
Get used to holding that baby. As soon as you are old enough, you’ll be forced to have some of your own.
kinda reminds me of that asshole wolfowitz
Yep, exactly what I thought of. Lick that comb… must be an acquired habit on the road to Neo-conservatism…

(Update) Let’s see Obama has been campaigning, in the limelight, help by the MSM for 19 months now and Palin was introduced 6 DAYS AGO????? And he only got less than a million more veiwers???? Hahaha
carbon_footprint on September 4, 2008 at 3:19 PM
That is a great clip. I think Rudy straight to Palin worked extremely well last night.
Though I hope they change their mind and don’t air this tonight. We don’t want to feed the cult of personality with displaying her. /sarc
Is that Voight narrating?

picture the reception tonight when palin comes in and sits next to cindy before McCains speech.
its gonna be wild.
zane on September 4, 2008 at 3:20 PM
I mentioned this in another thread, but I’ll repeat it here. Regarding ratings: I think Team McCain should set up Sarah’s first cable news appearance on CNN in the same time slot as O’Reilly’s big Obama interview. I bet O’Reilly’s unassailable #1 rating in his time slot would fall to #2 for the first time in years. It would be a fantastic statement and a slap in BOR’s and FNC’s faces for kowtowing to Obama by interviewing him just a couple of hours before McCain’s acceptance speech.
aero on September 4, 2008 at 3:20 PM
Gov. Palin’s speech was the only part of either convention I’ve watched (and tonight I’ve got other plans). Partly because everyone else is a known quantity and she isn’t. I was definitely impressed. She did come across as someone who’d be up to the task should McCain pass on.

It’s pure desperation on ZERObama’s part to give O’Reilly an interview during the RNC. He has no chance of surviving with dry drawers. And BTW if I were Bill (eewwwwww) I would have said no thanks.
Akzed on September 4, 2008 at 3:24 PM
The Rudy/Sarah back to back is what made it so great at least for me.
Rudy did a little NYC poltical knife fighting and that is why we like the guy. He can deliver body blows and head shots and is not afraid of the media unlike Huck who also is a great speaker but like to ingraciate himself.

I’m glad they bumped the bio. Rudy got the place so jazzed, it made Sarah’s entrance rock even harder.

It would be great if Palin came out tonight and introduced McCain after that video. a quick 1 min speech saying Now Fellow Americian it is my uniqe honor to introduce the next president of the Unidted States…It would place her second for the night, get the delagates fired up, give McCain a smile and give the media something to talk about no matter how the speech goes…

1.) Yes, that is Jon Voight
2.) I liked the Rudy straight to Palin format as well. An added bonus of not showing the video is that it didn’t spoil the Ebay line.

It would be way funnier if they decided they wanted to do the interview at the same time as O’Reilly, but on MSNBC. Given how Repuli-phobic Keith Olbermann is, if they told him Sarah Palin was flying to New York to do the interview at 30 Rock, he’d suddenly be hunting high and low around the world for a hurricane to go cover.

Do remember that there are three of them and their opinions are not always in accord.
I will say that they are the only bloggers (or other media people) who seem willing to recognize the seriousness of Peggy Noonan’s blunder yesterday. Peggy’s explanation in the WSJ strained credulity. And even if it was true, which is a stretch, it shows that she is distracted and unfocused.

I just have to add, I work in a manufacturing facility of about 300 people where politics is traditionally off the table as an acceptable office conversation. I live in a blue state, but sort of a “purplish” area. Sort of a centrist democrat place. This morning when I walked into work it. was. amazing.
People couldn’t stop talking about her. Her kids, her family, her speech, her values. Everyone here loves her, and to a person the sentiment was “finally, one of us!”
And it’s more than just my office. Appears it’s the better part of 37 million of us.

Thank you, MSM, for four days to relentless and lurid Sarah-bashing to make sure that everyone tuned in.
JudetheFossil on September 4, 2008 at 3:40 PM
Tell your day-to-day left-leaning aquaintences that they have nothing to fear in McCain/Palin. That’s what I’m doing. If they think the GOP is corrupt, point out that Sarah has cleaned up at least her state. Ask them if they want us to drill now! Let them know that McCain/Palin do to. Ask them if they think times are hard (I don’t reallly think so, how can you argue they are when the majority of Americans are buying large flat screen TVs) and think that Obama’s outrageous taxes will help. Let them know that McCain/Palin don’t want you to either. Spread the message. It’s not the Gospel but the Republican ticket does bring good news.
shick on September 4, 2008 at 3:40 PM
It’s a good number, but you have to take into account inflation. With the increase in the price of televisions since last week, and demographic changes since late August, Barack Obama’s audience was a good measure larger than that which watched Palin.
YYZ on September 4, 2008 at 3:41 PM
don’t discount the fact that many of the people who support her belong to churches that have Wednesday night services. I think there could’ve been a higher rating for another night.

2. As far as e-mailing the media, send them Steynian notes thanking them for acting so hysterically that over 37 million tuned in to see the highly-acclaimed Palin speech, which not only will have regular Americans falling in love with her, but also trusting the MSM less.

Regrettably, I neglected to mention that the 1 million viewer disparity likely had something to do with Palin not building a temple in her own honor or rent out a football stadium.
Too bad the bio video didn’t make it out last night. Undecideds need to see that one. It pretty much kills the experience argument.
