Video: The jet to nowhere

posted at 2:45 pm on September 4, 2008 by Allahpundit

Via Media Blog. It probably doesn’t pay to make an ad out of it since it risks reminding voters that the issues Palin’s dealt with in the past are penny ante compared to Biden’s record. But it’s still my favorite reform credential of hers, partly because it’s so vivid, partly because of the goofy eBay detail, and of course partly because it harmonizes so well with the “ordinary woman” narrative. What do you think? 15 seconds of this plus 15 seconds of footage of Air Force O? If the left wants to make personal luxury an issue in the campaign, it’s on. Click the image to watch.

Allah, that jet WAS over the top. Supposedly bought to transport prisoners to AZ, yet never did.

Leather Seats, executive type!

I was HAPPY when she put it on the ebay site. Even though it took 3 try’s to sell it.

15 seconds of this plus 15 seconds of footage of Air Force O?

Fits in well with Hannity’s Leer Jet Liberal line. Elitism and ostentatiousness versus down home values and American capitalism (as represented by e-bay).

GoodBoy on September 4, 2008 at 2:51 PM

She must be tech savy if she looked to Ebay to solve a problem. She might not have invented the internet like another VP, but she sure seems to know how to use it.

ThackerAgency on September 4, 2008 at 2:51 PM

Alaska?! Sarah Palin, you are buggin the f*ck out! Do they even have luxury jets in Alaska? Alaska?! Muthaf*ckin’ Alaska? You’re buggin’ the f*ck out! Where’s the reality in that?!

ManlyRash on September 4, 2008 at 2:50 PM

Gov. Murkowski ordered it from the Dept of Revenue. It WAS the Citizens of Alaska who owned it. It was to be used for the Prisoners (violent) to be shuttled to AZ for the lock down prison.

Gov Murkowski used it for his own personal items. When he got, bumped out, Sarah never used it once and sold it right away and had the money put back into whatever area the Dept of Rev took it out of. a total refund.

The plane has also been “refurbished”.

Yeah, the jet only sold for 2 million and Biden wanted to send a hundred times that amount to Iran, no questions asked, to keep the Arabs happy. We all know about Biden’s heavy hitter status.

Alaskans are big users of ebay probably due to the rural nature of the state, its distance from the lower 48 and the long winter. Whatever the reason, ebay use is big in Alaska. Same is true for PR, Canada, Australia and Hawaii.

TheBigOldDog on September 4, 2008 at 3:02 PM

Does it look luxurious? Yes it does.

dKap on September 4, 2008 at 3:04 PM

For those asking, it’s right in the second link:

B

ut the jet’s eBay listing did not prove effective, and the state never got its asking price. Instead, in 2007, the state turned to an aircraft broker, Turbo North Aviation. The jet was purchased that year by businessman Larry Reynolds, the owner of a sporting goods store and marine supply store in Valdez. Reynolds paid $2.1-million.

So it’s true that Palin put the plane up for sale on eBay, but it didn’t sell on eBay. That’s not a huge point, but it is worth noting. We rate Palin’s statement True.

TheBigOldDog on September 4, 2008 at 3:05 PM

Big deal, Barack Obama walks on water and soars on eagle wings.

NoDonkey on September 4, 2008 at 3:05 PM

People up here use Ebay because it is easy and when you are looking for something (especially parts for vehicles) it is cheaper this way then ordering it through your dealer.

Trust me!

It’s a nice, populist touch by the Governor. Maybe she can ask Al Gore to help on global warming by putting his jet on Ebay, sell it to someone who could really use a jet.

Or the people who watched Obama online either. It’s a fair 1:1 38 million for Obama. 37 for Palin. Not too shabby, she’s only a VP after all.

lorien1973 on September 4, 2008 at 3:13 PM

The comparison to Air Force O only invites a counterattack on McCain’s jet and multiple houses.

Comparing a Governor selling an official jet to Pelosi’s demand for a larger one, however, is spot on for a commercial.

Run Pelosi’s many “Change Washington” statements, her House’s abysmal approval rating and productivity record and you have advertising gold.

Keep in mind, the VP’s actual job is to preside over the Senate. Perfect contrast.

Air Force O should be an ad by itself. The man is spending millions of dollars for his own personal plane FOR A CAMPAIGN.

I don’t know why his donors are more upset about this. Are they really just accepting the same old sorry talking points from corporate executives that they HAVE TO have a plane because flying commercial is too darn of a hassle?

Fine. You want some business.

Find me a 2000 Ford Exploder fog light, for less then 20 and ship it regular mail, which would cost 4 bucks maybe.

You have a deal, it is a win win and I would promote you around Anchorage.

You can even send REALLY heavy things via barge. UPS and FedEx are a freaking joke!

upinak on September 4, 2008 at 3:18 PM

Just think, when SarahCuda gets to Washington,
she can show Nancy Pelosi the finer points of
moving Nancy’s “Fat #ss” around Syria and Iran,
in a smaller jet, than a Military type that Pelosi
demands,

and,Sarah can show Nancy Pelosi, how to clean the
“House”,and “Jefferson Freezer”!!!!!!!

And Vice President Sarah Palin can show Nancy, that
“It just might take a Women,a Republican Women”!haha.

Good move on Sarah’s part and she worked it into the speech well. Hannity doesn’t seem to be the best counter example to the left’s hypocrisy though since he’s been noted for requiring private jet travel when asked to speak.

Damiano on September 4, 2008 at 3:16 PM

pretty cool huh!

upinak on September 4, 2008 at 3:23 PM

It is over the top.

But I would bet that most people who were elected wouldn’t have thought so. Air is the way people travel in Alaska. Or by barge. School sports games are often over night trips I understand because of the distance between cities. So having to book on commerical airlines might be a bit different from the lower 48.

But it does show her commitment to citizen government and not losing touch with real people.

I wonder though if she might rethink that personal chef thing if she becomes VP. I’d love a chef!

And I wonder if she would still like to drive herself to work through Washington traffic and the SS details. If she is VP for 8 years, Washington might change her. It changes so many people.

petunia on September 4, 2008 at 3:24 PM

petunia on September 4, 2008 at 3:24 PM

petunia, we don’t “barge” our people here LOL!

Air is the main way, usually for vacation or other items. Driving is the second way (I have dine this quite a few times)

And the Alaskan marine Highway is another but VERY expensive.

Barging is for items, like cars, household, food etc. Air is used mainly for mail and Trucking is used very rarely unless it is is a much needed item. Barging take about a week. trucking takes 3 days (most of the time).

upinak on September 4, 2008 at 3:27 PM

Or the people who watched Obama online either.

Exactly.

I’d be interested to know how many watched online too. I have a TV, but never turn the darned thing on unless my sister is visiting and wants to watch football or NASCAR, especially with the huge new 24′ iMac I am waiting for FedEx to deliver today–even movies are on the computer these days.

:)

When you purchase big things on Ebay you search for items CLOSE to you.
I bought a $10,000 Greenhouse for $250.00 on ebay using the search feature “within 50 miles” of my zip code.

My daughter gets only network TV. She is pretty conservative but openminded and would vote for the right Democrat if one came along. Me too.

Anyway she called after the Obama speech and said, “Wow! he is a good speaker. And last night I was thinking that I could vote for him, and he understands people etc…”
But then she said after the glow wore off she realized that he was all about big government. And the effect didn’t last.

She called this morning… she tried several times until she got me and she was so excited! There is no doubt. There was doubt with McCain, and would have been if he had chosen anyone but Romney… and now Sarah Palin.

She was outraged that anyone was saying anything negative… she thought that the fact that her sister was opening a gas station showed that they are a truly middle class family in touch with real Americans. “Not the ones that work at McDonalds their whole life but people like us…”

Palin gets votes.

Okay do I mean ferries? My sister lived in Juneau for several years and then Anchorage (Eagle Rock) and my nephew played high school basketball and I remember that they had to let him go over night to play and they went by water–I thought. I might not remember correctly. And yeah barge is a word I remember them using….

But they were a family of eight children and when they moved up I’m pretty sure they took a boat of somekind. I remember my sister said she didn’t realize it took so long and they didn’t have nearly enough food.

Now that I think about it, maybe their stuff went by barge… So that’s like saying I trucked myself to Texas or something?

Hey my Brother-in-law used to take people on hunting trips up there for a while and he shot some kind of record Moose. They had it stuffed and when they moved back to WA it hung on the wall in their house but it took up the whole room!!!

They finally had to let a sporting goods store display it but it still belonged to them. Now I think my nephew has it but his house isn’t that big… It must be the same problem my sister had.

Tragic. Does that mean you cannot go to dozens of yard sales on the weekend?

Elizabetty on September 4, 2008 at 3:54 PM

Not that Senators Barry O and Joey B would care about wasteful spending, but if they did, imagine: They first call a hearing to see whether there really is such waste, then commission a blue ribbon panel of their cronies to study the issue, then after 18 months of the cronies feeding at the trough, the panel decides there isn’t sufficient reason to jettison the jet.

On the other hand, Sarah walks in says “How much are we paying for that thing? Really? We don’t need it. Put it on Ebay.” A week later, problem solved, Alaska’s coffers $2 million richer.

BitterClinger on September 4, 2008 at 3:56 PM

It sounded like my mom, saying, “you don’t need those comic books anymore, I’m getting rid of them.”

So, I guess Sarah talking about her predecessor like he was a bad child. Can’t wait to see how she handles Congress.
