And behold your transcript. Sometimes I like him, rarely do I love him, but I’ll always respect him for making it here from Hanoi. How anyone doesn’t, I can’t fathom.
Feel free to use this thread for 2012 conjecture. Fearless pessimistic big A prediction: Palin’s out of politics by then, leading a forlorn party to turn its lonely eyes south towards Louisiana…
Total number of speeches watched this year from either convention: Donut.

GO MAVERICK!
elduende on September 4, 2008 at 11:43 PM
This clearly is not his element. I don’t think he screwed up too bad and he came across as sincere.
Elizabetty on September 4, 2008 at 11:43 PM
Best line right at the end: Stand up and fight!
allah, you should try it sometime. You might like it. ;)
Kat_Mo on September 4, 2008 at 11:43 PM
He and Gov. Palin have won my vote. We’ll see you both in the White House soon, Mr. President and Madam Vice President!
KSgop on September 4, 2008 at 11:44 PM
He had a tough act to follow. A little too Maverick-y for me.

Whose that guy? Where’s the lady from last night?

The end of the speech = major goosebumps. Awesome.

John McCain is a personal hero of mine

I actually fell asleep (gasp!), but the ticket has my vote.
nickj116 on September 4, 2008 at 11:45 PM

2036 Piper and Laura Bush
enough already…..

???? Even if they don’t win, she’ll still get re-elected in 2010 with those approval ratings. I think she’d even be the frontrunner for the 2012 nomination.
It's Vintage, Duh on September 4, 2008 at 11:46 PM
Uhg! is all I can say. Certainly not a speech of a lifetime, but the last two minutes were good.
I’m almost back to holding my nose to pull the level with the “we are all Americans” BS.
Vigilante on September 4, 2008 at 11:46 PM
What do independents want?
From the federal government, how about national security and improved energy policy?
Obama is claiming “economy in turmoil.” Energy is everything, the rest is background noise.
BuckeyeSam on September 4, 2008 at 11:47 PM
McCain steps aside and Palin runs with recently retired General David Petraeus.
D0WNT0WN on September 4, 2008 at 11:47 PM
Allah,
Please see a doctor to remove whatever it is that is embedded sideways in your 4th point of contact. If anyone should be out of politics it should be Obama.

He didn’t catch his stride until the speech was almost over. It’ll do, John, it’ll do. You did enough by picking Palin.

Milking it? Hell No!
Big Mac McCain is a Vietnam War HERO! An American Hero!
A Hero for the ages in this great Country.
Do I agree with him on many political issues? No.
Will I vote for him? Hell Yes!
NoObama is an American…..? hmmm…..thinking…..hmmmmm….
Dunno.
SouthernPride on September 4, 2008 at 11:48 PM
Dont give up allaheeyore. Obama has cruised to the top based on a media driven adolation.
But the media doesnt pick the president.
The Dems did well in 2006 because it was an off year election. That is the best time to do the community organized effort to back candidates.
In Presidentual years the Vote totals rise. More people vote than in off year elections.
Bush won despite a good effort by the Kerry people. It will be tough but IF the GOP can turn its back on the old style politics it can win.
Ohio is the ground zero. I can tell you the election will be won here or lost here. Im in a place where Kerry won barely. Its hyped for Obama.
I think Obama will lose. There are still too many doubts out there about him even if he is flying high now.
The McCain campaign has to however go after him. Obambi slides by when you let up on him. Thats his “Hope a dope” strategy to take punches but stay in the game hoping to outlast the fight. You go for the knockout against that kind of opponent not a judgement.
William Amos on September 4, 2008 at 11:48 PM
Eh. He did fine.
Sarahcuda is the attack dog, McCain comes out and strikes a higher tone.
What did you expect?
Citizen Duck on September 4, 2008 at 11:48 PM
Specifying isn’t his strong suit, but it was good. He at least gave the speech with all the passion within him, which is considerable.
Bob's Kid on September 4, 2008 at 11:48 PM
All Maverick had to do was give a solid speech and close out the convention without royally ‘effing up. Despite the best efforts of the Code Pink whackos to disrupt his acceptance speech, he succeeded.
Now it’s on to the debates.
Mike Honcho on September 4, 2008 at 11:49 PM
Thanks to AP, every day at Hot Air is blustery.
Esteemed host, you need to read — or re-read — Dennis Prager’s Happiness Is a Serious Problem, in which he proposes that it is our duty to the world to be happy optimists.
Terrie on September 4, 2008 at 11:49 PM
Because they’re an insult to people’s intelligence almost by definition. They’re always full of distortions and larded up with crap designed to appeal to niche constituencies I don’t care about. I could watch them as pure performance, I guess, but that would be even more cynical. Better to just skip them.
Allahpundit on September 4, 2008 at 11:49 PM
McCain did A-okay,a bit long tho!
canopfor on September 4, 2008 at 11:49 PM
I don’t want him working across the aisle. Bush did that with Kennedy and look where it got us, more spending, larger government and a demoralized party.
Tim Burton on September 4, 2008 at 11:49 PM
McCain’s content was awesome. Delivery was not, but I’m not voting on someone’s speech making abilities.
jediwebdude on September 4, 2008 at 11:50 PM
Like throwin out the last 1/2 of the beer for the night on a raging fire….a bit boring …But I gotta say he earned my vote with (Palin) hope for our party…..
Palin is (or can be) the future.
Doogiesd on September 4, 2008 at 11:50 PM
Let’s just say I liked the appetizer much more than the entree.
To be fair, I’d give McCain about a B minus (rounding up).
He’s never been a dynamic speaker in my view. I thought he was smart to leave out the red meat and try to reach across party lines. I’ll note that Obama opponents had the courtesy not to disrupt Obama’s speech although I certainly didn’t expect comparable behavior from McCain’s opponents. McCain certainly has my respect for the considerable service that he and his family have given to this country.
Bob L on September 4, 2008 at 11:50 PM
Yep, pretty much sums up the wacko left right here.
Hannibal Smith on September 4, 2008 at 11:50 PM
Someone needs to give Gov. Palin a sniper rifle, and let her take care of those protesters.

No offense Allah, I’m getting pretty friggin sick of you.
eski502 on September 4, 2008 at 11:51 PM
I was watching Bathtub Boy a minute ago. He was actually decent for a Libtard. Somewhat subdued even. I wonder if they slipped him something for his spas attacks. Like Lithium.
Guardian on September 4, 2008 at 11:51 PM
He might not have had the delivery that Obama has but he had something far more important: Authenticity. Honestly I think that’s where this will be won (or lost). Two other things really contrasted with Obama in my opinion. First he seemed to have much more depth. That’s not the perfect word to describe it but as an example, when he was talking about war you felt that he knew what he was talking about not just because he studied it or thought about it but because he was THERE.
Second, he seemed to honestly and sincerely love America and it was clear that when he said America was the greatest country in the world, he meant it. Obama doesn’t say anything like that but even when he’s praising America there’s always a begrudging element to it and a “but” after it.
Sure I’m a partisan who is very deep in the tank for McCain due to a bad case of Palinmania, but I really think this speech will play better with the voters of America than will Obama’s speech.
Kronos on September 4, 2008 at 11:52 PM
The “soup line America” bit about how everybody needs help from the feds to pay their mortgages definitely wasn’t aimed at conservatives. On domestic issues, a turn-off, mostly.

Kat_Mo on September 4, 2008 at 11:53 PM
McCain’s speech was a snooze. Too bad.
fed-nad on September 4, 2008 at 11:53 PM
Good effort from a guy not known for being a particularly good speaker. He kept the tone high, personal and sincere.
McCain beat the odds to win the nomination when just about everybody counted him out. It’s going to be a very tough two months, but we have the more qualified candidates and the better ideas, so I’m cautiously optimistic.
LagunaDave on September 4, 2008 at 11:53 PM
None of the speakers today were good other than McCain. He had his moments. Vouchers, his views on war, drill now even if it was only offshore not ANWR, and the end where he extolled the audience to “get up and fight!” was very good I thought.
I ended up thinking “Ok McCain, I will vote for you.”
Dash on September 4, 2008 at 11:53 PM
Where are you at in Ohio Amos?
In the suburbs they are pumped for McCain so far as I can tell. The urban areas are very overtly O’bama but considering tehy’ll go Nathaniel Jones on you if you post a McCain sign in city limits I dunno….
I am thinking Barry loses Ohio by 3 points unless Cleveland borrows Akron’s dead.
sven10077 on September 4, 2008 at 11:54 PM
Pretty much sums up my feelings toward him.
TheBigOldDog on September 4, 2008 at 11:54 PM

I know, but by tomorrow you’ll have done something great that’ll have me right back over.
Kind of like McCain I guess?
I just don’t think we can risk having pessimism from the right towards Palin right now. She’s an oppurtunity for us and we need to take the oppurtunity and run with it.
eski502 on September 4, 2008 at 11:55 PM
Andrew Sullivan proves the Nietzsche quote that: “Be careful when you fight the monsters, lest you become one.” His behavior in promoting those lies about the birth of Gov. Palin’s youngest child Trig without any evidence at all was disgraceful and dishonorable.
The behavior of these so called professional journalists, bloggers and pundits has been pathetic. Vetting Governor Palin, by all means. Do so. That will certainly continue to happen through the campaign, hopefully as we go forward ub a professional and fair manner. Vilifying her and her children as went on this weekend? The over the top assault by many in the MSM was obscene.
Call it karma or justice or providence, but I believe McCain and Palin will actually end up benefiting from it and it will detract from Barack Obama and Joe Biden. But that does not excuse it.
Mr. Joe on September 4, 2008 at 11:55 PM
That they are talking about Palin on fox already says it all.
Rove tried to put lipstick on the pig; but mccain is no palin. She’s the future. And I’m sad that she will be linked to him if he wins in 2008.

We are electiong McCain for his biography. And we are electing Palin for our future.
Both of those are good enough for me.
William Amos on September 4, 2008 at 11:56 PM
I watched it with my 11 year old boy (Mandatory from me, bad Dad), and I kept saying to him, “Buddy just remember that McCain isn’t the best public speaker, but listen to what he says”.
Over.
1GooDDaDDy on September 4, 2008 at 11:56 PM
I like McCain a lot, I even voted for him in the primary. But I didn’t like this speech, none of McCain’s speeches are that great but this was really awkward. I can’t believe he forgot to mention health care in a significant way. The green background came back to haunt us, and the crowd seemed to not get the applause lines correct. It ended well. I would probably give him C+.
Complete7 on September 4, 2008 at 11:56 PM
People, let me repeat this here to give you all a little context that may help you in reading AP:
Where are you from? I ask becuase here in the Northeast, pessimism and cynicism run deep. That are an integral part of the culture. I know a million people just like AP. It can be heard any day of the week on any talk radio program in Boston but most especially on Sports talk radio. Tune in to WEEI any time of the day and you’d be amazed that you are listening to people in a region where the teams have won 3 Super Bowls, 2 World Series and an NBA championship in the last 8 years. It just is what it is. You’d think people would be a little more optimistic living in liberal utopia, but maybe that’s exactly why they aren’t ;)
TheBigOldDog on September 4, 2008 at 11:57 PM
I respect that. I never would have guessed that, but I respect it
Pam on September 4, 2008 at 11:57 PM
Why?
Aren’t bloggers supposed to be informed?
jgapinoy on September 4, 2008 at 11:59 PM
It was rather choppy at first, then some meat, more choppy, and the end was electric. I just hope people could hear what he was saying through the applause.
I expect to see a 6 point bounce…pretty much putting us where we left off…1 or 2 points behind.
SouthernGent on September 4, 2008 at 11:59 PM
Allah, at least week can agree on the Jindal half of the ticket.
eski502 on September 4, 2008 at 11:59 PM
Allah likes to keep people rooted in reality. We ned that sometimes. He is not a payed cheerleader he is just a blogger with his own opinion.
Hey every cloud needs a silver lining and every day needs a crappy perpetual thundercloud that follows you around and rains on your parade.
William Amos on September 4, 2008 at 11:59 PM
Can someone explain to me why ‘Vets for Peace’ were protesting in the hall? I’m pretty sure we haven’t used horses in battle since 1918. Maybe it was because of the military K9 units? I don’t know why vets care so much, I would think it would be more business for them if the dogs were wounded and needed vet care.
Can.Utility on September 4, 2008 at 11:59 PM
The other thing you all have to realize is, he’s just gonna dig his heels in the more you yank the chain. Another common Northeastern trait.
TheBigOldDog on September 4, 2008 at 11:59 PM
I lived in the Northeast for many years, so I know the type.
Having said that, I’m of the mind that when you’re in a fight, you fight as hard as you can, as long as you can.
The time for licking your wounds and crying over your losses is when the fighting’s done.

At the very end Olberman reminded those watching that McCain gave an interview in US News & World Report after he came home and said that he did contemplate suicide and did sign some sort of statement (my ears exploded at that point so I missed the details).
Muted but still sick.
Mr_Magoo on September 5, 2008 at 12:01 AM
I think McCain painted a good contrast between him and Obama. Kinda hard not to do that I guess, all he did was tell us his life story. Now we have a choice to make.

I disagree Allah. It is always illuminating to see what lies a man tells himself about what he believes. I don’t see a lot of lies out of McCain and frankly I say that as an oftentime opponent as much as a partisan for him right now.
I see Barry lying to himself a lot about his level of control on a turbulent world.
Anyway YMMV,

thmcbb on September 5, 2008 at 12:03 AM
Well, it’s not that I don’t appreciate some pessimism. In fact, its good to read it once in awhile. Keeps you from resting on your laurels, so to speak.
So, if you believe we have any chance, you read Allah, get reminded that there is hard, hard work to do and then put your shoulder to the boulder and push.
Oddly, as it may seem, I think I have been convinced to volunteer for McCain/Palin campaign. Palin was great, but I do think that McCain actually sold me.
Stand up and fight! And I love a good fight!

sven10077 on September 5, 2008 at 12:04 AM
I thought it was a great speech. McCain certainly does not have the oratory grace of a teleprompted Obama, but he has a life experience that makes him the only real candidate for President in 2008.
Tonight I met John McCain, the man. I knew who he was before tonight, but I never knew what made him tick. We got a real glimpse of that this evening in the revealing part of his speech about being blessed by misfortune.
His transformation from a person who was all about John McCain, to a man that was all about his Country. His metamorphosis from a man that appreciated his Country, to a man that truly loved his Country and the decency of the United States.
It went a long way to help explain his position on immigration. While I do not hold those same views, I now understand that it is his desire to fuel his vision of decency that causes him to embrace that position.
Tonight I saw a giant of a decent man, who, by comparison, made his opponent look like small. The comparison one could not help to draw between Obama and McCain was a stark contrast. And next to John McCain, Barak Obama is a minute shell of a candidate. An empty suit spouting empty promises and empty visions of hope.
Every time Obama whines, we will be reminded of McCain enduring hardships that Obama will never fathom. A community organizer in love with himself, versus a humble servant in love with his Country.
Like I said, a great speech.
Jim M. on September 5, 2008 at 12:04 AM
I’m with you, but there’s a reason we lost the Northeast…We gave it to them. You know what I mean… Everybody here is so friggin’ pessimistic and cynical nothing ever gets fixed, nothing ever really changes until people are backed into a corner… I’ve been dealing with it my whole life. Hell I had to fight letting it happen to me. It’s deeply rooted in the culture.
TheBigOldDog on September 5, 2008 at 12:04 AM
Oh man, and blue is waaaay better than that god-awful green. Who’s idea was it to put a picture of a house with a lawn behind McCain!?
nickj116 on September 5, 2008 at 12:04 AM
Keep in mind that McCain’s in his element in more informal settings. He beat Obama down like a three dollar ho at Saddleback, and for my money we’ll see him to the same during whatever debates they can get Obambi to agree to.
As for Saracuda/Biden, hell I’m smilin’ just thinking about it.
Citizen Duck on September 5, 2008 at 12:05 AM
Last night’s speech was to conservatives (not Hillary voters as the MSM would have you believe).
Tonight’s speech was to Hillary voters (not conservatives as the MSM would have you believe).
I think it was a very effective 2-day package.

What they should have done:
Have Palin introduce him. After last night it would have been great. No offense to Cindy but she was dull.
eski502 on September 5, 2008 at 12:06 AM
I think it was a great jumping point. Yesterday fired up the base, and today was a call to action. Ie it continues the party (or conversation as Hillary would say). I thought it was very well done, and the end of Mac’s speech was almost as good as possible.
Spirit of 1776 on September 5, 2008 at 12:07 AM
For those who don’t know McCain’s biography
John McCain’s father gave him the courage to be a sailor. Five years as a POW gave him the courage to be a hero. The story of John McCain’s experience as a Vietnam War POW. Base on the memoir of the same title.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbvelW91E3c
McCain talks about signing the confession in his autobiography “Faith of My Faithers”. What is told by other POWs is that he then spent the next few weeks repenting for what he did and goading the guards into beating him more and more as a kind of repentance for what he perceived as a disgrace to his honor. If you haven’t read Faith of My Fathers, I recommend it:
