The plaintive wail from Team Obama

Ever since signing up for Barack Obama’s magic text message announcing his running mate — in the middle of the night — I’ve been plagued by e-mails on a daily basis.  It gives one a good look at the workings of the campaign and how they use events for fundraising, the real purpose of the gimmicky announcement mechanism.  Today, the campaign sent out an appeal based on the fact that Sarah Palin kicked Barack Obama’s rear end in her speech last night, after having it tenderized by Rudy Giuliani first.

Let’s step through a few of the passages from David Plouffe:

I wasn’t planning on sending you something tonight. But if you saw what I saw from the Republican convention, you know that it demands a response.

In other words, the Obama campaign will fall into the trap of having the top of its ticket get into a debate with the bottom of the GOP ticket.

I saw John McCain’s attack squad of negative, cynical politicians. They lied about Barack Obama and Joe Biden, and they attacked you for being a part of this campaign.

In other words … Mom!  Mom!  Sister hit me back!  After constantly referring to the governor as the “mayor of Wasilly“, Obama has no room to talk about negative and cynical.

Both Rudy Giuliani and Sarah Palin specifically mocked Barack’s experience as a community organizer on the South Side of Chicago more than two decades ago, where he worked with people who had lost jobs and been left behind when the local steel plants closed. …

Community organizing is how ordinary people respond to out-of-touch politicians and their failed policies.

Well, no, they mocked the notion that that experience somehow trumps being a mayor.  You see, mayors get held accountable for their policies and their ability to remain in touch.  Palin managed to do so well that she got re-elected, and then elected Governor.

By the way, which of the two has actually risked their career to reform the system to kick out-of-touch politicians out of the system?  Barack Obama played along with the Daley machine in Chicago.  Palin fought her own party to end corruption in Alaska.  Which one is the friend of out-of-touch politicians?

It’s now clear that John McCain’s campaign has decided that desperate lies and personal attacks — on Barack Obama and on you — are the only way they can earn a third term for the Bush policies that McCain has supported more than 90 percent of the time.

You know, it’s funny, but nowhere in this e-mail does Plouffe (or his flunky who wrote this, more likely) ever actually identify a single lie in either speech last night.  They complain about Giuliani and Palin making fun of Obama, which they certainly did, but never do they refute one factual statement they made.  Plouffe et al just like calling Palin a liar — while their allies keep spinning myths about her political affiliation, the maternity of her last child, her marital fidelity, and her ability to manage her family.

Mom!  Mom!  Sister hit me back … and she hits too hard for a girl!

Update: Andrew Malcolm has a good post on the Palin speech, and the entire text of it.  See if you can find any lies.  The only thing I find is a pretty good diagnosis of Obamamania.

Community Organizers = Community Politburos!

USMCDevilDog on September 4, 2008 at 9:28 AM

Pundits are saying “Sarah hit a home run last night, but it is only the first inning.” Yep, that’s right folks. However, when it comes to Obama-Biden, and the “do nothing Democrat controlled Congress”, the remaining innings will be filled with more of the same, The treasure grove of meaningless words and broken promises is endless.

Damn, this is going to be fun to watch.

Keemo on September 4, 2008 at 9:29 AM

“Community organizer” is a role described by Obama (and Hillary) idol Saul Alinsky, who described how an outside organizer could enter a community, listen closely to discover the real or imagined community grievences, and then, after recruiting the local power brokers (including the church), build a local power base and subsequently leverage that to ultimately consolidate all power. That’s the Alinsky “system”. Obama has spent his adult life following the playbook nearly perfectly.

Dave, how do you and alphie spend your time now that his mother’s poodle ran away?

I heard a veteran hyping yesterday that McCain SAID that he was going to re-institute the draft and start a war against Iran. I let the vet’s first statement go. But as no one rebutted him, he went on and on. To which I told him, “That’s not what McCain said.” When he turned to look at his opponent, he stopped short. It doesn’t take a bully or a pit bull to just say no to a lie being spread in public.

I enjoy pointing out to these Democrats that it was one of their own (Rangel) who has been trying to reinstate the draft. It’s fun to watch them sputter in confusion.

Sorry, I didn’t explain that well. It has nothing to do with actually improving anything for the “community”, it’s just a technique for using the assembled (and amplified) grievances as a weapon to to bargain for power. Improvements would actually be unwelcome, since they would diminish the grievance level and thus diminish the implicit threat of violence that is used as leverage.

ZOMG!!! I just like totally checked out Lindsay Lohan’s political blog on MySpace!!!

I am concerned with the fact that Sarah Palin brought the attention to her daughter’s pregnancy, rather than all world issues and what she believes she could possibly do to change them-if elected. I get Sarah Palin’s views against abortion, but i would much prefer to hear more about what she can do for our country rather than how her daughter is going to have a child no matter what.

Maybe focus on delivering some words and policy with stronger impact like Joe Biden.

OMG she is like so totally smart.

Charitable organizations such as United Way, the Shriners, and local food banks, are hardly comparable to political organizations such as ACORN — the type of corrupt “community organizing” group with which Obama has been associated.

The fact that you can’t seem to discern the difference speaks volumes.

That’s the Alinsky “system”. Obama has spent his adult life following the playbook nearly perfectly.

bofh on September 4, 2008 at 9:13 AM

So let me get this straight…”Community Organizing” is a methodology developed by an extreme leftist socialist/communist (Alinsky) designed enable an individual to consolidate political power for political power consolidation’s own sake? The underlying idea appears to be to benefit the community by helping them solve problems, but driven by the ulterior motive of lust for power and personal aggrandizement as opposed to helping and benefiting people in the community purely for the sake of helping other human beings without expecting any kind of reward other than the satisfaction of having helped others?

What you’ve described is not helping other human beings just to help them, but rather, helping other human beings so they’ll owe you something and you become their master.

The indicators of self-aggrandizement, ego-pumping, lust for power over others (i.e., control), are bad enough.

So is the “icky-ness” of such an impure motive for helping others…so you’ll become the “big man” in exchange.

But what’s worse is…to me, it seems to be a manner of collectivizing people and “helping them” so you eventually lead (read “control”) them. And I can’t help wondering if this is a process for becoming a master over those you’ve “enslaved” because they’re obligated to help you become that “big man” because you’ve helped them?

It’s about as non-altruistic as it gets.

Shirotayama on September 4, 2008 at 9:41 AM

Now you yahoos are claiming that in a country of 300 million people there are only a few thousand community organizers.

Akzed on September 4, 2008 at 9:42 AM

The tone of that text message says it all. It’s all about appealing to these kids personally, with guilt and competition and in-fighting. My 21 year old daughter says that her fellow students (Obama fans, of course)are obsessed with who has the most volunteer hours and who gets the first post on Obama’s website for the day and, of course, who can give the most out of their weekly “income”. They assign people to do nothing but try to pick fights in sites like these. They never talk about the issues, as a matter of fact, that’s the surefire way to shut them up, she says…just ask them any question that’s slightly off the daily talking points.

Dave Rywall on September 4, 2008 at 9:31 AM

Real Americans don’t need a “community organizer” to tell them how to help their communities. Real Americans just step up to the plate and do it. Real Americans help out directly. Real Americans don’t need multiple layers of extortion of tax dollars to validate their helping out. Real Americans don’t suck up other peoples money to fund their “charity” work. And real Americans don’t care who gets credit so long as the job gets done.

The history of “community organizers” in America, especially in the Chicago area, demonstrates clearly over decades, that their “work” is nothing more than a means to control, indoctrinate, and exploit those they claim to be helping. Extortion is not beyond their playbook, either. Give us money or we’ll boycott your restraurant…give us money or we will boycott your business…pretty standard stuff in the neighborhoods Obama and Jackson and Sharpton “organized.”

Grow a pair…then learn to read…then learn to think outside the leftist talking points you so frequently parrot.

Joe Biden appeared on Today this morning but wouldn’t say how he planned to respond (because, though a seasoned pol, nobody scripted his lines yet) to The Palinator. All he could do was comment about what he didn’t hear last night.

Memo to Joe: In a half hour speech there’s only so much you can do, as if she takes on all subjects, then you say she was light on substance. Dude, based on what I saw, you better be careful what you wish for.

Exactly. Anyone who is interested in what a “community organizer” does should read Saul Alinsky, who pretty much defines the term for our times with his “Rules for Radicals” and other writings. Obama, by his own admission, was a follower of Alinsky.

Even in the midst of all this glowing praise, which I share, — even now I believe the vote of the moderate-to-conservative American woman is being underestimated.
In national politics, we seldom have had opportunity to vote for a woman who is leading as a woman, not leading as a woman-making-good-in-a-man’s-world, which is actually what the feminists would have us do.
How refreshing, how delightful, how inspiring to see Sarah Palin be all woman, and all leader. I predict a groundswell of support for her especially from apolitical women who otherwise wouldn’t vote. She is a leader American women have been longing to see.
She is articulating a life of empowered womanhood separate from feminist ideology, which some of us who grew up in the 70’s and 80’s were unequivocally taught does not exist.

Dave Rywall on September 4, 2008 at 9:31 AM

Dave, nobody’s belittling the work of a community organizer. This may be hard for you but you need to try to remember the context. Here, Gov. Palin was responding to charges that her work as a mayor of a town of 10,000 people (the type of community in which many swing voters live and more can relate to) was insignificant. Her point was that being a small town mayor is much more significant as a POTUS qualification than anything Barry O has accomplished, because her mayor gig entailed considerably more responsibilities. It picked up on Mayor Guliani’s point that during his term in the Illinois statehouse, Barry O repeatedly refused to make a decision on legislation, voting “present” over 100 times. (There’s been no suggestion that he was just confused, assuming they were simply taking attendance!) As Mayor, neither Rudi nor Sarah enjoyed such an out and it’s not conceivable that either might have taken it if it had been available. There’s that pesky character thing again.

So, if Gov. Palin had to assume the presiidency for any reason, temporary or permanent, her life’s work to date is far more impressive than anything Obama can point to, except the less prepared Obama is at the top of the ticket, acting like he’s ready to do the job on day 1.

We don’t need a draft. I saw personally what draftees can and cannot do. The present system of volunteer professionals will suit us just fine.

coldwarrior on September 4, 2008 at 9:55 AM
I am not saying we need a draft. I myself volunteered for the Marine Corps back in 1979, a few years after the draft was discontinued. What I am stating though, it takes Congress to reinstate the draft. POTUS can ask for conscription, BUT, Congress must agree to it.. I for one am for a all Volunteer Military. Semper Fi

Millions? Whew, that’s a lot! How do you know it’s that many? Are they all in Chicago? I get Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses coming to my door, but a Community Organizer has never knocked. Am I being discriminated against?

Well you got your talking point this morning I see. Since you have no idea what the term “community organizer,” as used by Obama really means, I suggest you go to this link. I mean, you did know there are several kinds of community organizers, didn’t you? You being so smart and all.

They’re pushing it hard. Claiming that “McSame” is now just like Bush.

So are they going to get away with it? Or is somebody going to call them on it?

Professor Blather on September 4, 2008 at 8:15 AM

Professor, the counter to McCain=Bush began when Palin was picked as VP. Any other pick would have reinforced the “same-old-same-old”.

The counter will ramp up tonight and will continue at various levels of intensity for the duration of the campaign.

Done well, done forcefully, convincingly, it can and will affect many independents and democrats because dislike and hatred for Bush is the foundation of Obama’s campaign and popularity.

The good thing is that we know his foundation is built upon sand. And when it starts shifting, it could lead to a landslide in November.

That message looked like it was straight out of the Kremlin or Pravda in the bad old days…

I’m surprised they didn’t just cut to the chase; it would probably look something like this:

“The evil capatalists have once agained lied shamelessly and pressed further their relentless assault on the honest proletariat

By sharing your resources with your fearless leader you will be doing your part to ensure a glorious people’s victory in the days ahead…

Comrade Obama and Minister Biden”

RocketmanBob on September 4, 2008 at 10:41 AM

Why all the talk about the speech being written by someone other than Sarah Palin by the pundits? It got so bad that I remember Brit Hume on FOX and Anderson Cooper on CNN actually pointing it out to their panels. I don’t remember anyone ever mentioning that Obamas speech was written by someone else. (And we know the difference between BO reading a speech and actually speaking on his own.)

millions of good Americans who do community organizing might be insulted by your elitist pat on their heads –

Dave Rywall on September 4, 2008 at 8:56 AM

Thanks for living down to my expectations, Dave, and you too, Tom. There is nothing so immediately gratifying (politically speaking) for me than liberal Democrat guys crying foul after a conservative woman criticizes them or calls them sissies. Instant validation.

Others have already corrected your misinterpretation of the “community organizer” crap, but once more: this is a term right out of the communist playbook, and attempts to broaden the concept by suggesting it’s the same as the PTA will sound funny to normal people. And claiming that there are “millions” of people who call themselves community organizers is simply stupid, Dave. There aren’t.

I suggest that something over 95% of the voters in this country have never met anyone that they would identify as a “community organizer”, but good luck selling that. The larger point is that it doesn’t serve as a qualification to be the President of the United States, but is much more fitting as a term of derision.

Community organizing is how ordinary people respond to out-of-touch politicians and their failed policies.

In Chicago? Who would the “out-of-touch politicians” be in Chicago – certainly not Republicans (thee aren’t any). Is this a slam on Mayor Daley? (who was already in office when Obama was a “community organizer”.

“Wasilly” is beneath contemptible in terms of slanderous attacks. Has there been a call for an apology to all of its citizens?

Ha. Of course there hasn’t. It’ll be neat to see if Obama can break out of the single digits in votes from Wasilla come November, though.

flutejpl on September 4, 2008 at 9:44 AM

Yup. This coming from the most “clean” and “articulate” community organizer to every run for public office

- Community Organizer= poor lobbyist
- In his years as a community organizer, Obama lobbied against the government on behalf of citizens to get funds for Tony Rezco and his ilk to build housing projects that no one has maintained since the ’80s vs. as mayor, Sarah Palin worked in government to ensure citizen kept more of their own money
- Community Organizers are paid by lobbyists vs. Mayors and City Council people are paid by the people they represent
- Community Organizers are selected by lobbyists to represent their interests vs. Mayors and City Council people are ELECTED by their citizens to represent their communities.

Another “clean” & “articulate” statement brought to you by the those who are embarrassed that American’s can only say “Merci Beaucoup” when in France.

Yes, indeed the same people who were openly praised for using the proper regional dialectic to pronounce the names terrorist promoting counties are clearly more interested in insulting small, US cities and their mayors.

Damiano on September 4, 2008 at 11:23 AM

Community organizing is how ordinary people respond to out-of-touch politicians and their failed policies.

Heh.

Community organizer in Chicago = Harvard educated lawyer who doesn’t like the work of lawyering, and opts for the easy manipulation of people at the lowest end of the economic and education scale, toward the goal of a life of political power, working alongside (or in charge of) the very politicians who keep those people at the lowest end of the economic and education scale.

i.e., “farce”

Jaibones on September 4, 2008 at 11:59 AM

Community organizing is how ordinary people respond to out-of-touch politicians and their failed policies.

This is lifted directly [verbatum] from a David Plouffe [Obama Campaign] email sent out last night to the Obama faithful.

(I got that same email in my “junk mail” box around midnight last night.)

Can we call the a talking point from the top?
