The plaintive wail from Team Obama

Ever since signing up for Barack Obama’s magic text message announcing his running mate — in the middle of the night — I’ve been plagued by e-mails on a daily basis.  It gives one a good look at the workings of the campaign and how they use events for fundraising, the real purpose of the gimmicky announcement mechanism.  Today, the campaign sent out an appeal based on the fact that Sarah Palin kicked Barack Obama’s rear end in her speech last night, after having it tenderized by Rudy Giuliani first.

Let’s step through a few of the passages from David Plouffe:

I wasn’t planning on sending you something tonight. But if you saw what I saw from the Republican convention, you know that it demands a response.

In other words, the Obama campaign will fall into the trap of having the top of its ticket get into a debate with the bottom of the GOP ticket.

I saw John McCain’s attack squad of negative, cynical politicians. They lied about Barack Obama and Joe Biden, and they attacked you for being a part of this campaign.

In other words … Mom!  Mom!  Sister hit me back!  After constantly referring to the governor as the “mayor of Wasilly“, Obama has no room to talk about negative and cynical.

Both Rudy Giuliani and Sarah Palin specifically mocked Barack’s experience as a community organizer on the South Side of Chicago more than two decades ago, where he worked with people who had lost jobs and been left behind when the local steel plants closed. …

Community organizing is how ordinary people respond to out-of-touch politicians and their failed policies.

Well, no, they mocked the notion that that experience somehow trumps being a mayor.  You see, mayors get held accountable for their policies and their ability to remain in touch.  Palin managed to do so well that she got re-elected, and then elected Governor.

By the way, which of the two has actually risked their career to reform the system to kick out-of-touch politicians out of the system?  Barack Obama played along with the Daley machine in Chicago.  Palin fought her own party to end corruption in Alaska.  Which one is the friend of out-of-touch politicians?

It’s now clear that John McCain’s campaign has decided that desperate lies and personal attacks — on Barack Obama and on you — are the only way they can earn a third term for the Bush policies that McCain has supported more than 90 percent of the time.

You know, it’s funny, but nowhere in this e-mail does Plouffe (or his flunky who wrote this, more likely) ever actually identify a single lie in either speech last night.  They complain about Giuliani and Palin making fun of Obama, which they certainly did, but never do they refute one factual statement they made.  Plouffe et al just like calling Palin a liar — while their allies keep spinning myths about her political affiliation, the maternity of her last child, her marital fidelity, and her ability to manage her family.

Mom!  Mom!  Sister hit me back … and she hits too hard for a girl!

Update: Andrew Malcolm has a good post on the Palin speech, and the entire text of it.  See if you can find any lies.  The only thing I find is a pretty good diagnosis of Obamamania.

They are in full-blown panic mode. The smears were completely neutralized by the speech and they don’t know what to do now. The desperation is palpable, the sweat very visible.

Delicious.

One reason Mrs. Palin called out Obama bin Biden like that is she (and the McCain campaign) know that the Chicago thug machine is behind all these smears on the Palins. It was the ultimate shot across the bow. SHE.AIN’T.SCARED.

SouthernGent on September 4, 2008 at 8:15 AM

It’s obvious that the Obama slugs are desperate. If there was a lie then they need to tell us precisely why it was a lie. The truth remains intact and it is that Obama is an unqualified, been nowhere, done nothing, loud fool. He and his cult are feeling the pressure of stark reality and it’s becoming too much for them to bear.

Question for you: do you think that meme I just quoted is going to work for them?

They’re pushing it hard. Claiming that “McSame” is now just like Bush.

And yet for YEARS, we listened to liberals point to McCain as being DIFFERENT. He was always the “maverick,” the one Republican that broke with his party. The one they kinda liked. Many of their candidates, including Biden, noted that explicitly … back when it appeared that he had no shot at actually getting the nomination.

So are they going to get away with it? Or is somebody going to call them on it?

Her speech was the perfect presentation… strong, resolute, knowledgeable, but not rabidly bitchy. It was truly exactly what I expected. I could be wrong (and it has happened before), but I think she’ll eat Biden’s lunch in the debate… she may even drink his milkshake: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDVzmbtVZ6s

Obama’s “community organizer” phase was about political power, not soup kitchens

BTW, Obama went to columbia(no transcript), became a community organizer, then went to Harvard law(summa cum laude). Check this out about the transition from community organizer to Harvard Law…

Joe is not stupid. Joe is thinking about Joe.

He’s definitely trying to be halfway decent, for three reasons:

1) He’s probably a halfway decent guy;
2) He knows its going to make him look better when he eventually faces Palin at a debate; and
3) Obama may rot like moldy cheese … but good ol’ Joe has set himself up nicely for another run in 4 or 8 years. Being nasty to Palin is bad long-term strategy for his personal ambitions.

This totally pisses me off. Obama is running a TV ad that is so full of lies about John McCain it reeks.

rockmom on September 4, 2008 at 8:20 AM

It sounded to me like Palin was goading Obama, trying to get him to square off against her, siphoning off some of the attacks otherwise aimed at McCain.

It would be a good strategy for a number of reasons. In the land of identity politics it would pit the female candidate, rather than the old white candidate, against the black candidate. That in itself is a game-changer for the campaign.

It seems to me Palin went directly for the throat, without any interest in wasting time with the hired help, such as Joe Biden. Him she can handle in her spare time.

No wonder Baracky felt like a caribou being hunted down since Palin was announced last week; she took a bead and dropped him with one well-placed shot.

There will be a full frontal human wave assault against Palin today, no doubt. The media freaks are over their initial shock that she didn’t flounce up on stage, show a little cleavage and giggle like Marilyn Monroe.

They also won’t care about casualties; “Palin Slept With Conoco Executives” will be the headline, or some such tripe.

Bishop on September 4, 2008 at 8:20 AM

She has to prove her mettle on the harsh campaign trail. But while pundits before the speech were pondering how the McCain campaign could put lipstick on this (seemingly) pig of a choice, after the speech was over, it was clear, for at least the moment, that with Palin there’s more lipstick than pig.

That is from Mother Jones this AM.

PaKeystoner on September 4, 2008 at 8:26 AM

Consider this-

Barrack Hussein Obama from day one (going back to his introduction at the 2004 DNC convention) was treated with mushy adoring kid-gloves labeling him as “a rising star” and “a rock star” and he has been surrounded- NO- SUSTAINED by the lock-step adoring media. He has had nothing but a friendly “loaded” audience.

UNTIL, that is- The SaddleBack Church forum. And how did he do? He SUCKED royally. He was indecisive, scatter-brained, lacking in conviction, void of any core principles, wishy-washy, and suffering greatly from “analysis paralysis”.

ON THE OTHER HAND-

Gov Sarah Palin took to the podium in front of a friendly crowd, but in the crushing midst of a BRUTALLY VICIOUS ATTACK-DOG MEDIA, hell-bent on destroying her personally as much as professionally. And even stooping so low as to use her pregnant daughter and special-needs infant son to ridicule and demean her (not only as a woman) but even worse- as a mother.

And Palin’s response?

A strong, DEFIANT, line-drawn-in-the-sand, go-for-the-throat-with-a-smile, counter attack, delivered with something that mere words on a script can’t provide; CONVICTION, SINCERITY, AND A HUGE DOSE OF CHARM.

Note to camp Obama: BE AFRAID. BE VERY AFRAID.
Belittle her at your own peril.

The Huntress is on the loose, and she’s tracking her prey……

Bishop on September 4, 2008 at 8:27 AM

Watched the speech this morning, and it more than lived up to the rave reviews I read here and elsewhere. At times I was tearing up (shots of the kids, Vets), and other times I was physically wincing at the blows she landed on Obama.

This was her big chance to state her case without any interference or filtering by the media, and she hit one out of the park. Or, as we say in Britain: “Back of the net!”

The MSM can analyse the speech until they disappear up their own ***holes, but the public won’t be listening. They will, however remember this speech for a long time.

And FWIW, Palin is more of a man than Obama and Andrew Sullivan combined.

EnglishMike on September 4, 2008 at 8:28 AM

Semi-OT but relating to last night.

Anyways, here’s something I said in a post last week.

Perhaps the GOP are saying that AGW is on the platform because if it wasn’t, do you honestly believe the average American would believe the GOP when they say they want alternative fuels? They would say “oh, they’re just in big oil’s pocket”. Also, “belief” in AGW is the only way they’ll be able to convince the people in having more nuclear power plants built.

Considering the lack of talk on AGW and the numerous talk on nuclear power plants, perhaps I was indeed right ;)

There’s really no point, sad to say it. That won’t win over the independents.

Best thing to do is to just keep inserting the word Maverick into speeches and statements and let the “branding” work.

Answering directly draws McCain into their game – the goal here is to draw Obama into McCain’s game – and I think Palins’ shots should draw some fire.

Once that happens, all it’ll take is one “get over it” or “sweetie” moment – just let the mask slip a little – and Barry’s done.

Because the thing about women is – there are *more* of ‘em. And they’re smarter.

But YOUR response is telling. A regressive, school yard taunt in which logic cannot refute. The “whaaaaaaa” line of attack, which the right is so fond is just childish. It gives a glimpse into the psyche that will no matter what, attack their opponent. And when all else fails, call them a pussy.

Real serious thinkers.

Ahh, so you mock community organizing, but then you back pedal and claim you ONLY meant to mock the idea of comparing community organizing to being a mayor (of a tiny tiny town, the election of which she won with only 600 votes?)

Typical.

Dave Rywall on September 4, 2008 at 8:47 AM

You all mocked community organizing for months before any of you yahoos knew who Sarah Palin was.

Dave Rywall on September 4, 2008 at 8:48 AM

And FWIW, Palin is more of a man than Obama and Andrew Sullivan combined.

EnglishMike on September 4, 2008 at 8:28 AM

That’s gonna be some billable therapy hours. . .

Thanks for that, you bastard! Heh.

Wind Rider on September 4, 2008 at 8:48 AM

On the speech, I didn’t watch it, but it seems she did a good job with the speech she was given. The base liked it. We’ll see how it all plays out in the general election.

Tom_Shipley on September 4, 2008 at 8:42 AM

I despise Obama, but I’ve listened to plenty of his speeches. You had no idea what Palin would say, or what she was like, and you chose not to watch, because you don’t form your own opinions.

JiangxiDad on September 4, 2008 at 8:48 AM

I just wish I could watch Palin debate Obama directly.

Would just love to see him doing his usual great job of saying “uhhhh…uhhhh….uhhhh” when he talks.

Any one of those Nixonian pauses would likely be JUST enough hangtime for her to dive for the jugular and finish him off.

Shirotayama on September 4, 2008 at 8:48 AM

One thing I’m struck by is your response to Team Obama’s response. The community organizer line was a low blow. Obama responded.

And THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is the sound of the Palinator landing a HEAVY HEAVY BLOW to the pretty wittle face- of the Choosen One!

FiveWays on September 4, 2008 at 8:50 AM

Palins speech was better than Obamas. Period.

roninacreage on September 4, 2008 at 8:50 AM

AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!

Let me take a moment to break out my violin while I shed a tear and play a sad sad dirge that would amke even the angels weep!

Poor little B.O.!!! His campaign sounds so upset!!!!

Is the big bad lady from Alaska stealing your thunder and raining on your parade?

Boo Hoo!

Welcome to the REAL world of Presidential Campaigns, baby!

Hey, that’s almost as tiny as Iran!

fogw on September 4, 2008 at 8:50 AM

Sorry, but your Styrofoam Caesar started the ball rolling long before Palin’s speech; as was mentioned in the article: “Wasilly”.

Obama can’t take it and never could, it’s why he wants to have a guy who made an unflattering anti-Obama ad prosecuted.

You miss the point. She used it to compare experience – which Obama invited. She won. And she did it with a funny line.

If you want to criticize the speech, maybe you should watch it.

Who is backpedaling? “Community organizer” is a euphemism for rabble-rousing acolyte of ACORN. We know it and so do they. And so do you. If this is the best you got, gypsum board, this is going to be a tough week for you.

ManlyRash on September 4, 2008 at 8:51 AM

I don’t remember much of Obama or Biden’s speeches, but I don’t recall them being all sweetness and light.

Seems the liberals are as usual, falling back on their faithfull double standard.

Mcguyver on September 4, 2008 at 8:51 AM

Hey- let’s buy some votes this election.

Ahem! I meant to say:

HEY! let’s “community organize” some votes this November.

There! Fixed it my damn self.

whew*!

What is best in life?

To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of the women!

So…apparently to liberals, SIZE MATTERS?

Or, is it what she DID with that experience of running that tiny, tiny town that counts?

Lucy, please ’splain something to me: Just what the HECK DOES a “community organizer” actually do? Even better, how on earth does it actually contribute anything of actual VALUE to society???

Shirotayama on September 4, 2008 at 8:53 AM

The hitting on the Community Organizer thing was peanuts compared to pointing out that Barack fell in line with the Chicago Political Machine – but of course the Obama team doesn’t want to harp on that.

What do Community Organizers really do? From what the guy on CNN was complaining about – it sounded like they do what I’m expected to do for myself (get my electricity turned back on if the power company shuts if off, find other housing because of foreclosure – these were examples from the whiny guy on CNN last night). Is it a government position?

Were there community organizers in Wasilla? I don’t recall seeing any around here.

Drywall’s just bothered that if they keep pushing we’re gonna educate America on precisely what it is Barack did that he thinks trumps being a mayor of a town the size of a good part of american towns….

“community organizer” is “pro sh!t stirrer” and sorry but they almost always swing Donk….

He’ll get back to you shortly. He has to ask his community organizer. The CO office doesn’t open till 10:00.
