Survey USA: Independents who think Palin’s an asset to the campaign jump 13 points overnight

Via RCP. Not optimistic enough for you? Then eyeball the data, comparing questions three through six, and note well: The spread on whether the respective VP picks are both an asset to the ticket and reflect well on the nominee is wider for her than it is for Biden, not only across all voters but among women specifically. How long, I wonder, before the media starts circulating an Eagleton meme about him?

Answer: Very long indeed, per question eight. If ever you wanted evidence of just how “reality-based” the nutroots are, compare their own oft-screeched suspicions about the right-wing media that’s in the supposedly tank for McCain with the results there. Even among independents, the spread between Obama and “fair to both sides” exceeds 20 points.

I can’t leave you on a note that upbeat, so read this and have all your happy illusions about the Barracuda shattered. Or read Mike Murphy, eschewing the Peggy Noonan route and refusing to apologize for getting caught naysaying Palin on MSNBC’s open mike. Quote: “With all her charm, she is still a pick aimed squarely at the Republican base. In a high turnout Presidential year, I am not worried about turning out the base. I’m worried about everybody else we need to win and I fear that among those voters, Sarah Palin will be a dud.”

Everyone, regardless of what polls say, this is not a time to sit back and rest. No one, and I mean no one, can rely on polls until AFTER the VP debates. Why? Because it’ll have the first time when McCain/Obama fought and when Palin/Biden fought. After that, October 4th, we’ll see.

I guess the Left’s fascination with Gov. Palin’s college transcripts stems from the fact that their presidential candidate’s foreign policy credentials are based on a class he took in college.

I think that the fact that Mr. Murphy is the “Republican” on MSNBC, says just about all you need to know about him. Exactly what part of being a Republican do these people embrace? They all look like Democrats to me.

Doubtless someone has already mentioned this in the last week or so, but there’s an old political cartoon from 1900 of a Smurf-like William McKinley sitting on the shoulder of a gigantic Teddy Roosevelt, whom he had just chosen as his running mate. It was in my high school history textbook. I don’t suppose anyone has seen this cartoon on the net anywhere?

I’m totally envisioning a new version of this, and it’s not hard to guess who the Smurf would be :)

Patrick S on September 4, 2008 at 8:48 PM

We have all been starving for a conservative somewhere to stand up and turn on a light! Finally, one did!
What is so great about Palin, is that she has reminded us, that one does not have to have a Harvard degree, one does not have to be accepted and anointed by the mainstream media, one does not have to come from New York or Boston or be from the right family to shake things up. Palin is proof that in America ordinary people can shape a nation. She is just a mom who started down this road because she cared about her kids education. She wasn’t satisfied with leaving everything up to the experts. She took her parental responsibility seriously.
The threat she poses to the liberal elites goes beyond this election. The threat is also about the example she sets that others may be inspired to follow.
Like little Dorothy pulling the curtain away to reveal the inept man behind the image of the mighty Wizard, she has stripped liberal elites naked for all to see.
Mighty liberal walls and fortifications crumbled last night. They crumbled not by some mighty army, but, by a mother. Just a mother who cared enough about her kids education to get involved, to show up and to speak out.
.

Baphomet on September 4, 2008 at 8:50 PM

I went over to Ben Smith’s website and saw the reference to the email from some lady in Alaska who says Palin wanted to ban books or something. He said something about it being verified.

Let me tell you something, I live about a mile in the country from a small town and all kinds of things go on. We maybe little, but we are not idle. There are camps, there vile accusations of all sorts of perfidy thrown around about the other guy. We just had a meltdown here over the addition to the Court House that went way over budget and was totally screwed up. People were pissed.

So, I take an email like that with a grain of salt. In fact, I did not bother to go read the whole thing. I will wait for the movie.

For he today that votes with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition;
And gentlemen in America now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs’d they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That voted with us upon Election day.

ManlyRash on September 4, 2008 at 8:52 PM

And the problem with atttending 5 colleges in 6 years? She was changing majors, she needed more money to attend the private school and went with a cheaper state school? She graduated from a 2 year school and then transferred to a 4 year school? She graduated period!!!!!! Where’s the scandal?
The dems are so desperate that they are trying to scrape the bottom of the barrel and the underside too. Hey, 80% of college students drop out of college after the first year! I’d say that she’s in the top 20% if that’s the case. Besides, she probably got a real education instead of the communist brainwashing she would have gotten at Havard, Yale, etc…….

With all her charm, she is still a pick aimed squarely at the Republican base. In a high turnout Presidential year, I am not worried about turning out the base. I’m worried about everybody else we need to win and I fear that among those voters, Sarah Palin will be a dud.

1. We have been hearing for months about the “enthusiasm gap.” But he was not worried about turning out the base?

2. His fears are contradicted by the MediaCurves and SurveyUSA data so far — not to mention the example of 1988 demonstrating that the MSM can successfully smear a GOP VP pick and go on to win.

3. How pissed is Mike Murphy that he was kept out of the McCain Campaign and the Rovians on the inside are running the Maverick theme without turning to the RINOs? (hint: A lot.)

Loxodonta on September 4, 2008 at 8:54 PM

I am happy with the over 65 vote strongly in favor of Palin and McCain in the poll. These are people who actually go to the polls rather than the 18-34 who are ‘community organizers’ who usually sit at home on election day. Also pleased that most think McCain will win the election. Psychologically this is an important barrier to break and McCain has only one reason for this Sarah Connor Barracuda Palin. And the RINO claiming McCain only rallied the base with this pick, but the base represents values shared by 60 percent of Americans. If that base is rallied McCain will sweep the election. Not bad. And Murphy is pretty much washed up, except as a brown noser for the dying breed of Rockefeller Repubs in the N.E. He and Noonan are not likely to be welcomed in the McCain Administration.

fiatboomer on September 4, 2008 at 8:56 PM

And the people who were wrong about Palin will not admit it. Paul over at Power Line finally admitted Palin did well, but he added that if McCain does not win then we will know she was not up to it {or something} which implies that if McCain had picked Pawlenty he would have won…like he could know that.

I am about 90% POSITIVE she is going to club him like a harp seal, strangle him with his hair plugs, dress him like a moose on his own podium then suck the aneurysms out of his tiny brain.

But, I have the equivalent of Obama’s experience in anything apart from memorizing Rev. Wright speeches (or, in the immortal words of Giuliani- “ZERO”) faith in the public majority’s ability to determine fact from fiction or vote against someone who promises free stuff.

So, as has been stated Semper Fi! Let get to work!

So, what is everyone else doing? Being short on spare resources at the moment, I intend to expose as much of the nonsense as I can to anyone who will listen and endlessly harass the media until they resign.

Who has got more ideas?

Damiano on September 4, 2008 at 9:00 PM

boomer,

No, but O’Reilly had a hard time getting him to swallow the bitter pill that the surge was a success. He kind of told The Done that if we had done it HIS way, we wouldn’t have the success of the surge.

I’m still p.o.’s O’Reilly had him on, tonight. He should have shown it all next week.

On the survey, I’m surprised at how close the results were for whites and hispanics.

Star20 on September 4, 2008 at 9:00 PM

Murphy sounds like a d-bag. McCain didn’t have to worry about his BASE? Is the guy nuts?!?!? I don’t think much of the base would’ve come out…voting against the Marxist just isn’t enough for some; not only that, but donations, the GOTV drive, all that stuff would’ve been diminished.

And I’m sick of these jerks saying McCain needed someone more “moderate”. Why? McCAIN is a freakin moderate!! They never say that about the Dem ticket, either….anyone recall Lefties criticizing Obama because Biden was too liberal?

Was Murphy the one replaced by the McCain campaign?

If what nasty donk political gadfly says is true, Palin wouldn’t have been re-elected mayor, then elected governor, and have a 86% approval record. I also would like to point out her cheap shot at the fact that Palin and her husband chose to keep her pregnancy secret for a long time. It’s perfectly understandable not to announce it until she was showing.

Disturb the Universe on September 4, 2008 at 9:17 PM

Governor Palin has certainly galvanized the base. And the enthusiasm for Palin is an essential ingredient for a McCain/Palin victory on November 4. As of tomorrow, there are only 60 days left. Every hour of every day is precious. And so is every vote.

To the extent you can, in your words and deeds, do not slam the door in the face of those who have doubts or disagreements on one or even a few issues, but may yet be persuaded to join the McCain/Palin cause. Try to avoid turning potential grudging allies into certain enemies.

Loxodonta on September 4, 2008 at 9:18 PM

I read that whole email. After a year+ of guerrilla tactics in the comments sections of most major news papers websites I have become pretty adept at spotting the fakers and number stretchers. I would bet this woman is very liberal and very much a tree hugger. Also from the opening lines about Sarah’s looks likely someone who is not very attractive and quite jealous of Sarah.

Ok I typed that above portion before googling her and turns out I appear to be right on those assumptions.

Having Independents see Palin as an asset by 56-27% means that Palin is probably reaching beyond “the base”.

I’d love to know who was the magical independent-getting, excitement-generating, no-Democrats will hate-on VP selection that Murphy imagined?
Does he really think there was someone Code Pink members in Detroit were going to embrace?
Someone the Dems wouldn’t find polarizing?

MayBee on September 4, 2008 at 9:39 PM

“In a high turnout Presidential year, I am not worried about turning out the base.”

What election has she been watching to think McCain would have no worries about high turnout from the base?

abw on September 4, 2008 at 9:39 PM

“With all her charm, she is still a pick aimed squarely at the Republican base. In a high turnout Presidential year, I am not worried about turning out the base. I’m worried about everybody else we need to win and I fear that among those voters, Sarah Palin will be a dud.”

Murphy doesn’t understand the major benefit to all the down-ticket races now that the base has been securely hitched up. Those other races had to distance themselves, to varying extent, from McCain because of the animus that was still around (myself contributing), among the base. Now, all of the races can run on a few main, unifying ideas. This was evident in the lineup of speakers last night. The teamwork was quite astounding, I thought.

Murphy doesn’t understand how important it was to get the base aboard, and happy, and Governor Palin did that, and then some. I don’t think any other pick, that would have satisfied the base, would have had as much of a possibly wider appeal, nor such a stunning effect - which cannot be overlooked. McCain stunned EVERYONE!! It was masterful. He made the Dems look like total morons. They’re still reeling from it. I think some of the smarter folks on the left are scared of some other McCain move coming out of left field and destroying them.

Anne Kilkenny is a Democrat and a quick Google search show’s she didn’t surface until 31 August 2008. Where was all her concern when Palin was running for Lt. Governor and Governor of the state Kilkenny lived in?

Hatchet job, and not a very convincing one either.

Thanks AP. That e-mail from Anne appears to be the best way to attack Palin so far. Everything else has been ridiculous, and in fact will help McCain.

Sarah is tough as nails, and appears to like loyalty in her staff. If she toes the McCain line, she’ll do great.

However, the MSM will try to show she is Nixonian, not like Reagan. They will eventually move to attacking her as being ruthless.

Now, that might fly, but personally I want some of that to take on a Dem Congress and not be afraid to veto the shit they are gonna get from Pelosi and Reid to sign.

And if ruthlessness is all they can get on her, there are mountains on Obama illustrating his lack of ANY balls to be ruthless when he has to be.

Putin will not fear Obama. He probably would fear Sarah.

Sapwolf on September 4, 2008 at 10:22 PM

Slublog, that was Mark McKinnon who left because he liked Obama.

I am not surprised. The hispanics I have encountered are not as pro-Obama as you would think. The leftie college types yes. The average working class ones, not so much.

That’s been my experience too. In TX, everyone is Mexican. I was at a friend’s birthday party with a bunch of friends and family. Discussion turned briefly to politics and, me being the business guy, everyone asked my opinion.

10 minutes later, it was a group of devout Republicans.

The problem is that this group is generally written off in campaigns or not communicated with well. Latios are BIG on family values, most are pro-life and almost all are hard workers who believe in earning a better life for their families. The problem is that they have been sold a bill of good by the Democrats and think that they will get more financial benefits on that side. As soon as someone explains how that costs jobs, they flip.

Okay. It took maybe three minutes to find out which particular axe Anne Kilkenny - the email writer that Ben Smith posted and that the DKK are currently having spasms over - had to grind with Palin.

Kilkenny’s ticked because the governor/legislature didn’t allocate more money to a custodial wages labor dispute (or crisis) that was occurring in a Wasilla school district.

From the Anchorage Daily News, Mar 3 2006

Mat-Su School Board votes to privatize custodial jobs
Move will save $1.6 million, but some staff will see large pay cuts.

“In all, the board heard more than three hours of public testimony against outsourcing. Many urged the School Board to lobby the borough Assembly and the state for more money instead.

“‘With a $1.2 billion surplus in their budget, (the state) should be able to do more for us,’ said Wasilla resident Anne Kilkenny.”

The woman has issues with Gov. Palin. And probably the AK Republican Party. And they probably go way back. Just based on the implications of this little snippit, her assertions are suspect. Her motivations (she’s also a Democrat) are VERY suspect.

Like someone else said: it can get really, really vicious in small towns, especially when it comes to politics. It ain’t always white doves, butterflies, and rainbows in the hustings.

You honestly believe that Palin will make no difference in whether the base turns out or not?

The jump in donations says otherwise.

Just listen to the excitement around here.

The best people could do to defend McCain before was pointing out how much worse Obama would be. That’s not the kind of argument that gets people out to the polls in droves.

MarkTheGreat on September 5, 2008 at 7:29 AM

Note to Mike:

You’re worried about everyone else? That’s what McCain is for, or did you forget about that?

I’m tired of these idiots trashing us conservatives like we’re so out of touch with the rest of America. We make up the majority and if you galvanize us, YOU WILL WIN. Reagan showed that and so did Bush.

YellowDawg on September 5, 2008 at 9:52 AM

Did anybody track back the women from the “Anti-Palin” email? From what I could see with 5 minutes of investigation the Politico CONFIRMS their info because the Anchorage Daily News also published the email. That’s confirmation of it’s veracity?

Also the author of that email is identified as a active Democrat with a BA in social science form BERKELY. I’m not calling the woman a liar, just saying the source may be a bit less than unbiased.

Murphy said in public what he thought, was then recorded saying something perfectly consistent with that, and now has stood by his original call.

He’s wrong, but he’s been honest about what he thinks.

Noonan, on the other hand, seems to tell people what they want to hear.
