Republican convention, night four: Some guy to speak, denying us a double dip of Palinmania; Update: Or will he?

The line-up’s noticeably weaker than last night’s, consisting mainly of the host governor plus McCain’s inner circle/cronies: Mel Martinez and Pawlenty in the eight o’clock hour, Grahamnesty and Ridge at nine, then Maverick at 10. Totally disinterested after last night’s blowout? Don’t be. Remember, something like 70 percent of the public says the VP choice is irrelevant. If there are votes to be swung, tonight’s speech may well do more to swing them than Palin’s did.
If you missed Ed’s post about the contrast with Obama’s speech that they’re trying to draw through the staging, here it is. “There will be no negativity,” says Mark Salter, apparently not taking Limbaugh’s advice to have McCain come out and say, “I’m looking forward to working with Democrats in November — those that are left, anyway.” (Follow the link for video of that during his appearance on Neil Cavuto today.) Instead, they’re going to emphasize … change. Exit quotation from Spengler’s cynical optimism about McCain’s chances:
Obama will spend the rest of his life wondering why he rejected the obvious road to victory, that is, choosing Hillary Clinton as his vice presidential nominee. However reluctantly, Clinton would have had to accept. McCain’s choice of vice presidential candidate made obvious after the fact what the party professionals felt in their fingertips at the stadium extravaganza yesterday: rejecting Clinton in favor of the colorless, unpopular, tangle-tongued Washington perennial Joe Biden was a statement of weakness. McCain’s selection was a statement of strength. America’s voters will forgive many things in a politician, including sexual misconduct, but they will not forgive weakness.
That is why McCain will win in November, and by a landslide, barring some unforeseen event. Obama is the most talented and persuasive politician of his generation, the intellectual superior of all his competitors, but a fatally insecure personality. American voters are not intellectual, but they are shrewd, like animals. They can smell insecurity, and the convention stank of it. Obama’s prospective defeat is entirely of its own making.
Update (Ed): We may indeed get a second dose of Palinmania, although indirectly. Word is that the GOP will play the bio video that got scratched last night when Rudy Giuliani’s speech ran too long.

I know, right?!?! I totally want more Sarah! I would listen to the same speech again, or her just sitting there yakking about her kids’ sporting events.

Y’know, if he had as nice a pair of legs as Sarah, I’d be inclined to tune in, but……
CurtZHP on September 4, 2008 at 7:37 PM
That headline is genius first of all.
And how can this lineup be weak? With the woulda-coulda-shoulda Pawlenty et al speaking, even if they bomb Peggy and Charles K will be saying how brilliant their speeches were. So we’re set.
I’m curious what the audience will be, and I expect John to give a good speech but I hope it’s serious. NatSec, energy, etc.
Spirit of 1776 on September 4, 2008 at 7:38 PM
Yeah; But unfortunately in the opposite direction.
McCain’s best chance of winning would be to shut up and let S.P. do all the talking from here out.

Good luck Maverick! Good Hunting.

Let all of our Palin-ites bring the energy for the next President, John McCain… and wait patiently for the next uprising of the Palinmania!

Am I the only one who thinks that Obama timed his “yes” to O’Reilly’s show just about at the right time to steal an hour of O’Reilly sitting in front of the convention hall?
Gotta’ get a little of that spotlight off the surging party and back on Barry, and whatever version of his platform he’ll be going with tonight.
From the previews I’ve seen, contradictions are imminent and numerous.

I urge everybody to watch and to write in to MSNBC about how much they love JohnnyMAC! Anything to make OLBY more constipated than he is.
Now his attack points will be that JM doesn’t give as good a speech as Sarah. And, of course that JM doesn’t write his own speeches either.
Good luck tonight President McCain.

If that is the case, he is more of a goof than I already think he is. He may want the spotlight, but that is an incredible risk going on with Bill O. If he comes off looking bad – which is precisely what I think will happen – just judging how pissy he looked immediately after with the reporters – it’s going to be another downhill slide.

I think she will be in the spot light more then people know. Not because of some stupid McCain is going to die rumor. But McCain will ask her to help with some items.

nauseating already the back forth over our original pundit..
What will be interesting to me is to see pawlenty in action because I thought he would be a suckster pick and have not really seen him in a bigger speech like this. Thanks for the heads up.
saus on September 4, 2008 at 7:58 PM
Somehow I can’t get too enthused over the crowd (including Martinez, Graham, and McCain) who insisted I was a narrow minded racist for not shutting up and supporting the plot to give no-questions asked amnesty to millions. These bastards took an oath to uphold the Constitution and they decided to betray that trust in an effort to get along with Democrats like Teddy Kennedy. That’s nothing to celebrate even if this is supposed to be cranky old bastards big night. They should have ended after last night when the main speaker had a personality, ethics, and vision instead of tonight’s “let’s get this thing over” line up.

RushBaby on September 4, 2008 at 8:12 PM
When, Oh Lord, when are they going to start calling her SARAH’CUDA?
ManlyRash on September 4, 2008 at 8:13 PM
Of course they are. It’s a “change” election. It’s how BO and JM got nominated. It’s why JM picked SP. It’s been the overarching theme of the convention.
And the earlier story about talking about the economy? Yep, he will likely do that — because it’s the top issue in the polls. And he’ll talk energy, because it straddles the economy and nat’l security. And he’ll talk a bit about nat’l security/foreign policy, probably.
Try not to set expectations for these events that are clearly not going to be met. It’s like complaining that Hamlet wasn’t funny. Try looking at McCain’s strategy, and judging how well he executes on it.

Pfft. If Barry wants to cook his ticket to somewhere between “well-done” and “crematorium”, maybe.
A ticket with a black guy and woman on it would just be way too far out there for any states but California and Vermont.

Remember McCain gave some real stemwinders in ‘00 and ‘04. His oratory may not soar but it does hit hard and he is a good communicator. Reagan’s oratory was not soaring either but down to earth and it reached the people.
goat on September 4, 2008 at 8:23 PM
Really? Is that why Palin’s viewer numbers virtually tied those of Obama’s (the TOP of the other ticket, and The One), even though her speech aired on 6 networks to Barry’s 10? Normally you’re right, but this is nothing if not a different election than all of those previous. Granted, McCain may be more style over substance, I’m just saying, the “VP is irrelevant” may not be quite as true after what we just saw with Palin. Obviously Biden means nothing for Obama’s side though.

After watching O’Reilly just now, Obama’s hasty press conference today makes complete sense. Only one segment into the interview so far, but O’Reilly was forceful…and Obama was being pushed around – and he knew it.
I really believe that Obama thinks he failed miserably in this interview, and decided to call a press conference to save face. Hey, it’s kinda like having a bad day at work so you come home and kick the dog. Just my 2 cents.
And I still think that bump on his face is growing.

LMAO. BarryO is an emotionally confused, unaccomplished, narcissistic, humorless thug in a suit. He can’t think on his feet, can’t ever admit a mistake, or conjure an original thought. And he can’t stop the Saracuda. Right now he’s in a Class 5 meltdown. Ponder for a moment what being bitch slapped by a White woman does to his street cred.
If he had any intellectual capital he wouldn’t need to disguise his true character, have a record of serial “present” voting, or be obliged to pander to the Moonbats.

Jonah Goldberg (one of the few at NRO who has been pretty even-handed in the Sarah Palin admiration/criticism) is not impressed one bit:
Jonah needs to realize that most people (at least with the conservative base) are watching the Convention with the equivalent of “beer goggles”. Just like people who are drunk and have “beer goggles” cannot see straight and can’t tell when they are doing something dumb or hanging out with ‘ugly’ people, those with “Palin goggles” probably don’t even notice anything bad about this convention. They are drunk on Sarah and the goggles prohibit them from seeing anything bad.
Michael in MI on September 4, 2008 at 9:04 PM
I don’t know who’s bright idea it was to put Joe Gibbs out there (before Graham.) All he did was talk about how God was his coach in life, and if the RNC didn’t know, Gibb’s NASCAR racing team just got caught cheating on their car’s pre-race dyno test.
