[...] Palin delivers a knockout - Perhaps the media and Democrats would have been better advised to set expectations high for Sarah Palin’s acceptance speech tonight at the Republican convention. After ridiculing her as a small-town yokel for the better part of three days, Palin would have looked good if she managed to avoid drooling during her speech. Not only did she defend her small-town upbringing, she attacked Barack Obama on almost every possible front.. For instance, she sought to underscore Obama’s hypocrisy in talking about his love for working-class families while belittling them behind their backs..: I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a “community organizer,” except that you have actual responsibilities. I might add that in small towns, we don’t quite know what to make of a candidate who lavishes praise on working people when they are listening, and then talks about how bitterly they cling to their religion and guns when those people aren’t listening. [...]

That was an excellent piece, Dr Z, and worth repeating elsewhere, for the reason I mentioned above—an well-written satire like yours gets buried in the flood.

Mary in LA on September 4, 2008 at 5:01 PM
....Or are they Obamafans who saw the speech and are now terrified that The Big O won’t be coasting to victory, after all?

I rather imagine it is that one, if the story has ANY basis in fact.

Probably just all a lie or at least a gross exaggeration from the Obama camp.

Hey, fellow HotHeads, this headline on Drudge is harshing my Palin Buzz:

PALIN RAISES MONEY -- FOR OBAMA! **Exclusive** Obama scores $8 million since Palin's speech from over 130,000 donors - on pace to hit $10 million by the time John McCain hits stage, campaign says... Developing...

What do you make of that? $8M/130K = average of $61.54 per donor, although there are probably some big-money donors in there balancing out the $5s and $10s from the college students' allowances.

Are these people who were on the fence, saw Our Sarah's speech, and said, "She's not offering me anything, I'll go with Obama"? Or are they Obamafans who saw the speech and are now terrified that The Big O won't be coasting to victory, after all? (That would be my preferred scenario, but I can see the other one, too.)

Cheer me up here, quick, before I go curl up in the cellar next to our beloved blog proprietor!

(Speaking of whom: AllahP, where's your tip jar? I owe you and Ed big time for all the hard work you've been doing.)

Best of Wednesday night at the convention

1. Sarah Palin, superstar
2. The Palin family and Cindy McCain. Little Piper making sure her little brother looked good for the cameras.
3. John McCain coming out on stage with the Palins, and then giving the thumbs up to Tom Moe, and nobody in the media noticing
3. The look on the faces of liberals
4. Rudy Giuliani's speech of a lifetime
5. Mike Huckabee and a story about desks
6. Mitt Romney serves up the red meat
7. Michael Steele - Drill, baby, drill!
8. Linda Lingle - dignified testimony
9. Going on offense, knocking the opponent off balance
10. We're going to win this thing!

There was no teleprompter malfunction. Get over yourselves.

Dave Rywall on September 4, 2008 at 1:59 PM

Yes, there was. It did not seem lengthy, but it malfunctioned. You could hear Sarah speaking low--reiterating where she was in the speech so the techs could get it right...and I thought I saw a slight change in her demeanor--albeit brief--as she masterfully dealt with the issue.

Did she "wing" her whole speech? No. But she handled the issue with teleprompter smoothly.

It's ok to admit it Dave Rywall, it's also ok to recognize the success and abilities of others. In fact, doing so marks a man as a success himself. Refusal to do so--reveals an unaccomplished and insecure man.

r2b, did you bother to read the entire article.

It encompasses banking, autos, housing, retail and construction. It’s a continuing cycle and is being exacerbated by our hand dug slit trench toilet; that is Iraq.

If you can’t see the ditch, I’ll have to admit I’m glad you aren’t driving, no offense intended.

J_Gocht on September 4, 2008 at 11:48 AM

If no offense was meant, then why state it.
Do you understand economic cycles? How could the GNP be strong, unemployment strong if "everything" is such bad condition.
We will take two items, to keep it simple.
Do you think the housing bust was because everyone (individually) created a pyramid scheme with housing. Flipping and turning over houses during a shortage and driving the prices up. Now that we have an excess of housing, don't you think prices would drop. Isn't that the economic model, oversupply creates what? People used their homes as an investment, buying on margin and hoping the prices will rise. Well, they made a mistake and over invested. It happens everyday in the stock market, people buy the wrong stock at the wrong price. That's what you get when you speculate. Get it???
Oil, all the foolish people who said speculators were not driving up the prices have egg on their face now. As soon as talk about drilling began in earnest, the prices began to drop. As I stated months ago, if congress passed a bill to begin drilling tomorrow, and fast tracking refineries the price would drop to $40-50 a barrel, without ever having to drill.
Oil has nothing to do with the war. The war was not handled well (few are), but you are the mindset that we would be better off with Hussein still in power, well you never said that, but that is the alternative. Or you would like Iran to have taken over Iraq. Tell me, how would the oil supply we receive from the middle east be sitting with Iran and Iraq at war, or consolidating and at war again with Kuwait. Oh, you don't want us to defend Kuwait, so that is more oil lost...
Iraq is that shining object that detracts so many people.
The problems aren't with the war, our domestic problems are with greed of people making bad investments in homes. Poor budget control by congress, the democrats, and poor use of the veto by Bush.
So we weather this cycle, where the GNP is strong and unemployment low.
Or we read some article saying that it is an economic doomsday...the sky is falling, the sky is falling...

The problems aren’t with the war, our domestic problems are with greed of people making bad investments in homes. Poor budget control by congress, the democrats, and poor use of the veto by Bush.
So we weather this cycle, where the GNP is strong and unemployment low.
Or we read some article saying that it is an economic doomsday…the sky is falling, the sky is falling…

Umm, I know this is petty, but that is getting annoying. Your posts--I like, your tag? Too much is never a good thing.

Actually, I thought about that. I wouldn't really mind a personal visit from their ilk... We could get to know each other, up close and personal, if you get my drift.

I'd hate to have to X-ray all my mail, though. That would be the real hassle

If I post my name and address will that make my opinions and appreciation of a sharp wit any more valid, Drywall?

Sadly, no... you fall into the double standard block, as a conservative your opinion is worth nothing. Such is our lot in life, I'm afraid... c'est la vie.

Doctor Zero you spent hours on that. Did you read it to your cat(s) before pressing submit?

Come on, Dave, instead of wasting time with your Auto-Snark random comment generator, why not toss your hat into the ring and do a little creative writing? Write up a funny memo from Sean Hannity telling Fox News how to cover Joe Biden, or something. We've got a great bunch of readers on this blog - they'd really appreciate your effort. It'll be just like writing a Kos diary, except you don't have to pretend it isn't fiction, and no major networks will use it as the lede in a news story. Give it a shot! You are the troll we've been waiting for!

Palin gave an awesome speech. She deserves a lot of credit, as does her class act speech writer Matthew Scully!

As a right-leaning independent, it’s so nice to see that there are some Republicans that care about animal welfare. Most Repubs are fond of calling animal-welfare types loonies.

I wonder if it felt strange at all to Palin, a hunter, having an animal-welfare-anti-hunting advocate writing her BIG speech?
